I consider myself a Mexican food connoisseur and often have a hard time finding authentic Mexican food outside of Mexico. I was in the area picking up my truck from last night when I had a few too many cervesas.
The Uber ride there was awkward as expected, so I spent the ride looking up restaurants in the area I was getting dropped off at. After 20 minutes of searching, I found Mama Olga's and decided to drive the extra couple miles there before I headed home.
I'm not going to lie, I have never been in this specific area and was surprised how bad of spot it is. However, don't be fooled as this is usually a sign that the food is going to be fire. I think walking through Sonoyta might have been safer.
The restaurant is right on Hatcher, but you can't tell right off the bat where you're supposed to enter (spoiler - use the East door). The ambience is wonderful and transported me straight to Mexico. Not the Americanized part. There are two tables inside, a couple large freezers, and two closet doors that open up to the kitchen.
Two young ladies were working and they weren't particularly friendly, but did what they were there to do. My two tamales were ready in a few minutes and I was on my way. I wish I would have eaten them there, so I didn't have to go back for more. I'm headed back shortly to get a couple dozen.
As of today, they were only selling tamales. No tacos, burritos, beans, or rice - just tamales. I paid $5.62 for two tamales which came with a side of green salsa.
The tamales were average sized and were mostly meat. If you're a fan of tamales that are heavy on the masa, then this isn't your place. The masa is soft and honestly perfect. The red beef and green chicken is well seasoned, tender, and plentiful.
At first I was a little ticked that I didn't get a red salsa for my red beef tamale. I stopped caring once I tried the green salsa. This is hands down the best green salsa I've ever had. It is *actually* spicy and is perfect on the green chicken tamale. I am going to try to get a bulk cup when I go back for more tamales.
I'm honestly surprised at how good these tamales are. If you're sketched out by questionable places in not-so-good areas with smelly parking lots - go somewhere else. You should get over yourself and try this spot though lol.
