Netflix Docuseries ‘Evil Genius’ Tells the True-Crime Story of the Pizza Bomber | Eater

"A pizzeria in Erie, Pennsylvania was the workplace of employee Brian Wells, who on August 28, 2003 left to deliver a pizza and within an hour entered a nearby bank wearing an active bomb around his neck and carrying a cane-shaped gun plus written instructions; after a teller surrendered about $8,000 he was apprehended in a strip mall down the road, prompting a bomb squad and heavy media attention. The ensuing investigation uncovered another equally grisly crime nearby, and local police and the FBI struggled to stitch together enough evidence to link the incidents, leaving the small community shaken by the bizarre, multi-layered events and the questions about how Wells became ensnared in the plot." - Greg Morabito

Google
A pizza that my boyfriend and I finally agree on! Tried Mama Mia’s out for the first time after tasting many local pies, and we are convinced this is our new place. The prices are low and the tastes are high quality! We’ll be back soon.

Google
I visit often, the food is great, pricing and availability can be interesting. I was scolded once for being late to pick up my order because it'll not provide the best food experience. They're right, pizza is better piping hot 😁

Google
This is my new favorite pizza place! The pizza is delicious and everyone is always so friendly when you walk through the door. Great prices too!

Google
BEST PIZZA EVER. Tried it a few weeks ago when we were on a little weekend trip to Erie. It was so freaking good that we packed our two year old and three month old into the car today and drove all the way from Cleveland just for their pizza. I don’t know if it’s the sauce, the crust, the perfect amount of cheese or all three but damn, it’s good pizza. Worth a trip from anywhere if you ask our family. Thanks, Mama Mia’s. You’re our favorite!

Google
I ordered 2 combo subs. Xtra meat. If I didn't it would be all bread. I also said 1 sub with tomato.. it had 3 pieces of cubed tomatoes.I honestly will never order from them again. Extra meat was a joke. WLF.

Google
Decided to try the restaurant for the first time and called in a order. Just 1 item, my total was for $16. The lady on the phone demanded since this is my first time ordering, I need to pay now with my card... Ok no big deal, had to pull over and dig for my wallet but I complied... My wife went into the restaurant to get the food we paid for and the lady working refused to give my wife the food unless I came in and signed a paper. What a joke. Waist of our time. Next time il stick with restaurants that actually feed their customers.

Google
In town for a travel hockey game. We searched for nearby pizza places and landed on this place.. We got Wings, Italian subs and cheese pizza.. Everything was awesome and the prices are hard to beat. Highly recommended

Yelp
I just called Mamma Mia's to order a Stromboli and they told me I was banned. She informed me that August 2021. I ordered a Stromboli and I never picked it up. I blew in my car and I never paid for the food. Number one if they would've contacted me I probably wasn't even thinking about the food. They're lucky I called them to let them know that my motor blue. But to ban somebody for something as stupid as that. I actually knew that I wasn't allowed to order. They didn't tell me I was banned. She just wouldn't accept the orders from my phone so I would use my grandson's phone or use my house phone, but of course I'm in my car so I decided to place the order without thinking about it. It's actually most times when I order I just go pick it up and her son's usually there or somebody else is behind the counter, but I have been ordering for Mamma Mia's since they were on peach Street 25 years ago. And I will order from them again they're Stromboli's aren't as good as they used to be when the other people owned it but they're OK. Guess I'll be going to Stevo's.

Yelp
BEST pizza in Erie!!!!! We only order pizza from here at least every other Friday. My family has tried several different pizzas and all were amazing. My fav is the Hawaiian chicken. And the staff is very friendly!

Yelp
Short and sweet it pays to check out different restaurants well being out of town shopping. The restaurant has been a staple in Erie for almost 40 years...which was a definite perk in finding food after shopping. Staff was friendly...food made fresh to order...the dough in stromboli was bon appetit...the spices and combination of flavor made it taste like it was fresh out of Italian kitchen. Will be back for sure next time in area to try the pizza or calzone.

Yelp
I feed a team of 25 high school athletes and parents. We had delicious pizza, breadsticks, and salad. It was hot and fresh. I added some chicken tenders too as it was a late night. The staff had recommendations and some guidelines which were easy to meet. My daughter really enjoyed the Margherita pizza! The ingredients were fresh! Looking forward to a return trip to the area.

Yelp
We were very happy with MamaMias pizza. People were friendly and helpful. We are new to Erie and have been wanting a good pizza. We were not disappointed, it was delicious. It's very close to our house so we will be returning. More stuff on the menu we would like to try.

Yelp
Still amazing. Best pizza place Erie has. Always my go to. Great service and Stromboli!! Pickle pizza was a favorite

Yelp
Mama mias best pizza in the county. I am from New York, where they have great pizza, Mama Mia is just as good. I prices are really fair. Had a meatball sub and a pie, delicious, hero was enough for 3 people, 18" long bread with 8 meatballs for $ 6 bucks crazy, had it for 3 days. Don't go anywhere else
google avatar

Devan B.

Yelp
I was extremely disappointed. The crust on the pizza was hard and chewy. They put too much sauce in the calzone, no ricotta cheese, and it was undercooked. Maybe I just came on a bad night, but I won't be returning to find out whether I did or not. I guess I am still on the hunt for the best pizza in Erie. So far, all the places I have tried that advertise to have pizza like New York, have been a huge disappointment.

Yelp
Every time I order they forget something or tell me after I've already paid that they cannot give me what I ordered. Very petty with sauces. I'm ok with paying but AGAIN they tell me after I've already paid. Everybody in the building is very unprofessional. They no longer get my business and that's a shame as I love supporting local establishments.

Yelp
Pizza was good! Antipasto salad was good. Wings with the HOUSE sauce were amazing! Coming for a long weekend.. great quick pizza night! Must try!

Yelp
We had trouble with our phone service but the owner was patient with us since we had to call several times due to dropped calls. My daughter who doesn't normally like pizza eat 3 pieces of the White pizza. My husband like the pizza rolls. The small tossed salad feed 3 of us. Delivery was on time. Would reccomend!

Yelp
Stopped in on my way through Erie. The two employees working were very friendly and my pizza (garlic, broccoli, and tomatoes) was delicious! I will definitely be back!

Yelp
I was in charge of planning a retirement party for my office & I ordered all of the food from Mama Mia's. For a party of 40 people we ordered 120 Wings, 14 Lg Pizzas, & 2 Party Antipasto Salads. Left overs: ~10 wings, 3.5 pizzas, .75 Party Antipasto Salad. Wing flavors were BBQ, Butter & Garlic, Medium, Hot Honey Mustard, Dry Ranch, & Parmasean Garlic. Everyone loved all of the wings. The left overs were BBQ & Medium wings. The quanitity ordered was perfect. Pizza flavors were 3 Pepperoni, 2 sausage & mushroom, 2 pepperoni & hot pepper, 2 chicken BBQ, 2 Philly Steak, 2 Supreme, and 1 Pulled Pork. The pizza was a hit too. The left overs were 1 Pepperoni & Banana Pepper, 1 Sausage & Mushroom, 1 Chicken BBQ, and 1/2 Supreme. People were asking about the pulled pork pizza long after it was gone. The Philly Steak pizza was the next one to run out. Originally I planned on 12 pizzas (3 slices each) and at the last second I threw in 2 extra pizzas. I should have stuck to the original 12 pizzas, but I'd rather have too much than too little and for a party that size, 3.5 left over pizzas isn't excessive. It's not hard to get rid of left over pizza either ;) Salads were fresh & packed to the brim with antipasto goodness. 2 was the right quanitity. I scheduled delivery for 4pm. The delivery guy was there at 3:45pm (better early than late!) and even helped us arrange the pizzas. Our total bill was ~$300, which is fantastic for a 40 person party. I got lots of compliments on the food & lots of people asked me where it was from. I would definitely recommend them to anyone planning a pizza party :) Thanks, Mama Mia's!!

Yelp
Yuck would have been better off getting a frozen pizza:( there are much better places in Erie. We were staying at a hotel on upper peach and got take out. To ad insult to injury, when I asked if they had some paper plates and napkins the guy told me "No, only if you were dinning in ":0

Yelp
I just called to place an order of Stromboli without peppers and mushrooms, the young lady on the phone told me I then needed to ordered a calzone instead and it would be cheaper anyway, I said cool, she asked what I wanted in the calzone, I said everything that is in the Stromboli less the pepper and mushrooms ADD ham. But I also didn't want the ricotta cheese that is in a calzone. I then said "wait this is more than just the Stromboli because you're charge $1.50 per item correct?" Then she said "do you want to figure this out and call me back" I said "well I had it figured out and I just asked you a question but..." And she hung up on me. Seriously?!?! Valerio's guess you're getting my business tonight!

Yelp
This was poor Pizza it was chewy underdone with sauce and all around bad Pizza I will not be going to this place again they were rude and unwilling to accept their mistakes even going to state that apparently my speed and pizza was Little Caesars

Yelp
3 stars for the food, 1 star for the great customer service and speedy delivery (not getting lost coming to our place). It will be hard for me to order from any other pizza place going forward because each and every one has just been a big fail. I must tell you in advance that I have only tried their calzone and wings. The small size calzone is about half of the size of a medium pizza. That sucker is huge! The dough and sauce are very fresh and the calzone has a good flavor. The wings are OK, I've definitely had better. I did not care for their BBQ wings, a bit too sweet for my taste; I like them smokey and spicy. I'd definitely recommend ordering from Mama Mia's. If you are new to the Erie area do not waste your time trying to find a "go to" place for ordering in. Seriously trust me on this one. This is the only place I have not had to wait for over an hour to have subpar, cold food delivered.

Yelp
Really great pizza! There's lots of different kinds of pizza out there, and everyone has their own preference. I used to be a fan of Domino's but the franchise is so scaled down it's just not convenient for me anymore. I thought Wegmans Pizza or Little Caesars was the next best thing but I obviously forgot what I was missing. Momma Mia's hits the spot and then some! I am a fan!

Yelp
We stopped on our way through from a trip to Niagara. The previous reviews that belittle the service are difficult to understand. The service was very friendly and the pizza was satisfactory. We will keep this in mind if traveling through again since it was so quiet and we were served so quickly.

Yelp
Mama Mia's is a good quick inexpensive pizza joint located near all the hotels. We ordered take out and got a small pizza, which was fine for 2 people, and some pepperoni rolls and were more than satisfied. The pepperoni balls were pretty good but lathing amazing. A little garlic butter dipping sauce would have made them amazing. The pizza was greasy but not more than normal pizza and was quite enjoyable. Good crust and not too much sauce. Total bill was less then $12. Can't beat that! We would definitely go here again for the price and speediness as well as good quality.

Brett G.

Yelp
I love this place, friendly staff, made sure I had everything I needed before sitting down the pizza....it was absolutely EXPLOSIVE in flavor!!
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
Great service, extremely fast, distinct taste that makes us keep coming back. Went here several times. The are will to substitute their ingredients if there's something you don't like.

April F.

Yelp
I gave one star because their food is pretty good. A big improvement over the previous owner, which we've been pretty excited about. But the horrible attitude and customer service will keep us from ordering from here again. Not a smart move when there are over 100 other pizza places within a 10 mile radius. So sorry your holiday weekend had to start 2 minutes late because of previously loyal (now former) customers.
google avatar

Tawnya R.

Yelp
Ordered from here last night at a non peak time. The pizza was good but the steak and cheese sub was inedible!!!! The worse sub I ever had. For the price I expected atleast more than one slice of cheese (which was overcooked so much you couldn't even see the cheese anymore) the steak was so overdone I couldn't even chew it. Hard to recommend this place when you overpay for a substandard sub that isn't even prepared fresh. Tried to call and complain but phone just rang and no awnser
google avatar

Erin R.

Yelp
We were looking for some good authentic Erie pizza and thought this would be the place. We were all so disappointed with the pizza. The pizza balls were good and the pepperoni balls okay but the pizza was not good. Giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because of the pizza balls.

Yelp
My wife and I have an on going argument about the best pizza we've had so far in Erie, Pa. The first handmade dough pizza I had in Erie was Stevo's and I was so excited. Then we ordered a Mama Mia's Pizza for delivery and was quite pleased. Stevo's is closer to the NYC style pizza I grew up on, but there is something about Mama Mia's taste that makes me lean towards my wife's side of the argument. You can't beat the staff (at least over the phone) at Mama Mia's and they deliver faster than anyone I've experienced in town so far. If you prefer a hand tossed dough, (Like I do), you can't go wrong with Mama Mia's Pizza. Ask for 8 slices to enjoy a larger slice of Pizza in the NYC style. Enjoy!

Michael B.

Yelp
I ordered the family bucket size spaghetti, got a 6 by 6 by2 inches of pasta with very little sause. I also ordered a garlic bread with cheese. It came with the aluminum foil folded into the cheese. Took me five minutes to clean. If you have fillings in your teeth, this is not good. Called about the pasta size, girl said yep that's what our bucket is and rudely excused herself. There is to many good Italian restaurants in Erie for me to ever order from this place again. Grade D-

Sara B.

Yelp
This is my favorite local pizza place and I have lived in Erie my whole life. Owners are very friendly, Pizza is consistently delicious.
google avatar

S S.

Yelp
Not the friendliest service. I'm sure it's ok if you just order off the menu, but if you order a pizza sub with no pepperoni, stand behind the cooler and see how they talk about you. They don't use gloves or wash hands right from register either
google avatar

Dave K.

Yelp
Good pizza in Erie, PA is not an easy find. Mama Mia's is a pretty solid option. The delivery area has good coverage and they are reliable and the thin crust pizza is worth a try. In a more competitive market I'd rank three stars but it's four for the Erie market.

Maggie G.

Yelp
Like the pizza... love the wings! We used to order delivery quite often but it started taking them an hour or more to arrive and it got quite frustrating. I also called for pick-up a few times on Sundays during football season last year... and they were CLOSED...lol. I found that quite odd.
google avatar

Amelia B.

Yelp
I have only ordered pick up so I can't speak to their dining service but overall I was pleased. Between the time I ordered and the time I had the pizza in my hands was all of 20 minutes. The pizza is more on the greasy side which I like, and the small pizza size is fairly generous. The one staff person I encountered wasn't super customer-service oriented, but I don't really expect that from my pizza place. She was direct and to the point which is fine by me. I've been here just once but will likely go again!

Javier C.

Yelp
The new owners originally skimped on toppings and I stopped going for a while. I have gone back a few times this year and they have made a huge improvement. This is the Mama Mia's I have always loved. Top 3 pizza place in Erie PA

Greg C.

Yelp
I only get the rigatoni and have the owner bake a layer of provolone mozzarella. cheese onto the top of it. The meatballs are as good as home made. The Sauce is fresh and has the aroma a texture of made from scratch. Pasta is cooked perfectly, not mushy and it's a pretty large portion to eat at one sitting. Definitely the best rigatoni concoction I've had anywhere in NW PA. This place is tiny inside and I always eat-in. I haven't tried any of the other menu items since I have a favorite pizza place near my home. I do go out of my way to get to Mama Mia's but it's worth the effort.

Tina D.

Yelp
I have had mamma's a few times over 20 years. The calzones are excellent and so is the fresh dough pizza. For the first time we tried the family sub........a whole loaf italian bread combo for $7.99. We were very dissappointed. It seemed like they had put the ingredients for a regular sub in this loaf sub. There was way too much bread and not much meat and cheese. I was very dissappointed. Stick to pizza.

Cheryl N.

Yelp
everything that i've purchased from mama mia's is excellant. they use fresh doe. cheese & pep pizza, buffalo chicken pizza, and calzones are the best i've ever tasted. their supreme pizzas are packed with toppings. my father will only buy spaghetti from them! the staff is courteous, and delivery is excellant.
