The Best Holiday Tamales in Phoenix | Eater Phoenix

"Once a farmers market favorite, Mama Olga’s Tamales now operates out of a cozy brick-and-mortar spot in Sunnyslope. At $5 each or $27.25 per dozen, they strike the right balance of masa to filling. Pickup and delivery are available, and occasional appearances at farmers markets across the Valley keep the original spirit alive — check their social media for updates." - McConnell Quinn

We are regulars at Mama Olga’s and they are great people, always great service but it seems like they changed their ingredients or maybe it is someone else making the tamales this past year and halfish because the flavor if not the same. The masa doesn’t taste like masa seems like too much additive and there is a strong sour taste to the tamales and way too much oregano. Don’t taste like the good ol’ authentic tamales we started buying years ago. Still decent but need to find somewhere that has tamales that just taste like tamales not where going to go then they change it up. Would love recommendations

Awsome beef n chicken tamales 🫔. Pretty popular place. 3$:a tamales 🫔. Half doz or full doz or more available. Very small parking n need fix streets in sunnyslope as we all know. I go once a week. 😋 😋 😋

I called an order in for 6 green chili chicken tamales. While on the phone the gentleman asked “chicken?” I clarified “green chili chicken”. I got home, and about 2 tamales in, I thought they were pretty bland and realized that these were in fact, just plain, boring, chicken tamales. No green chili to be found. I am a little confused since just a plain chicken tamale isn’t even on the menu. I ended up throwing the rest out cause even after drowning them in Texas Pete, there was absolutely no flavor except a sickening buttery/cheese flavor. Giving 2 stars cause at least the people running the place were nice. I even gave them a 20% tip 🤦🏼‍♀️

Google
CIGARETTE SMOKE IN FOOD The lady taking the order is so rude. Huffing, puffing & rolling her eyes because I asked for the price of enchiladas Edit- Me & my coworkers will no longer eat here. I took the food & once I got to work I realized everything smelled like cigarette smoke. The bag, the boxes & even the food. My car & hands stink! They only refunded half of my order. The food and service used to be good here.

I honestly don't even know how this place has so many good reviews the tamales that we were sold were undercooked, chalky, and tasted sour! When we went back to ask for a refund we were told that nothing was wrong with them and the woman would not give us our money back! Don't waste your money here horrible food and horrible customer service! The owner called us back hours later and asked if we could come back so he could give us a refund, we drive back down and the owner was horrible to my boyfriend. He tried to lecture him before giving us our money back! We tried to cook the tamales more and he tried to take credit for them being the texture they were supposed to be! Even after we had cooked them more for an hour they still did not taste right! The owner asked us how many we had tried from our 18 tamales we ordered and charged us almost 20 dollars for 5 tamales! The tamales we tried that were shared with other people were mush and fell apart we had to throw them away! The owner was so rude and was telling my boyfriend "well everyone else loves my tamales" then where is all of the business because I didn't see a single person there the 3 times that we went back! We will never come here again or recommend this place to anyone else EVER! Please save your money and go some where else where they actually value their food they are selling and their customers!

COME ON!?!? SERIOUSLY??? DELICIOUS!! First time trying. Small building on the side of the road resembles a motor home but don't let the tiny building fool you! Wanted to try one tamale but ended up ordering 4. (Prices were to good) FANTASTIC. Seasoned well. Perfect masa to meat ratio. Friendly and quick. 2 tiny tables inside so it seems more appropriate to order take out. We will be back.

Yelp
I have bought our tamales from here in the past. However the price has gone up to 35.00 for a dozen. Won't be coming back.

Yelp
Flies flying everywhere inside where they cook, no soap in bathroom and tamales were under cooked..

Yelp
Ordered online to pick up. They said (I think. I don't speak a lot of Spanish, they didn't speak a lot of English. Be aware of the language barrier before you order here) they hadn't received the order and kinda walked off. Poor customer service. Also no parking here if you're eating in or picking up.

Yelp
Caught their booth at Glendale glitters, great tamales with no fillers. Absolutely amazing. Will definitely be buying some more from them :-)

Yelp
These are the worst tamales I have ever had. They are undercooked, fall apart, chalky, and tastes almost sour! We went to bring them back for a refund and they would not give us one! The woman kept on saying that there was nothing wrong with them and that's just how they are. I have never had a tamale like that before! I wish I could give no stars I would never recommend a place like this to anyone! Horrible food and horrible customer service!

Yelp
I consider myself a Mexican food connoisseur and often have a hard time finding authentic Mexican food outside of Mexico. I was in the area picking up my truck from last night when I had a few too many cervesas. The Uber ride there was awkward as expected, so I spent the ride looking up restaurants in the area I was getting dropped off at. After 20 minutes of searching, I found Mama Olga's and decided to drive the extra couple miles there before I headed home. I'm not going to lie, I have never been in this specific area and was surprised how bad of spot it is. However, don't be fooled as this is usually a sign that the food is going to be fire. I think walking through Sonoyta might have been safer. The restaurant is right on Hatcher, but you can't tell right off the bat where you're supposed to enter (spoiler - use the East door). The ambience is wonderful and transported me straight to Mexico. Not the Americanized part. There are two tables inside, a couple large freezers, and two closet doors that open up to the kitchen. Two young ladies were working and they weren't particularly friendly, but did what they were there to do. My two tamales were ready in a few minutes and I was on my way. I wish I would have eaten them there, so I didn't have to go back for more. I'm headed back shortly to get a couple dozen. As of today, they were only selling tamales. No tacos, burritos, beans, or rice - just tamales. I paid $5.62 for two tamales which came with a side of green salsa. The tamales were average sized and were mostly meat. If you're a fan of tamales that are heavy on the masa, then this isn't your place. The masa is soft and honestly perfect. The red beef and green chicken is well seasoned, tender, and plentiful. At first I was a little ticked that I didn't get a red salsa for my red beef tamale. I stopped caring once I tried the green salsa. This is hands down the best green salsa I've ever had. It is *actually* spicy and is perfect on the green chicken tamale. I am going to try to get a bulk cup when I go back for more tamales. I'm honestly surprised at how good these tamales are. If you're sketched out by questionable places in not-so-good areas with smelly parking lots - go somewhere else. You should get over yourself and try this spot though lol.

Yelp
Best tamales in town bar none!!! Nice people as well. Don't let the location scare you off.

Yelp
There is a young lady that comes to Apache Junction on Tues to sell these delicious tamales. I have never tasted a better tamale than what I get from Mama Olga. I am hoping she will come this Tues so I can stock up for family coming at Christmas. You won't be sorry, but you will get hooked on these. You can taste the love! Thank you Mama!

Yelp
Ambiance: Super small Mexican restaurant. Only two tables inside but several in their outdoor shaded patio. Most patrons order from the outside takeout window. This is located in what some may call a "rough" part of the sunnyslope, I'll leave it at that. I work across the street at a homeless shelter. Food: locally known for tamales both regular and sweet. The green Chile chicken tamales were amazing. The sweet bread elotes were also a great touch to finish off the meal. You can get them frozen (for home) or hot and ready to eat. Their burritos are ok but for 7.50 I would expect a little more that just meat/rice/beans...was overtly grease. Overall: Great local place to get your tamale fix.

Yelp
Mama Olga's was at the farmers market I go to. I love tamales and my grandma lives away so I thought I would try. They were really good!!. We got one pork & one beef & they were so delicious & flavorful. Not too much masa, not too much of the meat, it was the perfect amount. The perfect size for lunch or dinner was 2 for the serving.

Yelp
I ordered 2 dozen tamales, The first batch I found a black hair in one of my tamales that grossed me out so I opened the Second batch heated them up and they just fell apart the were just a greasy nasty mess, I would never buy from them again!

Yelp
Hello, this was our first time visiting Mama Olga's. We had to go to Tractor Supply and she had a tent set up right in The parking lot off Cotton. We are very picky about our Mexican food as I used to work in a Mexican Restaurant. We bought 6 pork Tamales and 6 chicken Tamales. No kidding at all.............. These are the BEST Tamales we have ever eaten!!! SO happy she was there. She could not have been nicer and more helpful too! We'll definitely be back. We can't wait to try all her other specialties!!! YUM!

Yelp
I'm Mexican so of course I've exposed to my Nana's tamales - both of them ...and then various aunts as well. So I have had some pretty damn good tamales before. However the family lives in a different city and some co-workers wanted tamales during the holidays so i found this place because it looked legit. It's pretty pricey for tamales IMO but then again I usually get them for free so it's not a fair comparison - make your money! Anyway in terms of the tamales they're ok. The co-workers seemed to like them at least (they're not mexican or from the Southwest) and they said they were some of the best they've had ...so there you go. Although I'll admit I went home the following weekend and my mom made some tamales and it was no comparison. Mom beats momma olga lol.

Yelp
They came through at the last minute and delivered on Christmas Eve. Much appreciated.

Yelp
The tamales are really good. They just never have any elote tamales & sometimes they don't have beans & rice so u only get tamales. Service is alright, idk they don't even seem happy to be there working.

Yelp
We stumbled on an outpost of Mama Olga's up in the sticks north of Phoenix where people go off-roading. My husband loves tamales-real and authentic, made by someone's abuela often sold in the parking lots of supermarkets- so when we found them, he wasn't hesitant to try them as tamales are worth the risk. Needless to say, we've now become regulars at Mama Olga's here in N. Phoenix. The location is sketchy and a little scary, but the authenticity is on point. His description is moist, clean and fresh meat (he hates gristle or fatty spots), delicious, authentic and nostalgic. He's the type that buys extra to freeze and reheats them using a steam method on the stove top. He's pretty well versed in tamales and these are the best he's ever had.

Yelp
Best I've had in years, the very best. A true non-commercial tamale, with lots of meat and flavor. Place is a hole in the wall, to be sure, and you may have a bit of trouble communicating if you don't speak Spanish, but they try their butts off, especially the young man who drops his knapsack when he gets off school and starts taking orders (his English is very good). If you're very lucky they have a 2 tamale plate, enchilada style (red or green) with beans and rice for $5. I just shipped their tamales across the country to friends who bemoan the lack of good tamales where they live. Try it!

Yelp
No better place in all Az for tamales hands down you will not be disappointed, you will wish you ordered more!!!

Yelp
Had some of their tamales for takeout last night and they were amazing. Some of the best tamales I've had my favorite was the chicken with green chili. Highly recommend trying them.

Yelp
Bought some tamales while in Cleator, AZ. Had a few street tacos and a burrito to go. OH MY! best ever. They can't make anything you won't love. Family owned and operated. Love love love their food. And sauces!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Bought tamales at a tent of Tractor Supply, 2 dozen @ $25/dozen. Not worth it at all. Pork and chicken, average. Did I mention $25/dozen? Shame on me....

Yelp
Delicious! Saw add on Facebook and ordered some tamales! They were not ready, but the staff was so accommodating! They delivered them at no cost!

Yelp
Great spot for authentic tamales and top notch Mexican food. Even if you're out of the area, check with them because they deliver (example: Prescott area). Great flavor, great price. You can't beat it.

Mike M.

Yelp
This place is bomb. I saw it driving by and doubled back. I made the right move. You should too. Not sure how long they have been here or why they only have one review, but don't sleep on this place if you like tamales. I have been in restaurant industry for a long time and the only way to get legit tamales is through the back door. This place make that unnecessary. You can pick up tamales when ever you want, you don't need to wait for someone to show up with the goods.

Smilez D.

Yelp
The food look nice but is ok if I can rate this place a high C. I order the chicken tamales and was disappointed with the food

Suky P.

Yelp
These are absolutely the best tamales we've ever had. We found their stand at the Arrowhead Farmers Market about a month ago. Decided to give it a try since we love tamales. We ordered 6 red pork and 6 red beef. Both flavors were delicious. Hoping that we can preorder several dozen for Christmas, they're as good (ok better) than the ones we make at home every year. Definitely recommending that anyone who loves tamales give these a try.

Yelp
really good spot to get some tamales in the valley. i aint gon lie, ya need to step up and come see what they cooking up here @Mama Olga's. they serve food while following all the pandemic protocols. 10/10. this is some place to NOT forget.

Jessica R.

Yelp
Extremely disappointed with Mama Olga's. We have ordered their tamales several times with no issue, but I ordered 2 dozen the week before Christmas and was told I would get them Monday the 23rd and after contacting them on the 23rd was told there are none. They finally brought tamales on the 28th, but they dropped off more than I ordered and then wanted me to pay for the extra rather than pick them up or let me return them. Half of the tamales reeked of smoke as if they had been cooked in a burned pot and the therefore were inedible as they tasted like smoke as well. I reached out to them via DM and they offered no solution. Will not be purchasing again.
