"Malaparte is a block from the river, and it’s a great option for when you get tired of gazing out at New Jersey like it’s an island in the Mediterranean. Stop by some sub-$20 pasta or a pizza with mozzarella, arugula, and prosciutto." - matt tervooren, neha talreja

"Have you ever found yourself wandering through the West Village thinking: “Is there a place that’s charming and casual I can just pop into for some carbs and a nice salad without a two-hour wait?” That place exists, and it’s Malaparte. This dark little spot on Washington Street with exposed brick everywhere and wood floors that might be 100 (or more) years old is good for either a date night or a meal with a handful of friends. Order some rigatoni, a pizza with prosciutto, and the simple grilled whole branzino." - bryan kim, neha talreja, will hartman, sonal shah

"We miss eating at Malaparte. Do you? Probably. So call 212-255-2122 for some takeout carbonara and a whole grilled branzino, or order delivery online. Beer and wine is also available, and currently all payments have to be made with credit and debit cards." - hannah albertine, nikko duren, bryan kim, arden shore, matt tervooren

"It’s entirely possible that whoever built Malaparte used a checklist for cute, casual Italian spots. Just look at the brick walls, the stubby wine glasses, and the charmingly distressed wood furniture. Like the room, the food here is simple yet elegant, and it's better than what you'll find at the majority of casual Italian spots in the city. Get a pizza for the table, then have some spaghetti al carbonara or a plate of chewy pasta coated entirely in bright green pesto. Malaparte isn't doing anything especially new or mind-blowing, but, after one visit, you'll wish you lived closer." - Bryan Kim

"At one point or another, you might have harbored some dream about living in the West Village. Wouldn’t it be great? Waking up in a charming little townhouse apartment on a cobblestone street, waving hello to your celebrity neighbors’ children and occasionally ending up in the background of their paparazzi photos? You’d whimsically end up buying a small dog one fall Sunday afternoon from that shop called “Le Petit Puppy.” And of course, you’d be a regular at some under the radar, charming, low-key neighborhood restaurant. Except, here’s the thing: that studio apartment’s “bathroom” is a cracked bathtub located next to the refrigerator. Your neighbor isn’t actually the smiling offspring of the star of your favorite prestige TV drama, but actually an old man who watches those NY1 call-in shows with the door open all day. That pet store actually closed, probably because drunk people buying pets that come from puppy mills is a bad idea for everyone involved. And does that lively, dimly-lit, brick-walled restaurant on a pretty corner even exist? Actually, it does. While that apartment full of natural light on Jane Street will probably have to remain a figment of your imagination, the charming neighborhood restaurant you envisioned is actually real, and it’s called Malaparte. photo credit: Noah Devereaux Brick walls, wood floors, good pastas and salads, heavy pours of red wine, a generally pleasant crowd - they’re all there at Malaparte. The food isn’t revolutionary, but it doesn’t need to be, and that’s kind of the point. If you take a date here, they’ll be impressed, but not because the restaurant is fancy or “impressive.” They’ll be impressed because you happened to know about this cute little restaurant on Bethune and Washington. If you do go, know that you’re not the only person who found this diamond in the rough - so expect a wait at peak times. You can use the time to pick up some cash, because they’re a cash-only establishment. (Of course they are.) If you’re planning to be a group of four or more, they do take reservations, but only over the phone. (Again, of course. What do you think this is, Chelsea or Flatiron?) By the way, the bathtub in your imaginary apartment is leaking. Into the old man’s apartment. Food Rundown Di Rucola E Agrumi You’ll be happy with any of the salads to start here, but if you can’t make a decision, we suggest the arugula with grapefruit and mint. photo credit: Noah Devereaux Spaghetti Al Pesto Genovese The pasta is really good here - chewy and hot, just like in Italy. Except near the Hudson River. When in doubt, go for the very fresh pesto. photo credit: Noah Devereaux Spaghetti Al Carbonara Same great spaghetti, in a sauce that will make you feel slightly worse about yourself afterwards. Order with confidence. photo credit: Noah Devereaux Pizza Di Rucola E Prosciutto Di Parma The pizzas here are essentially round flatbreads, and we like this one with arugula and prosciutto. Order one for the table. photo credit: Noah Devereaux Branzino Spinata Alla Griglia That’s a fancy way of saying a grilled piece of whole fish. Those eyes are staring at you are saying, “Good choice of restaurant.” Galetto Al Forno That’s a fancy way of saying Cornish hen, which is a fancy way of saying chicken. Another strong order." - Hillary Reinsberg

Malaparte is no frills, all substance. They serve really tasty, classic Italian dishes in a casual and cozy atmosphere. Visiting during the warmer months when the restaurant is cooled only by the open air breeze makes the experience feel that much more Italian.

Good Italian food at a reasonable price point! Everything was tasty but nothing that blew our socks off.

Malaparte is an absolute gem in NYC! The vibe is authentic, cosy and rustic, making it the perfect spot to escape on a rainy, stormy night. The pasta is phenomenal—especially the pesto rigatoni, which is hands down one of the best we've ever had. The service was lovely and attentive. If you're looking for a truly authentic Italian experience in a charming setting, Malaparte is the place to be. Can't wait to return!

Excellent Italian Food. Really strange service. We ordered many dishes to share for our party of four and enjoyed each one. Outdoor seating is very nice and quiet while indoors is more lively. The grilled squid was a group favorite and the steak was delicious as well. Lasagna and gnocchi were also worth ordering. The service, however, made our experience feel very odd. It wasn’t that it was aloof or unpleasant, but the staff did seem like they had never worked at a restaurant before - all of them, collectively. We ordered all plates to share and let them know that we’d be having dinner “family style”. Bread was dropped with no bread plates and dishes were delivered with no serving utensils. When asked for serving utensils for the four dishes, the server responded with “how many?” He also looked confused that we needed more than one steak knife between the four of us. When we entered the restaurant to use the restroom, we found the staff standing around talking, blocking the doorway with no awareness of the customer. When we had finished, plates were clumsily cleared causing a wine glass to tumble and for some reason, the server’s fingers with inside the glass! Finally, while my party was in the restroom, I was abruptly asked to leave the table because there was a party waiting. Everyone is very nice and the food is great. I would definitely recommend. Just don’t expect a refined dining experience.

Place is great. We had the beet and ricotta salad, and the calamari. The food is everything you could want from an Italian restaurant. It’s also completely authentic as much or all of the staff is Italian. Sometimes the service might be a little slow or inconsistent by American standards but again this is similar to what you would get in Italy and I feel is authentic. The wine is priced really affordably and isn’t flashy but is really good—also authentic to what you get in Italy. I haven’t found many places in New York that as closely match the dining experience you would have in Rome, Naples or Florence but this place hits the mark for sure. Also the interior is really nice.

I had a great Italian dinnig experience at Malaparte, our host gave us a very nice table altough we didnt have a reservation, service was fast and friendly. I had Halibut, grilled calamari and spaghetti with porcini mushrooms, and everything tasted delicious. Always check their special menu for new items. I noticed many people who look like they were on a date, so it's a great spot for enjoying a date night.

What a cozy spot for dinner ! They had plenty of seats indoors and also outdoor on their patio. For appetizers, we ordered the calamari and the arugula salad. I love how the calamari came in big pieces, had a really nice lemon zest to the flavor. For an entree we split the mushroom pizza, which had a burst of flavor. Overall a nice place for dinner. Next time I’d like to try the pastas and maybe a dessert to get a more holistic review.
