Today was such perfect weather, and we wanted a casual outdoor lunch. Scrolling through, I came upon Malelani Cafe in Mt Airy. Nearby Mediterranean with solid 5-star reviews? Yes, please! I am Mediterranean, and I had the craving. I never expected to be blown away. We were.
Malelani is a small corner storefront with large windows and an outdoor patio at the side. Large, unadorned windows welcome in light and opportunities for people watching (Mermaid Bar is across the street).
The small menu allows for the perfection of what they offer, and EVERYTHING is outstanding. I had the chicken salad platter. Husband had the shwarma platter. Platters come with an assortment of standard mezze from the Levant. I never imagined raving about tzatziki since it's a simple recipe, but I also never imagined so many places can screw it up. THIS was tzatziki, the perfect proportion of fresh dill, not jarred, which makes a difference, lemon juice and garlic in a thick creamy yogurt. Absolutely sublime.
Okay, so I'm a poor excuse for a Lebanese since I hate hummus, but Malelani's black bean hummus has made me a fan. Adding a bit of the pickled onion and cabbage to the pita scoop of hummus creates these intermittent bursts of various flavors that compliment each other well.
For me, pita has been merely the vehicle by which food travels to my mouth. Warm, a little crisp in spots from the grill and firm enough for a proper mezze scoop, this pita can hold its own.
The chicken salad was awesome. Fresh roasted chicken diced with red onions, yellow raisins, and was that apple? I dunno. This chicken salad was filling and refreshing. Really well thought out.
The shwarma was tasty. Not as spicy as I make it, but it was still a good dish that will be ordered again.
Lemon juice is king here at Malelani, and this Leb rejoices. We'll definitely make this a regular stop.
