All the New Restaurant Openings in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Opened on Hamline Avenue in Roseville on July 26, Makwa is an Ojibwe-owned coffee shop where owner Jamie Becker-Finn incorporates Ojibwe culture throughout the space—the name means “black bear” in Ojibwe and the Ziigwan cold brew is sweetened with maple syrup—and she’s selling bags of hand-harvested wild rice from the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. The shop reuses tables and chairs rescued from St. Paul’s Black Dog Cafe and includes a cozy Hogwarts-themed fireplace nook for sipping coffee in chilly months." - Justine Jones

I got an Iced Vanilla Mocha and a Salted Carmel Apple PopTart, both were delicious, there is a bookshelf of books and a small selection of board games you can use while here, really cozy and cute. Love the seating choices and plenty of outlets for studying or working online. I really enjoy the in wall fireplace they have, i have rynauds syndrome and the warmpth of the fireplace was appreciated while i was working on my laptop. The price was reasonable but my only complaint is for iced drinks you only have one size to choose from 16oz, i feel as though i paid the typucal price of a 24oz drink and got a 16 oz, but that is really the only thing. I will definitely be coming here to study or do art again soon.

When I was unemployed I came here once or twice a week. Now I don't have as much time to visit but I still really enjoy it when I do. Great environment and staff and good drinks. Perfect place to write and hang out.

Diana M.

Google
Amazing Barista at the front recommended the blueberry muffin latte! Thank you! It was delicious 😋 Really cute coffee shop! And busy! Surprisingly it was not loud with all seats inside being taken and gave a more calming vibe 😌

Google
I work remotely from home; I stop in once a week to get fresh air and different scenery. I spend 2-3 hours working at Makwa when I don’t have meetings in the morning or afternoon while getting my laundry done next door (check out Roseville Laundry to do your bedding all at once! lol). Makwa is quiet, everyone is respectful and welcoming, staff is so nice. The Honey Bear is delicious!! So is their banana bread.

I love love love Makwa coffee! The atmosphere, the energy, the people... The drinks! This has been on our date list for a while now, and we finally made it in last weekend. What a treat! The staff are wonderful and the drinks were Delicious 😋😋😋. I hope to visit again soon!

Google
Wonderful coffee spot. What really struck me was how friendly the staff are! The latte I had was perfectly balanced, and I’d like to try some drink specials next time! They have fruit & grains pop tarts too, which are so delicious. They have board games too. Great vibes and perfect place to relax, study, or catch up with some friends! Definitely recommend if you’re in the area.

Google
Adorable local coffee shop, perfect for meeting with friends, passing by on your way to work, or sitting down to get schoolwork done. Their coffee was fantastic, loved that they offered lots of books and games for visitors, and the service was excellent. My only complaint is that there was very little food options available. On the day I went, it was either banana bread or pizza, and I usually like to see a bit more variety. Regardless, will be going again for the coffee and ambiance!

Google
Sweet coffee shop in Roseville. So friendly. Met a friend and worked remotely. Everything was perfect. Highly recommend coming here. There was a couple playing dominoes and ordered pizza. Loved seeing this. Will be be back and I high recommend.

Yelp
How anyone can give Makwa anything but five stars is mind boggling. A Native and queer owned and friendly space in the burbs of the cities. Always clean. Ziigwan is my favorite and go to drink. The other customers always smile and say hi. Great place to go in and just relax or to find a few new friends.

Yelp
I'm glad I found this place! It's really lovely. Tucked into a modest suburban strip mall, it has all the warmth and coziness you could possibly expect from a little independent coffee shop. The latte I got was something-something-bon-bon, sorry I don't remember what it was called but I loved it. Quite sweet, which I like, but not so much as to hide the coffee. I also got one of those "Gourmet Pop Tart" things I've seen at some cafes lately; I got the last one of the day and it was still plenty fresh and tasty. The service is extremely professional & knowlegable and the dining area is like a library, tons of books and magazines to peruse. This is a beautiful coffee shop and I think you should go hang out there.

Yelp
Their ube amaretto latte is everything! Hot or iced, it's absolutely divine. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Great tasting unique coffees served in a cozy and warm environment. It feels sort of like someone's den with all the books inside. Our server was super friendly and nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Today the coffee tasted awful- burnt. I let the staff know but they didn't really acknowledge it. I paid for a refill and tried the light roast this time- it wasn't much better- I couldn't finish either cup. I think having coffee sit in the carafes makes it less fresh. I normally like this coffee shop- they have a cute ambience with books and games. Update: the manager reached out and made things right! Wonderful and kind

Pete W.

Yelp
not very wheelchair or stroller friendly at all the entrance is a disaster and the inside is cramped. also my coffee tastes like straight milk. didn't offer straws to mix all the stuff in the bottom
google avatar

Noah C.

Yelp
Love this little coffee shop! It's tucked away in a little suburban strip mall and has a simple, spacious interior that's great for working or just hanging out. I was very impressed by the Gimiwan Latte which has amaretto and ube but tastes like the silky-smoothest vanilla latte ever. Can't wait to try out the rest of their menu! Food options are limited, some snacks and a few baked goods.

Yelp
Love that they have lots of seating indoor and outdoor, wifi, a big parking lot, and lots of drink options. I stopped by to do some work and it was pretty quiet but a lot of people stopped by which means they have great drinks and food! I got their Aurora Chill drink and it was refreshing! They also had lots of book for you to read and games for you to play with friends. I would definitely come back with friends for a chill hangout.

Yelp
Great coffee shop located in Roseville. I loved that the decor was all upcycled materials. The baristas were friendly and knowledgeable. I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but they sent me in the right direction. I ended up getting a latte that they recommended and it was delicious. I will be returning.
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
Only been once. I dig the decor and vibe, but my mint bonbon latte was not that great. Basically just bottled syrup, which is unsurprising of small indie shop of this size. I recommend giving this place a try, but the drinks can probably vary in quality. Edit: made it back the other day, and enjoyed the Ziigwan Sugar Maple which I enjoyed alot more, though you should definitely be prepared for oat milk

Yelp
Makwa's the kind of shop that you might find in a big city or near a college campus, but it's in a strip mall in Roseville. Ample parking, excellent coffee and tea drinks, and the laid back welcoming vibe I love in a coffee shop. It was later in day when I visited, so I ordered a decaf coffee, which was surprisingly tasty. I don't often order decaf at coffee shops because it's usually bad, but not the case here. Excellent choices for tea as well, and I finished with an herbal. The only downside of this shop for me is it's too far to make it regularly, but when on this side of town I'll be back.

Kathryn J.

Yelp
Great specialty drinks and cool ambiance. Good for to go or to sit. Borealis (tea and lemonade) and the rose/strawberry drinks were fabulous!

Yelp
I love this neighborhood place. A few tables outside and many more inside but still cozy with board games and a fireplace. Locally made pastries and of course coffee available at a reasonable shop price. Counter service was friendly and helpful. But best of all lots of free parking, and quiet.
google avatar

Yelp
Came back today, another Friday afternoon and it was pretty empty. Lots of space and very friendly staff. I had the ube drink which I have no clue what the name is, but it was very delicious. Would definitely recommend trying it iced!

Olivia Y.

Yelp
Cozy, super nice baristas, great workspace, and my drink was super yummy! Only one bathroom, which is fine since it's not a super large cafe.
google avatar

Nick N.

Yelp
Cute little shop that's nice and close to my office. The inside was much nicer than I expected. I liked the variety of tables. I got an Americano and was happy with it. Service was prompt.

Yelp
A cozy coffee shop in the small Hamline Shopping Center. There is plenty of parking in the oversized lot. My weakness is large windows and they deliver with clear views and plenty of natural light to work or just glaze in your hazy reverie. There is a fireplace, in rememberence of the original Caribou shops before they went 'Chicago'. Service was quick, there was no line, but at least there were smiles from behind the counter.

Yelp
Very cozy and cute coffee shop. I really appreciate how there was a huge parking lot shared with other businesses around the area. I ordered an iced caramel macchiato with oat milk which was smooth and overall okay- I would have preferred it sweeter. Overall, I think they have a good amount of flavor options to make different coffee drinks including non dairy milk alternatives which I like. Oh one thing to note- their iced drinks only comes in the bigger size, 16 oz. I also got a berry pop tart which looked better than it tasted as it was kinda dry- I would skip it. Their bakery/snack options are pretty limited but that's fine. Also seems like they close around 4pm or 5pm most days which is pretty early for me as I'm someone who likes to hang out at coffee shops but I also get it because it's kind of in a seclude spot and probably works better for their needs. I would come back and overall would rate it a 3.5/5.

Yelp
Cute, cozy coffee shop! Had a delicious pistachio latte, best latte I have had in a while. The barista was very kind. Def want to be back to try some of their specialty drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
Coffee date with friends took me out to Roseville. The inside was very cute, clean and comfy. If you are hungry for a real breakfast food this may not be the best choice, but they do have pre-rapped pastries and what looked like a rotating homemade treat of the day. The day I went was a pop tart and it was very tasty but very sweet. Great blend of lemon and fruit! I ordered the Super Bon Bon to sip on with dark chocolate mocha, pistachio and mint. It was delicious and would order it again. It's fresh crafted coffee, so expect to wait a minute for it, but the staff was super friendly and willing to answer questions.

Yelp
This is a quaint little coffee shop that has serious caffeine options. My husband is Native American (Choctaw) and was so excited to try a drink after the powwow in Shakopee. I got a basic Americano and it was quite good. I grew up with Starbucks, Dunn Brothers, Caribou Coffee, and Dunkin' Donuts...to be honest, I'm kinda tired of them lol. I just liked that it wasn't a chain, the staff was helpful and friendly, and the drinks were solid. People were happy to be there and answer questions that we all had. There is ample parking too, which is always a bonus.

Yelp
Overview: Nice local coffee shop that we explored over the weekend. It's a women native independently owned coffee shop, so if you want to support local this is the spot. They didn't have a huge menu but they had all the classics and some fun drinks they've created. Looks like they just added chai to their menu so I will have to come back to try! Service was nice and friendly. Location: Really big parking lot so easy to find parking. The outside just looks like an average strip mall but the inside feels like a small coffee shop that they added some character too. Enough seating that if you want to come in and work or study it would be comfortable. They had a fireplace in the corner that really added to the coziness. Drinks/taste: I had the Aurora Chill which was a green tea lemonade with blueberry and it was very refreshing and sweet. Would be perfect in warm days. Husband had a classic cappuccino, much better than Starbucks, and we enjoyed that each hot drink came in unique mugs. They did had some food but we did try any.

Yelp
This little coffee shop is super cute! The staff was friendly and helpful. It's located in a strip mall and super easy to find. It wasn't super busy which was great so we could easily find a table for our group. The coffee was tasty and the pastry was the perfect little treat that our group shared. It was a little sweet so I def couldn't eat the whole thing. Recommend to check this place out!

Yelp
What an inviting space! Cozy, quiet, intimate, and spacious parking. Ojibwe owned - great way to support local! The interior has a fire place and roughly 10 tables which are all great for bringing a laptop and getting work done or reading a book. Free WiFi exists! There is one larger table where a board game from the shop could be played. On the shelf, I was able to spot Catan, Caprice and Connect 4. For fall, Makwa is decorated extremely well for Halloween. They are even offering a drink called the "Basic Bee" which is a pumpkin spice and honey mash-up! The menu is standard with a smaller menu consisting of coffee drinks, tea, steamers, and lemonade. There is not a wide variety of food outside of pre-packaged pastries. Contrary, I have heard great things about the homemade pop tarts baked by another local woman owned shop called Fruit and Grain. Come and enjoy!!
google avatar

Yelp
Makwa Coffee is a hidden gem! I'm always on the hunt for local coffee shops (especially Native-owned shops) and was excited to try this business in the Roseville area. My friends and I stopped in on a rainy Sunday afternoon in search of a cozy spot to hang out, and Makwa did not disappoint. We were lucky to snag a spot by the fireplace. The space is a little small, but it only adds to the cozy feeling. It looks like they've got some outdoor seating, so I'm excited to return when the weather is nicer! I tried the dark cloud earl grey latte and loved it. My friends seemed happy with their drinks as well. There were baked goods and also the option to order a pizza! Paired with the great collection of games and activities, this spot seems like a great place to hang all day long.

Yelp
Welcome to your new favorite neighborhood coffee shop! I was highly anticipating this one opening. In a land of Starbucks and Caribous, I wanted a locally-owned option. I mean, if I'm going to fuel my caffeine addiction, I'd at least like the money to go back into the local community! Enter Makwa. Locally-owned, woman-owned, Native-owned!!! And the coffee is amazing! I got the Ziigwan Sugar Maple and it was so yummy. Well-balanced and not too sweet. The bonus? The ice cubes were cold brew! Brilliant and uncommon (it's my fav way to prepare iced coffee at home, but I can't remember getting it ever in a shop!). What really "wow"-ed me is the inside of the shop. It's BEAUTIFUL and has the best seating. I could totally see myself working from here or having a coffee meeting, and I was excited to hear about after-hours events like watch parties and rentals. So fun. Welcome to the neighborhood, Makwa! I'm excited to keep coming back.

Yelp
Great service, the Crunchy Mocha was delicious and the space had a great vibe to spend some time
google avatar

Julia L.

Yelp
Great staff, love the large table inside for working, free WiFi and parking lot. Yummy cold brew. Will be back to try more another time!

M S.

Yelp
Yummy treats and succinct beverage menu with delicious lattes. I love the casual environment however it can get tight in there! The staff were very nice and helpful. I will go back there for sure. Parking lot is spacious!
google avatar

Sarah V.

Yelp
With all the coffee shops out there, it's nice to be able to support a small business, run by a local owner, rather than a corporation. The coffee is roasted locally, the food is sourced locally, and all of it is delicious! I appreciate that the owner takes the time to share her heritage with us, be it food or handmade products. Try the Ziigwan if you like iced coffee. If you bring kids, ask for an off-menu creation. My son loved his lemonade drink!
google avatar

Yelp
I am a strong believer in supporting locally owned businesses. I personally have enjoyed the coffee that I've ordered (Lavender Latte) the two times I have visited Makwa Coffee. Both times I have visited ( a weekday morning & small business Saturday ) the energy of the staff felt off and I didn't feel welcomed. My personal wishes/ recommendations would be staff engaging with customers more than just taking orders. Allowing purchases to be made with cash or card. Instead of card only. (I work in the service industry and usually have more cash than money on my debit card) Lastly would be including more food options. As I stated in the beginning of my review.. I believe in the importance of supporting local businesses over corporations. I am also hopeful and wanting specifically this coffee shop to grow and thrive because it is indigenous owned and I believe in the importance of increasing BIPOC ownership of businesses - entrepreneurship. I will continue to visit and encourage others to check out this coffee shop despite of what I don't enjoy from the previous times I've been.
google avatar

Lizzie L.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop! Yummy coffee, beans for sale, and baked goods. Nice spot for working or reading. They also have a larger table for a bigger groups. Some games and books for kiddos available too!
google avatar

L V.

Yelp
Coffee here is DELICIOUS. I had a Ziigwan Sugar Maple latte and it was so good. Service is very friendly. The inside is clean, bright, and beautiful! So happy to have a great coffee shop in the neighborhood. The one thing that I thought that missed the mark a bit was the food selection. When I went in, the food that was available was packaged surgery cookies and bakery items that didn't look very fresh or appetizing. I was for hoping for some indigenous food options-I love that this shop is Ojibwe owned, and the whole theme of the shop seems to lean that way-so it would be really awesome to have the food tie in as well! I understand that this is a very new shop-and I'll certainly be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Great service and good selection of coffee drinks. Native American roots. Easy location to get to.

Yelp
Had a great experience getting the Maple Caramel cold brew. The service was friendly and the drink was perfect in a hot day. Will be back again.

Yelp
I was so excited last year when I heard that a Native-owned coffee shop was opening near St Paul! We made our first visit to Makwa in Dec. I was really eager to try the Ziigwan Sugar Maple drink -- and it did not disappoint!! It was quite delicious! I also bought a bag of beans and was treated to a surprise small drip coffee. I gave that to my husband and he remarked that it was very good. That's worth mentioning since he never really comments on drip coffee (good or bad). We made a return trip in Jan for Fry Bread Friday. This time I got two Ziigwan drinks -- one to enjoy while we sat in the shop, one for later in the day! The fry bread was good, but if I hadn't heard about it on FaceBook I probably wouldn't have known it was available since the only sign of it was a small post-it somewhere on the front counter. I also wish that the cashier/barista had pointed out that there was butter and other toppings for the fry bread available in a not super obvious spot that I happened upon when looking for napkins. Inside note: there's a fireplace to cozy up to if that's your thing. I also saw board games available on a shelf. Outside note: Makwa has a big parking lot (shared with the strip mall). Business note: they close at 3 or 4 every day except Thursday (open until 9) and are closed on Mondays. Makwa has hosted some craft, theme, and movie nights, so check out their FaceBook page for details on such events. I highly encourage you to support this WOC-owned local coffee shop!!! I want to return to try some of the homemade pop-tarts and other locally baked goodies someday. My only complaint is that Makwa is not very close to us so I can't go as often as I'd like!

Yelp
I love this place, the vibe & owner are down to earth folks who are salt of the earth. Great coffee and awesome cups.
google avatar

Yelp
So happy to have Makwa in Roseville! Beautiful inside, several patio tables outside, and delicious coffee! My iced lavender (they have a long list of flavors!) oat milk latte was perfect. Miigwech, Makwa - for creating a great space & such yummy coffee!
google avatar

C. B.

Yelp
I was at this shop. Poor service. Kids running the register. Adults visiting while others wait. Take your business elsewhere. Obvioulsy you are oblivious to your staff and lack of professionalism.
google avatar

Adrian C.

Yelp
Love Makwa! Native Owned n Operated, Good coffee, Good people behind the counter. HOWEVER. Minus one star for prepackaged Conchas. In a world where Panaderías exist, this does not need to be. C'mon y'all, hit up Don Panchos or Durango Bakery or something.
google avatar

Shannon C.

Yelp
Great coffee, excellence service, amazing atmosphere! Very family friendly. Highly recommend!

Brandon T.

Yelp
I visited recently with my daughter and we loved it! So cozy, great for relaxing or studying. My daughter played (and beat) me in a few rounds of Spot It - and oh yeah, the coffee's great! I bought a bag and made it at home and that was also very good. We need more local shops like this in the suburbs and I'm so glad Makwa is here.
google avatar

Courtney S.

Yelp
Fantastic Local Coffee place with a great atmosphere and a focus on giving back to the community. If you're going to spend $5 on coffee, spend it here and keep the $$'s in our community!
google avatar

Susan W.

Yelp
lovely location, high quality coffee, woman and Native American owned business. show them some love, such a great addition to the neighborhood.

Jon S.

Yelp
So refreshing to find a coffee shop that is operated at such high standards! Jamie, the owner is very involved and actually just made my delicious latte! So thankful for this gem! excellent outdoor parking too!

Priscilla L.

Yelp
Lovely quiet atmosphere. Was surprised they requested credit card and wouldn't take cash.

Scott F.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. Local, independent coffee shop and native owned. My friend and I both had the special maple oat milk cold press. There wasn't a price list anywhere that I saw. Imagine my shock when the bill was $16.11 for two cold presses. No food, nothing but the two coffees. Ok, I thought, maybe they include a gratuity in the charges. Nope, gratuity not included. $7.50 for an oat milk cold press. The coffee was good but not so good that I'm willing to spend $7.50 plus tax plus a gratuity. That's about almost $10 for a coffee. I wish them good luck, but I won't be back with those prices.

Jackie O.

Yelp
Great locally owned coffee shop! Awesome coffee and menu. The atmosphere is comfy and cozy, exactly what is needed during these cold winter months.
