How Black Parisian Chefs Serving Soul Food Are Exploring ‘Afropean’ Cuisine | Eater

"Born from popular soul‑food brunches and film nights, this restaurant offers a highly themed cultural experience packed with African‑American memorabilia and music alongside a menu centered on fried chicken and waffles (the chicken here is more thickly breaded; the waffles slightly sweet and airy). Offerings include a cheddar‑and‑béchamel macaroni and cheese, a “Vegan & Love” plate with roasted peppers and sweet potato croquettes in green coconut curry, Jamaican jerk chicken, sides such as red beans and rice, sweet potato purée, and flash‑fried plantains with a garlicky, vinegary spicy mayo. Signature items include a large “Mama’s Club Waffle” sandwich (fried chicken, melted cheddar, red onion, cornichons, sweet‑tangy sauce) and a buttery brioche caramel pain perdu for dessert. The owners frame the place as both an entry point to soul food and an affirmation of Black culture, and it has attracted notable delivery orders from visiting artists." - Alexander Hurst

The food was excellent and the staff was patient with me since I don't speak the language and had trouble getting the menu on my phone. I had the chicken and waffles and sweet potato pie for dessert. The chicken had a little spice to it, but it wasn't too much. I don't eat spicy food... The waffle was soft and more savory than sweet, but still very good with the syrup. That sweet potato pie; delicious. It wasn't super sweet, but had a very good flavor and texture. Much different from what I'm used to in the states. The sauce and whipped cream complimented it very well. I would go back if I'm in Paris again. They had a good music selection too. I felt like I was in the 90s.

Everything was perfect! I was blown away by the quality, quantity and level of seasoning. My friends and I had reservations for 7, we were the first to arrive for their dinner service. The Mac and cheese was ‘sold out’ which we weren’t surprised based on the previous pictures of it (being sarcastic). The drinks were top notch, we all enjoyed our drinks. I ordered the rum punch which was surprisingly small but it was very strong which I liked, so the size is definitely appropriate for the strength. The chicken was hot fresh and crunchy but very juicy inside, I ordered a side of beans with rice and French fries. I’m not a rice person but this rice was extremely flavorful and delicious as was the French fries. Zero complaints, my total (I had two rum punches) came out to just 32 euro- an excellent value. The staff was very friendly and the service was fast. The place filled up quick. My friends also ordered dessert the sweet potato pie- they liked that as well but it is served hot. Overall, I highly recommend. The atmosphere is top notch, great music as well (even without the DJ at that time) we were singing, dancing in our seats and reminiscing as we heard some of her classic hip hop music that we grew up on.

The food was excellent. Really tasty and a full plate. I would highly recommend this place. I went for their brunch menu. Reservation is necessary as it's very popular.

I found out about this place on Instagram. We really enjoyed it. Very small, highly recommend making reservations. Not sure if this is all the time, but the day we went they were only taking cash, good thing I had Euros

The food was delicious, prices were ok - not too high not too low. The serving size was pretty good and I quite liked the simple, to the point menu so it didn’t take us long to select. Service was fine too! However the location can be a bit of a bummer as the alley seems a bit shady. And it was so hot inside, no ventilation - I don’t think they had any windows open. And because of that it was super noisy too because it was cramped and enclosed.

Located on a side street, it is very easy to miss this spot. Once inside, we were greeted by a very friendly lady. The atmosphere and decor is warm. They played 90s R & B. Our food came out quickly. Each entree was seasoned very, very well...not exactly soul food but taste great. The sweet potatoes, beans and rice as well as the slaw were good as well. The chicken taste good, however, it does have a thick breading. They only offer dark meat options.

I took a club waffle sandwich with chicken. I would give it 7/10 at best. The main thing missing for me was the crunchiness in the bites, and that goes for both the waffle and the chicken. For the chicken, I was really expecting a thick crust fried chicken, but it wasn't. When you put cheese on the waffle, it can affect the crunchiness, but perhaps this could be circumvented by making the waffle extra crunchy and putting the chicken and cheese between waffles right before serving. Also, at another soul food store I visited (not going to name it here), they put more icing sugar on the waffles and gave me an authentic Louisiana hot sauce. This created more contrast in the tastes and made it more interesting, but it wasn't like that in Mama Jackson. So in brief, fried chicken and waffle club sandwich at Mama Jackson wasn't bad but nothing overwhelming for me. A word about the atmosphere: in a room full of people on a hot weekday evening, please consider putting an air conditioner or at least several fans to blow some air. It was hot and humid inside and not a very pleasant experience to eat hot food.

Totally cool spot! My nephew said the chicken and waffles reminded him of chicken from South Carolina. Crispy, juicy and yummy! The Bamako was awesome! Alec provided wonderful service. Highly recommend for quality soul food!
