The Very Best Ice Cream in New York City | Condé Nast Traveler

"I love the creamier-than-creamy texture and seasonal Indian ingredients here, where Pooja Bavishi pulls from childhood-kitchen memories to create bold flavors like guava and chili, rose and cardamom, and roti and ghee; standout orders include Rose with cinnamon roasted almonds and sweet corn saffron, and the shop also makes sorbets, nut brittles, ice cream cakes (don’t sleep on the gulab jamun cake). Since launching in 2015 with a Cobble Hill outlet, the brand has expanded (this summer adding a West Village pop-up) and now has stores beyond NYC as well." - Charlie Hobbs

A New Tapas Spot Opens in the East Village With Nothing Over $10 | Eater NY

"The Cobble Hill ice cream shop with offshoots in D.C. and Philly is running a pop-up in the West Village starting Friday, July 11, at 9 Christopher Street (at Gay Street). Described as a preview for a permanent West Village location that owner Pooja Bavishi is planning for later this year, the pop-up features flavors such as coffee-cardamon, masala chai, and rose-cinnamon." - Melissa McCart

Malai is one of the best ice cream spots I can rely on for clean, high-quality ingredients! Their seasonal flavors are always creative and delicious, for Diwali, they had Peda, Kaju Katli, Kheer, and even Puran Poli! You can truly taste the craftsmanship and thought they put into every scoop.

My favorite ice cream shop ever. Malai always has incredible flavors that will leave you shocked, delighted, and satisfied. A great clean, bright space with a few tables and seats. Check out their ice cream cakes, pints, ice cream cookies, and kulfis.

Google
Malai is serving up some of the best ice cream in the city, by a wide margin, and its West Village location is warm and welcoming. These inventive flavors sing. I went with tulsi chocolate chip and butterscotch butter pecan on my most recent visit. I left very satisfied, thanking the ice cream angels.

Got the split scoop or 2 scoop cup, $7.50. Tried the rose with cinnamon almonds and the saffron pistachio. Both were good, creamy. Interesting flavors. Overall a 8/10.

Google
This place was wonderful! I tried the Guava Chili, Pink Pineapple Peppercorn and Spiced Peanut, I gotta say these people know what they’re doing, their one scoop serving is MASSIVE, and you can split your one scoop serving between two flavors. If you’re vegan, definitely combine Guava Chili and Pineapple Peppercorn, they go deliciously together. The people serving the ice cream were super kind and lovely. Will come back 🙏❤️

As a south asian person who grew up with these flavors, I have to say they’re NOT good. Flavors are not great and taste awful

We tried all of the flavors and everything was just amazing!

Google
The offerings as always were great. While they will close for this winter of 2025 for renovations they said they should be back for Spring of 2026.

Yelp
Stopped by Malai and was seriously impressed. I had a split scoop of the guava chili and pineapple pink peppercorn, both happened to be vegan, but you'd never know. The texture was more like a sorbet, super refreshing, with a sweet start and just the right punch of spice at the end. Perfect treat on a hot day. The person behind the counter was really helpful, and the space itself is lovely, clean, thoughtfully designed, and inviting. Always love supporting a South Asian-owned spot, especially one that brings such unique flavors to the table. Can't wait to go back and try more!

Yelp
I went to their new location in West Village. They have Indian inspired ice cream flavors, which was definitely something I don't think I've had before! I got their flight of 4 ice creams and my favorites was cardamon pistachio and mango and cream.

Yelp
marvelous inventive ice cream flavors, both dairy and not. great texture too. recommended.

Yelp
Really outstanding place with the best-chosen (curated?) set of ice cream flavors I've come across. I tasted four and each was both out of the ordinary and came together well and in interesting ways. The person serving was really helpful. This place won't be around for long, so recommend trying it out to anyone who enjoys ice cream.
