"Mamacita’s Taqueria is a locally-owned family business operating since 2004. Located in downtown Asheville, this made-from-scratch restaurant is a local treasure for those looking for a quick lunch bite. No visit is complete without trying the birria burrito loaded with tender shredded beef, cheese, onion, and cilantro." - Lyndsay Cordell

Loved this authentic Mexican spot right in the heart of downtown Asheville. Counter service. Very reasonable and seriously incredible flavors. Tried everything from Birria, Chicken, Shrimp & Steak tacos to a burrito bowl & nachos. So good. Bonus is that they offer beers and specialty drinks. Easy for quick meal. So good that there may be a line. (Right next door to Wicked Weed Brewery)

Google
I really enjoy their vegetarian burritos. I'm hooked on the plantain and avocado one. The meats are all too greasy, so I avoid adding any of those to my meals here. The yucca fries with queso are delicious. They're thick, properly fried chunks of yucca. It's a bit of a pricy item though, however, some menu items are a bit high. The quesadilla is disappointing as it costs more than some of the burritos, and they use smaller tortillas. Just a heads up: go to the website for a good description of each menu item. The chalkboard in the restaurant doesn't have the room for it.

Google
Wowww, amazingggg food here. The flavors are amazing and so delicious. Staff was so welcoming and the dining area was very clean. Love how affordable it is too! Will definitely be coming back!☺️

Google
Place was busy but the staff was cranking! Guy was immediately friendly and nice when first getting to the window! All the staff was nice and working hard! They made the tortillas fresh in front of you as well as cooked the meat to order! Excellent set up and by the time you pay your drink is ready at the bar! The quality, flavor and portions of the food are incredible, I ordered three tacos but next time will get two they are that well packed! Excellent experience here! If you need to eat before going to the Orange Peel this is convenient also!

Google
Great tacos in casual / dive setting. I had the birria tacos and also ground beef. A little messy but really good and the load up the tacos, you won’t leave hungry. Reasonably priced, downtown Asheville location. Cheap paid parking right across the street ($4)

Google
For 18 years I have driven by this place and today I decided to give them a try. Food is delicious. They put love into this food cuz you can definitely taste it.!!! (Beware though that portions are a bit small for big eaters, I asked for extra for the picture). Employees are friendly and kind. Will definitely keep coming back.

Google
They have great burrito bowls!! Went there several times over my stay.

Google
Mamacita's catered my daughters Asheville wedding. Cannot say enough good things about them. Excellence from start to finish. The manager, Lisa is so sweet and knowledgeable about catering. Took time to explain everything and answer all questions patiently. Food was affordable, delicious and was easy to have guests serve themselves. 100% satisfied!!

Yelp
Hands down the best carnitas, chips and queso I've had in my life. The queso has some type of flavor that I couldn't put my finger on but LOVED. I'm a Mexican cuisine lover and margarita connoisseur. Because the food was so good, I was afraid to try a margarita for fear I'd risk ruining a great dinner! We headed around the corner to Limones after for a margarita and dessert. Highly recommend splitting your date up that way.

Alissa W.

Yelp
Wow I wish they had good mexican thats authentic like this in S Fl. Everything was so fresh and tasty. I stopped in for a snack and got a black bean and rice burrito with all fresh toppings. Service was fast and friendly and the place at 2:00 was packed!

Yelp
Visiting Asheville for a birthday celebration and we decided on Mexican for dinner. We chose Mamacita's because it looked like a fresh option for food. This is similar to Chipotle' where you walk in and ask of burritos, bowl or tacos. I did a grilled chicken burrito bowl, my daughter had a beef bowl, my wife had a shrimp taco and my son a carnitas burrito. We all were very happy with our choices! I had pico de gallo, cilantro, cotija cheese, lettuce, with black beans and Spanish rice. All of my food was seasoned well. Beans and rice were tasty on their own. The gentleman preparing our bowls was very friendly and smiling while putting our bowls together. He moved quickly along with the young lady adding our toppings. You get plenty of food in your bowls I will definitely return to try their fish taco with slaw and twist of lime.

Adam K.

Yelp
Excellent food at very good prices! I got the carne burrito and it was amazing. They add chips or salsa for $0.75 which was a steal. Really delicious option!

Suzanne T.

Yelp
Cleanest bathrooms in the South! Also delicious food and smiling faces. Parking is sketchy use the Aloft garage

Teresa Davancaze ..

Yelp
Barria queso tacos are amazing. Also ordered the avocado taco that contains black beans and sweet potato. Love how you can choose your own toppings for tacos and burritos. The inside is cozy with fun Latino music.

Eun L.

Yelp
In town for a bike event and looking for a light snack to hold us over until our dinner. Looking at our taco taco options, glad I chose this one. You order and go down the line where you pick your toppings. Service was good enough. Nothing to complain about. I ordered a carne asada and a shrimp taco on a flour tortilla. My husband ordered two grilled fish tacos. They have lots of yummy toppings to choose from; I had a hard time deciding. I got the pico, arugula, cilantro and a little raw onions. Husband chose cheese, cilantro, pico, pickled onions, shredded lettuce and lime. They squeezed the lime on the taco for him. We added chips and salsa for .75 cents. As ordered to go, they put a scoop of the chips directly in the paper bag with a small container of salsa. They have Coca Cola in small glass bottles. I ordered a Diet Coke, which came in a plastic to go container. They fry their own tortillas. We could also see the big chunks of beef cooking on their grill. They looked great! It's a little dim inside. Nothing special about the decor. There's a bar in the back. Decent amount of seating: half booth tables and counter type seating inside and outside by the front window of the restaurant. They also have a few tables outside. I did think the tacos were a bit pricey. However, they did taste great. And they are generous with the proteins and the toppings. The shrimp were cooked well, very tender and flavorful. As you can choose from so many toppings, you could have a different flavor with the same protein. The steak was flavorful as well. Lots of meat and toppings. Tried a piece of the fish from my husbands taco. The fish was taken off the grill at the right moment. Not a bit over cooked. I was impressed. I really enjoyed the salsa. It was thicker in consistency, which I like, and it had a deep flavor. I don't like the gourmet tacos with all kinds of flavors mixed in that you find in alot of places these days. But these still offered a lot of flavor with the various topping choices and sauces. If we lived in the area, I would def be a regular here.

Kendra L.

Yelp
We are vegetarian and my husband has food allergies to garlic and onions. This makes eating out difficult. We stopped in here, looked at the menu and they quickly offered to grill some shrimp for him without seasoning to make shrimp tacos for him (he eats seafood when out and has no other option). They were fantastic about making sure he was well fed and could eat safely. On top of that he said it was the best meal he's eaten out in a long time. This is high praise. My nachos were so filling I couldn't finish them. I thought about stuffing myself, they were that good. Too bad this restaurant is about a 9.5 hour drive from home or we would be back! The inside is clean and simple yet welcoming! I highly recommend swinging by! (I just added the photos and my mouth started watering at the picture of my nachos!!!).

Michael B.

Yelp
Mamacita's is almost great food. They make flour tortillas in house, marinade their meats very well, and have solid salsa. They assemble your food like Chipotle or Subway in that you can order specific cheeses and veggies to be added at the station after you order. The problem is the ingredients don't mix well. The taste is very separated so you'll never get a satisfying full bite of everything. The prices are also very expensive. You're paying a premium based on their location. However, you'll always find locals and blue collar workers eating here which is perfect.

Lilliana C.

Yelp
Wish I lived in Asheville so I could come here more often! The restaurant is set up similar to Chipotle where you are able to DIY your own burrito/bowl/tacos/etc. So the service is quick, the food is fresh, and the options are plentiful. Mamacita's also had a full bar, making it a great spot to hang out and have a drink.

Madden P.

Yelp
Amazing, cheap food and really nice employees. The plantains go crazy and there are $10 giant margaritas

Sami H.

Yelp
Hands down one of my favorite places to visit! Stopped by tonight with my mom and I had the chicken burrito and my mom had the pork carnitas burrito. This is the best place in Asheville for FRESH and DELICIOUS food! The staff is always smiling and friendly and the place is always packed! Thank you Mamacitas for always having the best food around!

Jonna Leanne P.

Yelp
great customer service immediately! From the beginning of the visit making my order until the end when I cashed out, I felt like a local even though I was from out of town. The prices were fair! The taco size was great IMO and tasty! The queso had an interesting favor, it was definitely good, just different. I loved the red salsa I received and the chips were great - and served fresh! The place was clean and plenty of different style seating. Don't recommend this for a large sit down group but more of an in and out place!

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Best food, service and price hands down. The Pork tacos and plantains are amazing. Great service and such a value for the price. I'm glad we stumbled upon this place. We will definitely be back.

David N.

Yelp
Food is very good quality, fast, and has great flavor. In a world where there is a chipotle on every block, skip out on the chains and come here instead. Best queso in Asheville hands down. 4 stars because the churros here are an abomination, absolutely 0 cinnamon and ALL sugar. But otherwise arrrrrriba

Cipriana A.

Yelp
Food was good, Jamaica was too bitter The options for food are decent. Clean place & friendly customer service. Minimal parking.

Jo j.

Yelp
Like Chipotle only better absolutely love the nachos these and surprisingly they're quite fulfilling

Caroline J.

Yelp
Amazing fish taco with great fresh ingredients! Just needed a snack to hold me over and this was right down the road. I got a flour tortilla with fresh pico, lettuce, and cilantro with chipotle ranch and the fried fish. The fried fish was freshly fried and two large pieces, and there was a lot of great toppings. If I have more time in the area, I would love to come back and try other items as I love how everything was so fresh!

O R.

Yelp
The birria tacos was very good, the consomé could be place on a larger cup to dip the tacos.

Allison M.

Yelp
This place has been a staple for years. Next to the orange peel, the location is great for pre concert or street walking downtown. The staff are friendly and the ordering is seamless. In the last few years, this place has seen a serious glam Up. I really miss the old school dive-y fee but I'm happy to see a more chic option too. The prices surely went up with the glam up. The salad, while delicious, is not cheap. Honestly the per taco price is a lot too. They charge for everything- extra handful of chips is .75. The salad was good but not a lot of protein. The dressing and greens felt fresh though. Great queso but the small is quite small (not that you need a lot). Nice seating and bathrooms. Clean place and a wonderful on the go meal that is quick but tastes slow made.

Sofia R.

Yelp
Friendly sr and good service Little expensive Food is good but not impressed... La comida es buena pero no me impresiona no es la mejor pero nos salva la vida porque en esa área no hay nada

Dean W.

Yelp
Best pork burrito I've had in awhile- everything's made fresh in front of you and its authentic Mexican - not lame Chipotle

Lori K.

Yelp
Best Mexican food in Asheville! Always fresh, well prepared and flavorful. Great selection of proteins and veggies. The fish in the Baja fish tacos is fried perfectly. Chipotle chicken was a great addition to a quesadilla. Street corn was amazing! Everyone is friendly and helpful. Space is clean, including the bathrooms. Always a stop while we're in Asheville.

Zachary H.

Yelp
I love this place! Great locally owned Mexican food very reasonably priced. Give it a try!

Don T.

Yelp
Excellent food, excellent service, ambiance is fine...fresh ingredients served up by a really good staff that's not metering out the portions like it was gold...I've eaten there multiple times when I was in Asheville and it's always really good...I go every time I'm in town...highly recommended...

Yelp
After a long drive up from Florida my wife and I were starving. We came across Mamacita's and it looked promising. The location didn't lend itself to an easy visit though. It seems like it is located on a fairly busy street with lots of traffic. We came around 7PM and it was busy. We didn't wait too long before starting our order. We got the Adobo Chicken burrito, chips and salsa, and some horchata. The horchata was really tasty, but I think it should come in 16oz. I think the horchata comes in a 12oz cup with a lot of ice so you don't get much. The chips were tasty, but the salsa is more pico de gallo than a salsa. That doesn't make it bad, just not really what you expect when you order salsa. The burritos were tasty and I ended up saving half for breakfast the next day. The staff is friendly and the restaurant seemed fairly clean. I would definitely come back, but likely wouldn't order the salsa or horchata again. I also appreciated the nice beer selection although I didn't drink. Overall I liked the food and think another visit may help uncover some tasty items.

Suzanne M.

Yelp
I come to Asheville about once a year and I end up going here at least twice on my visits. The food is soooo good! We always order online and drive by and pick it up to go, so we don't have to worry about parking. I love all the toppings you can get on their burrito, or burrito bowl, which is what I get. I am dairy-free, and they have cashew crema and other delightful unique toppings. Love love love the fried plantains. High quality food, generous portions. Our favorite place in Asheville!

Colette H.

Yelp
Delicious. Fresh. Fast. Great value. Friendly staff. My number one favorite spot for a great go to meal that will keep you full!

Vivek S.

Yelp
I ordered takeout for pickup for dinner and the process was incredibly smooth. They have a devoted parking spot for pickup orders and my burrito was hot and fresh when I picked it up. I ordered the plantain and pork burrito and let me just say this was one of the best burritos I've ever had. The value was also incredible because it was only 11 dollars and the burrito could have easily fed me for two meals. The pork and plantain combo was absolutely fantastic. Also like prior reviews mention get the marinated vegetables. They're in this oregano based marinade which is quite nice. The flavor in this burrito was so well balanced with the sweetness of the plantains, the savory pork, the rich Baja sauce, and the tang of the veggies.

Emma D.

Yelp
Delicious food, amazing service, and great prices for the quantity. I always get the burrito bowl (best bang for ya buck)!! My boyfriend and I met here, and it's one of our favorite places to eat.

Lexie B.

Yelp
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE. i have lived in asheville for 18 years and only just had this food for the first time a few moths ago. The community the service, the people, and staff are so NICE my experience was wonderful, and the food was so good, so many choices and the queso is amazing.

Michael B.

Yelp
BOMB!!!!! THIS IS A 5 STAR BOMB REVIEW. in a town that has so many places to eat crammed into every place possible this amazing little Mexican food is a hidden gem. The Chicken Taco was large and in charge with so much flavor. But wait the Birria Queso Taco..... with NC sourced beef... I could eat this every day!!!! The Boss got the steak Quesadilla and a spicy Margarita both are some of the best she has had... That says a lot as she tries both at almost every Mexican restaurant we go. So Asheville run.. do not walk to this amazing hidden gem.. MUCHO Gracias!!!

Whitney S.

Yelp
Food is quick and fresh! You essentially order off the food bar and made to order right in front of you (the protein). Burritos are just the right size and chips and salsa come for a minimal up charge. Staff was super friendly however the only downside to the visit was that we ordered a diet coke and paid for it. The person we paid went over to the drink bar and there wasn't diet coke or any diet drinks for that matter and we had already paid for the drink so settled for a sprite. :) Otherwise cute little place and super quick!

Natalye R.

Yelp
We came here on our last night in Asheville to meet a friend because we wanted something quick and easy. I wanted the avocado plantain burrito but there were out of plantain, so I settled for the veggie mama burrito made vegan. The food came quickly enough and it was good. The kale in my burrito was an interesting touch; I only wish it had been cut into smaller pieces because it was hard to eat with whole leaves in there. The sweet potato was awesome. My kid isn't into Mexican food these days so opted for chips and rice, and they were a hit. All in all, the food was good for what it was. If I lived in Asheville I'd probably come here occasionally.

Sasha G.

Yelp
We loved this place! I got gazpacho which was huge and delicious! My boyfriend got a burrito and I couldn't even get a bite of it since it was so good. We also shared chips and guacamole which were awesome--the chips were freshly made and the guac was a great size and really yummy. It's a nice, quick, tasty meal for a good price. Would recommend and will return when we're back in Asheville!

Alan W.

Yelp
The Asheville food scene is crazy good. And Mamacita's Taqueria (MT) is part of the reason. I've visited many restaurants that offer "assemble-in-front-of-you-burritos". After awhile they're all the same & predictable. MT however stands out from the pack. I ordered an adobo chicken burrito & I'm still smacking my lips from its deliciousness. The burrito was huge & filling & unbelievably tasty. Along with the marinated adobo chicken, the burrito was stuffed with rice, beans, cheese, arugula, pico, tomatillo sauce, chipotle sauce, & lime. The burrito was off the taste chart. I loved it & want more.

Alexandra S.

Yelp
Mamacita's had been my favorite burrito spot for years but something changed once they opened taco temple. Don't get me wrong, mamacitas is still a good spot, I just never find myself going there anymore but I stopped in for a taco while I was downtown by myself recently. I'm not a fan of the flour tortillas they use, it's like the street taco size and is way too small for the amount of filling they give you. It's a lot of food but I'd prefer a normal sized tortilla. I ordered the avocado taco and was a little surprised it came with sweet potatoes, I don't think it says on the menu board that's they way it comes. It wasn't a big deal, I like sweet potatoes, just wasn't something I expected. I grabbed one of their pint margaritas and grabbed a seat outside. My meal cost me $20 after tip, granted I got an alcoholic beverage, but for one taco and a drink that's definitely more than an average lunch.

Anna Claire M.

Yelp
This restaurant was absolutely immaculate. Not only was the queso INCREDIBLE but the tacos were decadent. I was left satisfied and full and happy. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Thuha N.

Yelp
No fuss bites. We got soup, quesadilla, and a few tacos. The soup was simple yet tasty, and it was hot both temperature and taste. The quesadilla was great, served with a generous portion of crunchy and fresh nacho chips. The tacos has unlimited toppings, including guacamole!

Stacy S.

Yelp
Mamacita's is a great place to get a good meal to go. Always fresh ingredients, tasty and generous!Since the pandemic the menu is limited but certainly not lacking in variety. Having said that, I seem to always get a burrito. Pulled pork burritos are soooo good and because they're so big, I always have a lunch for the next day! My hubby gets the steak burrito and loves it! We get salsa and chips as well and for two people it's all we can do to enjoy half of what they give us. This last time I was curious and ordered the cauliflower taco to share. It was stuffed full and the flavor was good. I was surprised that the cauliflower was crunchy but enjoyed it for something completely different. I have never dined in at Mamacitas but would definitely recommend this place as a take out option.

Maggie F.

Yelp
I think this is the first Yelp review I've ever written but WOW! Best nachos ever! Build your own and doused in the most delicious queso ever!! My husband got steak tacos and they gave him a serious serving of steak - he was a happy camper. House margaritas were amazing too. Definitely would recommend and will come back.

Kara M.

Yelp
We popped into this cute little spot around 4 PM on a Friday, it wasn't TOO crowded at that time. We were quickly greeted and placed our order. We paid at the counter and then grabbed a table while we waited for our food. I'd describe this place as a non-chain version of a Moe's or Chipotle. The menu has a lot of tacos, burritos, tortas and quesadillas. This is probably a good spot to come with vegetarians as they had a few veggie options. In addition to food, there are also beer and margaritas available. We each had a margarita, I'd say they were average when it comes to taste. Food was fresh and tasty. Interior decor was charming with some fun Mexican accents.

Scotty C.

Yelp
I went to a wedding at Highland Brewing and Mamacita's was the caterer... yes, taco bar at a wedding! Honestly, if they next wedding I'm invited to doesn't have a taco bar, I don't want it. The staff were super friendly and efficient. They followed covid protocols in place at the time too. Most importantly, the food was excellent! I kept going down the line and adding more to my taco platter. The pork was my favorite but the chicken was great too. The had hot sauces, queso, and all the fixins so I made a plate of nachos next. I ended up eating way to much and went into a deep food coma afterwards. While I wasn't able to get my groove on to the electric slide with the taco to bodyweight ratio, I have no regrets for gorging on this taco bar.

Matt C.

Yelp
We hit the motherload at Mamacita's Taqueria. I've walked by this Biltmore Ave. spot a dozen times during my Asheville stints, but never thought to have walked in. Wow, we struck gold here! This place has been open for over a decade. I'm surprised that the Asheville community hasn't shown them more love on Yelp via photos and reviews. I know, I know. There's a more well known taco shop in town. In all honesty, Mamacita's takes the cake. Oddly enough, it's an assembly line concept. Order at the counter, choose your ingredients, pay at the end of the line. The bang for your buck here is unprecedented. They fill your plate like it's your last meal. Chorizo Poblano and Carnitas Tacos -- freakin' delicious on so many levels. Corn tortillas, juicy tender meat, handfuls of diced white onion and cilantro, doused in hot sauce. These are how the taco pioneers intended tacos to be eaten. Flavors were bouncing all around my mouth like a pinball machine. Plus, the guac was first rate. Salsa bar has all the accoutrements your lil' heart desires. Although I didn't drink, they appeared to have tons of drink specials, including big ass beers. Only negative was the overall cleanliness of the restaurant. Yeah it's a personal pet peeve, but these tacos were L I F E, so I'm letting it slide. Serious eats on the cheap in the heart of Downtown Asheville.

Gustavo Z.

Yelp
It has potential but, What I didn't like is the tortillas, the tortillas are the same ones you get at the supermarket and those tortillas are not that good at all, the green salsa is okay.

Michael G.

Yelp
This is a clone of Chipotle. You know lot of metal vats to scoop hours' old meats and toppings onto an oversized tortilla that all falls apart at table. Boring to the point of. Not going back. But itdid have margaritas --pricey for the Blanco more so for reposado or top shelf distilled agaves In sum, too boring to ever spend another precious hour there. At least Chipotle tortillasdo not fall apart Learn to roll a tight one folks.

Chris S.

Yelp
I won't comment about parking since I walked there from two blocks away. Like many places in Asheville, park where you can and be happy if it's only a couple blocks walk. Walking in, you are about five feet from the ordering line. There is a menu posted on a lectern to the right. It gives a good description of the various items. There is another menu on the wall behind the ordering line, but the one by the door worked better for me. They assemble you order as you go down the line. The staff is efficient and friendly. I ordered the pulled pork carnitas burrito. Black beans, rice, and pork form the base. I added pico de gallo, cucumbers, radishes, cilantro, and onion and a chipolte salsa. Everything on the line looked fresh. The burrito is wrapped in foil. Don't unwrap the whole thing to eat it. Unwrap a little at a time. They pack the tortilla full, so even while wrapped, prepare to get messy. All ingredients tasted as fresh as they looked. The pork was flavorful, moist, and delicious. There was enough added to get some in every bite. I was stuffed when I finished it. There is a salsa bar near the drink machine. They had three types, the chipolte, a tomatillo base (both mild) and an orange arbole. The last was warm, but nothing was real spicy. All had excellent flavor. I really enjoyed my first visit here, and expect to come back to try more items from the menu.

Farrell P.

Yelp
Fresh and tasty Mexican food served with a smile. The Carne Asada was the standout in our meal. I added their lime vinaigrette to my citrus chicken burrito for extra zing. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options, including fried plantains, sweet potatoes and cashew crema,

Camryn R.

Yelp
If you go to Asheville, you have to go to Mamacita's! My sister and I were Asheville for the weekend and we literally ate here twice (once for a snack and once for an actual meal). It's like a chipotle-style restaurant, but that's where the comparison ends. Everything is fresh and is so delicious. We got grilled chicken tacos and nachos - all of it was amazing. 10/10 recommend!

Nora O.

Yelp
YUM!!! Counter service tacos, quesadillas, burritos and more. really delicious!! Make absolutely sure to get yourself a churro and a birria taco!! best ever. 5 stars.
