The Best New Restaurants in Denver Right Now, Spring 2025 | Eater Denver

"Everything’s picture perfect at this Southern counter joint, right down to the mom-and-pop ownership and the country music playing in the background. The barbecue selection’s short but sweet — pulled pork, spare rib, hot links, Saturday-only brisket — while the crunchy, juicy, peppery fried chicken may be the item to beat, especially atop a buttery, crumbly biscuit with tangy pimento cheese and sweet-and-sour pickles. Even the sides and desserts, including porky, tender collard greens and apple fritters, are textbook examples of the genre." - Ruth Tobias

OUTSTANDING BBQ…. Wow. Owner is super nice and definitely takes pride in this place. Very clean dining area. We ordered the pulled pork platter with the best baked beans I’ve ever had and to-die-for pimento Mac n cheese. Everything was 10/10. Biscuits were flaky and full of flavor. They have a ton of sauces to help yourself to. We will be back!!

Google
I grew up in the backwoods of Tennessee, & I finally found my Denver BBQ spot. Amazingly tender brisket. And hands down the best greens I’ve had in Denver - probably top 3 just under my meemaw’s & Central BBQ in Memphis. The variety of BBQ sauces was also a pleasant surprise. I don’t like being wed to just one type or flavor. And the space is perfect - reminds me of home. Just needs checkered table cloths and a roll of brown paper towels on each table. Seriously - well done. Pictured: my brisket plate with tots & greens. Not pictured: the fried green tomatoes I ordered to-go & devoured before I even got home.

Incredible BBQ! Super happy this place went into Steve’s old spot on Colfax! Jodi and Ben are making some of the best BBQ I’ve ever had. The portion sizes are massive and everything is spectacular! Biscuits, chicken sandwich, pimento Mac and cheese and pulled pork were some highlights. All the sauces are excellent, too. Great vibes and they even serve beer. A new Colfax staple!

Google
So good! The fried chicken sandwich here is one f the best in the biz. Crispy, juicy, perfectly flavored, on a scrumptious biscuit. The sides are excellent, too. I’m excited for another visit and to eat my way through the rest of the menu!

Google
The Nashville hot chicken biscuit sando is to die for. When watching her put it together the biscuit seemed normal sized and thought I might actually be able to take a real bite of this biscuit sando for a change, then she added the massive fried chicken to it. Got a few bites, but ended up sacrificing the bottom bun to be able to fit my mouth around it, sad but didn't disappoint doing. Every part of it was so good. Perfect crunchy fried chicken and the Nashville style flavor was spot on hot but not overly and tad bit of sweetness to compliment paired so well with their pickles, white sauce noticed she put on it and slaw all matched so well. It's near top on the list now all time Nashville chickens coast to coast

Google
Ah-mazing BBQ! Easily the best in Denver. The biscuit were so flaky, Mac n cheese extra cheesy, and the hush puppies had the perfect crunch on the outside while remaining soft and moist on the inside. They had Cheerwine, which was a special treat, and great local beer taps. Been following the food truck around for a while now and it’s so great to see them have their own storefront. Highly recommend if you love high quality southern food made with love.

Google
Mama Jo's Biscuits and BBQ. On Colfax. Used to be Steve's Snapping Dogs. Go now. Get the banana pudding hand pie. And the pimento mac and cheese. The collard greens and slaw were perfect. Brisket fat or lean on weekends until sold out. Lovely couple:). Ben with the beard is one of the owners. Six sauces to try. Biscuits the size of a baby's head.

Walking into this place I knew I wasn’t going to be disappointed. It smells like home. I’m originally from Alabama and grew up on bbq. Unfortunately I haven’t been happy with many of the bbq or biscuit places in Denver. None of them have hit the spot quite like Mama Jo’s. My pork sandwich with Alabama white sauce literally made me tear up. If food can taste like happy memories, this did for me. My husband loves the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich and 7yo enjoyed the pimento mac. We’ll definitely be back.

Yelp
The food was FANTASTIC! That Mama Jo's Chicken Biscuit will have you smacking your lips! Wings - Great. Sauces - Great. Collard Greens - Best in Class. Until next time!

Yelp
Review for Mama Joe's Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich If you're craving a massive, juicy Nashville hot chicken sandwich, Mama Joe's is the place to go. This thing is huge--seriously, you might need both hands and a strategy to tackle it. The chicken is perfectly crispy on the outside, with just the right amount of heat, while staying ridiculously tender and juicy inside. The pimento mac and cheese? Absolute perfection. Creamy, cheesy, and with that little Southern kick that makes you want to order an extra side just to take home. Now, if I had one tiny complaint, it's the soda cups--they're on the smaller side, and with a spicy sandwich like this, you might be making extra trips for refills. Also, the price is a bit on the higher end, but when you bite into that sandwich, you'll understand why. Overall, Mama Joe's delivers--big flavors, big portions, and one seriously memorable meal. If you're a fan of Nashville hot chicken, this one is worth every bite.

Yelp
We had lunch here recently. It was a cold day in March with temperature hovering around 30°. The patio isn't very warm. The seats are left over from Steve's snappin dogs. There also was a major noisy construction project going on right across the street. So the ambiance was not pleasant. Things we liked: banana pudding pie and fried green tomatoes were both great. Not so good: didn't care for the biscuit. Even though the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich was massive, I couldn't say I liked it very much. Tater tots were just ok. Mac and cheese ok.

Yelp
Price... spare ribs and two sides with small drink close to $30 Ribs...seemed less than fresh, a bit tough and chewy. Cole slaw...just barely average Tater tots...FABULOUS Don't sell the food truck.

Yelp
I was really excited Mama Jo's got a brick and mortar as I used to visit their truck at my job. I will say I was disappointed in the quality vs food truck experience. The chicken thigh was really dry and stringy when biting into it. Not sure if that means it was overcooked or had sat like Precooked? We ordered at front and sat in restaurant seating and it wasn't as hot and fresh as I've had from truck. The fried green tomatoes and hush puppies were hot and fresh. The sandwich was just a mess eating due to quality of meat. Overall just ok for a $16 sandwich with no side or drink. Overall meal was $60 bucks with 3 sides and a drink for lunch. Eeeek!

Yelp
I went to Mama Jo's Biscuits and BBQ on Colfax in the former Snapping Dogs place. Nice solid menu for BBQ meats + Fried chicken. Low key decor with picnic tables. You order at the counter and they call your name when it's ready. They offer 2 draft beers, 10 cans and canned wine along with soda. I got the 1/4 rack (3 ribs) with fried green tomatoes, collard greens, a large biscuit and soda. No condiments on picnic tables, so dispense any of 6 sauces & honey in small cups. I liked the Kansas City Sauce best. They have a choice of three desserts.

Jon M.

Yelp
Below average chicken sandwich on a soggy biscuit. Mac and cheese is great, but for $26 you can't get away with such a bad sandwich

Yelp
Went with my sister, and I went to mama Joe's biscuits and chicken. The customer service was very good. The food was off the hook. The greens are good and tasty. My sister's ribs looked And looking good and meaty. She got some fried green tomatoes on that plate. She said they were good but a little spicy then she's got a biscuit that biscuit was nice and thick and then we got the different kinds of salsa. We have the Carolina vinegar we got the KC. We got the gold And a bunch of other ones that I cannot remember but this pull pork sandwich that I got oh yeah big juicy with the coleslaw on it. Oh yeah, very good. Very good and I did not need to add no barbecue sauce. That's what I like in the ambience was very good. Very clean. Very neat. Awesome place to eat. I will come back here to eat and bring family or shall I say more family

Yelp
Just great food! Biscuits are amazing and nice sauces, sides and more. Just like everything on Colfax, we need to support these wonderful places. Order takeout, eat it there but give it a try!!
google avatar

Brittany B.

Yelp
This is my new favorite place in Denver! Inside is really cute, the staff is so friendly, and the food is incredible. All the sauces are unique and fantastic. Highly recommend trying!
google avatar

Corey T.

Yelp
I should have left when I saw the price on the menu but I decided to give it a chance. The food is decent but not worth the price there are plenty of other options for BBQ around Denver that have bigger portions for a better price. I got a side of smoked sausage for $8 it came with 6 slices of sausage. Save your money and go somewhere else it's not worth it.
google avatar

Yelp
This food truck was parked in front of Denver Beer Co for their birthday celebration. They were super easy to order from, and texted us when our order was ready. The ribs were phenomenal - incredibly flavorful and fall off the bone. My judge of good bbq is always how good it tastes without sauce - and it was so good. I also had a side of coleslaw that was really good. The sauce only made it better. My husband ordered the loaded tots, and said they were really good. We loved our meals from here, and are excited to explore more of the menu.

Yelp
Yummy fried chicken and delicious fresh biscuits. Dine in ambiance is ok, or you can easily do takeout. Full fried chicken- feeds a crowd. And wings...Friendly service aims to please.

Sean

Yelp
Went for wing Wednesday and the wings are delicious! I will be back for these. Nice smoked flavor and finished in a great buffalo sauce. Tasty side sauce too. Service was also super friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
10/10! My chef husband and I came for lunch today. Chef husband is important because he has notes for EVERYTHING. No notes. Just constant "mmm" sounds. Must get dessert and get the fried banana pie! Will be back!

Yelp
All made from scratch. The biscuits are made with real butter and smoked Gouda cheese. Flaky and buttery! Love the smoked meats, Cole slaw, hush puppies, sauces fried green tomatoes and desserts. Generous portions. Pay a visit!!

L W.

Yelp
Sooooo delicious!! We were really excited to see their amazing friend chicken now on the menu separately as a meal optional!! I have been waiting for anyone to male a good friend chicken and theirs is the best! Crispiest skin and jusiest chicken!! Biscuits and sides delish too!!! Don't miss - great carry out!

Cindy T.

Yelp
We were excited to check out this new location on Friday, and had a tasty dinner. The fried chicken biscuit was well seasoned and juicy. The pulled pork was solid and the mac and cheese was creamy with a nice pimento cheese. We'll be back!

Matthew C H.

Yelp
Picked up takeout from Mama Jo's on Saturday. The ribs and brisket were both so tender and juicy, best BBQ I've had in Denver. Service was also great, staff was friendly, you can tell they care. Very happy this place popped up in my neighborhood!

Vee W.

Yelp
Came on a Saturday. BRISKET DAY! And it was absolutely incredible. I'd also recommend the pimento Mac and cheese as well as the beans. Solid barbecue spot. Definitely worth you going out of your way to check it out.

Samantha D.

Yelp
The food was amazing!!! such good BBQ, they even had a vegetarian option of smoked jackfruit! The banana cream pie was out of this world tasty and the fried green tomatoes were so delicious. Can't wait to enjoy the leftover for lunch tomorrow.

Alex P.

Yelp
Pulled pork tots were amazing, as was the brisket, chicken sandwich and everything else we ordered. Service was quick, but we were also early for lunch so not a lot of folks there yet. It's a converted hot dog place, so it's a traditional BBQ joint with a counter and some indoor/outdoor seating. Nothing fancy but food is worth it for sure.

Anne T.

Yelp
GROSS. The chicken in the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich was covered in a thick, hard, very, very greasy breading. If you pull it off you will eventually get to a little bit of chicken. None of it tastes good, not even the biscuit. The coleslaw was just chopped up cabbage with no discernable dressing, and the mac and cheese was extremely salty. Denver Biscuit Company blows this place out of the water.

Ilana M.

Yelp
The brisket melted in our mouths, and sides were amazing. The pulled pork was a little dry but I arrived after it already came out. This was the best bbq we've had in Denver so far. Can't wait to come back for a sandwich.

Bryan M.

Yelp
Great food and friendly service. Perfect for a quick lunch! Had the buttermilk chicken sandwich and tater tot's and was not disappointed.

Yelp
As we near the end of comfort food season, I decided to treat myself to a biscuit with fried chicken from Mama Jo's. It was a short walk, as they were parked right in front of Novel Strand, our neighborhood brewery. I placed my order with the friendly guy up front, and was told the wait time would be about 8 minutes while they made the biscuit. I was in and out in just under that - nice! When I unboxed the food at home, I was wowed by the portion size - I think they've got an entire chicken breast on that biscuit, plus the delicious pimento and pickles. Everything was cooked/baked perfectly, and the seasoning was great. I got two full meals out of this $14 entree, and it was almost as good cold the next day. :) Highly recommended, and I'll definitely back - even when it's not so chilly outside.
google avatar

Andrew J.

Yelp
This food truck is currently found at Jagged Mountain brewery. We weren't sure what to expect as it's apparently the very first time they've gone out with the food truck. The biscuits (well I call them scones) are crumbly and are probably the best I've had in the states so far. The pickles are sweet and the Mac n Cheese is delish. It also comes with multiple sauces. I made a Mac n Cheese and pickles sandwich using the biscuit. No regrets. The service was also really nice and professional. I'd be happy ordering here again.
google avatar

Ben S.

Yelp
Amazing BBQ! Biscuits, ribs and fritters were divine. Looking out for this truck in the future.

Rebekah B.

Yelp
delicious comfort food, affordable prices, friendly folks - what more could you ask for?

Yelp
Catered Mama Jos for my niece and her friends graduation party and they were great. There were two houses with dozens of people and Mama Jos was fast and very nice. The nice thing was you would order and they would text you when your food was ready. Heck sometimes theyd bring it to you. As for the food, it was delicious. The biscuits were so amazing and the chicken was fried goodness. Beware, the serving size is huge! The Mac and cheese as a side was one of the better ones you'll find, especially from a good truck. I highly recommend Mama Jos
google avatar

Yelp
One way of creating a food truck menu is choosinh offerings that can be served quickly without a lot of prep time. A barbecue truck is ideal for this because almost everything can be prepared off site. How then does the meal take almost 50 minutes from order to delivery? This is not a product of how busy the venue is but the ability of the chef to plan a menu that the kitchen or the food truck can serve in a reasonable amount of time. I paid a shocking amount of money for a miniscule amount of meat a And a dry biscuit. Let me repeat that this biscuit was disgusting, like eating a handful of desert sand, you don't even get the salt from the ocean. So stop serving things like fried green tomatoes that have to be fried to order and choose any number of a million different sides that can be prepped off site slapped on a tray with your meat give us a reasonable amount of meat for 18 or $20, and ask us to try again until then.... Bring a sandwich to the brewery
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
Holy deliciousness! To start, this has been on my list for a long time. I love that they have multiple vegetarian options! I got the fried green tomato biscuit sandwich. It was huge!! The flavors are phenomenal on it. The biscuit was fluffy and crumbly but flaky in all the right ways. The fried chicken sandwich was massive! I got a side of Mac and cheese - super creamy and delicious. Had some nice flavors mixed in. The banana hand pie was also flaky and tasty. Seriously, this place is amazing. I am absolutely ok paying food truck prices because they're a small business and provide fast, friendly service and clearly care about the food they produce. If you see this food truck do yourself a favor and go get some Mama Jo's!
google avatar

Asia K.

Yelp
Comically large fried chicken biscuit sandwiches, perfect sweet-n-sour pickles, and a really friendly chef. They cooked for my office today, and it was an excellent treat for a rainy day. I'd buy these biscuits by the half-dozen!
google avatar

Neil B.

Yelp
Had an awesome dinner thanks to Mama Jo's! Fried Chicken sandwiches, collard greens, pimento Mac and cheese and banana hand pies ! The hand pie was heaven.
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
Catered Mama Jo's for a large multiple family graduation party. Great food...biscuits are absolutely delicious. Huge portions and fabulous flavors. Sides were sooooo good, especially loved the Mac & cheese!! Owner was easy to work with for catering options. Truck was on time, well prepared, had plenty of food- even used an app for texting when order was ready. Do not hesitate, reach out and book this food truck ASAP!!
google avatar

Alicia H.

Yelp
The gluten free biscuit with fried chicken was amazing!!!! Highly recommend it. The apple fritters were also fluffy and declious - the dipping suave for them is on point. The mac-n-cheese (not GF) was also midn blowing. Eat it all! We found this truck @ Hollidaily Beer which is also only gluten free.
google avatar

Charles H.

Yelp
I have eaten at a lot of food trucks over the years, and this is HANDS DOWN the best I have EVER had! I chose the BBQ plate, with Mac and cheese and coleslaw. Literally every part of this plate was amazing! It's honestly hard to impress me, and I came away not just impressed but BLOWN away by the quality and depth of flavors. Wow. Well done.

Aurora W.

Yelp
I use to book the food trucks for Fiction Beer Company and have privilege of having great food trucks from our partners. I had Mama Jo's for the first time today, in fact I'm eating their food right now. The owner is 10 corporate chef, and his skill is very apparent. The food is an example of great cooking. I had the chicken and biscuit with pimento cheese and other toppings and it's the best chicken sandwich I've ever eaten. A few specifics about the sandwich - homemade flakey biscuit, sweet pickles, and a chicken breast that has to be half a chicken. The chicken was moist and flavorful. If you love love great food and bbq find Mama's. If you're a brewery looking for a great partner reach out to Mama's.
google avatar

April H.

Yelp
The prices are painfully ridiculous considering how much you get. About a cup of pulled pork and two sides for $18. The quality was ok but the portions were so small. And we didn't get a biscuit.
google avatar

Makayla K.

Yelp
My fiancé and I tried this food truck at Little Machine and it was AMAZING. We got a side of fried green tomatoes and I wish we had gotten a couple orders. They were so crispy on the outside and still moist on the inside. So good. We also got a banana pudding pie and that was equally amazing. You have to try both!! We didn't get any pictures because we were too busy enjoying the food :)
google avatar

Hawzien G.

Yelp
Delicious bbq!! The fried green tomato biscuit sandwich was my favorite. My husband loved his bbq plate with brisket. Desserts were crazzzy good. Highly recommend
google avatar

R S.

Yelp
So the chicken on a biscuit was simply amazing! Very tender, just delicious. The brisket was terrible, so overcooked as to almost be inedible. It was served in 1 inch squares and I had to cut them into tiny pieces to even be able to chew them. At $23 for the brisket plate that was not good.

Patricia S.

Yelp
10/21/22 I ordered the fried chicken biscuit sandwich. The chicken was quite good. It was a large piece with lots of crispy breading. The biscuit, however was very disappointing. It was significantly burned on the bottom and was hard and very dry. If I were rating just the biscuit I would have given it 0 stars. For an establishment that should be all about the biscuit, I would have expected a 5 star biscuit.

Tevon B.

Yelp
If you're looking for some great crispy fried chicken on a biscuit... this is the place to go! Great service and food comes out in a timely fashion. As mentioned, I had the pleasure of trying their fried chicken sandwich (make it Nashville hot btw) but would definitely be trying other things on the menu. Highly recommend!

Rudy M.

Yelp
We had them come over for a large graduation party and they did an amazing job the food was awesome! Everything was made to order and the food came out quick! They did an amazing job and the owner was very friendly. I would use them again!!

Leeds P.

Yelp
This truck provided food at a party I recently attended....it was AMAZING. Had the fried chicken sandwich on a biscuit, with macaroni & cheese as a side. The sandwich was fabulous...hot, hugh, great biscuit, nice sauce on it. The mac & cheese was out of this world....well cooked, creamy and hot. The two people working were very friendly, helped explain the various items available, and texted when the order was ready. I have recently eaten at food trucks in Wyoming and Utah.....this was the best!

Linda H.

Yelp
Wonderful biscuits..very large portions, delicious toppings. Definitely recommend. Truck came to house and served graduation party..so convenient food fresh and hot.
