Malai - Review - Chelsea - New York - The Infatuation

"Malai is an Indian-inspired ice cream shop in Carroll Gardens, and it's a very good thing that they also have an outpost in Market 57. Primarily because it means you can get a triple-scoop of their super thick ice cream, then take your cone on a walk around nearby Little Island. When it comes to picking flavors, there is no wrong answer, but try the rose and cinnamon-roasted almond at least once. It pairs perfectly with mango and cream, our other favorite." - Carina Finn

Amazing flavorful Indian inspired and themed ice cream (with no egg), with 6 rotating flavors (one vegan), ice cream bars and the rotating soft serve. Very friendly staff, they allow sampling, have ample seating around the pier. It is a sister branch to the flagship store in Brooklyn. Strongly recommend. My favorites were the pineapple pink peppercorn (vegan) which was exquisite (refreshing pineapple with a nice spice kick from the pepper), the pumpkin garam masala (great pumpkin taste with the classic Indian garam masala) and the rose soft serve (lovely rose flavor). The Tulsi (Indian basil) chocolate chip was also quite good.

Been wanting to try Malai ice cream, so glad it opened up in Manhattan inside the new Pier 57 food hall. The flavors come through in the ice cream without being overpowering. The staff also let us try so many flavors :) I especially loved the salted vanilla, the Turkish coffee, and the rose with cinnamon

Very unique flavors (also weird) available, I generally like the texture of all the ice cream here. Good for adventurous eaters!

Very interesting flavors, we tried the masala chai and rose cinnamon ice creams and they were tasty, I would come back again when I visit the city next. Must add, great service.

Visited the location in Pier 57. Service was not good - there wasn't a line when I was there and the server was occupied doing something else for at least a couple minutes and only acknowledged me after that. (If the selection wasn't so intriguing, I would have left) Had the royal cinnamon and black salt caramel DF ice cream and it was delicious. Was able to sample another flavor before placing the order (the other flavor was not as memorable). Pricing was a bit weird - $6 for a single scoop and $1.5 for each extra scoop up to 3 total.

Easily the best mango I’ve cream I’ve ever had in my life! Some of the best I’ve cream I’ve ever had in general! I’ll dream about this ice cream forever!!!

We enjoyed ice-cream sandwiches and popsicles on a very hot day at the high line park. I loved the saffron flavored. It was authentic. Other flavors enjoyed were rose and cardamon sandwiches

Disappointed. I wanted to like this place, I really did. But after coming to the physical location I left feeling this place doesn't live up to the hype. When we came, there were a few flavors to try - lycee (sorbet), Turkish coffee, sea salt peppercorn, sea salt vanilla, and milk and cookies (got this one - it wasn't great). Opted for the lycee and though it was refreshing, wish I didn't get it with a cone (which is an extra $4 btw). And after tasting it, wish I got the Turkish coffee. What surprised me most about this place is that there weren't any flavors that I would have expected (i.e., chai, something related to cream + cardamom). Maybe they'll have more flavors down the line at this location, but was pretty disappointed. Want to support a POC woman founder, so will give this another shot next time and try a different flavor!
