I have to admit - as I walked through the freshly renovated Terminal 1 for the very first time, I was more excited to check out the revamped dining options than I was to explore all of the new improvements and amenities. Not that either were horrendously awful before, but...well, they weren't exactly all that awesome either. Plus, SF being SF, I knew there was bound to be more local and unique spots than your generic sorts of chains! Although, between their proximity to my gate and the positive things I had heard about them from friends, I pretty much knew what eatery to try first once I saw Mama Go's!
Located practically at the very end of the terminal (well past all of the eateries just past security), Mama Go's isn't much to look at - literally. Quite honestly, this place might have the smallest footprint, but it's not like they need a ton of space either. Their set-up is the same as the likes of Panda Express, where you can customize your own combo meal or order by entree instead. Similar to their stature, the menu isn't very extensive, but it still has a decent variety of offerings - a half dozen appetizers, a handful of sides, and about eight different entrees, including a couple of vegan options. Also, if you are ordering a combo meal, several of the dishes do have an upcharge, which may or may not affect your picks.
-- LUMPIA SHANGHAI - Deep Fried Filipino Style Egg Rolls with Sweet & Sour Dipping Sauce...$10.99
I had (read: always have) a craving for lumpia and boy were hit the spot! While I do wish they had been hotter/crispier, each piece was decently filled with a delicious, porky filling. Best of all, I loved that they weren't super oily! As for the dipping sauce, I forgot to get some to try, but these were great without it.
-- TWO ENTREE COMBO MEAL - Chicken Adobo & Chicken Curry with Choice of Base (Garlic Rice), Choice of Side (Pork & Shrimp Siaomai), and a cup of Sibuya Soup...$18.99
I may not have been expecting much, but this was still pretty solid! The Chicken Curry was flavorful (creamy, mild spice) and I liked how the vinegar in the Adobo wasn't overpowering and that the chunks of meat were moist. As for the two sides, the Siaomai wasn't anything special, but the Sibuya soup was simple yet legitimately delicious!
With each of the things that I've tried at Mama Go's so far, what I've liked the most is how everything tasted pretty clean - nothing felt all that greasy, fatty, oily, etc. Plus, the workers here are super nice (reminded me of the Filipino aunties at a couple of the restaurants I used to frequent near my old job). The one thing that's unfortunate about this place is that, like just about any other airport eatery, their prices aren't cheap and the portion isn't huge. However, context is important - while they may be a three in the grand scheme of things, they're closer to a four for where they are. If nothing else, their lumpia makes for the perfect pre-flight snack!
THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded up. You can find better Filipino food elsewhere, but not bad for what/where they are!
