15 Restaurants & Bars To Help You Get Through Winter

"You know who doesn’t have to deal with black ice and snow that suddenly turns into rain? People who are smart enough to live on the Amalfi Coast. Pretend you’re one of them at Mama Capri. Even though you probably can’t make use of the backyard for a couple more months, the interior of this coastal Italian spot in Cobble Hill has white brick walls, turquoise chairs, and woven basket lights that make you feel like you should be wearing at least one piece of linen clothing." - matt tervooren

Some of the best Italian food I've ever had! Everything we ordered came out fresh, and it was all delicious. The limoncello raviolis were absolutely incredible. If you're in Brooklyn you need to eat here!

Google
Felt great to be back in Italy briefly for dinner 🤤 That’s honestly how we felt while we enjoyed some calamari ( Fritto Misto del Mare ) and the seafood pasta ( Pasta allo Scoglio ). Everything tasted so fresh and full of flavor. I did expect a different pasta with our dish but the waitress clarified with us that some things aren’t on the menu anymore but you can still order it as long as they have the ingredients. So I will be back soon to try it. The limoncello truffle ( Tartufo Al Limoncello ) was the cherry on top of the night. We saw they had a happy hour until 7 so we’ll try to make it in time for that next time. Come in and try it all for yourself. They def know how to give you quality Italian food in downtown Brooklyn. Thank you!

Google
It was a cute small place. We went early evening so it wasn't too crowded. I appreciate everything being made to order so the wait was a bit. Also they didn't have bacon for my carbonara but it was still good. The fries shrimp was also perfection.

Google
Amazing experience at this wonderful restaurant. Very small and quaint, suggest making a reservation. There is also a bar area to eat at! Delicious food and amazing specials. Bread for the table, we also had the spinach salad, arugula salad, burrata cheese and seafood appetizer, all were phenomenal! ( especially the spinach salad - which had a perfect amount of each item in the salad ). I had the gnocchi for my main meal & it was perfect! Around the table was the spaghetti with seafood, meat sauce, olive oil, lemon spaghetti with fried zucchini & traditional pasta with sauce. We all enjoyed our meals so much we didn’t have a bite left on the plates. The decor here is very cute, beach themes as if you’re on the coast of Italy 🇮🇹 lovely restaurant! Amazing service & delicious food !! Thank you for a wonderful meal and an amazing night in Brooklyn !

Google
This is absolutely an amazing restaurant. I've been here a couple of times already with my friends. The staff are super friendly. The food is awesome. The place is very clean and neat. The pricing is very reasonable, in my opinion. I must say I enjoy looking at plates. They're fun to look at while you eat. It's always a different cute plate. Hopefully you'll find joy looking at them.

Google
Everything about this place is fresh. I actually said “this makes me want to get ‘Al dente’ tattooed on myself” and “Stanley Tucci would s**t his pants” during our meal here. We completely cleaned every plate. Great music, very friendly owner and crew, and I love their decor. They really leaned into the theme and I’m here for it.

Google
My third time at Mama Capri. Never disappoints. Food is excellent and authentic. The Prickly Pear Spritz is delicious.

Google
The decoration of the place is spectacular, the attention from the staff is incredible, the food was delicious, we started with the octopus carpaccio which I recommend, the orange mixes with the fennel and makes you experience an incredible sensation in your mouth, the Pasta and hamburger were very well prepared and the taste was spectacular. Good music, good food and the attention was phenomenal.

Yelp
We came in on a Sunday night for a an early dinner. We got the calamari and bolognese. Calamari was good and the bolognese was okay. I'd recommend other pasta items. Service was great, very kind staff. The vibe is cozy as the space is quaint with dimmed lighting.

Yelp
Randomly ventured into Mama Capri for dinner on a weekend evening and was surpised that there were maybe 4 parties present during prime dinner time. There was one staff member working and managing all of the tables. She was amazing and very friendly! However, I was disappointed in the risotto. Upon delivery it tasted as if it had been sitting out for a little while and was a bit cold. It also lacked flavor. Maybe it was the timing of our arrival, but this put a damper on Mama Capri for me and unfortunately, we will not be returning.

Yelp
We passed by hungry on a cold Friday evening and noticed there might be space at this cute place. The side is wallpapered in lemons and I couldn't help but think of summer. We ordered the caprese salad which was nicely coated in a tangy citrus dressing. I had the mama capri risotto which was very good though the portion rather small. My husband had the gnocchi alla sorrentina which he said was tasty. The waiter was attentive and pleasant as well!

Yelp
Cute neighborhood spot to hit your Italian cravings. Service was incredible friendly and prices are reasonable. Came here with my husband and we got the pasta special of the day with guanciale (pork cheek) which was delicious! We also got the steak with fries which was just average to me. The wine selection is great as I got a glass of a montepulciano and my husband got a barbera. The tiramisu was a highlight! You could taste that it was homemade as it had a great balance of cream, lady fingers, and coffee. It wasn't overly sweet either. Not the most mind blowing dishes I've ever had, but overall great option when you're in the mood for Italian with a welcoming ambiance.

Yelp
Such a cute little quant place. I didn't realize you can get reservations here but apparently you can? I think you have to call. My friend and I didn't have reservations but they sat us at the bar around 7PM on a Saturday night and it was perfectly fine for us. The service was impeccable, it was nice to chat with the servers and the bartender. I'd never had a aperol spritz before so they gave one to me on the house! It wasn't my favorite lol but when in... Capri lol Anyways, the pasta was cooked really well and the sauces were delicious! The bolognese was soo savory and the perfect amount of tart/acidic tomato. The cacio e Pepe had such a rich sauce but with the perfect spice of black pepper. Would love to come back someday when I'm in NYC again

Yelp
I came here on a Sunday past 2pm and got seated right away. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. I wasn't too hungry so I got the Mediterranean salad and added the shrimp. My friend got the bolognese. Our meal came with bread which was nice. My salad was on the smaller side and the shrimp was unexpectedly tiny and there was only 5 or so pieces. I expected more for $6. My friend's bolognese was good though! If I come back I'd get that!

Yelp
While the service was lovely, the atmosphere was so hot and uncomfortable we could not enjoy. There was no AC and the temperature was 98 degrees outside. We couldn't really eat an Italian meal and they didn't sit us in the backyard, which was open and available. It's expensive but you know where you are, so that wasn't a surprise. Wine runs up the bill and they don't put the wine in a bucket of ice in the sweltering hot restaurant. So the $50 bottle was warm in minutes. The fried calamari was tender and the highlight of the meal.

Yelp
We had lunch at this cute little Italian restaurant. The staff were lovely. Wine by the glass was very good and reasonably priced. The mixed salumi and cheese platter was enormous and big enough for four people to share. The seared tuna and eggplant parm were very good. We didn't order pasta, but liked what we saw at other tables. This is a nice casual restaurant worth checking out.

Yelp
Very nice and ambient setting. Service was great. There was the cheese balls that was a bit too salty for my liking so i took off a star. The prices were reasonable.

Gloria M.

Yelp
The food was amazing! From beginning to end! We had the calamari, bolognese, great service. Just flew in from Los Angeles and I was looking for Italian food and I was pleasantly surprised. Great service Simona was fabulous as a server and it's real authentic Italian cuisine. Let's not forget the dessert!
google avatar

Cryssa B.

Yelp
Food and service were amazing. Our server Lorenzo was fabulous. Decor is super cute. There was a table of 8 a few tables from us that were super loud and rude which made it really frustrating bc we couldn't hear each other speak over their yelling to one another. They should've been seated in the back where they could be rude and not care who was around them.

Yelp
Mama Capri is an attractive restaurant on Smith St. I stopped in for a bite and grabbed a bar stool. The menu is small, but good. I opted for the Scialatielli Pasta, and a glass of Pinot Grigio. My pasta was properly cooked, as was the seafood in it. My Pinot Grigio went perfectly with the Pasta. Alas the restaurant was empty, which is unfortunate because I liked the place.
google avatar

Yelp
I absolutely love this spot. Everything looks was just so yummy. There was no wait and was pretty empty. Service was great.

Yelp
Pretend like you're in Capri for a meal!! This restaurant is gorgeous! Beautiful decor with so much detail. The backyard has great seating as well! We ordered the muscles for an app and my partner who's hesitant to try new things loved it!!! We also got the lemon shrimp risotto and the octopus ragu. Both were incredible! But the lemon risotto was absolutely my favorite dish we tried. I would want to go back and try other menu items but would have a hard time not reordering that risotto!

Yelp
I had such a great time here tonight! The atmosphere, the music and the Risotto-Sauvignon combination brought me back a few years ago when I was in vacation in Italy with my wife. The price was okay, it's rare to find anquality-price restaurant as Mama Capri is, in Brooklyn. Very satisfied; We'll be back soon...

Amanda R.

Yelp
This is one of the best meals I've ever had. We were here for my husbands birthday and will absolutely return. Everything from app to dessert was spectacular and service was wonderful.

Yelp
Honestly not a spectacular meal which I'm sad to report because otherwise it's a lovely place. The outdoor seating was clean & pleasant. Rocco, working alone doing all front of house work for all tables inside & out, is a complete rock star. He was attentive, friendly and helped with menu questions. I was torn between the mussels & the scallops as my entree & he said the scallop dish was small but quite good so I went with that. Anyway, Rocco is a Star. The food: The bread basket was unappealingly boring. Sad bread, no butter, sad cold sauce. The appetizers were solid. Bruschetta: flavorful & fresh. Calamari: light & crispy. The entrees were another story. The Bolognese sauce was delicious but the pasta was raw. I understand al dente but this truly was way under that. Husband sat and chewed through the whole meal though. The scallops were fine, a small delicate dish overpowered by too much salt. I'm pretty sure we went on an off day. If there weren't so many restaurants on Smith St we want to check out, we'd likely go back and give them another try.

Yelp
Great Italian restaurant. Shared pasta with pesto and pistachios and octopus carpaccio risotto. both of the dishes were excellent!
google avatar

Leah C.

Yelp
It smelled kind of funny when I was here - even with the doors wide open on a winter afternoon. Because of this, I couldn't eat as much as I wanted to but my sister still devoured her food there and then. The portions are abundant and the flavor was good. But I don't think I'll sit inside again if I do go back.
google avatar

Cristina G.

Yelp
Came here to dine-in pre-COVID and I have to say, the ambiance is everything. I love how bright and inviting the decor is. They really hit the nail on the head with the Capri theme. And since we can't travel to Italy right now, a visit to Mama Capri will have to suffice. I ordered the Stuffed Calamari, which I found to be okay. Nothing ground-breaking, but nice to see how this dish is done in a region other than Sicily. Next time, I need to try a pasta dish for sure.
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
Great food! Great ambience. But the pasta was what I loved the most! I'll definitely be going back.
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
Updating my review since I visited pre pandemic. Still 5 stars! Wish I could give 10! They've added such a cute outdoor area with lovely lights and again a very authentic Capri vibe. They have very very cute and friendly Italian staff who honestly were so polite and helpful. The meat and cheese plate was awesome with honey straight from the comb! So good. Honestly this is such a hidden gem, I would usually keep it to myself but I want it to do well in these post pandemic times! Oh and our dog loved it
google avatar

Michele C.

Yelp
Fast service and food was fine but definitely not a good Italian restaurant. There was a bug in my friend's wine and instead of offering a new glass they just gave us a spoon. Honestly we would have fished it out anyway but the offer would have been nIce. Also ordered pasta and wasn't offered cheese or fresh pepper; when I asked for pepper they just gave me an airplane-sized shaker. I also think the owner writes most of the reviews, there is no way this place is 4.5 stars.

Yelp
Cozy Neapolitan spot on Smith! The nautical decor and upbeat Italian tunes are bright and welcoming. We stopped by for a late lunch and found a table immediately. There were a few groups of Italians scattered at other tables - all saying a "ciao grazie!" before leaving. We tried the Frito Misto del Mare to start. Deliciously fried mix of seafood like calamari, octopus and shrimp on a bed of salad. The tang of fresh lemon was perfect and we devoured the entire plate in minutes. For pasta we had the Scialatielli allo Scoglio and Gnocchi alla Sorrentina. The first, a seafood pasta, had a nice fresh pasta, thick and chewy. The clams and octopus were tasty and added a nice flavor to the sauce. The Gnocchi was served in a pot, baked with mozzarella on top. It was steaming hot the entire time (prepare your tongue!) with a flavorful tomato sauce with the soft gnocchi. We worked through 2 baskets of bread to eat as much of the sauce as possible. Only slight downs were that it took awhile sometimes to get ahold of our waiter to order/get the check, but otherwise service was friendly and professional. Also, prices are slightly higher than other pasta spots in town, but definitely worth it.

Yelp
Finally a real seafood restaurant from Italy! Went there tonight for dinner and it was so so so good. I've been looking for an Italian restaurant focused on seafood, Italian style and this place is authentic like a real restaurant in Capri or in the Amalfi coast. The staff is Italian from Ischia and Napoli. Bartolomeo was our waiter and he was super nice and friendly from the moment we walked in. The atmosphere and the ambience is super cool, and it's decorated like a restaurant on the Amalfi coast. They have a very cute and big backyard decorated with bright pillows, lemon plants and hanging lights. It felt we were in Capri. The food was fresh, clean and delicate. Loved our appetizer and our pasta with seafood. Everything was perfect. We will definitely come back! Bravi ragazzi e grazie Bartolomeo!
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
super cute space, friendly service and decent food! we had the burrata to start and then the spaghetti alle vongole, which was a generous portion of pasta but not enough clam :(. There was a heavy dose of EVOO but lacking clam flavor. I also had a taste of the Scialatielli allo Scoglio (seafood in tomato sauce) which was much better. Definitely reco that one! both pasta dishes were cooked perfect al dente. For dessert we had the profiteroles which was a surprise. I'm used to seeing little puffs of pastry filled with cream, but these were in a jar covered with cream and chocolate mousse. sort of like an inside out profiterole? Not complaining because who can say no to more cream and chocolate!
google avatar

Tracy S.

Yelp
A cute and decorative Italian place that opened up in the neighborhood. The pricing isn't bad and the service is great! Really enjoyed the bruschetta and their dessert menu had some tasty options. They ran out of the chocolate cake when I went but everything else on it sounded good but wasn't what I was craving that night. I enjoyed the pasta dish I got and they have other non pasta options too. I would come back again and try some other menu options.

Amber D.

Yelp
The food, service, and decor were stellar! I'd recommend the fries (cacio e pepe), shrimp salad, and meatballs. our wine recommendation was also spot-on. We will be back!!
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Very nice Italian neighborhood restaurant. Recommend the eggplant parm appetizer, fresh seafood scialatielli, and homemade tiramisu dessert. Thanks to Lorenzo for the wine recommendation and great service.

Lian W.

Yelp
A beautiful restaurant that takes you away to Capri while you dine here. The island decor and colors makes you feel light and happy. Service was 5 stars. Our waiter, on a soccer scholarship from Italy, with old school etiquette was refreshing and appreciated. As for the food, it was too salty even after requesting less salt. Otherwise, everything was cooked to almost perfection. We ordered fried calamari-delish Mussels- fresh Spaghetti alle Vongole- perfect pasta, clams were fresh but too salty Scialatielli allo Scoglio- fresh seafood, again overly salted. Polipetti Affogati -thought we'd give baby octopus a try, should have known not to order anything with the word "baby" in it, lol.

Yelp
Amma's birthday. Did my Yelp research and came across this spot on an IG-friendly stretch of Smith Street. (otherwise known as "Smith Street"). Did a late Saturday lunch to avoid a crowd and service was great. We're a picky, mostly vegetarian group of 6 but had no problem enjoying their options. Simona addressed our "Is it a veg stock?" and "Any pistachios?" questions candidly and dutifully. (for perspective: I eat everything and have no allergies). It was a keto cheat day for me and my sister and I enjoyed the very rich, cheesy, lemony, and sweet limoncello ravioli (borderline dessert profile). Her wife loved the mushroom risotto. Rigatoni was good and perfectly al dente. Burrata and other apps came out quickly and tasted great. Simona had them send out a "custom" plate of mini cannolis for all 6 of us and even sang Happy Birthday - which, in my view, is really stupid and embarrassing but in this instance was undoubtedly a lovely gesture (and there weren't a bunch of peeps around us to weird out and ignore). Handled my 7yo niece well with her (mostly, *my*) french fries and coloring book. Tight-knit mgmt & front/back of house. Place lives up to its namesake coastal Italian vibe (I picked it in part to remind my parents of their trip to Capri many years ago). Good date spot. And if you somehow still strike out, she'll at least go home with some decent selfies for her next date whom she'll expect to be way better than you but will ultimately be disappointed by as just more of the same. *Backyard patio is under renovation as of 5/6/23 so if you want that, check with them. But they have a proper frontyard patio, too.

Yelp
Fantastic place!.. Came here with some colleagues or dinner... Cured meat and cheese appetizer was amazing... Would definitely repeat!..

Marisel B.

Yelp
First visit to Mama Capri. All of our dishes were delicious and the service was excellent. Highly recommend. The Zucchini side dish was out of this world!
google avatar

Anjali K.

Yelp
I cleaned my plate! Several vegetarian and vegan options. Absolutely delightful decor and atmosphere, and wonderfully kind and attentive service.

Anthony R.

Yelp
Absolutely stunning restaurant the moment you look in from the outside, you step inside and feel as though you took a trip to the amalfi coast! Went on more than one occasion and have always received nice service from the staff. The waitresses also helped us choose what wine went best with our meal and told us a little bit about the background of "Mama Capri" The food was so spot on and authentic that we practically licked our plates clean, and speaking of plates, they are beautiful and we're imported directly from Italy! Finally an authentic Italian restaurant on smith street, can't wait to go back. All my experiences here have been nothing but great. I cannot recommend this place enough!!
google avatar

Zach W.

Yelp
I just got back from a two week trip in Italy and Mama Capri is just as good as any meal I had there. We got the pesto pasta and the calamari - both super fresh, the pasta was perfectly al dente, the sauce creamy, the calamari fresh - really can't recommend it highly enough. Not sure why this place isn't more popular - it rules! Will be back!
google avatar

Lee W.

Yelp
We've walked by this restaurant for a few months, but tried it on a Friday night. It was so good! Delicious pistachio salad and lemon and burrata ravioli and a glass of Italian white wine. And nice Italian waiter -- Lorenzo.
google avatar

Danielle B.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Saturday night, we were seated in the backyard which was cute. Our server was charming and service was attentive. We tried the fritto misto, which was a generous sized portion and very tasty and crispy. Unfortunately my spaghetti alla vongole was just ok, a little lacking in flavor and clams, with over cooked pasta. My husband's scialatielli allo scoglio was similarly bland. Everyone was nice though!
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
Pasta and wine were both very tasty (I got the octopus ragu and my boyfriend got the chicken fillet), and loved eating in the parklet on a lovely evening outside. Would definitely come back next time I'm in Brooklyn!
google avatar

Alex T.

Yelp
Great salads, excellent handmade pasta. Perfectly done octopus with tender interiors and just the right amount of crisp on the edges. A gem in the neighborhood
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in here recently after seeing a sign for $4 beers. But it's not a dive bar, it's actually a quite trendy Italian restaurant that happens to have a lovely bar to sit at. So, I ordered a Peroni and a salad (wasn't that hungry, came for the beer - but I wish I was! Menu looked great.) Once I ordered the salad, some nice warm bread came out which was a pleasant surprise. My husband and I chatted with the bartender and learned the outdoor patio will be open in the Spring - sweet! Looking forward to coming back & exploring the menu!

Quentin P.

Yelp
New neighborhood favorite! The food was absolutely delicious - I ordered the Mama Capri risotto and I HIGHLY recommend the Tartufo al Limoncello for dessert. Rocco was our waiter and he was so helpful and made our experience even better.

Solaiman F.

Yelp
Dined here several weeks ago. Long wait times for quite bland , small portions of depressing Italian food. In addition it's quite overpriced. In this neighborhood this is by far the worse Italian food, a couple blocks in each direction you can find significantly better Italian restaurants. Don't be fooled by the design/ aesthetics of the place!
google avatar

Pete S.

Yelp
My wife and I hosted our birthday at Mama Capri's lovely back patio, and the team executed flawlessly. They were very accommodating throughout our planning, and then during the party, service was excellent. Everyone enjoyed the appetizers (burrata, fritto misto, parmigiana), and I'm a big fan of their aperol spritz. Dinner was fantastic, including seafood pasta and NY strip steak. Wine was good and reasonably priced. We really appreciated the thoughtful service and a fun environment - will be back soon!
google avatar

Samuel C.

Yelp
My wife and I have been trying out the restaurants up Smith Street in order and we were really looking forward to Mama Capri because it looked so inviting. We were not disappointed. Great service, fantastic food, and a lovely ambience. Looking forward to coming back soon
google avatar

Yelp
Rarely do my husband and I fall in love with a restaurant in new york where we try to make an effort to visit at least twice a month. Their pasta is amazing and their appetizers are so fresh. Their seafood pasta is divine. We often buy a wine bottle to bring in because they don't have a liquor license yet. Their service is also great. I think their popularity is growing every week because every time I go, it's busier than the week before.
google avatar

Bathroom Connoisseur M.

Yelp
Bathroom 4, Food 5, Average 4.5 Bathroom was pretty nice. It's very open and the color is nice as well. Feels like a home bathroom mixed with a public bathroom. The only con is that I can only find one bathroom. I don't know if there is more in the back cause I didn't check but it seemed like there was only one which is bad for the "wait". Food was good, pasta was cooked perfectly and the servings were good. I don't know what the poster two posts below is saying. The coffee and dessert were also primo. Had bolognese pasta, mussels, mozzarella, wine, tiramisu, and espresso.
google avatar

Benjamin J.

Yelp
Our order was off (burrata). We have had this dish, which is imported from Italy, in many authentic Italian restaurants. We also lived in Italy. We have never returned food but in this case we returned it. No big deal... Then the chef came out to make it a much bigger deal than it is. He argued with us, telling us we are "wrong" and that it's imported from Italy and "impossible" that it takes off since it's not yet expired. We said no problem but there are many ways for dairy imported from Italy to go bad. He made it a much bigger deal than it needed to be. They continue to argue. No discount, no humility, just the customer is "wrong." The rest of the food was ok (nothing amazing) and we waited over 20 minutes to get the bill. They tried to charge us for the dish we returned. No humility at all. The customer is wrong. The customer is arrogant. I wouldn't come back.

Yelp
Have been to Mama Capris twice now - once for dinner and once for lunch. Excellent excellent food, great authentic Italian addition to the neighborhood. The owners seem lovely, though service can be a bit slow at times. Read some other reviews about small portions and I really didn't find that to be an issue at all. I did notice the portions got a bit bigger between my two visits (I didn't think that portions were an issue in my first trip, if anything it felt more authentic to Italian portions in Naples vs massive American portions...) Anyway, highly recommend!!
