"The chef from Wu Chow set out on her own to open a dim sum spot, so we were immediately on board in the name of Shanghai soup dumplings. And though you should probably order a plate of them before you even sit down, once you do finally look up from your plate, you’ll notice that, from the colorful walls to the large mural, the place is incredibly charming. The other dishes on the menu, like the scallion pancakes with curry dip and the chicken taro egg rolls, are also worth ordering. And though you might not regularly have dumplings for brunch, you definitely should here. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary" - Adele Hazan

My favorite restaurant of all time. I want to move here so that I can eat at this place everyday. Definitely get the soup dumplings, braised pork, and dan dan noodle.

I am disappointed at the quality of food we received from this Shanghai place. Their food quality is way below par. the dumpling skin was thick and chewy, unlike what a typical soup dumplings light and thin skin. We tried both regular pork filling and crab filling. The meat tasted stale and not fresh. The dumplings were under-cooked, as we could tell from the dumpling skin’s raw-ish looking dough. so we ended up eating mostly fillings and left the last few dumplings skins untouched. We also ordered a veggie dish, which we tasted sand (possibly from under-washed?), eggplant dish where the eggplant skins tasted burnt. Dish was oily and spicy? What’s most bizarre dish, the shrimp dumplings, the dumpling skin was made of doughy skin, versus the translucent skin like their menu advertised for (or Ha gao in cantonese). I gave them a 3 star for the service, because the server returned the shrimp dumplings after he saw and agreed that this is not what’s expected. The server had seated us down on one side of the restaurant and later on directed us to move to another table so to accomplish other customers. We still tipped the business 10%, which is more than what they deserved consider only service we had received was so to be served for dishes and returned dish upon we requested. For this so called “hole in the wall” place. other than the ambiance, i cannot say for the quality of the dumplings or the dishes has any advantage competing with any other typical hole in the wall place would serve.

General Tsos chicken is burnt. Beef pan udon has no flavor and is mushy. Young chow fried rice is a hot mess frozen vegetable overload. Soup dumpling is too thick and chewy. The only decent order was the Pea Shoots. Overall we are so disappointed with our dinner order.

I started going here after finding it on a whim because we didn’t feel like going into the city for soup dumplings. After that one meal, we were hooked and my entire family, extended family and friends knew about this gem of a place and we’ve been going here since 2018. The food, service and owner Simon are all just like a warm hug every single time we eat the food and dine in there. It’s no nonsense, simple but delicious food. We will forever love Shanghai and follow Simon and his family wherever they continue to!!

Tried the crab soup dumplings, veggie steamed dumplings (see photo) and dumplings in spicy sauce. Soup dumplings are okay. Dumplings in spicy sauce is good, they are more like wanton, i like the spicy sauce. The veggies dumplings wrappers are undercooked and dry, the fillings are nothing to rave about. Not going back.

We have been eating at Shanghai since it opened. The food is fresh, authentic, light and overall very good. Simon greets us warmly each and every time we visit. I highly recommend!!

My husband and I recently tried Shanghai and love it. It's small and cozy and reminds me of a Chinese restaurant my grandparents would take me to when I was little. It's no frills and there's a self-serve section for utensils and napkins, but we're always greeted with a pot of oolong tea and thanked by name when we leave. The dishes are always flavorful and fresh. Personally, I prefer the dumplings at another spot in town, but the sesame chicken and the scallion pancakes can't be beat. There's free parking in the back, which we didn't know on our first visit.

Truly an authentic experience. As a very picky eater of Chinese food, this place may very well top my list. Fantastic service, good tea, BYOD and no MSG. All that is great, but the food is really what stands out. Every dish I've had there has been excellent. They do not weaken the flavor or spiciness of the dishes at all! The dishes with hot oil will numb your mouth and open up your taste buds. Favorite dish was that spicy hot oil noodle soup, it's basically a spicy hot pot, in noodle soup format. Best version of it that I've had in the tri state area. Even beats my favorite places in Queens. If you can handle the spiciness, definitely come here!
