10 Must-Try San Antonio Food Trucks - Eater Austin

"Former Spurs player and two-time NBA champion Malik Rose scores yet again with his food truck Malik’s Philly’s Phamous Cheesesteaks. With locations in Midtown and the northeast side, Philly’s Phamous combines Rose’s hometown staple with a little bit of San Antonio flavor. The best example of this is the Phlaming Philly, a cheesesteak served with choice of ribeye steak or chicken topped with onions, Hot Cheetos, and queso." - Polly Anna Rocha

Cool hangout with a lot of nearby food truck options. Was excited to try this place out as I’ve been meaning to go for awhile. Service was mid and the sandwich was alright. Honestly kind of underwhelming for the price. Got the Malik, which is supposed to come with extra meat. It was good but not impressed for the price and especially with the consideration of it being a food truck.

Google
📖Read this first...this is a food truck in the back of another restaurant called Screaming Chameleon. There are multiple food trucks and plenty of parking spaces. There are also plenty of seating as well. You get your food from the food trucks then you can get drinks inside of Screaming Chameleons restaurant. I had a bacon ranch cheesesteak Made with ribeye steak. The cheesesteaks were amazing. The bun was soft, the cheese was warm goey, the seasoning was perfect and the bacon was salty and plentiful. The best cheesesteak I have ever had....and I just came from a family gathering in Philly and I had cheesesteaks, but this is one of my favorite places.

I'm an electric wheelchair user and came over to this shaded food truck area with my partner this evening to show him the loaded fries from this place. I got the Parmesan fries with ribeye steak added on top. After eating about 75%, I noticed that I needed more carbs for my meal (based on my medical needs at the moment) and so we went back to get their Water Ice and I asked how much it would be for a bun for me to put my leftover loaded fries into. He told me not to worry about it and toasted it for me! It was so flipping good and I 100% appreciated it. This place has been great every time I've been here.

Google
Best phillys I've had so far. I really liked the variety of signature sandwiches and loaded fries. Water ice was very refreshing. So be returning. I'm bringing my kids next time.

Google
Best food ever tastes just like home! I also got a Philadelphia water ice blue berry and it was delicious! Absolutely must recommend these guys enough! Check em out at screaming chameleon in Universal City!!

Google
Heard Malik's was moving next month (from the O'Connor location) and they have been on my list to try for a loooonnggg time, so we decided to stop by. It was a little pricier than I anticipated buuutttt I have never had a cheesesteak taste SO damn good!! We got the large Phlaming Philly, large Elder Eats Cheesesteak, and the Cheesy Bacon Ranch Phries totaling $48.10 before tip. I included the menu/receipt so you can see all what was on it. I definitely gotta give them a 10/10!!🔥 These philly's were so tender and juicy! I definitely like cheese so the Elder Eats was perfect but because it was SO filling I could only eat half 🤣😂!

Good tasty Philly, extra good with the cheese fries

Google
Go somewhere else. Over priced for late food. I’ve given this place multiple try’s and orders always take longer then their supposed too. Order said it would be done by 6:45pm (placed by 6:08) order didn’t get done till 7:15. Save yourself the trip and go to Charlie’s or somewhere else.

Yelp
Freaking delicious. I've never had a real Philly cheese steak but I got an original at Malik's and it was so hot and flavorful. It was juicy and a little cheesy and very well seasoned. The guy in the truck was very nice and connected with me over the style of jacket I was wearing I went to the new location at the screamin Chameleon and it seemed like a really good vibe.

Yelp
Food is ok. Good even. But I kinda hate it here. It feels pricey, because I'm old and that happens, but also because it is. And maybe I'm misunderstanding the party who's meant to compensate the employees, in a food truck where I mostly order Togo food from a kiosk. But it's a little offensive to make me order off from a machine and then default a tip in.

Yelp
The last time I went to Malik's, I got the Malik's Philly with lettuce and tomatoes, and it was delicious. But this time I went, they did a horrible job. The meat looks different. It looks like ground beef, not steak, the vegetables were not on the Philly, and it looks much smaller than normal. I am severely underwhelmed with the second impression. With how amazing the first experience was, they should be ashamed of themselves this second go round. I'm not sure what happened, but they should not have even opened the truck up to night if they were going to serve this food.

Yelp
Went to the one in the rose bush. Came for lunch with some coworkers. I had high hopes, yes again because of how they hyped and reviews. I was expecting to be blown away. Well...I can only say mediocre. The Philly cheesesteak I had at the westlakes movies by marbach was way better and that's from a movie theatre. The one I got served here was under seasoned, and needed more cheese. I also had the Philly fries. Those were better than the sandwich but not by much. The reason it's not a two was the amount of fries, and they didn't skimp on the toppings! Coworkers are not looking good this year with the recommendations.

Yelp
We were blessed to find Malik's Phamous Cheesesteaks during covid and we've been coming ever since!! The consistency of hot, fresh to order cheesesteaks with meat, cheese and toppings piled on...every time! The flavor is perfectly seasoned and proportionate to the order. If you don't know what to get, they make great suggestions. Service is top notch every time and they treat you like they really appreciate your business! I can't say enough about the courtesy and professionalism. The ambiance is fantastic! The Rose Bush has a little bit of everything there. You can have private parties, you can play adult games like connect four or with big blocks, the kids can play on the playground and you can watch the games! Located right off of San Pedro, it's conveniently located not too far from Banana's Billiards and SAC. Malik Cheesesteak Malik Chicken

Yelp
Not bad, and hey, A for effort. Definitely A-OK if you're craving a cheesesteak, but as for being similar to a Philly Cheesesteak? Nope. The bread's a good match but the steak + cheese is saltier and more processed tasting. Kind of a shady area (safety wise) and not shady enough (heat wise). It's a place with limited cover from the sun, so be aware if you visit during periods of heat or rain. Service is pretty 'eh', with the guy taking my order being a little short, even for a Philly guy. Still, worth a shot if you're in the area and want to try a passable cheesesteak! This place scores a 3 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing away after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. Would be OK having a nosh here with Mother Mary. 3 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Joseph good. Would be OK having a beer here with Jesus' Dad. 2 out of 5 stars: Come-to-the-Apostles good. Meh. Wouldn't have my last supper here. 1 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Nobody good. I wouldn't have my penultimate supper here, either.

Yelp
I stopped by the north east side location for a quick bite. Wasn't sure what I really wanted so I asked for recommendations, really wasn't getting much help though. I went with a small Philadelphian and it was pretty decent. I wanted to be blown away, but just wasn't. It wasn't bad, but it just didn't taste like what I want the best cheesesteak in the city to taste like. Know that could also just be the type that I got so next time I'll try a different one. I would've liked this truck more if the service was better. I thought the guy taking my order was a little rude and even denied me when I asked if I could grab some content of him making the sandwich. I asked first because I know not everyone is comfortable but it really wasn't that involved and just caught me off guard. The bottom line with this place though, is that if you're craving a cheesesteak, this place will do the trick. But if you're looking for the most epic cheesesteak, you might have to give it a few tries.

Yelp
Best cheesesteak I've had outside of Philly. If you want anything equal or better you're gonna have to go to Philadelphia. We ordered a small Philly Cheesesteaks, Phlamin Hot Philly, and the Elder Cheesesteak. Service was on point. Young man took our order and had food ready in a timely manner. Although they offer indoor seating, it was still too hot to sit there and eat. So we took ours to go. On a cooler day the vibe of the place would've been nice to enjoy.

Yelp
Great food & friendly service. Top of the line Ribeye steak & amoroso rolls is used to create an authentic Philly.

Yelp
I visited the food truck park, the Rose Bush off of San Pedro. This place is a awesome place to visit. There are a lot of different kinds of delicacies, from a seafood truck, Ramen, truck, chicken wing truck, and then you have the Philly truck. The guy behind the counter is phenomenal and will help you make the best Philly you would love. I ordered the regular Philly with mozzarella on top and a side of fries. This was the BEST thing I have ever had at a food truck. It came hot and fresh and yummy. The Philly itself had wonderful flavor. It was moist. The meat was tender and perfect. The onions were awesome and the melted cheese on top was just phenomenal. The fries were crunchy and perfect. Now you can add extra things to your fries here but I chose just to get the plain fries and I loved them. The Rose Bush is a place off of San Pedro and they have a wide variety food trucks available. They have a seafood truck, Ramen, truck, chicken wing truck, and the best Philly cheesesteaks ever. This place is good for a family night out. It has a ping-pong table, corn hole, connect four and Jenga. It also has a small playground area and a small basketball goal. The kids would love to run around and have fun. It's fenced in, so you don't have to worry about them running into the street. Definitely put this on your list of coming by and getting some yummy yummy treats

Yelp
Best in town!!! Always have the greatest service!! We go at least twice a month. Plus now they have more locations!!!

Yelp
Absolutely amazing cheesesteak. The Malik style had extra cheese and steak and so worth it. The bun was soft and surprisingly durable to hold all the food in it without breaking. Fresh cheese fries on the side is a great companion for this food. Gentleman who took our order was very friendly and made great recommendations, including The Malik, and he wasn't fibbing. We enjoyed our meal outside where they had metal tables, bean bag toss, jinga, and more. I settled for sports on their big screen tv while enjoying my meal. If you are looking for a great Philly Cheesesteak, go to this one off San Pedro Ave.

Joss F.

Yelp
Frickin incredible!!!!!! I'm from Philly and this is the best cheesesteak I've ever had! Perfectly seasoned. They have an original Philly but also have tons of unique, original cheese steaks that I've never seen on another menu that are fire! Oh, and the Italian water ice is amazing! YOU MUST GO!

Joshua C.

Yelp
the cheesesteaks at Maliks are literally the best cheesesteaks in San Antonio. The Rosebush locations had the best vibes and it's easy to spend hours their. I LOVE MALIKS PHILLY PHAMOUS!!!!!!!

Yelp
I don't know who the hell Malik is, but I'm about to start telling people he's my second cousin on my father's side. My guy's cheesesteaks are ON POINT! I'm from the northeast and after NYC, Philly is my favorite city. I've eaten at all the "best" cheesesteak places in the city and Malik's is right up there with the best, dare I say even better. As I stood in line at the food truck park trying to decide which cheesesteak to get, I heard the ancestors calling to me, "Pick the one that sounds most authentic." I skipped the Elder Eats. No shade, but that seemed too SATX for my people, and settled on the Malik Cheesesteak. Black Jesus anointed that sandwich from bread to mayo. Black angels sung out the hallelujah chorus when I bit into it. My spirit was comforted as I ate the food of my people. The meat was seasoned. Not "salt and pepper is too spicy" seasoned, but "Big Mama in Soul Food" seasoned. The bread was fluffy and warm, the toppings minimal because the meat was doing the heavy lifting. Utter perfection. Even the fries seemed to taste like they touched the hem of Marcus Garvey's cloak. THIS is what San Antonio is missing. Authentic food, made by folks who know what the hell they're doing and don't try to go overboard with the gimmicks. Malik and his whole crew are invited to the cookout now and forever.

Yelp
My man grew up in Philly, so we were excited to come out and try Malik's. First, Maps brings you to the shopping corner directly across from it (on the NE side of the intersection). Malik's is a truck parked in the warehouse area on the SW corner. It was over 100* outside. Thankfully, there was sheltered seating. It would have been nice if the fans were on, though. As we were waiting, we saw some patrons come up and grab food they ordered ahead. That's a pretty cool ordering option! I got the regular Philadelphian with a side of jalapeños. The hubs got the southwest Philly (also regular). They were perfectly sized! Honestly, I couldn't even finish mine. They were absolutely delicious! Why not 5 stars? Well, that's the thing about food trucks in the San Antonio summers... if you do not have adequate processes and equipment, your guests will end up with minor food poisoning due to T/T abuse. It was very clear that the truck was not cool enough. The poor guy working in it looked like he was way past done melting alongside the Phillies he was making. Sorry, but we aren't fans of headaches and spontaneous dates with the toilet seats.

Yelp
I've always loved me a good cheesesteak sandwich, even went to Philadelphia to try the best. Found Malik's on a search and this place stood out by its menu, so I just had to try. Ordered the 'the Malik' with ribeye and a side of the phresh cut Phries. 10 mins later my order is ready and once smell of the phries and I new they were good, the sandwich is exactly how I like it moist fluffy bread full of shaved rib eye, cheese and onions. So good! Well done! I'll be back!

Bianca H.

Yelp
Service was awesome! The subs were so flavorful and packed. My kids and I have been several times already. Each time we try a different sandwich and it just gets better and better. It's become one of our favorite spots. Do not miss out!

Yelp
I've been addicted to this place since I lived in SA and when they only had 1 food truck. While I lived a few minutes away from where they were, the Philly Cheesesteak never made it on one piece and by the time I was around the block from my house, the thing was gone. Now everything I head to SA, this is a must stop. I either have the original (extra toasted and extra seasoning), the philadelphian or the bacon ranch. I just can't seem to get away from these three. And their fries . . . goodness . . . incredible! Whether you get the original, the cheese, the bacon cheese or the herb, you can't go wrong. This is really a must try when in SA. Order ahead online so it's ready when you get there and you can throw down in your car as your phillycheese steak will not make it intact by the time you get home!
google avatar

Paul W.

Yelp
Great cheesesteak and service was friendly. The area is a little shady, and there were some colorful characters hanging around. The cheesesteak made up for it, although the fries were flavorful, but soggy. If I'm in the area I'll be back, but I'd probably skip the fries.

Tia T.

Yelp
This food truck sells aaaahhhhmmmmazing Philly cheese steaks! The cheese.., the bread.., the toppings... chef's kiss . I absolutely love their subs.

Whitney H.

Yelp
Tried this last night at the food truck park on 1604. It was terrible. The Philly did not have onion and I am not sure if it didn't have cheese or there was so little it melted into the bread after the meat was put on top of it. Pickled jalapeños were not pickled. Easily the worst cheesesteaks I've ever had. And the fries have no flavor at all. They were covered in the seasoning and yet somehow still tasted like nothing.
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
When I'm craving a true Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich, there is only one place to go.....Malik's!! They have the best and are as authentic as being in Philly! This particular food truck is just down the road from my office, so convenience is key. The Malik Philly 8/10 - the bun is fresh and tasty and it comes with your choice of cheese or Wiz. Choose mushrooms, peppers, onions, etc. The meat is very good with good seasoning. The overall experience is legit! The staff 7/10 - typically the staff working are friendly and helpful. The atmosphere 5/10 - it's a food truck in a sketchy area, lol. No seating, just carry out. Wish they would come to New Braunfels, TX!! I highly recommend trying them out if you haven't already!!

Bryon M.

Yelp
The food is absolutely great and the eating area nice and comfortable. 2 things, it's always a begging homeless person (at least one every time I go). I always give but it a security issue when my family is with me. My last three order was incorrectly made even after I spoke on it. I travel too far to come home and it's not what I ordered. (Red Cadie).
google avatar

Giovanna M.

Yelp
I'm not from Philly but I've had cheesesteaks in Philly & Reading and this is a decent cheesesteak. Not as big but it's hearty enough. The meat was well seasoned (San Antonio eateries rarely season anything well). The sandwich is a bit soggy but it's really just that the bread is very soft and absorbs the oils from the meat. I'm not too mad at that. I mean unless you're going to eat in the parking lot, when you get home it's going to be that way. I ordered a Malik regular & large fry (a large is a large so I could only eat half). Speaking of fries...the fries are amazing. I'm not really into extras on my fries so these plain were perfect. I couldn't wait to get home and hit them with some malt vinegar. This location is closer to home than the San Pedro location. It's located in a corner store lot next to a strip mall. I ordered online and picked up at the designated time -on time. No wait. The second location is closer to work and I think I may try that location one day to see if there's a difference. Overall, I enjoyed the meal and I'll likely return when I get a cheesesteak craving.

Kristen M.

Yelp
Amazing food!! Great service! My family and i go often to the other location but it's a bit far from us. So happy they've opened another location much closer!

Joshua II S.

Yelp
All 3 phillys were amazing! Hospitality was great nick and Vince were real cool guys. Got the food in about 10 minutes should really give them a shot it's worth the money.
google avatar

Brock G.

Yelp
Easy 5 stars! Literally every bite was full of meat and cheese. This place is the most legit philly cheese steak spot in SA! The bread authentic, and the fries are homemade and we'll seasoned. The directions are a little off getting into the parking lot, but who cares! If you want a real deal philly, go here you won't regret it!

Sarah S.

Yelp
first time eating here it's amazing food is delicious and the customer service is amazin. I would definitely recommend to others and will definitely come back here again. The portions are very large.

Dani G.

Yelp
Not only was the food amazing, it truly tasted like an east coast sub. They also helped me out. I had accidentally ordered from the wrong location. The customer service representative quickly got our order cancelled at that location and placed our order at the correct one. She went above and beyond to insure I received great customer service

Mitch A.

Yelp
I'm never ordering there again, unsanitary. The guy wasn't wearing hairnet, beard cover and gloves. Plus he was touching the food with his disgusting hands not knowing where or what he touched. He could've been scratching his balls, ass or head then touches your food while cooking it and wrapping it. So folks next time you go to this place look at how they handle your food. They aren't wearing any sanitary protection like gloves, beard cover, and hair net.... If I was the health inspector I would fail them and close it down till they are properly met with the requirements......I'm definitely going to report this to the health departments. Disgusting.

Matthew C.

Yelp
Amazing best Phili in San Antonio I recommend the Wiz cheese on any sandwich fries are really good need to try bacon fries as well

Enzeya R.

Yelp
Malik's Philly's Phamous Cheesesteaks is an amazing food truck I personally love the Philly Cheesesteaks. The cheesesteaks I had over all time were very flavorful and the fries had many options I personally like the cheese fries with bacon.

Carlos T.

Yelp
Cheesesteak was good, but I ordered large fries and got a small order of fries dumped into a large fry container. This will be my last fries order and the fries were trash
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
I have had a craving for cheesesteak for more than a week, did some looking, and decided this was the place - SO happy I was right! I ordered through a delivery app and everything was packaged incredibly well, all piping hot! The Parmesan herb fries didn't get soggy because they are well fried and you'll see in the picture it's a crazy generous serving - didn't even get the large! Even better, they layered the cheese/herb seasoning and didn't just pile it all on the top. The Malik cheesesteak itself was absolutely wonderful (I did get a side of cheese wiz). AND this is the best, least plastic-tasting cheese wiz I've had. It was plastic-y at all, but you know what I'm getting at. Eat here!

Adrian H.

Yelp
Stopped at the food truck location on the northeast side with two co workers. I ordered an original Philly large with mozzarella. I wasn't sure if the guy had a bad attitude but both co workers stood and watched me order and confirmed the guy looked annoyed with doing his job. The large is priced at 13 dollars the added mozzarella cheese made it 14.50 and even after the questionable customer service I tipped 5 bucks hoping the food would do its justice. Not even close. I received my food and opened it in front of my two co workers who laughed at the sight of the now 20 dollar Philly cheese steak that looked like it was suffering from "shrinkage". After seeing photos of what the large is supposed to look like I'm positive the guy intentionally sold me a smaller sandwich at the price of a large.

James H.

Yelp
Taste like someone drove to Philly to pick up Chinese food, then pulled a uturn and drove that Chinese food back to San Antonio in the back seat of a 96 civic with no air conditioning. Do yourself a favor and just go buy the frozen cheesesteak meat from the frozen aisle of HEB. Throw it on the hot asphalt, serve it on cardboard and you'll have a better experience than I just had. Yelp wouldn't allow me to post 0 stars which is why it gets one.
google avatar

Mackenzie R.

Yelp
These Philly cheesesteaks beat the ones I have had in Philadelphia! The service was quick and the food is 10/10! We had the original and the bacon ranch cheesesteak with fries. Everything was amazing! Will be coming back
google avatar

Martina H.

Yelp
Always hits the spot! Best Philly in San Antonio. The garlic parmigiana fries a nice treat in the side
google avatar

Josh M.

Yelp
Amazing food. The sandwiches are gooey and cheesy and best when they're hot of course. The Philly Phries is one of our go-tos...the cheese steak is so good over the fries. Highly recommend you give this spot a try.

Bryana P.

Yelp
Love the Phillys here. The Malik is my favorite with banana pepper and a toasted bun.

Sue B.

Yelp
Really good! Been meaning to try them forever. Glad we finally did! The bread is wonderful, meat is delicious, no fat or gristly bits, fries were good also! Will go back!

Maddy L.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in San Antonio. My boyfriend and I eat here a few times a month. Such a treat. Absolutely amazing every time. Super consistent. Moderately priced. Love this place so much.
google avatar

Kristen M.

Yelp
Great customer service but not a good Philly. No hot cherry peppers, no provolone, and very soggy upon immediately getting it. I recommend you make the trip to YouZ Guys if you want a good cheesesteak. Giving three stars though because the guy was very friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Gina T.

Yelp
A delicious cheesesteak. Meat is tender and flavorful. The condiments do not over power the main ingredients. Staff is always friendly. If you enjoy a flavorful, hearty and a solid sandwich you will enjoy the sandwiches. The phresh fries were not overly dressed. Maintained crispy fry with great flavors. This place is great!

John Ryan J.

Yelp
It's hard to beat a good cheesesteak. The melty, gooey, cheesy meatiness is just classic comfort food at its best. And Malik's has a reputation of being the best food truck in San Antonio. On the recommendation of the man working the register, I got the Malik (extra meat, extra cheese, mushrooms, green peppers, onions, and I added mozzarella; $17.50) and cheesy bacon ranch fries ($11.00), both the large size. The cheesesteak was fantastic, textbook, everything you want from a cheesesteak, When you pulled it apart, the mozzarella stayed together well over a foot, the gooey goodness you want. All the flavors melded perfectly, and there were enough toppings that I had to pick up several forkfuls that just didn't stay inside after I folded the open-faced sandwich closed. Delicious. The cheesy bacon ranch fries were exceptional as well. Beautifully seasoned, then dripping with Wiz, ranch, and bacon so that every bite was more or less loaded. They do not scrimp on toppings here! While everything was good, I am not sure I agree with the assessment of it being the best food truck in San Antonio (see my review for Carnitas Don Raul). However, it is fantastic and absolutely worth checking out. I will definitely be back, if for no other reason than to try some of their more unique cheesesteaks. Until next time, Stay hungry, my friends!

Becca H.

Yelp
Love coming here for the vibe. The Italian ice is amazing and the Philly's are even better

Romeo V.

Yelp
Sooo good, I've been here multiple times and not once have I had a bad experience, they have a nice setup as well with games you could play right next to their spot, so I'd 100% Recommend they do not skimp on the orders as well, which is another plus

Matt C.

Yelp
By far and away the best cheesesteaks in San Antonio! The parm fries are also excellent!
