Grinder Owners Unveil New Seafood Restaurant For Griffintown | Eater Montreal

"Opened March 1, this new seafood destination takes over the Notre‑Dame West space that formerly housed chef Shinji Nagai’s Le Shinji until it closed in 2016. Owners Jean‑François Corriveau and Léa D’Amboise have tapped chef S’Arto Chartier Otis (formerly of locavore Griffintown restaurant Hvor) to head the kitchen, and the opening menu has a sharp, international feel with fruity flavours drawn from Japan, East Asia and Central America: hirame (Japanese halibut) with yuzu and persimmon, and lobster with XO sauce, mango, bok choy and puffed rice. The menu generally eschews heavier, saucier dishes in favour of bright flavours and is neatly delineated into sections for shellfish, cold and hot appetizers, mains (including shared dishes), salads, sides and a handful of meat options for those not feeling nautical (including jerk Guinea hen and za’atar lamb). It’s rounded out with a fresh set of creative cocktails, while beer and wine programs have not yet been detailed. Makro is open at 1726 Notre‑Dame West from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m. Monday–Wednesday and until midnight Thursday–Saturday, closed Sunday." - Tim Forster

Rustic atmosphere with lots of energy. The service was great, and food was on point. We had a set family style menu as it was a large birthday party group. We had amazing starters from the fresh oysters to the burrata with that delicious bread and green goddess sauce to the sashimi and carpaccio that melted in your mouth, yum! Our main was even more mouth watering. A surf and turf menu made in your dreams. Lobster, jumbo tiger shrimps, scallops, not to mention the tamohawk steak, fries and sauted mushrooms. Served with numerous different sauces. A great experience! It's pricey but worth it.

By far, one of the best restaurants we've been to in Montreal. The food, the service and ambiance was on point! They waitress and bar tender gave us an excellent service and we came out of there as very happy customers. Big thank you to Leola for her good vybes and making us extra confortable. Top recommandation!!

We wanted to go to the Grinder restaurant but it was full and they suggested we could go to Markro instead. It’s own by Grinder and it has almost the same menu, but with more sea food. It was really good! It’s also easier to talk than the Grinder thanks to the lower volume of the music. I recommend!

Celebrated my sister’s birthday with the fam. at Makro by Grinder and we had an amazing dinner! From the time we sat down we were taken care of. The food was absolutely fantastic and drinks were delicious! At the end of the evening the chef even came out to say hello and show love. Definitely will be coming back. The Orecchiette Bolognaise was incredible, the beef short ribs was melt in your mouth, the rib eye was perfectly cooked & packed with flavour. Definitely a must try the Grinder chain!!! Tell em’ Jay sent ya!

Very good food - try the tartare, with the sweet potato fries, it is out of this world! The service was great and very attentive. The cocktails are good, the rice cakes and the Porterhouse too. It was just extremely hot in there on a summer evening - not sure if it was an AC problem

The seafood platter was worth the price each kind included was great. Personally prefer giant shrimp which had stronger flavour than grilled octopus. Yuca frit was magically tasty since I didn’t like it for the first bite. However I ended up eating them all.😆

Not a fan of leaving bad reviews, but when you don’t get the value you pay for, it’s gotta be cautioned for anyone else considering this spot. We were a table of 8 with a total bill around 1500$. I will start with the positives. Nice ambiance to the restaurant, valet service satisfies the parking solution, grilled octopus was great. The negatives: Service is way too slow for a restaurant asking customers to pay these prices. Multiple times, servers would be seen just hanging around and talking huddled up to each other and we would have to make a sign to come see our table. Definitely not the service we were expecting. From what we ordered, we ordered oysters which were standard, but along with the grilled octopus we ordered their so called “signature” sea bass which was overpriced and overrated for what it was. In the end, it seemed pretty basic. Just a sea bass fish cut open with a couple different sauces on it and to the side. Nothing special about it. The servers hype you up with it but it’s not worth it. Just a heads up, don’t fall for the same trap! Back to the service, it would be appreciated if the servers are fully bilingual. Even though I am trilingual, If I choose to speak in English and was being responded in French, it does not reflect well on the service potential. I could understand if it was McDonald’s but at this price tag, it would be great to choose to communicate in the customer’s preferred language between English and French. That effort was absent. Valet service could be quicker both upon arrival and upon leaving. Waiting 15 mins for your car when there are at least 2 valets is a bit too much to wait. I would gladly pay these prices at a restaurant providing price reflecting dishes and high end service. It’s a little sad cause this place has potential to be better. But my bottom line: I am one and done with this one.
