Mexican Restaurant Mama Por Dios Opening in the Gaslamp - Eater San Diego

"Mama Por Dios, a fancy Mexican restaurant with locations in Beverly Hills and Rancho Cucamonga, is expanding to San Diego. The restaurant is taking over a prominent, 7,893-square-foot spot at the corner of 4th and Island in the Gaslamp that’s been vacant since Bice shuttered in the summer of 2017" - Candice Woo

Delicious all around and cocktails were fresh! Atmosphere is fun and lively with a true Baja style! It's a little pricey but worth it. If you are looking for a quiet dinner...this is not for you.

I have been wanting to try this place out for a while now, I loved the atmosphere and the music. The food was not the best, it is served on blocks of wood that im not sure if they get sterilized before every use. The food came out room temp and the flavor was just ok. I should of take a pic but forgot. The drink were my fav great presentation and yummy. They need to step up the service looks like the waiters and waitresses are all gathered in the same place chatting it up while customers are needing service. Some of them are not very friendly no smile what so ever. I get it we all have our bad days but when you work in service with the public you need to leave that at home. Maybe next time we will try to order something different. Just because of how nice the restaurant is, I will give it another try.

Met a friend Friday evening, I was honestly not impressed with the service, food or follow up from server. I will not go again. My food arrived lukewarm, asked to heat it up and it was 10 minute wait. I've had better food, more reasonable prices other restaurants. Their prices are too high. 👎

It's a dazzling place, I love the atmosphere, excelente; the food is exquisite, the service is very good, it's expensive but it's worth it.

Just visited this location at 8PM on Sunday, u didn't know anything about this restaurant prior to going in. I absolutely loved the atmosphere and the service, we were seated quickly without reservations. My girlfriend ordered steak enchilada, which were great. I Birria tacos i ordered were famtastic! I highly suggest the Coco Loco mixed drink it's dangerously tasty. The concept of the restaurant is like a lounge with music, it's a good vibe. I definitely recommend checking this out if you want a fun experience. Please see videos below.

We came to the DTLA location to celebrate my wife's Bday. Service was top notch. Decor was beautiful. Location was awesome. Atmosphere was very trendy but not uncomfortable. Appetizers were all delicious. Our entrées were good. Nothing to complain about. Parking was convenient as well for it being downtown.

Food was delicious! Our server was nice and helpful on the menu questions. They had a live DJ when we went, it was loud in there but I guess that's the ambience of this restaurant. It was a nice experience overall :)

Google
Ambiance: This place is very cute, fairly dark inside as well. Tables aren't too close, but the lighting makes it seem more intimate. It's fairly loud, so there's not much room for a convo. There are lots of whistles, lights, and bells for birthdays with a shot airplane. Service: Decent service, not as attentive as I'd like for the place not to be packed. The server was very nice and needed a bit of assistance for a language barrier, but overall, it was ok. Food: Any place that charges for water is always suspicious to me because why? Overall, the meal was pretty simple, not much different than any other Mexican restaurant I've been to. We all liked what we ordered but weren't really impressed, especially considering the prices. Drinks were the best part.

Yelp
Delicious albeit expensive! I loved the food here everything was great! The quality of ingredients really shine through every plate. The prices reflected this as well...brace yourself it's expensive! Lol! A friend and I had a late lunch. We were a bit gobsmacked when we saw the prices! The highest costing entree item on the menu being $300. I had steak tacos and my friend had steak enchiladas. Each entree cost just under $30 with drinks and a shrimp appetizer we escaped with a bill around $100. However, here is the most important detail...those 3 items we ordered were absolutely delicious and were worth the price! Also it should be noted before judging the prices too harshly, the ambience and service were also top notch. There was even a full time bathroom attendant in the mens room that offered towels after washing my hands. He even offered a variety of colognes that I could use to freshen up before returning to the dining room. If you want to splurge and "Treat Yo'self" definitely give this place a try for lunch or dinner. Just make sure you bring a full wallet!

Yelp
Mama Por Dios in Rancho Cucamonga is truly a gem, offering an exceptional dining experience from start to finish. From the moment we stepped through the doors, we were greeted by the charismatic host, Franky. His warm and genuine welcome set the tone for our Mother's Day lunch, making us feel like valued guests rather than just another reservation. Franky's attentiveness and friendly demeanor ensured that we started our night on a high note. The outstanding service continued with our servers, Consuelo and Brissy. Both were incredibly attentive and knowledgeable, guiding us through the menu with great enthusiasm and providing excellent recommendations. Their prompt service and constant check-ins made us feel well taken care of throughout our meal. They struck the perfect balance of being attentive without being intrusive, allowing us to enjoy our evening to the fullest. The culinary delights at Mama Por Dios were nothing short of spectacular. Each dish was a masterpiece, bursting with flavor and presented with artistic flair. The drinks were equally impressive, with a range of creative cocktails that complemented our meals perfectly. The vibrant atmosphere, complete with lively music and beautifully decorated interiors, added to the overall fun and festive vibe of the restaurant. Mama Por Dios is not just a place to eat; it's a place to celebrate, relax, and create wonderful memories. Highly recommended for anyone looking for an unforgettable dining experience!

Yelp
Came for an early brunch and it was calm and quiet, I loved the decor inside and the presentation of everything seemed intention. The chilaquiles verdes picante were sooo good and fresh, the Dona Lore was full of flavor. The drinks were so overpriced, $7 for a cup of tea/juice and the steak in the guacamole wasn't fresh but still flavorful. But the portions were good, food was flavorful. I enjoyed this restaurant would come back to try a steak for dinner.
google avatar

Yelp
Mexican food for the Authentic Mexican Food Consumer! The chilaquiles have delicious flavor. Both the mole and green chilaquiles are made with a good sauce and aren't overcooked so the chips are still crispy. This is not the place you're going to get "Tex mex" fake Mexican food. Don't expect the huge servings of rice and beans with fake cheese. This place is amazingly good and takes authentic seriously. The fruit and Mexican bread starter is a great start to the meal. They offer Cafè de Olla and table side mimosas. Beautiful venue with great design. Bathrooms are clean. Great place to celebrate. Staff is great and does a great job of offering explanations of the different options. Service is perfect. Great music.

Yelp
Me and husband celebrated our 25 year wedding anniversary here the decor is perfect. The staff is friendly and they are all beautiful I mean soft on the eyes. The food was excellent. I'll be back with more pics and additional review. I highly recommend this place for everything!!!!

Yelp
Pitty I can't leave a negative 1 star review. Mama Por Dios attend to your patrons. I came in with my wife for brunch, we'd been excited to try this place as we had been told good things about it. We were seated at the same time as another party of two - sadly that is where we were forgotten. 10 minutes gone by and not one person had come by to acknowledge us. No drinks to start, no chicharron and guacamole that I was really looking forward to trying, and no wonderful lunch experience with my wife. What's worse was that we walked out and nobody noticed. That just nailed home the shitty experience, and it was by no means busy either.

Yelp
I wanted to love this place!! We go to a lot of restaurants all over the country and especially around Cali!!! We love Nobu, Red O in Newport, Javier's, and so many other spots!! The music, and theme was pretty cool, it reminded me of a spot I went to in Mexico, with the costumes, the signs and music.. etc.... We walked in on Friday night and it wasn't super business. It was around 6:30 pm, and they sat myself and my kiddo outside on the patio, I asked if we could sit at one of the 15 tables empty inside due to how cold it was, and the hostess said sorry walk in's go outside. We put some heaters on and dealt with the cold as long as we could. We noticed 3 didn't parties get up and leave due to the cold weather but we toughed it out. It took 20 minutes for a server to come over and take our order, she was the highlight of dinner. Super knowledgeable and pretty sharp. We ordered the Guacamole with the ribeye in it, super tasty but a little to salty , then some taquitos and finished off with some Churros. Everything was ok, but not amazing even the dessert came out cold and hard. We would have ordered a full dinner but my 8 year old was cold. Now I ordered a Casamigos Reposado Cadillac Margarita and it was pretty good, nice flavor, so I ordered another one then closed out. When the bill came my total was $26.00 per drink they do add a few different fees if it's not just a shot. Now it was good, but not better then Masteos, Viajie, Rosa Mexicano, Toca Madera, Javier's, Gracias Madre, KA'TEEN, RED O etc...and cost more then all of them. We drove from Newport to try this place and it was disappointing overall. They have a lot of staff working but the lack of awareness for guest service, and overall that a guests is in the building, was ignored and with these prices points you need to hit it across the board from A to Z. I recommend that the hostess give a receipt to the server once they sit the table, now the server knows she has one. They do this at most award winning restaurants, even some corporate ones as well. It's a one time experience a cool vibe, but that's about it if you ask me. Now the experience might be better if you book a reservation but we wouldn't know. Good luck

Yelp
We came here on a Monday night to celebrate my Step Son's birthday and had a very nice dining experience and celebration. It wasn't a busy night so we pretty much immediately got seated. The hostess was warm and welcoming which set the tone for a great evening. The vibe here is festive with up beat music playing and the decor is esthetically stunning with beautiful lighting, furniture, and a great bar area. Our main server was attentive, friendly, and made some great recommendations. Now for the drinks and food, I ordered the Jamaica Margarita and my wife had the Tamarind since it was 2 for 1 Margarita Monday. Both drinks were well crafted, delicious, and mixed with fresh ingredients. We also ordered the guacamole that came with tortilla shells with chicharon and an order of queso fundido! Both dishes were delicious, the guacamole was very fresh and delicious. For my main entree I ordered the salmon and my wife had the lobster. Each dish we ordered was a culinary masterpiece that transported our tastebuds to various levels. The wait staff also did an amazing job in celebrating our sin's birthday, it just made the night extra special. In conclusion, Mama Por Dios exceeded our expectations not only satisfying our palate's but created a long lasting impression of a great dining experience.

Yelp
Although I think the food was good, I don't think it is worth the value. The prices were comparable to Spago Beverly Hills or Nobu which are both 4 diamond restaurants. The $8 bottled water charge was excessive. Not even Rodeo Drive restaurants charge for water. I can understand why people love the aesthetics of the place, because yes, the music is great, the lights are a vibe, the gimmicks of course are likeable, but at the end of it, it is just that. A gimmick. A very well played gimmick that of course will entice people to come for the videos and posts. Queso fundido with champiñones, delicious but they only provided 2 small tortillas. Not sure how this is an appetizer. The Trompito de al pastor quesadilla, also lacked, with limited tortillas and only one tortilla having cheese. Not sure how this is a quesadilla. Please note, they do automatically charge you 20% gratuity. They also tried to overcharge on a few items that we did not get so be sure to review the bill. Again, as an experience, it's great. But when you look at the entirety of it all, I was probably better off getting the birthday boy a round trip to Mexico directly. The "value" and "is it worth it" just didn't compare if you are just paying for the music, lights, gimmicks and a flower in your drink.

Yelp
Definitely worth the hype. Love the decor as well as the vibe with music in the background. Had such an amazing time with friends for brunch. Great selection of brunch food and amazing cocktails made fresh in front of you. Chicken and waffles were delicious. Chicken was crispy, tender, and went perfectly well with the waffles, which were soft. Excellent service from start to finish. Will be back for brunch forshure.

Yelp
I went to celebrate my son's promotion. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience! I have never had a cafe de olla like I have had here! Amazing!!!! I highly recommend. Also my niece got chicken nuggets (she's 3) and she found the chicken display great! Service was amazing as well!!

Yelp
Stop with the negative reviews, please...This place is an Excellent, a truly splendiferous outing of food and music. The food is amazing, I'm a fatboy, I know, I don't mind dropping the money, ITS WORTH IT. TOMAHAWK ZARANDEADO, is phenomenal, the tacos dorados are beasty, the enchiladas Rojizas are amazing....Come and enjoy you won't regret it. Make sure it's on payday though, lol

Yelp
Service 7/10 Friendly waiters , they were attentive in fitting our party of 6 vs 5 in . I tried to communicate that there would be another person in our group, prior to my family arriving. This was hard to accomplish since I had to call about 15 times for them to pick up the phone and my family had already arrived by then . Food 5/10 Seems like the cooked meals were good , but the seafood gave me shellfish poisoning and for this reason alone I cannot go back . Drinks 10/10 Maybe come solely for the drinks? we came for mother's day and I was expecting a bit more from this place . The vibes are more club like, than a bistro . Parking 10/10 Final Thoughts : The quality of food does not live up to the price we paid . I've had better and cheaper aguachiles from Northgate that have not made me sick . I'm dead because I really wanted to love it here , but it seems like they are more interested in creating instagram content , rather than creating a good experience for their guests .

Yelp
If you make a reservations be prepared to wait over an hour. My recommendation for management is to work out the reservation process. Be clear on communication and expectations on reservations

Yelp
Top notch service great for girls night out or brunch food is excellent very nice atmosphere too

Yelp
Wow! What a disappointment. We were the only ones in the restaurant and you would think they would treat you better. Just go anywhere else. Beyond overpriced for rude employees.

Tonya G.

Yelp
2 time visiting this location, the service was bad. We were sitting there for about 15 min before anyone came over to our table, and it was not busy at all. We ordered guacamole, and it took about 15-20 minutes before they brought it out. When we ordered our food, the waiter brought it out, I ordered beans rice and shrimp enchiladas, my food was not hot, it was at best warm. The location in Beverly Hills, the service was on point, they were very friendly and welcoming and they waited on us within 5 minutes as the waitress was visibly very busy. Our food was hot and fresh and the taste was on point. I would not recommend anyone from my family and friends going to this location, but the one in BH, yes.

Judith A.

Yelp
What a swank restaurant! I need to go back for dinner. The decor is beautiful. I went for brunch and the service was great! I loved that they brought us slices of fruit and a concha. The orange juice was squeezed table side. The chilaquiles were crisp.

Yelp
Such an amazing place for brunch. My niece and I didn't have to wait long to be seated. Once inside it's like you're in a completely different place. The decor was amazing, food was delicious and the drink presentation was so freakin cute, even what the bill came in was kinda neat. Didn't question the bill, lol.

Yelp
The tomahawk here used to be one of my favorite things in the IE but I came back recently for a celebration and that is no longer the case. The ambience and the taste of the food and drinks went down significantly. They didn't even cook the tomahawk right. My table of two spent $450 and went home disappointed. The saving grace was a live mariachi band and the presentation of the food. Service was just average.

Yelp
It was such a disappointing experience at @mamapordios last night. After reviewing the menu and photos online, I was really excited to try this place out. Sadly, I was terribly let down. I came on a Monday right at 5pm when they opened for dinner. The restaurant inside is quite beautiful and the bar is nicely showcased. Unfortunately, my server did not speak English, and my guest and I really struggled to get our orders in. Someone who speaks English really should have stepped in. For appetizers, I had an aguachiles dish and the ribeye guacamole. The aguachiles were good, but the ribeye was chewy, hard, & like leather. Plus, the guacamole really could have used some salt. I was disappointed at the start of my meal and it just got worse from there. Not even halfway through the appetizers, and our entrées are served. The timing was awful. Our table was covered in dishes from our starters and entrées. I had the camarones rancheros for $32. This consisted of 8 small shrimp and a scoop of rice with a mediocre sauce. The shrimp were lukewarm, and the sauce unremarkable. One of the things I was really excited about was ordering the lobster mac n cheese. I saw online that it's served in the shell of the lobster and looks incredible. However, mine came in an oven friendly cast iron dish. So bummed. I specifically wanted to take a picture for my IG. When it came to dessert, I saw the unicorn cheesecake online, and it was decorated to the T. I wanted to photograph it, not to mention I love cheesecake. When I tried to order it, with much difficulty, my server explained they don't have it anymore. What a bust! Why is it still on the menu?! Lastly, I was looking forward to the check because it's supposed to come in a decorative chest full of Mexican candies. When the chest came with the bill, I opened it up and...EMPTY. No candies. No love. Just an automatic 20% tip included on the bill marked as a "service charge." What service?! This night was one disappointment after another. Apparently, they are "remodeling," and that's why they didn't meet my online expectations and have the things I was looking forward to. Skip this one. You'll thank me.

Yelp
Came here to celebrate my husband's birthday. The music was fun and lively. We got enchilada and meat in skewers. They have 2 margarita for a price of 1 on Mondays so we took advantage of that. Server was very attentive and fast. Overall, we had a great time. Price is on the high side but it's a special occasion so it's all good!
google avatar

Rebeca F.

Yelp
Was there for my birthday. The food tasty, I had the verde cheese enchiladas, a carne asada taco, churro, and flan. The atmosphere was party but way too loud for such a small place. The waitress not very friendly, didn't hear a few of our orders, probably due to the loud music. They sing to you if it's your bday but they use " Happy Bday to you b#*#*, not cool for a 71 year old Christian. I'd probably never go again. Ambiance was great. I twist in Mexican food.

Yelp

Yelp
I love this place it's the perfect place to a nice dinner while enjoying some music. The servers are amazing they put up a show and you will entertain yourself and have an amazing time, food is delicious. The drinks are divine and perfect for pictures. I do recommend you drive to the Rancho Cucamonga location instead of the LA the services is better.

Yelp
How Ridiculous! We have a reservation for Mother's Day and we still have to wait an hour??? What sense does that make?! And look at this crowd of people, how unprofessional of a business. Especially for how expensive this place is, this is very bad. Don't recommend coming here.
google avatar

Monique W.

Yelp
Feels like you walk in to a sports bar competing with a club, giant tv, super loud music, and low lighting. The food was not good, the drinks were watered down, and everything is overpriced considering the la k of quality. You're basically paying for presentation. However, the service was great but not enough to make me want to go back.
google avatar

Debby C.

Yelp
If I could give less than one star, I would! Be forewarned - even on a weekday, there is no lunch menu. You can order brunch, or a handful of very pricey steaks. That's it. We arrived for a noon reservation for a party of six. The place was about half full. There was a lot of staff, but the service was slow and underwhelming. We ordered a few appetizers, which were at best okay, and had some $8 lemonade. For $8, I expect way better. We ate maybe one-third of the appetizers. We ended up leaving and going elsewhere for the balance of our lunch. When we asked politely for our check without even ordering lunch, not a single person working there asked if everything was okay. Which is probably good, because it wasn't.

Yelp
Emilio was the drink runner and was the best hype man! We had so much fun! There was a DJ playing, the ambiance is everything, and even on a Wednesday night they knew how to make it feel like a Friday! I would totally recommend this place for a girls night, birthday, anniversary, and if you want to show your date a good time. It is $$$$ but it was an experience I woke up the next morning still talking about, trying to figure our who's birth was coming up so I can go back! The only con: We were suggested items not listed on menu, and were surprised at how much they were. $48 for 1 table side made drink, $48 for 3 candy shots + $20 for the 'airplane show' fee, and a 20% service charge that is included in the bill. Transparency is everything. BUT would I pay it again??? Yes! Note: I left a bad review 2 years ago, and was really apprehensive to return when my friends suggested it. **It must be under new management ** it had a whole remodel/rebranding because it was a completely different vibe - it's BEAUTIFUL!!! The service was so much better, the music wasn't extremely loud where you have to yell during your table conversation.
google avatar

Megan P.

Yelp
Food here was just average and honestly not worth the price so you're basically paying for a club vibe. Our server was Jessica and she was super nice but unfortunately a bit busy as they seemed understaffed. Overall it was worth a try but we probably won't be back.
google avatar

Yelp
My first time here and it was well worth the money spent! Lets start off by saying how they come around serving shots table side. the atmosphere was just so amazing with the live mariachi band. Our server took our order and said hold on while she was the main singer of the night!! Everyone is sooooo sweet! They give you a stand to hang your purse on so Michael Kors was eating right with me The food was amazing and the drinks are out of this world!! I definitely recommend 10/10. Oh yea the chorizo mac and cheese ....you need to try fareal!!

Yelp
Decided to host my friends bridal shower & this place didn't disappoint. I had 14 ladies & was given a private room. It was perfect considering we still got to enjoy the music but also enjoy each others company HOSTESS: Cat was very sweet was on it. DIANA was extremely responsive & helpful with options for my menu selections.called the day before & she did a wonderful job considering the event was the day after. She was spectacular. Get a hold of her for your next large group event MANNY designated lead was friendly, attentive & high energy. He really did a wonderful keeping the girls interactive and Added the 10 round of shorts per his recommendation . Got a little show which really added a nice touch. FOOD Delish & DRINKS margaritas were on point . All smiles from the group . Had plenty of options for the girls to chose from . The food also came out pretty quick considering our party size . DESSERT - had the churros it came in an order of 4. The churros were a nice size so just enough to share with a few orders of that. It also had 3 different dipping sauces . I thought the presentation was lovely Great for a nice lively experience . Will be back to try out the main dining room . The team handled our large party with ease . Thank you to an amazing experience .

Yelp
Seizure warning!!! I went to Mama Por Dios for a birthday brunch for my sister. The ambiance is really beautiful but they kept turning a strobe light on so that the staff could record a promo video (that's the reason provided by management). While I understand marketing (a have a B.S. in marketing) I don't appreciate a restaurant not taking their customers health into consideration. A strobe light at brunch is not an expected feature by any means and can really be detrimental to someone's health. There should have been a warning sign at the door instead of my sister having to stand in the lobby to avoid her having a seizure in the middle of her meal. The food was sub par and ice cold, but I guess their whole purpose is for insta photos and not cure someone's hunger. The drinks were good but due to sub par service we were never asked if we wanted to order more drinks which is odd because generally a higher check means higher tips. Maybe the server wasn't worried about that today. We won't be back, it's not a safe place for my family and the food and service were terrible.

Yelp
Just wanted to add there was 6 of us spent over $1000, so of course was expecting it to be awesome even the drinks watered down so sorry for this review it was a Sunday and not busy , everyone was saying it was their birthday, you don't get anything but some crazy dancing and loud banging on some drums, every 10 minutes or so , it was very disruptive, it's a confused restaurant, is it a club? A fancy bar? Management needs to reassess even a few of the servers couldn't explain the menu, hope it can survive in the IE in this economy, we are willing to give them a second chance in a few months let's see updated reviews

Yelp
We tried to meet at 4:30 but they recently changed their hours and they don't open until 5 pm. Arrived at 5 pm for our reservation and we were seated promptly and we ordered the Mango mezcal drinks and a carajillo coffee alcoholic drink. We also ordered the corn, queso fundido, birria tacos and chicharrón with guacamole. Everything tasted good and the happy hour pricing was reasonable. I guess we overstayed our welcome because after paying we were asked to leave as we had paid an hour prior and were taking up a table despite having plenty of empty seating. It gets quite loud with the music so when the crowds arrived it is no longer possible to have conversations but if you are looking for a party atmosphere this is for you. Regular pricing on many items is on the high side, so be prepared to pay for this experience. Lots of birthday celebrations.

Yelp
This was our second time in 2 years going here. The place is just fabulously decorated much more to my surprise. Ambiance is something to really take in because most Mexican restaurants I've been to don't seem to have much authenticity that one can appreciate. We ordered the surf and turf with lobster Mac & Cheese, rice, and beans. Steak was delicious, but the lobster was grille but not done right. It was very difficult to extract from the shell, which means it was overcooked. Overall, the food was ok but for the price of this dinner it's not worth it. I could have gone to Market Broiler or Longhorns to get the same order of food at about a third less. As for my 3 stars, there were only 3 handicapped parking I counted. Considering the size of the parking lot, there should be more legally. Semper Fi.....

Yelp
I have nothing nice to say about this place except the good ambiance. The food was nasty, and I don't say that about many places. It is very over priced and the food is unappetizing. They do the most with the food and drink presentation to overcompensate for the bad food. If you're looking for a place like this take a 15-30min drive to Ay Mi Pa in Riverside

Yelp
Let me start off by saying I came here with a group Of 12 to celebrate my birthday. Don't come here to celebrate your birthday unless you want to wait an extra 30min to be seated and charged for $330 for shots we didn't ask for. And spend 30min I made a reservation 3 weeks ahead of time. And we arrived on time. Yet we were seated 30min late. And we were only seated because I asked the manager why we were still waiting, in which he responded, "we're waiting for the rest of your party" to which I replied, the entire party had been here for over 20 minutes. We were finally seated, everything took awhile. Took awhile For someone to take our drink order. Took awhile for someone to take our meal order. At one point someone asked me if there was a birthday in which I replied mine. He then asked if I wanted a shot to celebrate and I said yess. Moments later the staff brought out shots not just for myself but the entire table. 12 of us!!! Not once did they mention we would have to pay for these shots. The way he had asked made it seem complimentary. When checking out they were charging us $330 for the 12 shots. I then spoke to the manager telling him not one single person asked for a shot, the staff brought them to us and didn't even hang them to us, they actually poured it into our mouths themselves. And didn't mention anything about if we were okay with paying for these shots. Idk what to call this?!! False advertising? Trickery? What a way to kill the birthday vibe. Walter thank you for ruining my birthday. And forcing my friends to pay for drinks we didn't ask for Trying to tell us "well you drank them" They pretty much poured the drinks down our throat without actually handing them to us. SMH I'm So disappointed. I wish I would have chosen anywhere else to have my birthday dinner. Aside from waiting 30min to be seated. Our food was cold. Thank you Gustavo for taking it off the bill. But the amount of stress hey caused me on my birthday. Wow. They need to train their staff better to make it clear that shots given for the birthday celebration are not free. Not one person asked for a shot and not one staff member mentioned to us that a shot would have to be paid for. That's how they make there money. No wonder this place is dead. Btw it's 10:55 we have been waiting for 45 minutes to leave but haven't been able to because of this check situation. So disappointed things weren't made clearly to us. It's unfortunate. Was really looking forward to this birthday dinner. Update: Wanted to add that one of my friends told me that when they were bringing the shots around she really did try to decline, she says she held her hand up to say no thank you but they didn't here her and pretty much poured the drink straight to her mouth and she said she was afraid they were going to spill on her so she opened her mouth. She said the shot was so big she couldn't take it all at once and she actually ended up vomiting it up into her other drink. I had seen her leave the table but didn't know why and now I know. And I'm even more upset now. I feel so bad for her and she says she was embarrassed and that's why she left right away.

Yelp
DON'T BOTHER. Beautiful place, beautiful ambience, and nice vibes! That's IT. The service here is rushed. Barely greeted at the door. Still a wait with reservations. Took my mom for Mothers Day and it's so underwhelming. Not only for the price but just period. You server rushes you through your meals and drinks to keep up with their 90min cue. The food is TASTELESS. Better meals at El Toronto for a Quarter of the price. You're honestly paying for them to keep this place open and the servers BBLS and Veneers. They do not care about their customers or the quality of their food. We came for their "performance" which really isn't much at all at this location but them shimmying a plate to a table with sparklers. Save your money and just go to a longer and eat at El Torito. The lobster mac and cheese was dry. Drinks have 1% of alcohol. The enchiladas are all tortilla. Prices are RIDICULOUS.

Yelp
Came here on a Monday night with an open mind after seeing a lot of mixed reviews here. Its a nice restaurant with a very unique atmosphere inside. We only had to wait a few minutes to be seated. It's very loud inside, and the music is played much louder than most places. If you're looking for a quiet night out, this is not the place. While we were here we counted 10, yes TEN, separate birthdays parties. It felt like 5 minutes each table there was having a birthday. So again, place is loud, not relaxing, but if you're into that this is your place. After a few minutes we were able to order our drinks. While we waited for our drinks a different waitress came by and asked us if we would like water, we said yes. After we got our cocktails, we were brought out two glasses and two bottles of water. We were asked by both our waitresses if we'd like an appetizer and we declined, but it was very obvious the staff here is supposed to upsell as much as possible. We ordered our meals, and our waitress asked if we'd like rice and beans. We said sure, but noticed the menu did not state if the entrees came with sides or not. It also did not state if sides were extra. We got our meals and the food is good. For my taste $14 per enchilada was very over priced for we got. You're getting enchiladas with some unique sauces that are about 5 bites each. So buyer beware. The tacos were good. $7 each good? I'm not sure. The cocktails were all very, very good. Especially the Carajillo which was above and beyond better than the other drinks we had. I'm leaving a 2 star review overall for a couple reasons. 1) charging $4 for a bottle of water? Seriously? Water should be complimentary or at least advertise that water isn't free. So that was BS. 2) charging $10 for a small plate of rice & beans? This is insane, and again NOT advertised or shown on the menu. 3) the service was ok. Not great just ok. Having to wait for what felt like forever to flag down a waitress to ask for our check when our drinks were empty and our table cleared for 10-15 minutes isn't fun. With tip this came out to $180. For two people. Obviously the cocktails is half the bill so I get it. At the end of the day it's Mexican good. How fancy and pricey can you get? I can go to a dozen hole in the wall places and get 4 margaritas, tacos, and enchiladas for half this. If you're into overpriced Mexican food, loud music over 100 decibels, and good drinks this is your place.

Yelp
SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY Theres a reason this place does not even have a 3 star average. Dont waste your time or your money!!! Go to RED O's Mortons go to Javiers, Barton G's or even Fleming's down the street at VG. Just another money landering restaurant front for the owner , over hyped and over priced. Don't fall for the gimmick of their fun and fancy videos they post of this place. This restaurant is definatly all hype and doesnt know if it wants to be an upscale restaurant or a some kind of night bar or maybe night club ? Sure the decorations are ok but if they focused less on the asthetics and more on the quality of food and the flavor this place would be much better. Reservations are not respected which was the first red flag for me. Literally treat you based on appearance. So dress to impress. People arriving after us dressed like they were going out clubbing walked right in while my party and others had been waiting outside most of us with reservations. Granted we were dressed up but definaly not in mini dresses and stripper heels. Second red flag was when are waiter came to our table a few of us still had not decided on our drinks so we asked for water, they bring out water bottles that were 8 dollars each for. I have been to high end restaurants and never have i been charged for water, matter of fact i think its against the law to not provide free water. Food is not the greatest, nothing comes with sides... what kind of Mexican restaurant doesn't include rice and beans with their meals? And dont forget to check your bill at the end, they will add things you did not order on top of their automatically added 20% gratuity. The value of what you receive vs the price is just not worth it in my opinion. I dont mind spening money on a good plate and decent service but this for me was neither.

Yelp
At arrival I was told my reservation didn't secure me a table at the time I selected only a spot on the waitlist and that I would be waiting an hour- not the best first impression. That happened to coincide with the time the kitchen took a break between brunch and dinner so we either had to rush to order or wait additional time because the kitchen doesn't start dinner until a certain time. Our server at one point told us we could not order because the kitchen was no longer doing brunch but then minutes later allowed us to. She was courteous but could've checked on the table a bit more. The food was decent...not sure if it was worth the price though. The kitchen messed up/swapped the requested egg/meat combination on 2 plates and we had to basically reconstruct them at our table. Kudos for the cute plate of pan dulce. Visually, the ambience is great, but it is BEYOND LOUD in there. Great place to go to if you don't want to talk to who you're there with or if you're into yelling at people. The mini shows/parades with drinks was entertaining but felt somewhat excessive when they started to come out every 5 minutes. Not bad overall... but not exactly itching to return.

Yelp
Went there for brunch, such a cool and lively place lots of Mexican history with some characters I grew up watching on Spanish TV. The service was good; The ambience was so lively they play music and if it's your birthday they have a DJ that plays music and they make it all about you and they come sing to you, they also bring you a slice of cheesecake.. the only thing I would say is that mixed green salad that came with my birria Benedict, I would ask for the dressing on the side. They drenched my salad with dressing so it was a lil too sweet & a bit much for me. The bathroom is really cool and they have extra things in case you need them which is always a great idea! Definitely will return!
