Mama Chow

This was our first visit to Mama Chow in Southport and we plan on returning regularly for this Asian inspired hawker menu, cozy and welcoming atmosphere, and fresh and esthetically pleasing and delicious dishes. We started off with the Korean fried chicken boa and the Vietnamese crispy roll. The Korean chicken was crunchy moist and flavorful. The crispy rolls filled with pork were very tasty, with the crispy outside tasting similar to tempura coating. The dipping sauce was a tad sweet and the perfect accompaniment. We shared a grilled Pho, adding in bok choy meatballs, and egg. Wow! Such a beautiful presentation of all the dishes, and the Pho was plentiful and nourishing. We loved the freshness and all the flavors. Service was fantastic and promt, and the entire place was clean and organized, including the restrooms. There is a parking lot with ample parking spots adjacent to the building, with a few spaces in front on the street side. ...1 week later I came back to try the hot oil dumplings and they were excellent, with a tender flavorful inside, with crispy shallots to add a textural element with hot chili oil and fresh cilantro. This is a generous portion which filled me up ( I was originally going to order 2!) The chili oil is hot, but not so hot and I wanted to drink what was left! Great app for sharing The homemade limeade was so nice, no too sweet or tart, perfectfully balanced. It all hit the spot. The place was packed soon after I arrived at 4:30pm on a Sunday.

This is the best place around for noodles, food is consistently fantastic and the service is always great. The owner is so nice and all serving staff is wonderful. They never skimp on portions and pricing is very reasonable. KFC bao, hot oil dumplings, and both ramens are our go to’s. Lychee mojito and limeade are favorites for drinks!

Mama Chow is a must-try spot in Connecticut! The pork belly bun was absolutely delicious—tender, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The ribs were just as impressive—fall-off-the-bone and packed with bold flavor. Friendly service, cozy atmosphere, and food that hits the spot.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at this exceptional restaurant, and I must say, the food totally blew me away. I’m sad that it’s so far from where I live. The eggplant, Vietnamese crispy roll, and hot oil dumplings were particularly impressive. The rolls boasted a perfect balance of crispy texture and flavorful pork filling, while the dumplings were generously stuffed and perfectly sized. The adjustment of the hot sauce to suit local tastes was executed skillfully, without compromising too much of the authentic flavors. The deep-fried eggplant retained its vibrant purple color and shape, with flavors and fragrance concentrated beautifully on the surface. However, the highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the Pho Tai. Served with tender beef cut exactly as it is in Hanoi, Vietnam, it showcased the chef's dedication to authenticity and quality ingredients. The Char Kway Teow demonstrated exceptional wok skills, with evenly distributed sauces coating the wide noodles, delivering an authentic flavor experience. It's evident that the chefs take great pride in their craft. Not only was the food outstanding, but the service was also impeccable. The staff were welcoming and attentive, ensuring a memorable dining experience from start to finish.

Possibly one of the easiest 5 star ratings I've ever given out, Mama Chow's has delicious food. The inside is nice, and service is great. But the food, man, the food. We ordered the KFC bao buns - very tasty right off the bat. Then we got an order of the KLM, a spicy miso ramen and the pho king. All were excellent. The KLM noodles were sweet and the pork tender and delicious. The spicy miso ramen was excellent - perfectly spicy while still delivering flavor. And the short rib in the pho king was excellent. Can't believe I haven't been here before and now I can't wait to come back.

We have been coming for several years and find their food and service excellent and incredibly consistent. Mama and daughter May run a really tight ship. Everything on their menu is great. I highly recommend it.

AMAZING!! The hot chili oil dumplings were so juicy and delicious. The grilled beef pho was sensational, and the KLM was just as good. The service was great--everyone was super nice and really cared about what you needed. The ambiance was perfect with the twinkly lights and chill music. The bathrooms were very clean and the soap smelled great.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Mama Chow. The most unique Asian restaurant I've found in the CT area. This is a restaurant you can always count on for a delicious meal. They are kind, welcoming, and consistently dishing out wonderful food. This spot will quickly become a favorite. Their delicious broths are especially comforting on a cold winter day. Next time you're in the area and in the mood to try something different, try them out. You won't be disappointed!

Absolutely incredible food, service, and the ambience is nice as well. The food and service were the star of the show. The KFC buns and mushroom dumplings were delicious and perfect. My Pho King was delicious and memorable. Portions are super generous and prices are reasonable. Look greatly forward to my next visit! Light years better than Mecha! Great portions, great flavor! Perfect spice and friendly staff. We had an amazing lunch and do not expect the portions to be so big compared to other places and it was greatly appreciated. I've already told coworkers about this place because we had such a wonderful experience! Thank you to the friendly and hospitable staff as well.

5 stars - this place is SO GOOD! A hidden gem with a variety of hawker stand style dishes. As an Asian person I find it an ominous sign when an Asian restaurant doesn't have many Asian customers -- not the case at Mama Chow! I was pleased to see customers were plentiful (both dine-in and takeout) and the majority were Asian. We tried: KFC Bao, crispy Vietnamese rolls, shrimp butter yolk, laska and the bubble waffle for dessert. KFC Bao - two big baos with a generous portion of crispy fried chicken. Really delicious! Crispy Vietnamese Rolls - Must try. Super crispy (interesting batter) and hot with a wonderful nuoc mam dipping sauce. Shrimp butter yolk - not my favorite but my wife loved it. I admittedly am not the biggest shrimp butter. Laska - Wow, incredibly hot, sour and flavorful. Giant portion loaded with chicken and roasted pork. Jammy egg was perfect. Bubble waffle with black sesame ice cream - I thought the waffle was a tad overbaked but the ice cream was perfect. Service was friendly and fast; we spoke to the owner who is from Malaysia so you know the food is authentic. The food is very affordable and portions are HUGE. We had to take home most of the laska, a KFC bao and a roll! We will definitely be back!

I really like this place! The owner is Singaporean. They have excellent laksa here. It was so cheap and delicious. We couldn't believe how much meat was in our noodles! The place is cozy and clean. The staff here were super nice. I can't wait to come back and try more.

Meh. I really wanted to like this place. But to me it's no different than Mecha in Fairfield, net: suburban version of ethnic food for upper middle class.... The Pho had the most flavorless broth I've ever had....and I thought Mecha was watered down. Bao was ok, same as Mecha. A shame as Fairfield needs a good Pho joint. Pho Na Tra USED to be better than either..but it's under new ownership it seems. And it was downright terrible the last time we were there. If you're venturing to Milford, I recommend Noodle House, it's an order of magnitude better than anything in town....

Good Lawt!! Small and cozy palace with BIG flavors made with love. The owners were there and were So incredibly welcoming and sweet. Best Vietnamese coffee. The Laksa was out of this world. I'd drink a tub of the broth if I could. Pho was on point and last but not least the spicy garlic cucumbers.. so simple.. so perfect. Great pallet cleanser. New go to !

This review would be worth it for the Laksa alone. We had heard of this place a while and finally stopped by. Staff was very sweet to our small kids and food was as good as we had been told. Great place.

Absolutely unbelievably amazing that it is pretty ridiculous that I can rate a place this goooood. Zillion stars. Food was just one reason. The simple menu is way off the charts in quality and taste- tried almost everything since we had a large group Family-run business with a sophisticated and brilliant knack for good food and the dishes come out blazing hot. That is fresh - no wait time. That is superb timing and execution. This is almost the calibre of a Michellin restaurant. This review will not do it justice. They take no reservations and the workers were nonstop working. The kitchen did not have a break all night - tables were just turning over. Goodness!! This is the major reason why the location is receiving a bajillion stars from me. Everyone raved about the good food. For me the showstopper was the pandan panna cotta - oh my louise! The tip for us was 30% - so so so well deserved, and we decided at the end to add additional, end of night. Service is undeniably above and beyond - they poured water nonstop and was able to keep asking the customers to check up on them. These steps in caring wholeheartedly for customers may not be even taught at the finest hospitality training school. The authentic touch with their customer service comes with genuine character and that was really felt throughout- partially as a family-run operation but the staff/owners also carried the night with cordial ambiance. They took their time with the tables to offer recommendations and showed no signs of frustration. (very hard at times when a restaurant is sooo busy!) Kudos to small businesses. Good luck! Was passing thru Fairfield and was so happy that Yelp led me to Mama Chow! Authentic south East Asian comfort food. We had: Hot oil dumplings (ah-mazing, not crazy spicy but it does have the most amazing sauce that we slathered onto the dumplings) Crispy spring rolls: super crispy, filling, wrap it in the lettuce Pork belly bao buns: full of flavor from the spicy(ish) hoisin sauce, pork belly was tender and flavorful. Pork with sticky rice: yum, authentic sticky rice in banana leaf Pork ribs: prob the least flavorful but still super tasty. Chicken ramen: rich broth, chewy noodles. I would have tried more of the spicy foods but my kids don't love spice. Regardless, everything was legit and delicious.

This is such a fantastic small restaurant with a great menu of absolutely delicious and fresh food. The hot oil dumplings, pho and laksa dishes are incredibly tasty and varied and freshly made to order. The staff is so kind and welcoming. Nice atmosphere and every menu item delivers.

I visited Mama Chow (No. 8) as part of my tour of CT Yelp's Top 25 Places to Eat. Mama Chow is a cozy, modern and casual Asian Fusion spot serving ramen, other soups, small plates, noodle dishes, etc. Service was very friendly. I was impressed with the two dishes I tried. The mushroom dumplings in creamy miso sauce were savory and delicious. They were topped with greens for contrasting color, texture and flavor. I recommend this dish. I also ordered the CKT (aka Char Kway Teow). It was more or less a stir fry of things such as sweet Chinese sausage, fish cakes, bean sprouts, egg, choy sum (a leafy vegetable that reminded a bit of mustard greens) and short and wide noodles, served in a savory glaze. The dish, which came out steaming hot, was delicious and such fantastic comfort food. If I lived in the area, I would order it regularly after sampling the rest of the menu. Definitely check out Mama Chow. Five Stars

Big flavor food, great technique, fair prices and friendly staff. The ambiance is nothing fancy. It's always crowded, but the food is delicious. Real deal!

So I finally made the trip here with LRoth over the summer. It's a little tricky to get to if you're on the opposite side of the road, since you can't easily make a left. The place is small but cozy. The pork belly baos were delicious. Pork belly was a huge chunk. It's not as cooked down for my taste but still tasty. The shrimp butter yolk was okay. The butter yolk didn't really come through. Viet crispy rolls were pretty good. Nothing stood out but still good. The KFC bao was good but not as good as the pork. Nasi goreng was flavorful. The CKT was my jam though. Savory with just a touch of sweet. This is a place I'd recommend trying.

My husband and I have been to Mama Chow almost weekly for a year, so we tried almost the entire menu. Appetizers: Shrimp butter yolk - shrimp with a sauce made out of yolk and butter. Sounds strange, but it's the most delicious rich yet delicate sauce. I've never had anything like it. The shrimp are large and always perfectly cooked! Spicy garlic cucumbers - refreshing, slightly spicy, with a crunch from the cucumbers. This dish is truly better when dining in, because the cucumbers get slightly soggy and lose their crunch for takeout. Seasoned Edamame - this is my husband's favorite. The fried herbs, little onions, and garlic really make a simple food like edamame exciting. Tamarind wings - These wings are fried to order and coated in a sweet and sour tamarind glaze. When you order these to-go, the glaze is on the side, so I recommend dining in for these. Hot oil dumplings - soft dumplings with a generous amount of filling. They're coated in chili oil and garnished with fried shallots, which is an amazing textural contrast to the dumplings. If you can handle a little bit of heat get these! King do pork ribs - if the wings sound good, try this, too. Despite being fried, somehow they don't feel heavy, but the portion is big enough to be an entree. Pork belly bao - my favorite pork belly bao is at Ippudo in NYC, but these are the closest that I've tried. Rich pork belly in a pillowy soft steamed bun. You can't really go wrong here. Mushroom dumplings - if you can't handle spice then choose the mushroom dumplings over the hot oil dumplings. The sauce on these is very delicate and creamy. I prefer the hot oil dumplings, but my family prefers these. Crispy Vietnamese rolls - there are so many good dishes at Mama Chow, so I tend to skip this one. My husband loves these - he says they're really well made traditional Vietnamese rolls. It's mostly about the crispy texture and freshness from the leaves enveloped in the sweet and sour dipping sauce. KFC bao - the fried chicken is super crispy. The textural experience is on another level with this one. So if you're in the mood for something crispy this is for you! Steamed string beans / steamed eggplant specials: I prefer the string beans to the eggplant, but that's only because I prefer string beans to eggplant, in general. These two dishes are really simple and don't really stand out among all of the flavor bombs listed above. I'm really glad it's an option, though, because there are days when I just want some light healthy veggies. Kale salad - we ordered the kale salad only once. It was definitely unique to have fresh and fried kale mixed in one salad. Grilled pork w/ sticky rice - the reason this dish doesn't get much love from us is because we get the KLM most times and I rarely want grilled pork and then KLM Mala beef/tofu - my husband ordered the tofu version once. I don't remember what it tasted like, which is why it's at the bottom. Entrees: Klm - if it's your first time at Mama Chow, do yourself a favor and order this flavor bomb. You get the soft noodles with the flavor-packed and tender pork, wontons, some healthy bok choy, and some pickled serranos all in the most delicious sauce I've ever ever had. This is the dish that keeps us coming back. Pho - I prefer the Pho Grill. The grilled and seasoned meat is delicious on its own, but it also adds more flavor to the broth. Yaki udon supreme - mild, but impactful flavor. Mildly spicy with perfectly cooked seafood. If you're full this is a lighter option. Laksa - the three dishes above are our favorites, so that's what we get Ramen - you can get ramen anywhere. What you can't get anywhere is the KLM. You can get pho in a lot of places, too, but it's amazing here. There was a point in time when I would get pho everyday for lunch in Manhattan's Chinatown; I prefer this one. CKT and Nasi Goreng weren't our favorite. They have specials, but you may need to call and reserve before they sell out. Keep up with the specials on Facebook and Instagram. Dessert: Can't go wrong with bubble waffles or ice cream. Drinks: Freshly squeezed and tart limeade or unsweetened tea help cut through the richness of the food. They serve alcohol, but I don't drink. The menu is similar to Mecha. However, I prefer Mama Chow in every way, except for the ramen. I also prefer the service. Coming to Mama Chow is like being invited into the Chow home. Everyone is so friendly! Papa Chow even comes out of the kitchen to chat when it's not too busy. Everyone works so hard and their passion is crystal clear. They don't take reservations, but we've never had to wait. Parking is plentiful. They're kid friendly - we come with our baby.

I love this place and the food prices are very fair. Only place around that serves laksa and chicken rice, both Singapore specialties.

Mama Chow is one of our most favorite places to go eat in the area. I absolutely love the kind people that work there, the service is top notch. The place itself is small, and right off the main road, so easy to get to. But the star is of course the food! We have tried spicy garlic cucumbers, KFC Bao, Crispy Vietnamese Rolls (!!!), Hot oil dumplings, and my favorite dish there - Laksa - chicken, roasted pork, bean sprout, shoyu egg, tofu puff, crispy bean curd in a coconut curry based broth! Mouth watering just writing about it. I can't wait to go back!

Mama Chow offers Malaysian style hawker fare and a smattering of pan-Asian dishes such as dumplings, ramen and pho. We love Mama Chow's weekly specials (details are on their Instagram and Facebook pages). These specials run the gamut from perennial favorites such as Beef Rendang, Chicken Rice, Nasi Lemak to exotic dishes such as Assam Laksa and Oxtail Soup. This myriad assortment is welcomed by its patrons, especially the Malaysian diaspora. It also showcases the versatility of Kim (owner and head chef). Here's what we have sampled: Beef Rendang - Delicious fork tender beef chunks stewed in aromatic rendang gravy, served alongside cucumber pickles and coconut rice that had been fragranced with pandan leaves. Chicken Rice - Tasty poached chicken with rice cooked in the chicken stock. Rice was very flavourful, the crisp shallot toppings provided a nice crunch. This dish came with servings of sliced cucumbers, a handful of cilantro, a rich chicken broth and the traditional ginger and chilli dips. Scrumptiously good, everything from the poached chicken to the dips were prepared from scratch. Prawn Mee - This prawn noodle soup is reminiscent of those served in Kuala Lumpur. A combo of egg noodles and thin rice vermicelli is served in a flavoursome, slightly spicy pork and prawn broth. Toppings include fish balls, shrimps, blanched bok choy, pork slices and half a poached egg. Assam Laksa, a rice noodle soup in a spicy piquant fish broth popular in Penang. Kudos to Mama Chow for featuring it as part of their specials as this dish is rarely offered outside of Malaysia. It is as authentic as you can get back home and the portions are generous. Mama Chow's Pandan Cotta, a delectable milky jelly dessert flavoured with pandan leaves and served drizzled with brown sugar syrup, is a must try. One could also savour Malaysian durian, the highly sought-after Musang King variety, here as well. Interesting menu options make Mama Chow a destination for Malaysian/ Asian food.

I highly recommend this place. It's a gem of a restaurant with very good food. Their food is pan Asian but focuses on Singaporean street food. They echo this in their decor with string lights and a mural of a street food scene (taken in Taiwan). I had the Kon Lo Mee which I highly recommend. Also the hot oil dumplings are not to be missed. So tasty!!!! Also they have usb outlets near the window for people to charge their phones which is a really nice touch.

I have been here twice. The place is small but the staff is warm and welcoming. Their noodles are delicious. I have tried their special Ha Mee and it's a rich egg noodle soup in shrimp broth. This was my favorite dish so far. The servings are hearty and the pho is also very good.

This story is long despite it was a brief encounter. I drive past this place weekly and finally had a chance to eat here. I go in and I am greeted with a smile seated by a window (nice). It is well lit because of the large windows. The waitress comes to me and asks would I like something else to drink besides water (excellent way of asking).no smile though. I order the Sapporo beer and the pork ribs appetizer and the waitress asks for my meal order. "Let's start with this and I'll decide later", I said. As I wait the same waitress plops down the napkins as she passes by. Another waitress brings the appetizer (no smile). I look around and my original waitress cannot be seen, I don't know where she is. I eat one rib then another looking around to see if my beer is coming in between me eating each rib (4 total). No beer appears . BTW the ribs tasted OK but were chewy and not tender. Finally, the waitress appears and asks if I want anything else. I asked for the check and then it dawns on her, I didn't get my beer. Me: "No, I do not want it now." "Are you one of the owners?" Her: "No, part of the family. Is there anything I can do to make this better?" Me: "I'd like the ribs on the house and I'd like to leave" Her: "OK OK whatever you'd like" I get up and leave. I ate at home.

We are averaging more like three times a week now. The business is starting to do really well. Chow and Kim really deserve it. They have worked very hard for this. Latest delicacy is a miso Chilean sea bass with bak choy. It is that too sweet miso sauce you get at Nobu, but much lighter and complementary with the flavor of the fish.

We ordered takeout for our first try. It didn't disappoint. We got the hot oil dumplings, the pork belly bao, and the green beans. They were all solid. I'm sad that we live so far away (we were at a friend's house), but I'll definitely make an effort to come back. Lots of menu items I'd like to try.

Best pho in Connecticut! Mushroom dumplings are to die for omg . There special menu on Saturday are the bomb. Saturdays are busy so go early .

Laksa was amazing. It is the best I've had. I only wish I live closer. The coconut and the spice in the soup was very well balanced. Unlike most noodle places, this bowl was filled with meats. My favorite was the large fried tofu. It soaked up the broth wonderfully. I would have to take an order of Laksa to go if I ever want to try another dish. The cucumber appetizer was delicious as well. The place reminds me of food in Asia, where everything is made fresh to order.

Amazing. AmAAAAAAAAAzing. Every dish is delightful. Service is incredible, it's a family restaurant, and the people are genuine and kind. Lovely ambiance. This is my family's favorite restaurant. Every time we go here I have the urge to write a positive yelp review, and this time I did it. I sincerely recommend this to anyone looking for an all around perfect experience.

While you would think that Ramen places are all alike, Mama Chows is definitely a cut above all of them in this area. Seafood, meat, and vegetarian dishes are lovingly prepared and provide a hearty fare for any appetite. Something as simple as herbed, edamame or something as complex as there spicy miso ramen are filled with surprising ingredients that have opportunities to add on even more delectable choices. The service is overlooked by mama Chow herself, who takes it all very personally, and will do just about anything to ensure that your meal is exactly what you'd like. The street food ambience with metal chairs and wooden tables,is highly appropriate. Good for takeout, or to eat in, it's well worth the trip to find Mama Chows in Westport.

So delicious! We loved everything we ordered. We got the KFC bao and pork belly bao, hot oil dumplings and mushroom dumplings as appetizers. For entrees, I had the K.L.M. (Brothless, bbq roasted pork, pork wontons, baby bok choy, pickled Serrano chilli), and my husband had the Spicy Miso ramen. The server originally warned us against ordering so much food for two people... but we finished everything and were pleasantly full. (Probably could have ordered 2 appetizers and 2 entrees, but we were so excited to try everything.) The service was fast and friendly, the food was soooo good. No complaints at all! Wish we lived closer so we could try more things!! 10/10 highly recommend!

I can't believe I wrote my first review of Mama Chows 5 years ago and it is still my favorite restaurant. My family and I eat here weekly. The specials are always delicious. The Pho is so warm and comforting. The laksa is rich and satisfying. And it just isn't summer for me without the summer noodle salad!

Unbelievable! It really felt like we were in the city for the night. The ambiance was very authentic. The food was the best ramen we'd had in the US. Broth was tasty, the pork bao was incredible and the service was perfect. 10/10 can't wait to be back.

WOW!! This place is definitely a hidden gem for me. I only started hearing about it as of lately and it's been open for a few years now! It's hard to find a good Malaysian type cuisine restaurant in CT and this place was it! We started with a lychee mojito which was delicious and shared some appetizers - hot oil dumplings, pork bao, grilled pork with sticky rice, salted duck egg shrimp, and shared an entree of Kon Loh Mee. Everything was amazing!!! No complaints. I loved how my table had a little hook for purses also and the bathroom smelled nice and clean, it was the little details for me. Owners were so friendly!! Definitely coming back to try other dishes.

Very cosy restaurant it will be nice to dine in, however I was getting takeout this time. They have open kitchen where you can see a clean kitchen, super friendly young lady May was taking my order. It is so nice to know they are from Malaysia and they speak Cantonese like I do. My family all give 5 stars for the food because everything taste great after 20mins driving home. Vietnamese spring roll - they use rice paper, has pork, glass noodkes and wood ears in it, authentic enough and taste so good. It comes with 4 in an order. (It will be nice if they add Cilantro on the side with the lettuce) Seafood Laksa Soup - very rich coconut curry not Spicy (you can have the homemade special hot sauce on the side) it has Shrimp, squid, scallops and clam all fresh ingredients. Lucky We ordered two! Oh... There's tofu too which it was gone before i can taste it , until next time Pho King - few big chunk of beef ribs, chew noodles and excellent broth! You have to make sure adding lime and basil into the soup! I thinking it's best you can find in the area. Kon Loh Mee (roast pork wonton lo mein) that's homemade roast pork (cha siu) juicy and yummy, i didn't get to try the wonton because it was gone before i could , noodles taste great it's sweeter than C. k. l. C. k. l - the noodles is authentic, I'm so happy it's Chinese sausage (I always have beef one) so this is better choice for me. Stir fry noodles that's not oily at all! Better than those i get in Queens. Our asian stomachs are all satisfied in CT, just happy they open up business in CT where we don't have access to authentic Asian food. May told me to follow their Instagram story (not the post) for their weekly specials. My family has been waiting to try the Hainan Chicken.

My wife and I ordered dinner online from Mama Chow's last night, for the first time in a few years. It will be the last time. I started to worry when my car developed a strong fishy smell (I ordered the broth-less seafood noodle dish.) When I got home and started to unpack the food, my wife came into the kitchen asking what the awful fishy smell was and asked me to spray Lysol. I took one bite of the dish, and then straight to the garbage. Same with the spring rolls. We gave the pork and noodle dish two bites. The string beans and black sesame ice cream were okay. But everything else had to be thrown right out. At least I get to warn others.

the hot oil dumplings here are as good as advertised and more! the condiments and toppings are so savory and delicious - the chili oil, scallions, vinegar, coriander and cilantro came together so well! the dumplings themselves were really juicy and meaty. note that they're pan-fried and not steamed/boiled. the laksa broth was super tasty and fragrant and they do give you a good portion of meat. however, the chicken in the laksa was overlooked to the point of having the texture of dry cardboard, which was super disappointing. we couldn't eat any of it, just chewing it was like trying to eat old shoelaces. service was attentive, water was frequently refilled. the ambience of the place was cute and casual. will be coming back but for the seafood laksa next time around

We've been eyeing Mama Chow for so long as it's one of the few places offering Malaysian and Singaporean food. From a trip back in 2014, I've awaited the day I get to have Laksa or Koh Loh Mee (which all these years I never realized it's literally 干捞面 in Cantonese) in Malaysian/Southeast Asia style. Mama Chow brought me back to those times and glad we were finally able to try. The moment I walked in I knew we were in for a treat. It was February which is around Lunar new year celebration time. I heard familiar sounds of the Chinese Lunar New Year songs in Cantonese that I heard growing up. I bopped my head and the staff was able to speak in Cantonese with me. Great start! Soon, we found ourselves excited and wanting to try as much as possible. There were vegetarian options available for us to share without issue, as well as something for everyone. We had the Mala tofu which was a perfect amount of spice. I was particularly impressed by the crispy Vietnamese rolls made with rice flour instead of egg wrapping. I was obsessed and probably would've eaten a whole order myself. The star of the show was the Laksa. While it was more coconut flavored than wha my I remember 8 years ago in Malaysia, it was a welcome and delicious taste that kept me eating. Portions were great as I couldn't finish and took some home. Finally we topped everything off with dessert. I was pleasantly surprised that the bubble waffle came out and was made of Pandan. I've found little places that use pandan in their dessert and was audibly excited to see the familiar green looking batter and vanilla smell when our dessert came out. For those who don't know Pandan is fragrant leaf commonly used in Southeast Asian desserts for a vanilla like smell and very light tasting dessert. Don't be scared of the tints of green, I PROMISE it's delicious. Trust me, my fiancé was immediately texted when I learned they had not only pandan, but one of his faves: black sesame ice cream. Can't wait to bring back my family who misses southeast Asian cuisine, as well as my fiancé who is gonna go wild when he tries these dishes. I'm personally excited to try all the additional dishes. My wife & I have been here several times. The food is so delicious. I use a walker to get around. The staff is so kind, thoughtful & helpful. Some of the best menu items I have ever had. So easy to highly recommend. Best edamame we have ever had.

Haven't had Mama Chow in years and my friend and I decided to come here for lunch after plenty of locals were raving about it on an online Facebook group that was made to support local businesses. The staff here is so friendly and attentive! We got there around when it opened so we didn't have to wait for a table, but the restaurant quickly filled up! I got a lychee mojito which was delicious and I could have easily gotten another one. Like previous reviewers have said, the owner of the restaurant used to be at Mecha so several dishes are the same (the mushroom dumplings, kfc bao) but there are many more different entrees that are more Indonesian/Singaporean that you won't find anywhere else. I got the mushroom dumplings because they are my favorite - perfectly full with mushroom and Parmesan puree and the miso dressing they're served with is SO good. For my entree I got the nasi goreng which was a huge portion and full of chicken, tofu, little fried anchovies and a fried egg. It was so flavorful and filling. I would definitely want to try some of their specials they showcase on their Instagram like the beef rendang or nasi lemak.

I've gotten takeout here several times now so happy to report in. The pork belly baos and the KFC baos are delicious! Pricing seems steep until you actually see how big the pork belly baos are. The fried dumplings are bit pricey, but are definitely authentic. They taste exactly like the ones I used to eat at my mom's friends' house in Brooklyn... they let me eat as many as I wanted because I watched their kids during their mahjong tournaments. The noodles are fresh tasting and everything isn't completely over-salted so you do taste the ingredients. If you're in the area definitely stop here for a bite.

For a long time I wouldn't eat here because I don't eat pork and had the impression that the entire menu would be off-limits. My loss. There is plenty on the menu for me and the food is unique and delicious. The KFC Bao appetizer is terrific and the edamame is delicious. I go for the soups and the pho is delicious. Laksa too - and theirs is vegan (hard to find a vegan laksa). Green beans are excellent (not always on the menu). A treat every time.

5 stars, best Asian food in Fairfield county. Staff is friendly, food is great. Mushroom dumplings are amazing and the pho is top notch

Tasty fare, ready on time, far bearer than nearby run-of-the-mill Chinese takeout places. Will gladly be back.
