The 13 Best Restaurants In Troy, New York

"Mallo’s is a lowkey sandwich shop with some cool contemporary art on the walls. Expect to find things like a deeply satisfying cauliflower reuben and an elevated take on a classic Italian combo. The best thing, though, is unquestionably their onion rings—the onions are lightly pickled and the batter is perfectly crisp. Make liberal use of the accompanying buttermilk ranch, and save room for a slice of cake from Rage Cakes in Albany for dessert. " - carina finn koeppicus

Google
I’ll be honest, the only thing I’ve had from here is the turkey sandwich. I don’t think I’ve ever raved over a turkey sandwich; but I’m not exaggerating when I say that I tell everyone who will listen that this is the best turkey sandwich I’ve ever had. There is some kind of magic in that sandwich.

Google
Hands down the best sandwiches in the whole capital region. Super high quality ingredients and everything is always really fresh with tons of veggies snuck in for such a unique and delicious combination of flavors. Mallo’s is my absolute favorite spot for a quick bite, the staff are so nice and they always have really good music and ambiance. A lot of restaurants put 0 effort or flavor into their vegan menu options.. not Mallo’s. You’d think vegan food is their specialty because they have 2 absolutely phenomenal vegan sandwiches. The Veggie can be ordered with homemade cashew cheese sauce that is to die for, and the Cauli-Reuben is what dreams are made of (caramelized onion heaven). If you have room for it, try their homemade potato chips! I can’t recommend Mallo’s enough, it’s 100% worth the trip to downtown troy!

Google

Google
Absolutely delicious cauliflower Reuben (and I’m not vegetarian or vegan). It just tastes good! Also had onion rings and chips and those were delicious as well. Tried the Italian sub, and the turkey from friends and neither disappointed. The turkey was out of this world, so I highly recommend it. Don’t skip this place!

Google
finally got to try Mallo's! first off, gorgeous spot and great vibes. the food was even better than i could have imagined. i got the roast turkey sandwich and it was exquisite. house made bread, fresh and vibrant ingredients, generous portions, the house made ribbon cut chips are addictive and even the pickle was like a crisp summer day. can't wait to go back, thank you so much

Google
Our Track Team placed a group order with Eat Mallos for our team dinner & it was an awesome experience. The service was amazing, delivery was seamless, and the team absolutely loved their food. The chicken sandwich was a favorite of the group, and the onion rings were especially outstanding!

Google
The soup was amazing, curin, black bean, kale, chicken! Yum! And the turkey sandwich was as phenomenal. Definitely recommend this place especially if you want to keep it on the healthy side but still so delicious.

Google
I am very picky about food, and the egg sandwich I had here was the best sandwich I ever had in my entire life. I chose sausage option. Forgive me for the bad photo, but trust me, you will not ever be disappointed here. The boss is pretty chill as well.

Yelp
The crispy chicken sandwich was absolutely divine. And HUUUUUUGE!! The host was so chill and kind. The environment itself was really cutesy and inviting. Will totally be returning in the future!!!!

Yelp
The chicken sandwich is excellently done! I ordered with my office and we all got a bunch of these chicken sandwiches from a recommendation. It was excellent, and I was surprised to find they used chicken thighs, the superior cut of chicken. The chicken had creamy buratta, a heap of arugula and a little too much balsamic for my liking. The sandwich was huge and of high quality. I would get it again!

Yelp
I was on my way to the Korean restaurant nearby, but I stopped when I saw a cute cartoon dog eating a strawberry on the window of this spot. I hopped on Yelp, saw the great reviews, took 1 minute to browse the menu, and I turned around and walked right in to Mallo's. The space is pink with black and white checkered floor. I was greeted as I walked in and they were patient while I read the menu (again). Everything sounded great but I went with the veggie sandwich but made into a wrap. They brought my food out to me on a little tray with a paper branded with the same cute dog. I loved the wrap! I'm glad I went the wrap route - it was perfect. Mozzarella, arugula, fried eggplant, olives - yummm. It was so delicious and flavorful and a big portion! I took leftovers back to my hotel and had them the next day. I'm so glad I stopped in to this spot and would definitely come back for more of their tasty food.

Yelp
My favorite place to get lunch in Troy, hands down, and while I do I understand there are A LOT of great options in Troy, I find myself here week after week. The sandwiches are 12-steps beyond delicious; sure, you're thinking...what could be so great about a sandwich, right? Get yourself to Mallos and order what looks best to you from the small, but mighty, menu board of options and you will see what I'm talking about. The ingredients are all top tier quality to my tastebuds, and every layer of each sandwich I've tried so far has been prepared perfectly. The Roasted Turkey has been my favorite, and one I've returned to already. Rotating specials are sure to catch your eye and Gluten Free bread is also an option for friends in need of that restriction. And allow me to let you in on a little secret: Mallo's has the BEST onion rings in the 518. They start by pickling the red onions, then tempura battered, fried the exact right temperature and color, and severed with buttermilk ranch (a Russian dressing substitution available for vegan-visitors and oddball-ranch-haters, too.) Another side option, the fresh-cut ribbon chips are exactly the kind of potato chips I want with my sammie from an extra-special place like Mallo's; crisp, salty, and still warm from the kitchen. The cashier stand, always staffed with a friendly face who chats happily with regulars and first timers alike, also doubles as a refrigerated case offering a variety of beverages, desserts, and additional sides to enjoy onsite or take to go. Service has always seemed pretty speedy, considering how freshly everything is prepared; I think the most I've waited for food after ordering is 7 or 8 minutes, on the busiest of my visits, when I arrived to a line of 2 people ahead of me and 3 others already waiting for their food. Incredibly impressive. Love the style of this spot, with bright walls and art that is interesting to look at and chat about. In the warmer months, I've found tables outside to be pleasant, but almost always post up at the window facing bar to people watch the comings and goings of downtown Troy.

Yelp
Mallo's opened this week in the former Berben & Wolff's near the corner of 4th Street and Ferry Street. They serve up gourmet sandwiches & wraps, salads, soups, and vegan choices (Cauliflower Reuben, Veggie Sandwich). They have cold drinks (bottled water, Polar sodas, Mexican Coke, energy drinks) too. The place has a feminine feel here with light pink painted walls, local artwork, and black & white checker floors (like before). There's table seating and stool seating along the front window. I stopped in here for dinner takeout recently. I ordered the Roast Turkey Sandwich ($10 plus tax) and Creamy Corn Chowder with Potato ($5 plus tax). The Roast Turkey Sandwich (Sub) had roasted turkey slices, arugula, red pickled onions, crisp pancetta, garlic aioli, cheese on a firm chewy sub roll. The Creamy Corn Chowder had a sweet flavor. I enjoyed my dinner with a cold sparkling water. I would definitely return again and try some of their other sandwiches here.

Yelp
What's not to love? Delicious, creative sandwiches and soup and yes pickled onion rings with buttermilk dip, served by a super friendly dude in a bright, cheery room with a large front window onto Ferry Street. And desserts! A food-centric corner on Ferry and 4th(?) next door to Sunhee Korean, and catty corner to La Capital Tacos! They know delicious food in Troy!

Yelp
You approach this store that is painted pink throughout with black and white tile - you already know what it's about. Everything is immediately its very own self, the sandwiches, the pickled onion rings (if you question them, you're missing out. They fuck) and the pickles that come with the sandwiches remind you of the OG pickle ads that talked about the crunch. If you're in Troy and you don't go here, you'll forever be wandering about the experience that you very obviously missed out on. Truly the closest thing you'll get to experiencing that scene in Ratatouille where Remy is closing his eyes and feeling his world change by flavor combinations.

Yelp
House made chips, done. House smoked turkey, also a plus. I usually get the Italian mix and it is perfect. The people working are usually very friendly as well which is a huge plus.

Yelp
I had a wonderful falafel special and a really good and different carrot cake slice - both were excellent. Very fresh, crispy, light and flavorful falafel with tahini, feta, great veggies - it was really good. The other sandwiches and other items I saw dashing out of the kitchen all looked great too. I had mine to go, but the place was hopping and sparkling clean.

Yelp
So happy I was told to check this place out. Went with friends and had 3 different sandwiches + house made chips + pickles. Loved everything. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
This place is a gem! Wish I had discovered it sooner, and if you don't try their sandwiches you are missing out. Oh, but don't forget the well seasoned and satisfying soup. The love and care they put into the quality they serve is incredible and not frequently encountered. This is no cookie cutter fast food joint. Limited menu but what they have is done with a unique twist and an awareness of how to pull it together in a way will make your heart sing. No bland food, but sensitively seasoned with an eye to texture as well as flavor--from the fabulous crunch of your bread to the amazing 4 day in house brined turkey set off perfectly by its accompaniments--yum! I want to try everything but can't let go of the turkey I love. I almost had forgotten that a turkey sandwich didn't have to be the meat in a soggy boring piece of bread with cardboard tomato, ho hum mustard and a wilted lettuce leaf. There should be a line out the door and down the block. Maybe I shouldn't tell people and keep it pretty calm and relaxed. Just a few tables, a smile as you enter, pride in their product. Get the picture? Get there soon, and don't be off put because it doesn't look like your typical menu. It isn't typically made--it is great instead.

Yelp
I've said it before and I'll say it again, where chef Ian Brower goes, I follow. This time it's the aesthetically pleasing Mallo's -- a much improved little eatery in the former Berben & Wollf's space. While Mallo's is not fully vegetarian/vegan the meat-free options are plenty and delicious. Mallo's is offering sandwiches, soups, sides, and Chef Ian's pickled/fermented goods. I was especially drawn in by the cauliflower Rueben -- fermented cauliflower, roasted onion, Gruyère, and Russian dressing -- it felt like the best version of an adult grilled cheese, I loved the combo of slightly funky cauliflower with slightly sweet onions. The side of house-made chips were so thin and well-seasoned. Looking forward to returning and trying more of their veggie offerings -- the soups and their fried soy curl sandwich look so good, plus I want to buy some house-made pickles to take home. I'm so happy to be able to eat Chef Ian's food again, and I'm here to the direction Mallo's is going in!

Yelp
We loved our sandwiches here! I had the turkey on a gf brioche bun and it was so yummy! I even brought half home and it was great later too. Chips were delicious. They are great with gluten free needs. Highly recommend you give it shot. Great vibe too!
