Where to Find Birthday Freebies in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"This downtown Italian restaurant, with its red velvet curtains and hanging chandeliers, has some of the most tantalizing desserts available in town — things like zeppole (Italian doughnuts), cheesecake, cannoli, or tiramisu. Customers can choose from the list for a free birthday dessert, as long as they start with dinner. Mama Mia is open for takeout, delivery, and onsite dining."

This place was absolutely delicious! Was so excited to have Italian food because we don’t have any Italian at home. This place did not disappoint! We didn’t have a reservation, but they got us in right away. And the tiramisu… oh my! We ate it too fast and forgot to take a picture. Would definitely go back!!!

Google
Busy, just opened. Ordered the pappardelle bolognese 9.2/10, one of the better ones, but it is a bit more tomato forward, fried calamari was yummy and tender, pesto pasta was delicious. Some of the best Italian I’ve had in the PNW

Google
The food was delicious and magazine-worthy! Service was amazing, went during non-rush-hour. The only reason I am rating a 4 is because there are items that are online menu that are not on their real menu.

We were visiting Portland with our granddaughters ages 7 and 10. This was the perfect spot to celebrate there birthdays. Food, service and atmosphere were great. The seven year proclaimed best lasagna ever. Had the Italian donuts. Oh my they were so delicious. Our entrees were excellent. Thank you for a special night

Google
This was one of our best dining experiences while we stayed in Portland. The food quality certainly stole the show and the portions were large. The food was well balanced and very authentic! The service was kind and authentic while the atmosphere was clean and calming but the tables could use some warm accent lighting to bring life into the setting. Other cozy touches such as more plants around the open floor plan would make the space more comforting. Thank you!

Google
We arrived at opening and were seated right away. The service was kind and helpful for choosing our meals. We had the eggplant parm 10/10 & chicken parm 10/10. Would recommend.

Google
Delicious house made Italian Food. I had the lobster mac and cheese. It's not what I was expecting. It's penne noodles in a spicy cream sauce topped with bread crumbs. It was unique and delicious. My server was excellent. She greeted me promptly, did quality checks and the food came out quickly. The restaurant is very clean and has a nice ambiance

Dinner was delicious, with the exception of dessert. The shrimp scampi was out of this world deelish. In fact all pasta and sides were above and beyond . I feel that dessert fell flat. A panna cotta should be light and creamy with a subtle sweetness and served with an accompanying seasonal fruity compote. The one we had was served with a very tart, almost vinegary fig paste and a very savory layer of basil on the bottom. A bit off the mark. And the flourless chocolate torte seemed like it was over-mixed and fallen, and baked inappropriately with maybe an off balance off fat to ingredients ratio. Was very dry, bitter, and needed more sweetness..though on the contrary the accompanying sorbet was an odd choice as it was overly sweet almost syrupy sweet and extremely sour. The cheesecake was okay, though a bit grainy. The scoop of Gelato we received to replace the panna cotta was absolutely delicious! Creamy with nice chocolate balance. I just hope that it was made in house because it was the saving grace! Our server (astaria c on receipt) was very accommodating, prompt and efficient. If they could fix some technical issues with dessert, they would have a great thing moving forward. Oh, and the muzak was way too loud!

Yelp
One of my favorite spots in Portland overall. What made this a 5 star visit was not Only the food, but the service of the manager. We arrived 30 minutes early for our 7:15 reservation and they were somewhat busy, so we had to wait for our seating. At first we were seated at a round table for 4, which makes it awkward for a party of 2. I spoke with the manager and he promptly seated us in a traditional window seat which made it better for conversation. For the rest of our visit he was attentive, checked on us, and gave the type of service that makes you return over and over again. Thanks for this great experience, as sometimes you think customer service is dead in this day and age. The food as usual was amazing, and each item was fresh and prepared perfectly. Mama Mia is a standout establish in Portland's restaurant space, and make sure you give them a try. We did garlic bread, clams, Caesar salad, and 2 orders of bolognese. Don't miss the miracle. GREAT JOB WITH THE CUSTOMER SERVICE‼‼‼

Yelp
First I want to say this is one of my favorite places to eat! I have taken several friends and always enjoyed myself. Last night I took a friend telling him how great the food was and unfortunately it wasn't. I had the eggplant and it was over cooked and very little cheese. Not sure if something changed? He had the plate with different meats in it with noodles and said it was just ok. I'm sad that this wonderful place was just ok for both of us. The other weird thing was the tiny fry basket that showed up with four pieces of bread the bread was ok but the basket? We thought the basket was tacky and didn't present well at all in this upscale restaurant. I had the margarita which was absolutely perfect as usual and the bartender who took care of us was an absolute delight, she's a keeper for sure. I hope this feedback is helpful and thank you.

Yelp
This is a good Italian Restaurant, located in downtown Portland, Oregon. The food was good, but the ARRABBIATA pasta was extremely spicy; the SEAFOOD PASTA had very good flavor. The prices were very affordable, and the atmosphere of the restaurant was good.

Yelp
Wait staff were so friendly and helpful. Our son had the garlic bread and spaghetti, my husband and I snaked on the complimentary break and oil/vinegar and had drinks. Wine and mixed drinks were delicious! Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Small portions. High prices. Meh, flavor. It wasn't that nice inside either. Zero stars.

Yelp
Well, I did find the people who work there to be extremely friendly in the customer service to be exceptionable. I was a little disappointed when I ordered just a fettuccine Alfredo and mozzarella sticks and it came out to $50 with it being that amount I have a certain expectation that the food will be Outstanding so I was completely OK with it upon arriving home. I opened up my box to see a very small piece of chicken to which they charge me nine dollars for on top of that. My mozzarella sticks were not even hot all the way through it was as if it was chewing on some sort of putty. The fettuccine Alfredo in my opinion was not even better than going to an Olive Garden. I was very disappointed in my food, so I called to get a refund which I never do like ever... The people who answered my call were very helpful and were still kind and polite about my request and took off the mozzarella sticks and the chicken. Well, they may be excellent at cooking other meals this meal that I got I would not recommend. Again, I do think that their service was fantastic and the atmosphere of the place was very beautiful clean and well kept. I think that the man behind the bar was an exceptional worker who I would recommend to work at any restaurant. He's a fine man. I could give this place a star, but I will give it three to the customer service alone. I expected better from a downtown Portland restaurant.

Yelp
Another great recommendation from a friend. I hear Mama Mia has been around for a long time. If the flavor of the chicken Parmesan was the secret to success then I support it. I chose a pesto pasta to accompany the chicken Parmesan. The flavor was fantastic!

Yelp
This place is so cute. The location is great and easy parking with the parking lot right across the street. The food was delicious, and the cheesecake is so smooth.

Yelp
I was able to get a table for one during the dinner rush and was sat in the bar area. I had no issue with this as it was just myself and I didn't want to wait for more than hour for a table in the dining area. I was here to carb load for the Portland marathon. For starters I got the Brussel sprouts. They were deliciously crispy and a good portion. For my main dish, I did the bolognese. This is a good choice if you're looking for a pasta plate. You also get bread sticks at the beginning, but they weren't that good in my opinion. I was greeted immediately when I walked in at the door. They checked on me often while I ate. I was in and out in no time. A solid choice for food if you're in the area looking for a pasta dinner. Calling ahead for a reservation is highly recommended.

Claudia B.

Yelp
I had the chicken parm with garlic bread and my friend had the Fettuccine Alfredo. The bread was fresh out of the even and it was really delicious. The chicken parm and spaghetti is one of the best that I've had. My friend also really liked her Fettuccine Alfredo. We sat at the bar and the bartender was very kind and would check in on us constantly. The Ambiance was good. I felt comfortable and welcomed. If I am ever in Portland again I would definitely return.

Jim C.

Yelp
Just had a terrific dinner there. The Chicken Piccata was so tasty. The service was very friendly and efficient. Nice big dining room but not noisy. We highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Best seafood pasta I've ever had. Great menu and good wine list. Also really enjoyed the mozzarella plate. Would highly recommend.

Yelp
Visiting from Arizona, I am shocked how very few Italian restaurants in Portland serve chicken parmigiana. I wanted to find something in the Downtown Portland area that served it, and this is what I found. The chicken parmigiana was one large chicken breast and tasted very good. If you are looking for chicken parmigiana I would recommend this spot.

Yelp
Came here for Valentines and everything was great! The ambiance was on point, as there was plenty of spacing between tables with lighting felt upscale They do serve complimentary bread but we ordered garlic bread anyway and it is way fresher and better than what they give for free (who would've thought) The Pesto Linguine was good, but wish it had a stronger flavor to it - adding some salt enhanced the taste however. The vegan spicy meatballs were awesome and definitely worth getting. I wished they added this as part of the pasta considering the prices but still nice to try. Service was great, even on Valentines we got our table reservation on time and we got the attention we needed in a timely manner. Definitely recommend for date night!

Yelp
This was my first time here and I loved it! Went with a group of 9 and they had a separate section for bigger groups like us which made it much more intimate and easier to hear each other. They served complimentary focaccia which was so pillowy soft and luscious! We also got two appetizers which is rare 7/10. The main dish was also 7/10 but I really appreciated them splitting up my half order since I was sharing with another person. Best thing was the cheesecake which we got for free since it was my friend's birthday. Loved the ambiance and staff as well and can't wait to try more food!

Kelly S.

Yelp
Went on Saturday night taking friends who had never been before. My husband and I kept raving about how good the meatballs were. The whole reason we came was for the tender, light meatballs. What a huge disappointment! They were hard as rocks. We mentioned this to our waitress and she brought us out some fresh, right out of the oven meatballs. They were the exact same. HARD AS ROCKS. She mentioned the recipe had changed recently. They were awful. And to top it off, our chicken parmesan was way overcooked and extremely dry. Hopefully they can get their kitchen back to the way it used to be and the reason we returned time after time.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch. I ordered the appetizer minestrone with a meatball. Portion size was maybe 12 ounces of soup, and the meatball was 3/4 the size of a balled up fist. The soup's flavor was light with a bit of zest. From the flavor profile, I assume they use all fresh herbs rather than freeze dried ingredients. The garlic bread was garlic bread, but combined with a side of marinara, it was addictive. I sampled a dish of fettuccine with meat sauce Boglanese from another person in my party, and it was perfect. The noodles were just beyond al dente, and the flavor profile was a balance between rich and acidic. The "everything is coming up roses" cocktail was a house variation on a standard lemon drop. I tasted it, and although I'm not into sweet drinks, it was tasty. Did not try the seafood pasta, but was told it was tasty, and by the look of it, they don't skimp on the seafood. Service was prompt and friendly, not pushy at all. Ambiance was slightly dated, but not the least bit tacky, and hints that they're confident about their menu quality.

Yelp
Talk about authentic Italian food. Our server ( wish I could remember her name) was amazing and very attentive. She described each dish perfectly. We ordered the Lasagna, Shrimp Scampi dish, and spaghetti. Each dish was full with flavor and did not disappoint. We also indulged in the calamari and their Mezcal cocktail ( MUST - if you like Mezcal). I would highly recommend this spot if you're looking for good pasta, family/work group dinner.
google avatar

Perry M.

Yelp
We had the nicest server (Erica)! She was so friendly and informative. Food we hade the gnocchi, manicotti and the chicken marsala, all 3 were what I would call excellent. Home made pasta was perfect. Dessert we have the flourless chocolate cake and the tiramisu are worth the visit alone. Definitely a place I will come to the next time I am in Portland.
google avatar

Julia V.

Yelp
What a cute spot! I've always wondered since I passed by it On my way to work, great service great drinks, the food was delicious. I ordered the fried mozzarella as an appetizer and it was delicious! Their pesto gnocchi was awesome too! :)

Yelp
This used to be a 5-star stop for us: amazing and generous chicken parm, fantastic made-from-scratch ravioli on the appetizer menu, perfectly crusty/chewy baguette basket, etc. Over the years this has declined, now dramatically. The ravioli disappeared from the appetizers a while back. Last night featured maybe a 1/4 overcooked chicken breast pounded as thin as possible, bland parm breading, and even the once-delicious marinara needed salt. I never salt my food. My wife saw me reach for it, and the o ly thing she said was, "Wow. Is it that bad?" We requested baguette. I am not sure what came out. It was kind of baguette-shaped, but lacked the amazing crust and the soft, chewy perfect interior of their previous offering. I understand that many businesses have opted to leave downtown because of the various issues Portland has perpetuated over the past few years. I get that restaurants employ cost-cutting measures to shore up a mostly-empty Saturday night dining room. Business is business. Still, we will be searching elsewhere for a better place to scratch our chicken parm itch.

Peter S.

Yelp
Chicken parm, as well as pasta (garlic and olive oil) was phenominal. Great service from Danielle, complimented by nice ambiance. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Sondra E.

Yelp
The food, service and ambiance was exceptional! Our server and manager went above and beyond. Yum! I love the cannoli and pizza.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was great and the dessert was delicious. Service was quick and friendly. Relaxed atmosphere. I came because I was craving chicken Alfredo and got a large serving.
google avatar

Adrian V.

Yelp
Classy place with great Italian dishes. However, don't expect you & your party to be seated the night of without reservations. The bar is open if you don't mind sitting at the bar, & the girl that works the bar in the evening is friendly.

Yelp
Boy oh boy was the food here bad. Super confused why this place got a 3.5 stars and why people would volitionally picked to come eat here. The inside was nice and cozy, I'll give them that. Service was probably the only redeeming factor about this place; our waitress was very friendly and helpful. But man, how can the food be so bad. I really couldn't stomach more than a few bite. It's the sort of food that make you feel bad from eating it that should only be reserved for junk food. How a full price Italian meal could do that to you is beyond me. Everything was lackluster: the gnocchi, the manicotti, and the bread. Crispy gnocchi was soggy, bread was cold, manicotti was bland. Even the Guava Margarita was subpar. They look okay but couldn't have tasted worst. It's just comical how bad the food here was. Don't be fooled by Yelpers' good camera angle and avoid this place at all costs!

Yelp
Went here because it was a late hour and we couldn't get seating past 8:30 at most spots we wanted to try. Thought it would be good because of the positive reviews but it truly was mediocre at best. The pasta was overcooked and we sent it back, it was soggy and sad, what I would imagine trying to roll in a bite of warm wet mop. The gnocchi was okay, but the mozzarella in it was too salty, and it wasn't the pesto you'd expect at a proper Italian spot. The classic bruschetta was terrible- it comes as a "board" but the pickled onions were too sharp and pungent on the palate- would have opted for far less vinegar on the pickling process. The fig ricotta was not whipped enough and was an unappealing color served in an even less alluring way, the tomatoes were okay but nothing to write home about. The only reasonable dish was the ricotta honey bruschetta special they had, which came with blistered grapes but again not the right consistency for the dish. All in all if you're really hungry, this is food. It is not good Italian food and not worth the money... I have eaten cheaper meals that felt more expensive on the tongue.
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
BEST PASTA I'VE EVER HAD! Calamari was alright... the breading kept falling off BUT fettuccine Alfredo WAS DELICIOUS!
google avatar

Dawn F.

Yelp
I haven't been here since the pandemic started, but I'm so glad that the quality of the food and service has not changed a bit. Delicious food, and I'm sorry to say that I forgot to take pictures of our main course. I had some trouble choosing between the shrimp scampi and the gnocchi, and up with the scampi and the shrimp was fresh and plump. The drinks are amazing as well. I highly recommend their panna cotta with a shot of espresso to finish.
google avatar

Esperanza M.

Yelp
amazing pasta a bit on the pricier side however u do get quite a bit. service was great and drinks were divine.

Mark R.

Yelp
Best Italian food in the city! The bolognese is amazing. I recommend the Mozzarella board or fried mozzarella since the mozzarella is made in house. Desserts made in house as well! Best cannoli and tiramisu I have had in a long time. Service was outstanding! (Michelle?) I can't wait to go back...
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
I recently visited Mama Mia Trattoria and I have to say, I was extremely disappointed with my experience. The food was not good at all, the pasta was overcooked and mushy, and the sauce lacked flavor. It was clear that the pasta had been cooked far too long, resulting in a less-than-ideal texture. Overall, I would not recommend Mama Mia Trattoria. The food was subpar and the service was "ehh." Save yourself the disappointment and find somewhere else to dine. They get 2 stars because the young lady who greeted and showed us to our table was very pleasant.
google avatar

Siara C.

Yelp
I would give this place 5 stars if I was only reviewing the food, but our server treated my birthday party as if we were poor lol. Food was delicious but it wasn't the friendliest vibes at all.
google avatar

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
My coworker were in Portland for work and this is where the hotel host recommended for Italian! Loved the ambiance, simple and classy. We tried one of the cocktails but it tasted like straight sugar so we didn't drink it, the waitress was sweet and didn't charge us for them. We ordered a bottle of the sauv blanc. I got the beef bolognese, and she got the pesto gnocchi. The Caesar salad we got as an app was tiny and didn't taste like ceaser, not a fan. The pasta though was to phenomenal, would definitely go back again! Just stick to the wine and pasta. We also got calamari and Brussels sprouts and those were great as well!
google avatar

Jen M.

Yelp
We have ordered Mama Mia's multiple times, and it seems to just keep getting better with each meal. Our absolute favorite dishes are the Chicken Parmesan and the Veal Piccata. The flavors permeate ever bite, and the meat is so tender that it melts in your mouth, even when you get it "to go". And the pasta! Don't even get me started on the pasta. They give you three different options of pasta sauces with the pasta side that comes with your meal: a traditional marinara, a homemade pesto and some kind of garlic. All are delicious, but I highly recommend the pesto; you will not regret it. Tonight we also tried their mozzarella sticks appetizer, and it was DIVINE! Great. Now I'm hungry again and I've already cooked dinner. Guess it's time to pull up my DoorDash app. **sigh** See you soon, Mama Mia!

Hailey P.

Yelp
Why is this place rated so low?? It has the gorgeous atmosphere, delectable food made from scratch, and excellent service of an upscale fine dining establishment with much lower prices. Shout out to Sarah for being a fantastic server with great recommendations!! Don't listen to the reviews, you need to check this place out ASAP!!
google avatar

T S.

Yelp
The food was delicious, the staff was very friendly, and they were quick. The overall aesthetics of the space was open and cozy at the same time. The manager was attentive to the patrons and appeared to love what he did. Try the fried mozzarella you will not regret it. My next visit to Portland will definitely include this tasty option.
google avatar

Yelp
On our quick visit to Portland, we wanted Italian food one night. Chose this place.....and glad we did! Service? Top notch! Food? Excellent! Atmosphere? Great! Glad we tried this place. It did not disappoint.

Yelp
Walked in on a Tuesday night to try this place out, as I've been driving past it for years and wanted to see what it was all about. Its a very vintage looking place with nice clean tables, and very kind staff that really made us feel welcome! However that's just about the only thing this place had going for it. We ordered the crispy ricotta gnocchi and the manicotti. The overall flavor was lacking, if you could get any through the mounds of salt, and the crispy gnocchi was completely soft. Not to mention both the dishes weren't even hot. It was like someone left it sitting out for 30 minutes and didn't even bother tossing it in the microwave. At ~25$ a dish, I'd expect at least some hot food. It seems this place gets reviews much better than what I experienced, but it was truly a let down.
google avatar

Jackie M.

Yelp
Always a great dinner. The gnocchi are my favorite, with their delicious salty bolognese sauce. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Bill N.

Yelp
If you're going to sell pasta plates for over $25, they should at least be good. No such luck here. Clam fettuccini and carbonara both lacking flavor. Side of broccoli frozen and boiled too long. Come on, no redeeming quality in this place.
google avatar

Geoffrey C.

Yelp
It's a solid Italian restaurant in downtown. On a Friday night it was busy, but not packed. At the most folks were waiting about 15 minutes so they would grab a drink at the bar until their table was ready. Portions are very generous. Crispy brussel sprouts was great, very standard and what you would expect. The Cioppino really was slightly spicy, just had the right hint. The seafood in it was plentiful and tasted great. Watch your step was entering and exiting!

JR P.

Yelp
It is a travesty that this place has a 3.7 star rating. What an experience. Cesar salad clearly used a homemade dressing with real anchovies. Pizza was unbelievable. Drinks were fantastic. Especially the Bon Temps. And the cannolis rival what we make at home from scratch every new years. Service was great too. Sara was our server and she was attentive without being a pest. This place is a gem!

Manasa P.

Yelp
The only positive point here is ambiance. Had better Italian food at cheesecake factory. Had the blandest food ever. Food was below average for the price.

Kristy C.

Yelp
First timer here, read reviews and wanted to try. We were seated right away, started with focaccia bread oil/balsamic vinegar; very good. I had the wedge salad and my hubby ordered the brussel sprouts and caesar salad. All were excellent and good portion size. I ordered the eggplant parmesan with pesto pasta and my hubby ordered the seafood pasta. It took a while to come, but we're still working on our appetizer. When our entrees did come, it was worth the wait! The tomato sauce was delicious and the eggplant was crispy. The pasta was tasty too, while the seafood pasta was excellent as well. The decor was rather dark so we needed our phone lights to read the menu. The service was friendly and attentive too!
google avatar

Ana K.

Yelp
Service was good, but the food was just pretty good. The free bread was plentiful, but it was too salty and full of rosemary. Now, their caesar salad and fettuccine alfredo with chicken was better than most others. Also, enjoyed their affogato.

Yelp
On my way into downtown from the airport, we passed by Mama Mia and my Lyft driver recommended it. I'm glad she did!!! It's walking distance from most hotels in downtown, so I came back here at night for dinner. Their house wine is a chianti and it pairs so well with many of their dishes. Excellent meal wine! I highly recommend! Their entrées all look good, but I ordered their chicken parm and it came with a side of spaghetti. The spaghetti noodles were cooked perfectly with a slight crisp to it! The chicken parm totally hit the spot, and it all paired very well with the wine! I'm very impressed! Portions were also very generous! I probably could've split the entree with my girlfriend. To top it off, the service as excellent. The host seated me quickly and my server was very attentive. I look forward to returning next time I'm in Portland!

Diya D.

Yelp
First things first, the service was excellent. They treat you well. Our waitress was so kind and thoughtful, especially when she saw I wasn't in the best mood. She's been at the restaurant for over 10 years and anticipated our needs. Service was fast, and she came by often enough but not too often. I wish I remembered her name. We went on Monday of Memorial weekend. The food was delicious. Complimentary house bread, and their verde(?) thin crust pizza tasted good and not heavy. We had the special: vegetarian lasagna. Instead of overwhelming you with cheese, it had green noodles/layers and veggies. The cheese was well done too. We also enjoyed their coffee, watermelon lemonade seasonal, and Graham's Ruby port! Better port selection than most places. Ambiance was lovely: open and airy, high ceilings, tall windows overlooking the street, accent chandeliers. I left much happier than when I came! Thank you to the professional waitress.

Yelp
Excellent food and service! The portions are big and the desserts were amazing. First time in Portland will definitely come back!

Mike F.

Yelp
Enjoyed the food, the service, and the ambience. Would eat there again. The homeless living and wandering around the restaurant don't do any favors for the location. Guessing that the problem will get worse...sad.
