"Monga Fried Chicken, a Taiwanese chain known for its crispy chicken, will open its first Houston-area location. The venue will offer chicken cutlets that are brined and batter-dipped for a thick, crunchy crust, available plain or with a spicy dry rub or seaweed. Other menu items include chicken wings, nuggets, burgers on steam buns, fries, and cole slaw. Fresh juices like coconut-orange and watermelon are also offered at some locations." - Amy McCarthy

This place is a hidden gem! The food is extremely flavorful and the prices pretty reasonable! We tried the crispy chicken, Mongolian beef, spicy fried rice, soup and noodles, there was not a single dish which disappointed! The service was a bit sloppy, but I do understand they were short staffed and they did make it up towards the end.. Our favorites are crispy chicken and fried rice, simply delectable! Definitely coming back to try more of their greens and veggies! And yeah before I forget to mention, shout out to them for including halal menu!

We have been coming to this place regularly for the last few years since their opening in Sugar Land. The food is always delicious, and they maintain the quality very well. Especially like the Tea Smoked Duck, Jiggling Pork Belly, Twice Cooked Pork, and Water Boiled Beef. We would order the Family Pack for take-out. They also recently update this location with new furniture making it even cozier than before. Strongly recommended!

We were pretty disappointed with the service we received. It was great when we first walked in— vibe was relaxing. There was no wait on a Friday night, and the female server was kind and attentive when we were initially seated at our table. It wasn’t until after our food was served.. was when the service was bad. Not once did anybody come by to check up on our group of 4. The servers would avoid eye contact and cater to the other tables while passing ours. It came to a point where we had to wave down the servers to finally get some attention after 10-15 minutes of no water and rice refills. The restaurant is already much smaller compared to the Katy location and it wasn’t extremely busy. It’s just quite fascinating how three front of house staff were able to neglect us in a room of about 30-35 people. I’ve been to the Katy location a couple of times, and I’ve never received this kind of service. And if you haven’t been to the Katy location.. they are very on top of everything. Even with a FULL HOUSE with a restaurant of much bigger capacity. And they had around the same number of front of house staff too. I’m glad that at least the food at this Mala is of good quality and is the same as Katy. But all in all, you guys really need to learn from the Katy location. I’d rather make the drive and get better service than to sit here and feel neglected.

Limited seating and halal menu is on select days (Fri-Tue). The chilli oil on dishes will clear your sinus. I could snack on the spicy chicken and beef all day. Even the leftover food that i took home tasted great the next day.

Google
Amazing Food! Had a wonderful experience! Went for my birthday dinner, and I am glad I picked this place. We ordered the following items from the Halal Menu: Kung Pao Chicken 9/10 Mala Fried Beef 8/10 Combination Noodles Chicken and Beef 8/10 Combination Fried Rice Chicken and Beef 8/10 Really liked the Plum Juice I wish they had Halal Menu on other locations as well We drove all the way from spring to try this place! Also, we recommend adding halal appetisers and a soup bowl to the menu! Really, like the overall taste is very authentic !

Google
Our family have dined here several times since they opened .1st time to order the three pepper beaten duck. It was flavorful. BUT the amount of boney duck meat served was unreasonable. Barely any meat . It was less than a bite size . I'd say maybe LESS THAN a cup of serving? $18.99?? We had more discarded duck bones. So disappointing. So overpriced for that small serving of scrapped duck meat prolly left over from the tea smoked duck . Sorry Mala Bistro That dish was a ripped off.

Google
Mala Sichuan in Sugar Land, TX, has been one of our go-to restaurants for a couple of years. We love the consistency in the flavor; the dishes are always bursting with authentic and vibrant Sichuan spices. However, we've noticed that the portion sizes seem to be getting smaller. It could be a figment of my imagination, but it's something that I've noticed. Nevertheless, we still come here a couple of times a month for to-go orders or to dine in. The service is quick and friendly, and the ambiance is cozy and welcoming. Despite the portion size concern, Mala Sichuan remains a favorite for its exceptional food quality and delicious offerings. Highly recommended for Sichuan cuisine lovers!

Always liked the food in this place. This evening I had a craving for their whole live fish, and my family already have their food prepared. So thought it was a good idea to order a pick up for myself. Ha! Placed the order at around 6:35, got the text that it would be ready at 7 to 7:05. So I dropped in at 6:55, thinking that the food might be ready, or at least coming soon. Apparently that’s when they place the order into the kitchen. I had to wait there for 25 min until 7:20 to get my food. When I got home, everyone was waiting for me, hungry. And to add salt to insult, the portion is tiny for a $15 dish and a $30 dollar dish. The fish is no big and the other dish just has a shallow layer of food in a small delivery bowl. Looks like 1/2-2/3 of portion of their dine-in dish I had experienced before.

Yelp
I can't believe I didn't know this was here the whole time! We go grocery shopping here weekly but never noticed that this restaurant is connected to the strip as one of the end caps. The menu and execution is what you'd expect from a mala restaurant. I really like their crispy spicy chicken and crispy spare ribs. I'm so glad we have a location so close to home!

Patty C.

Yelp
I've been to a couple locations of this long standing Sichuan restaurant that originated in Chinatown. They never disappoint! This Sugar Land location is a bit smaller in size, but it still offers the full experience. Most of the dishes contain a healthy amount of spice, though they can adjust the amount most of the time. Their rendition of mapo tofu is top tier! I thought their version of water boiled fish was also stellar. There's not as much chile oil and broth as most places, which I kind of prefer. Pass on the Dandan noodles and wontons. Neither were very good. Their pork with bamboo and fungus was an interesting dish on the sweeter side. The basil crispy chicken was a good non spicy option, though it was on the salty side. Service was okay. We definitely had leftovers, but that's always a good thing.

Katherine D.

Yelp
Such a nice place for a quick dinner! The service was pretty fast, but do be patient bc there was only one server when we came and there was a bit of a crowd. The server was super nice and attentive and was always prepared with suggestions. It is sat at the corner from of Jusgo and I think they remodeled or redecorated. I really like how they look. Very warm but modern look. It's quite popular w families and I think good for any type of group. My favorite here is definitely the spicy crispy chicken and the beef version has a similar flavor but feels a bit drier. The eggplant was so good but I'm also biased towards them. It's a very similar to garlic eggplant everywhere else but it is so good. The tendon was really good but do beware it has quite a bit of the sichuan! Tbh I think all the food has a strong Sichuan flavor tho lol. The food is all good and classic Chinese food, nothing surprising or different than you expect when you order.

Yelp
Mala Sichuan Bistro is a great choice for anyone who loves bold and tasty Chinese food. The Green Tea Bacon Fried Rice stands out with crispy bacon, scallions, and white onions. They stir-fry these ingredients in fragrant jasmine tea and a special blend of soy sauces. This creates a savory and slightly smoky rice dish that is both comforting and aromatic. As much food that I've tried and as many restaurants that I've been to... I will say I have never tasted any rice like this ever. It's so good without any condiments or soy sauce... My GOODNESS! And they give you an incredibly large amount. Another delicious dish is the Spicy and Crispy Chicken. This dish has tender pieces of dark meat chicken (my favorite... Not a white meat fan) that are flash-fried until crispy. Yum. The chicken is tossed in a mix of dry red chilies, Sichuan peppercorns, and fermented broad bean paste. The result is a dish that combines heat and crunch, topped with sesame seeds and cilantro. As a Nigerian ghel, the amount of spice it has makes me do a happy dance. Mala Sichuan Bistro is a vibrant dining experience, full of exciting flavors that surely satisfy. I might have to have some this week!

Yelp
Fantastic fiery. Delicious! We enjoyed the authentic sichuan dishes very much and cannot wait to have more!

Yelp
Greeted with smiles and promises of hot fresh food. My friend and I went to resturaunt 30 minutes before closing on 2/23 Sunday. I felt like I needed to ask if I would still receive freshly made to order food because we came so late. The hostess laughed snd stated, " Of course you will!" She did not disappoint! Best Sichuan food I've ever had in Houston. This place is a GEM ! Food came out fast and so hot I had to wait to eat some of it.!!! I ordered green beans with garlic, Basil crispy chicken, Pork in Garlic sauce and a traditional Sihuan dish located under " Organ" on the menu. It was fried crispy intestine with onion, jalapeños, fresh Garlic and green onions. I was scared at first because it was fried intestine.. OMG best dish EVER! I am ready to go back to this place today!!! Nice cozy atmosphere, soft music playing in the background....easy to have a conversation. Perfect place for a date. Really cute furniture. But most important to me, the customer service was top knotch. The hostess and waitress came out multiplel times to check on our table. Our glasses were never empty. And the star of the show the STEAMING HOT, FRESH and FLAVORFUL food!!!!! 10 out of 10!!! Chefs kiss!!!!!!!!

Ritu D.

Yelp
Disgusting. Found 2 insects in my food. Probably rice bugs. Shows that they don't store the rice properly or clean it. I can't believe I previously went to this restaurant. Worried about the hygiene standards. And when I pointed this out to the waitress, she didn't even give a full refund. Just 5 dollars off from what I can remember.

Angee A.

Yelp
I used to eat at Mala a lot before I started eating only halal. After I started, I was limited to their seafood dishes only. As delicious as they were, I missed the spicy crispy chicken so much. Then Mala started offering halal options on Sunday and I wanted to cry tears of joy. The food is as good as I remember, maybe better! My favorites are the aforementioned spicy, crispy chicken. Love the sichuan peppercorns. I also love the house special chow mein and lamb ribs. I've been making my way through the halal menu and the only dish I didn't love was the Mongolian beef. It's not bad, but there are better beef options. I usually order takeout online and I never have to wait. Service is friendly. Thank you Mala for making halal Sichuan food!

JOANNE M.

Yelp
The food here us so good! If you like spicy Chinese food, this place is for you. Our favorites are the dry fish pot. It's fried fish fillet with lotus root and cauliflower with numbing Shichuan peppercorns. So yummy! The shrimp version is also good. We tried their hotpot we everything in it like fish, shrimp, tofu, pork blood, intestines etc. It was big enough to share with 4 people. Soup was tasty and spicy but a bit oily, maybe because of chili oil. Still flavorful hot pot. Service is good but they can be busy during lunch and dinner. Want to try other dishes next time.

Emi A.

Yelp
Excellent food. Fresh. Great spice level. The service was friendly. Would recommend! Loved the shrimps!

Ron L.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Staff were friendly. Service was fast. Every dish was on point. Super mind numbing spice. Very well done

Yelp
I made the 25 minute drive to get the Cumin Lamb and it was great. This dish was a first for me so curiosity caused me to drive by many Asian restaurants to try it out. My mistake was to order takeout and be tortured by the aromas and anticipation of dinner during the drive home. The restaurant is in a larger shopping complex with easy to read signage outside the building. My order was ready within the time quoted and handed to me with a huge smile. Oh yeah back to the cumin Lamb, it was excellent and really glad I made the trip. I'm looking forward to my next visit to try other dishes but plan to stay and enjoy my meal onsite.

Gabrielle S.

Yelp
Food is excellent. Service is good. Ambiance is quaint. We loved most of the dishes we ordered. I highly recommend the cumin lamb, house special fried rice, red oil dumplings, & the baby bok choy & shiitake mushrooms. The only dish I would not reorder is the sichuan style salt & pepper prawns. It wasn't bad but it was a little too salty & little complexity of flavors. Other than that everything was delish. Best sichuan in the area! Definitely try this place out for yourself.

Trina T.

Yelp
Food not as good as it used to be and now they calculated 20% tip on party of two on total AFTER tax. Did tax serve us as customers? Or just making another dent in our pocket? Why tip over tax? I sure will not come back.

Isaac W.

Yelp
I took my parents here for the first time even though they've live in Sugarland for 10+ years. They loved it. Ribs were well-seasoned. Fried rice was delicious, and the Green Tea helps cut down on the oily taste typical of normal fried rice. The cold noodle was probably my mom's favorite, but I'd consider it more of an appetizer. Epic experience. Would 100% eat here again and again and again.

Jen L.

Yelp
Always solid for sichuan food though might be a bit inconsistent some times. Still I thought everything was delicious and we went with our usuals of spicy fish in chili sauce, fried chicken with peppers, green beans and beef in hot oil We also got the spicy noodles on the side as well and had a great taste to it with the Mala spicy

Van D.

Yelp
Overall a very good restaurant. Food was delicious. I didn't like the Mala cold noodle dish as much as at another restaurant but it was all good. Can't wait to come again.

Harry B.

Yelp
Always a great meal big bold flavors cooked to perfection, every time I've gone the staff has been absolutely wonderful and the food has been extremely consistent, thank you

Cindy C.

Yelp
The eggplant and lamb dish is excellent. The food is high-quality here. We will return.

XC F.

Yelp
Food and services are not good enough, and they forced to charge 20% service fee. Some food is not fresh, like eggplant...

Denisse C.

Yelp
The food here is always delicious. My favorite things to get are the veggie chow mein, Mongolian beef, and spicy and crispy chicken. Its always served fresh, quick and hot. The servings are large and perfect for family style. The place is a little small and on the weekends there can be a wait but it's worth it! The servers are always super nice and attentive.

Julie B.

Yelp
Love the food and the service was quick and easy. Establishment was clean and the waitstaff was quick and attentive. Our family loves the food and flavors, would definitely recommend if you love great food and spices. They do work with your own spice level which is nice and the menu has so much to choose from, definitely a place to try out!

Michelin X.

Yelp
I've ordered mongolian beef many times. The soups are all delicious too. The spicy eggplants are great whether you dine in or get it delivered using one of the popular apps. One of the best little restaurants in the Sugarland/MC area.

Chu L.

Yelp
We have been coming to this restaurant for years. All my family loves the dishes. They will accommodate the tastes of different needs, e.g. spicy, salty, ingredients.

Saira K.

Yelp
Went as a group of 10 and we were seated very quickly. Service was super slow, however. There seemed to be only one person serving the entire restaurant. Our orders came out in pieces, so food got cold waiting for other dishes to arrive. We ordered a variety of dishes, but the combo fried rice and spicy crispy chicken leaned on the salty side. It took forever for our water to get refilled. They can only split a bill maximum of two ways, so be prepared for that if you're in a large group. Overall, I was not as impressed with this location compared to the Katy location and I don't think I'll be back anytime soon.

Jasmine S.

Yelp
The service here is impeccable. The young man who helped us was super nice. It was my first time here and he helped me pick out the perfect dish by asking me questions based on my taste and preferences. The crepe dessert came with a sparkler for "atmosphere" as he said lol. The presentation is super nice. He even packaged our food in to go boxes for us. Everything was delicious and I enjoyed my lunch.

Robert N.

Yelp
Very unique flavors. Price is very reasonable. Best Sichuan food I've ever had! The founder was a professor specializing in spices and it shows!

Allen Z.

Yelp
One of the best sichuan restaurant out there. If you can eat spicy, highly recommend getting the boiled fish fillet. Comes with a free container of white rice. The fragant ribs are a must too. Crispy, juicy and salty. I ordered spinach just to counter balance all the meat. Spinach with garlic was simple and pleasant.

Joseph R.

Yelp
I was very impressed with this restaurant, they started us off with a big bowl of soup which was complementary, the dining room was small but cozy an very clean, the service was excellent they were very attentive an never let my ice tea run out, the food was amazing, me an my wife loved it, it is authentic Chinese an the serving was big enough for us to take home and have a second meal. I highly recommend this cozy bistro.

Christina M.

Yelp
I've dined here so often since they opened inside jusgo. I've been to other mala sichuan bistró locations and this one is super solid in comparison! The food is super fresh and tasty and it's great how you can adjust the spice level. I always love getting their spicy chicken (La Zhi Ji) and their boiled fish. 10/10 recommend. Just note that it is a smaller location and seating is limited so just be mindful of that. But otherwise come!

Ada C.

Yelp
This location has recently opened in Sugar Land for a month or so, and it surely does take extra extra EXTRA courage to open new business or a new location during the pandemic. Bravo! Yesterday we took home an Avocado Charred Pepper Salad and two entrees, Four Joy Lion Head and Cumin Lamb, for dinner. The "lion head" was authentic and really delicious; i loved it, for my love of meatballs! The Cumin Lamb was flavorful. Cumin spice just never fails, and to me, everything cumin is yummy! Some of the lamb bites were a little dry and chewy but the fatty pieces were so tender and juicy and sooooooo scrumptious!! However, the Avocado Charred Pepper Salad that sounded pretty interesting was in fact not that good. I'd rather have guacamole, LOL, but seriously, this whole avocado, chilled and sliced up, served in spicy dressing tasted a tad weird, refreshing but weird.

Candy A.

Yelp
Fantastic! ! The best Szechuan food in the Sugarland. I ordered the Mapo tofu and the beef. Will back again

Runze S.

Yelp
Seems to have smaller menu than other branches bc it's in grocery. Pickled pepper fish's flavour is probably not the most interesting among other fish dishes on the menu. Pick something else.

Aishah M.

Yelp
Mala is open in Sugar Land and I could not be happier!! I finally got the chance to order take out from here and it did not disappoint. Mala is located in the shopping strip off Highway 6 and Settlers Way. It's connected to the Jusgo super market which was pretty cool. I ordered online which was such a breeze. I placed my order around 6:45PM and I got a text by 7:00PM that my order was ready for pick up. Anyways- here is what I ordered - Spicy and Crispy chicken- 10/10. This is my favorite dish from here that always has me coming back. The chicken is perfectly coated in the sauce and isn't too soft. And they had the perfect amount of peppercorn that leaves your mouth tingling. So good! The only drawback was that it is a bit pricey at $13.99. - Hot and Sour Soup - 10/10. Probably some of the best hot and sour soup I have had. It was the perfect combo of sour and sweet. Tasted so fresh! - Crispy Mala Beef- 10/10 so good! This dish was fried shredded beef which was perfectly marinated with different veggies, and oils giving it the perfect spicy kick!! This was priced at $14.99 which was also a bit pricey but honestly worth it. I will definitely be returning :)

Jason T.

Yelp
Good spicy Chinese food, spicy cumin lamb is the best Restaurant clean, service good

Faiza Z.

Yelp
I've only tried one thing on the menu so far but it was really good - the crispy peppercorn chicken! It will definitely make your mouth tingle from the numbing spice but it's so addictive. Service was quick and perfect for a lunch break in the middle of the week.

Mathew G.

Yelp
I love the salt and pepper shrimp. .. it was very good Love their popcorn chicken too

Gabriel D.

Yelp
Beautiful interior bistro in front of Jusgo. If you like flavorful spicy food, you must try this place! I was a first timer and new to Sichuan cuisine. I went with the popular spicy and crispy chicken and cumin lamb. Both came out super fast with the complimentary steamed white rice and were perfect. Crispy and spicy chicken had a satisfying crunch, bit of sweetness, and a small, fun numbing sensation from Sichuan peppercorns. The cumin lamb was juicy, spicy and had balanced seasoning. Can't wait to try new dishes next time from their awesome menu!

Diana C.

Yelp
Great flavors though toned down in spiciness. We ordered the chicken chow mein for the kids, ordered the boiled fish fillets with chillies, a cumin lamb, and green beans (not spicy for the kiddos). All were tasty. The restaurant is very clean and bright. Would come again, though I would probably ask them to amp up the spice factor next time.

Gin Y.

Yelp
Located next to Jusgo, this Mala Sichuan Bistro location took awhile to open for business - likely due to the pandemic. I was excited anyway because I can get northern style Chinese food closer to me. I do have to agree with other yelp reviews that this location is pricier than the Bellaire location. But, I guess you pay for the convenience. My family and I ordered a bunch of items via takeout. Here's a rundown of the food we ordered: Black pepper beef (4/5): Flavorful, moist beef. The black pepper sauce was very good. Spicy crispy chicken (4/5): It was crispy as the name states. The chicken was seasoned well and moist. Twice cooked pork (4/5): Loved the thinly sliced spicy pork belly and leeks. Pickled pepper chicken (4/5): Lol. Say that three times fast. Moist chicken. Nice texture contrast with the cucumbers, and pickled peppers. Zing from the ginger and flavorful brown sauce. Cumin Beef (4/5): heavy handed on the cumin. But, I liked it. Moist beef too. Mala Bamboo shoots (3/5): this wasn't as good as the Bellaire location. The bamboo shoots weren't as delicate and the flavor was slightly more in your face than I'd liked. Tea smoked duck (2/5): the duck was aromatic, but it was just dry. It's not worth it, since this dish was kind of expensive. Green Onion Oil Shrimp (1/5): the flavor and texture of this dish were totally off. I was expecting a nice ginger and green onion flavor. But, this wasn't pleasant to eat. Overall, we enjoyed most of the food we ordered here. We will be back to try their other dishes. Last review of 2020. Bring on 2021!

Jessica G.

Yelp
We had planned to go to Mala in Chinatown on Christmas Day, but I remembered seeing this location next to Jusgo much closer to home, so we decided to give it a try. It was such a pleasant surprise-really solid, flavorful dishes. We had: -Red Oil Dumplings -Dan Dan Noodles -Spicy and Crispy Chicken -Salt and Pepper Shrimp -Combination Chow Mein The whole fam really enjoyed everything we ate-even our sometimes picky kids. My personal fav was the Dan Dan. We're definitely adding this place to our regular rotation...a bonus is that you can go shopping at Jusgo after you eat or stop for dessert at the shops outside.

Justin F.

Yelp
The food was amazing and the service was even better. In addition, the portion sizes are impressive for a very reasonable price. Will be returning soon.

Jon S.

Yelp
Mala Sichuan is incredible. The server, Justin, is so friendly and has great service- we always look forward to seeing him. Food is very authentic Szechuan - a must try if you love Chinese food and spicy and flavorful. Highly recommend the spicy crispy chicken (pictured). Portions are huge and great for sharing. This is a must try in Sugar Land.

Allison C.

Yelp
I was really excited to try the new Mala Sichuan Bistro in Sugar Land because it is right next door to Justo and 99 Ranch. My family ordered the Cumin Lamb, Dry Pot Beef, and Spicy and Crispy Chicken to-go. Even though I enjoyed all of them, with so many new Sichuan places opening up in Sugar Land and Houston, I just can't justify the price here. After a quick menu comparison, I noticed that all of their dishes are all $1-3 more for the same dishes and portion sizes. I probably won't be back, but if you don't mind paying a premium for the convenient location, their food is good enough and I recommend any of the dishes that I ordered.

Karen C.

Yelp
AMAZING! The lotus root, plum juice, and the beef brisket in golden soup were all AMAZING! The flavors of the spices, customer service, overall great restaurant!

Don C.

Yelp
My choice was ok. A bit bland. What was really the star off was service. Slow. One main came out before the appetizer. And then I got the twice cooked pork. Condiments weren't offered then we were just left on their own. :/ kinda disappointing. I think we had a much better experience at another location.

Natasha N.

Yelp
It's so awesome having a location in Sugar land! You can find them inside 99 ranch. There is a ton of parking and the food here is amazing just as it is at all of the other locations.

Jerry W.

Yelp
I'm a regular to its Bellaire location so very excited that it has come to Sugar Land. Tried my favorites: four joy lion head (meatball紅燒獅子頭), celery fish fillet 芹黃溜魚片 and tea smoked duck樟茶鴨. They taste exactly like Bellaire and great. They are not salty or greasy. I'm sure to go back often. We ordered to go and they allowed our own containers. Very accommodating. Wait time was barely 10 minutes.

Lynn Q.

Yelp
They were packed when we walked in for lunch on Sunday, so we ordered to go. Service was still friendly even though they were super busy. Everything was packaged nicely. I'm so glad we ordered extra Dan Dan noodles because I knew no one would want to share lol. My cousin loved his mapo tofu. His mouth was tingly from the spice in a pleasant way. Everything was extremely flavorful. Will certainly come back again and try more things on the menu, but always get the Dan Dan noods, of course!
