"Brandon Jew, well-loved for his groundbreaking Chinatown restaurant Mister Jiu’s, launched his fast-casual spin-off in 2020 as a place for mahjong and book clubs over bowls of well-made sweet-and-sour chicken and jade fried rice. The Noe Valley outpost has a pleasant parklet, a quirky vibe, and lots of natural light for any spur-of-the-moment lunch dates." - Paolo Bicchieri, Becky Duffett

We drove up here from the South Bay with a friend to eat here after seeing a video on Instagram about their Double Happiness meal (fancy fried fish sandwich with caviar). We arrived at 11:30AM, and were surprised that immediately thereafter two other parties entered too. A good sign for a place to have a solid contingent of customers right when it opens. We ordered the aforementioned Double Happiness meal, sweet and sour chicken rice plate, tingly fried chicken sandwich combo with hot and sour soup, jasmine tea soda, and pineapple tonic water. The sandwich was quite good, it’s too bad we live so far!

Google
Their mushroom mapo tofu is amazing!! Such a balance of Sichuanese flavors! You can do a combo with a house special, some rice and a salad for a more balanced meal. I liked their chamomile tea and didn’t enjoy the Sichuan Strawberry Tea(it had a whole lot of unique flavors, I just couldn’t get into it).

August 2024: Updating review. Food is still very good. Had the broccoli 🥦 beef and a salad. September 2023: Stopped by for lunch and ordered the beef and broccoli, the garlic tomato 🍅 chow mein, the mapo tofu with pork, and the chrysanthemum salad. Everything was very tasty. I thought the chow mein was unique with the garlic added. Mapo tofu was solid. Chrysanthemum salad had good dressing. Would definitely order everything again. Service was warm and friendly. Would definitely come back again.

Google
Sweet and sour chicken was outstanding. The place is a little pricey but tasty. Limited seating makes dining in a problem when it’s raining. Also, wouldn’t hurt the female cashier to be slightly friendly to customers JM2C. In contrast, shout out to Alex who was super nice and friendly recommending his favorites on the menu. Cheers!

Google
as an asian i thought the food was authentic and i enjoyed the meal. we ordered the cabbage salad, mapo tofu with pork and lazi ji, and a side of rice. for two, the portions were big and we left very full and satisfied. i’d come back again for the lazi ji which was so crispy and fried to perfection, and maybe the chicken sandwich.

Google
Good Chinese food, a classic sweet and sour chicken, we got it as a rice plate which came with a small lotus root salad as well which was tasty. Some unique fried chicken sandwiches in pineapple buns, we had the Super Savory. While tasty, couldn't really taste the porcini-dust on top, though you could see it. The service was super friendly, help yourself to water on the side. Very ♿ accessible with buttons at foot height, counters are low. The booths not so accessible but there is a side of the restaurant where it's a booth against the wall and a chair that can be moved on the other.

Google
Interesting experience. The food is good, never have i ever ordered a fried chicken sando with a side of hot and sour soup. The chicken sandwich itself was the Hawthorne. It tastes like a big McDonalds chicken nugget sandwich; and not in a bad way. But also not a super impressive chicken sandwich. Not sure i'd come here again but it was okay for $18 in SF

Google
Great Chinese food from the Michelin star chef of Mr Jiu. But this is a budget fast food chain that offers great tasting, and authentic chinese food, at a very reasonable price that is accessible to everyone.

Yelp
Always heard about this place but never was able to go, until now! Wow I would definitely go back! Service here was great and friendly! Loved all the colors in the decor, bowls and cups. Food was great here. Husband always gets the sweet and sour friend chicken plate, I decided to get the beef and broccoli plate and the lotus salad was so yummy! Everything was delicious and felt healthier and fresh! Really loved my bowl and chopsticks to add a pop of color as I ate. I also highly recommend the chrysanthemum blood orange tea, it was so light and refreshing! Never had grass jelly until I got this drink, which doesn't taste like much. My kids got the chicken kids meal which was perfect and reasonably priced. I would come here again!

Yelp
Love their spicy fried chicken sandwich and the combo meal combining that with hot and sour soup. This more casual outpost from Mr. Jiu's award-winning chef and SF native Brandon Jew is great for families and more everyday-meals. The chicken sandwich is juicy and served on great pineapple bread. It's unique and tasty. The hot and sour soup and mapo tofu dishes are solid, but I'd come here mainly for their chicken sandwich. Inside is bright and airy. They also partner with other local businesses--loved their Jewsian red bean black sesame babka they made and sold with Loquat in Hayes Valley.

Yelp
I've been avoiding this place because I'd heard less than favorable reviews, but wanted to give them a chance. Tonight I stopped in for a to go order of Mushroom and Tofu potstickers. When they were ready a man came out, said my name and handed me the bag and I left. I got home...no utensils, Not even a napkin. That was the first unusual thing. Second, the potstickers themselves were pretty terrible. They were hard, like overbaked Totino's Pizzarolls and the sauce that they came with was a slightly spicy sweet and sour type sauce, not at all what normally comes with potstickers, and the to go container was loaded with whole chilis. Weird. I won't be back.

Yelp
3.5 stars. Mamahuhu is a modern Chinese-American restaurant with strong flavors! I thought the dishes were small portions and overpriced. FOOD [3.5/5] ========= + Tingly Spicy Chicken Sandwich [4/5] Not tingly but the chicken was really tender and great portion size. I really liked the pineapple bread, which was more unique than anything I've seen in a chicken sandwich. Not enough sauce IMO. + Hot & Sour Soup [4/5] A classic take on hot and sour soup-- was just a little cold and lacking of goodies. + Lazi Chicken [3.5/5] I thought this tasted okay-good but felt more like a small portion of spicy chicken nuggets.

Crystal H.

Yelp
If you're having a problem choose between Chinese food and a sandwich LOOK NO FURTHER MAMAHUHU IS HERE! Any of their sandwich options are to die for! Today I tried the Spicy Tingy and honestly it wasn't that spicy but nonetheless it was delicious! Besides sandwiches they also have soup, noodle, and rice options that are all decently priced. Definitely give this place a try if you've been meaning to or if this sounds like your type of food!!!

Yelp
I'm a little picky when it comes to Chinese food. Nothing beats what my Mom or grandma or aunties would cook. So eating out at Chinese restaurants can turn me into a bit of critic. More often than not, I feel like Chinese restaurant food is doused in MSG. Considering I'm MSG sensitive, let's just say I'm a bit allergic to it, I appreciate restaurants that don't use or are able to adjust to leave out or lessen the MSG. Food needs to be about the natural ingredients in the dishes, not about how it can be enhanced or covered with saltiness. What was a newer concept for me was high quality food but fast casual style. I like this place! Authentic Chinese with fresh ingredients go far in my book. I'm also open to fusion as long as it is done well. And Mamahuhu does it well. We ordered the Super Savory chicken sandwich, Mapo Tofu with pork, Broccoli and mushrooms, hot and sour soup, Sweet and Sour chicken. This was all served up family style to appease a table of 4, plus one unexpected friendly guest that suddenly showed up to join us. The Super savory sandwich was somehow satisfying. We split one into 4. Chinese food and sandwich are rarely combined in the same phrase so this was the fusion portion of our meal. The chicken was moist and crispy. And what made this is a beautiful visit was that I came dine here with two childhood friends, one of whom I hadn't seen in over 30 year. And extra fun was unexpectedly running into her friend who also came from our hometown. Reunions with great food always makes for an amazing night! I can't wait to come back here! And I'm going to bring friends! Yum-O!

Yelp
Mamahuhu always gets it right! The food is warm and fresh. The service is quick and kind. I leave full and happy every time!

Yelp
Fast friendly service Ordered online for pick up. Food was decent. The winner was definitely the chicken sandwich. The snow jasmine drink was refreshing and I didn't expect to enjoy the carbonation. :D Not expensive And not cheap. Thank you!

Yelp
i really wanted to love mamahuhu and i think they get a lot of attention because it's a mister jiu's spinoff but I think that there's a broader more interesting cultural question about the role of chinese food in american cuisine / what good chinese food is / what AUTHENTIC chinese food is. mamahuhu is great for what it is but honestly I think you should come here for the cafe / diner style eats, which are the fried chicken sandwich, the drinks, and the dessert. I got the blood orange chrysanthamum which was great but a little overpriced. the great part is that it functions as a cafe (with wifi and outlets and big tables) so when it's empty, its good for that

André N.

Yelp
They have the American Chinese food that delivers well down to a science. A number of gluten free and kid friendly options too. The MSG was my surprise favorite. I ordered with the sauce on the side and everything was really crisp when it was delivered via Uber eats.

Yelp
Ooof. I can hear Uncle Roger crying all the way from Malaysia with this one. I rarely do review updates unless I have a really bad return visit, like this... When the sweet & sour cravings hit, we decided to hit up Mamahuhu (Mister Jiu's fast-casual spinoff). Sadly, the food was so poorly executed on my return visit. No updated pics since we dined in the parklet while it was dark. F O O D * Hot & Sour Soup (Single serving - $6) // 1 star Neither hot or sour, the soup was incredibly salty that we had to toss it. * Sweet & Sour Chicken ($18) // 3 stars Solid on my first visit, the sweet & sour chicken was served borderline cold this time. It was still crunchy tho with good batter to chicken ratio. But, the flavor was all sour and no sweet, while the bell peppers + onions were still raw. * Beef & Broccoli ($18) // 2 stars Five small slices of dry, leathery beef (I guess they don't velvet the beef here?) over a bed of undercooked broccoli swimming in a pool of salty gravy. * Tomato Garlic Chowmein ($14) // 1 star The noodles were overcooked to mush and had broken into one inch strands. It too was ridiculously salty that we had to toss it. * Rice ($4) // 3 stars Not cooked with enough water, the rice was dry, on the firm side. Overall, the food was a salt bomb, either undercooked or cooked to death with no wok hei. I'm all for paying for Chinese-American food focusing on quality over quantity but this isn't it. Really off night? I hope so.

Maddy F.

Yelp
it was just not yummy at all, and came out to almost 20$ for a meager serving, i would go to family owned instead next time

Michelle K.

Yelp
The branding here is super cute! Very modern with pops of color. The food also comes out super fast, and it's tasty with distinct flavors. The only thing is that it's quite pricey for how much typically Chinese food is, and I wished the quantity was a bit larger overall.

Jerome F.

Yelp
Great Ambience! Have had this multiple times when visiting and living in the city. Staff are always nice! Would 10/10 recommend the Honey Hawthorn! Have ordered from them to-go as well and it's also delicious!

Yelp
My husband and I have always wanted to try Mamahuhu so we finally decided to come in for a try. The food was so impressive that we've been back a few times already. FOOD Our favorite thing to order is the Tingly Spicy Chicken Sandwich. Crispy fried chicken with a spicy tingly Sichuan sauce and coleslaw served in a pineapple bun. The sandwich comes with a small side of pickled veggies. It's so delicious. It has a balance of texture and flavor. The chicken is covered in a light rice batter. It has crunch but it doesn't taste heavy or over fried. I love that the chicken is juicy and perfectly cooked. This is our go to item on the menu. The mapo tofu was pretty good. The tofu is cooked with minced pork in a spicy bean sauce. Definitely flavorful. The rice unfortunately was pretty dry. But it can be overlooked since it soaks up the sauce from the mapo tofu. AMBIANCE AND SERVICE You order your food at the counter and grab a number. The food is brought out to your table. Our food arrived pretty quickly which was a nice surprise. Afterwards, you bus your own table and put away your plates and trash. OVERALL I would definitely recommend trying this place out. The food is Chinese American so don't expect authentic Chinese. It's a little bit pricy but the food is delicious. Ordering the Tingly Spicy Chicken Sandwich is a must.

Shay M.

Yelp
This place is on the smaller side, with fewer seats than their other location, but the quality is still great. - orange chicken: always slaps! so perfectly crispy and tart. the flavor is strong, so it's good with a bowl of rice - mapo tofu: also had a strong flavor, and even the mild had a bit of a kick. a bit on the heavier side than I prefer for mapo tofu, but tasty nonetheless. not sure if I would order again. - boba softserve: I think it's oat ice cream and it was quite light and delicious. it def got too sweet by the end but the sesame seed crunchies were a nice touch. boba was not the softest

Yelp
Went there during a lull on a Saturday evening, noticed lots of takeout happening, heard good things, been to Mister Jiu's. Food was good, but the sauces were somewhat overwhelming, and very salty; about 2/3 of the way we couldn't any more. We'd ordered MSG chicken, an eggplant dish, and a coming dish(garlic noodles?) just couldn't get past the salt, especially when one is elderly and watching their salt intake. Presentation was nice, clean environment, can you cut the salt and gravy, make your dishes drier, or is that how your clientele like it? If it is, not sure if we'll be back.

Yelp
Popped into this location during the weekend. Hadn't heard of it before. But upon glancing over the menu, my husband and I couldn't pass it by. The Lazi Chicken Combo is deliciously flavourful and spicy! I love that you can ask to make it more spicy than it already is. The abundance of aromatics and chilis is simply mouthwatering. The chicken is perfectly breaded with a nice crunchy exterior and mouth watering juicy chicken within. My husband had the Spicy Chicken Sandwich. Which was by all accounts very good. He did not get as much málà as expected but the overall flavour as very delicious. Jasmine Tea Soda was surprisingly delicious. It had all of the nostalgic qualities of jasmine tea with a carbonated sweetness to earn it the "soda" part of the name. The staff was very polite and dining room was kept clean. There was an outdoor eating area as well.

Maya K.

Yelp
Delicious Mapo Tofu and hot&sour soup. Friendly workers and quick service. I'll be back!

Yelp
Fast, upscale-casual Asian food that reminds me of my mom's home cooking with a modern take. If you're looking for that blast from the past of Chinese flavors with a modern twist, this is the place for you. Mamahuhu is the perfect place to catch up with friends for a quick bite or a casual "treat yourself" solo meal. The dishes are high quality (personal favorites being the Tingly Spicy Chicken sandwich in the pineapple bun and the Chrysanthemum salad) with very laidback vibes. Even though dishes come out fast, they still taste very high quality and full of love. Even though you order your food at the counter and fill up your own water, servers do come around from time to time to check in and clear your tables of empty dishes. Think of the service almost like an Asian Souvla (haha). Jokes aside, this is a well rounded restaurant with good food, service and vibes. My only complaint is this location does not have enough seating (even with the outdoor seating). I came around 7pm on a Monday and it was PACKED. The cashier had suggested we order our food to-go, which was slightly disappointing since we wanted a nice meal out. I think this location has mahjong nights, hence the reason for no seating, so I wish they would provide more seating for diners (not taking part in mahjong) on those specific nights.

Jad A.

Yelp
A great spot, with tasty food. The restaurant is very well decorated and the staff is very friendly. We have ordered take out before and now have had good in person. The portions are generous and the food is very delicious. Their spring rolls are one of the best I have had. Sweet and sour chicken is crispy and delicious. Cabbage salad is fresh and perfectly mixed.

Kim Ann T.

Yelp
I kept seeing instagram ads for the other dishes, and their frozen dumplings, so I thought the restaurant overall would be a good pick when I was in the neighborhood. Boy was I wrong. We ordered the sweet and sour chicken lunch and mapo tofu with pork lunch. I did not enjoy my meal at all. It was edible, and I finished it, but it wasn't great. I just don't understand what the hype is all about! It has a cute menu, and it seems like their social media presence is great, but that's all they have to it. They're more of a modern, American Chinese restaurant to fit the social media clean girl aesthetic rather than serving up delicious food. I will not be coming back.

Chloe H.

Yelp
There is plenty of both indoor and outdoor seating. People have told me that Mamahuhu is not "authentic", but it's not meant to be... It's Chinese American, and it's very much a reimagination of Chinese American. It's healthy, affordable Chinese American food made without MSG. The things I love about Mamahuhu are: 1) continuous innovation and 2) belief in sourcing humanely grown, antibiotic and hormone free ingredients, and delivering healthy and sustainable alternatives at an affordable price. What we ordered: - Tingly spicy crispy chicken sandwich ($13) - Jade fried rice ($10) I came here explicitly for the crispy chicken sandwich, and it 100% matched my expectations. I would say that the pineapple buns were less soft and chewy than the traditional ones, but I personally find traditional pineapple buns too glutenous so this was perfect. I have a really high spice tolerance and I could definitely still taste the spicy, so be aware if you have a low spice tolerance. I'm not sure why they say that the jade fried rice serves 2-3. It is a lot of fried rice for one person but it's not a lot of food for one person. The fried rice was delicious as well. I love the modern interior, the vibrant colors, and the artwork on the walls. It's a great spot to hang out with friends. Would totally come back.

Reeya C.

Yelp
tldr: get the Tingly Spicy Chicken Sandwich for a mouth-watering and uniquely flavorful fusion experience. This location is in Noe Valley, and because it's their newest location (only been open ~5 months), I think it gets less crowded than their other ones. They don't have a lot of seating inside, but they have a few tables outside. I was inspired to come here after seeing a tik tok advertising their Tingly Spicy Chicken Sandwich (shoutout to Mamahuhu's tik tok account!). You order at the back, and they'll bring the food to your table. Wow! Wow! Wow! The Tingly Spicy Chicken Sandwich was insane! The fried chicken was perfectly crispy and coated with the mala spice and a chili oil that offered a subtle numbing sensation. All of this is topped with a tangy vinegar aoili and stuffed between two fluffy pineapple buns. I highly recommend this option if you're looking for something on the spicier end that is packed with a variety of unique flavors.

Patricia T.

Yelp
We literally love Mamahuhu so much, we have it like every week. Mamahuhu, if you're hiring influencers, HMU because I will gladly say all of the words. We've had the hilarious privilege of trying so many things on the menu, here are our favorites right now: - Lazi Chicken: iconic delicious crispy chicken. Literally so good, I'd have this every meal if I could take it. Picked veggies always hit. Do not eat the chilies lest you have the spice tolerance of a fire breather, I've made this mistake and won't make it again - Chrysanthemum Salad: DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS! the dressing is legendary and the chrysanthemum greens are uncommon and pretty delicious - Honey Hawthorne Chicken Sandwich: the crispies on top of the pineapple bun paired with the delicious delicous goodness of the chicken in the sandwich and the sauce...what a perfect chicken sandwich, and so unique - Capital Curry Chow Mein: you must try this. innovative to put curry powder on chow mein. a perfect chow mein. I didn't realize Mamahuhu was done by the team who did Mister Jiu's when we first started this journey, but in hindsight it makes a lot of sense. Everything is so amazing, well-done, and a combination of Chinese tradition and American innovation. We're going to order again and again (at this point my whole paycheck goes to Mamahuhu) and are thinking about getting matching shirts LOL so if you see two folks walking around in Mamahuhu shirts that would be us

Liza M.

Yelp
[allium-free vegetarian/vegan review] The menu is very limited in terms of what can be made allium-free. I ordered the crysanthemum sesame salad and yolo mala cucumber salad. Both of the sauces were super tasty. I couldn't get enough. Crysanthemum tasted just like tong ho, the chinese veggie that goes in hotpot. Seating is first come first serve and we happened to dine on a mahjong night. Cool outdoor ambiance and setup. Tables were all full but we only waited 10min before a table opened up. I would try the sweet and sour cauliflower next.

Jessica R.

Yelp
I love their mapo tofu, curry noodles, jade fried rice, and pretty much everything else. My son also loves the kids meal chicken and garlic noodles. Whether we pick up or get it delivered, the food reheats well. I love their chili sauce to add for extra spice! Friends love it too when we've ordered it when hosting at our place.

Nancy E.

Yelp
SO so good!! 10000% recommend! The sweet and sour was delicious and sweet and the dipping sauce for the egg rolls was on the thicker side too- so yummy!

Ed U.

Yelp
James Beard-awarded Brandon Jew is a genuinely talented chef worthy of the media attention for his attempts to resuscitate San Francisco's Chinatown with his trendsetting eatery Mister Jiu's. However, I think he needs to keep his eye on the ball with his more casual chain of eateries of which this was most definitely one of them. Choices appear quite limited here better to accommodate the Noe Valley baby stroller brigade. They appear to be the main target of this location. I came here on a late afternoon during the week and found myself surrounded by hyperactive toddlers who just discovered their boogers were not really condiments, I tried to limit the space I took up in order to accommodate enervated young parents who felt a need to indulge their children by turning the dining space into a wannabe jungle gym. I felt like I was at a McDonald's with a PlayPlace. I ordered the $16 Mushroom Mapo Tofu Rice Plate which featured organic shiitakes mixed with doubanjiang, fermented chili, and Sichuan peppercorns and topped with chopped green onions. It came with a side of sautéed mustard greens and a scoop of white rice, which was just not enough to offset the excessive sauciness of the dish (photo https://bit.ly/3qlW9nd). I also had the $5 Mala YOLO Cucumber, which was just sliced cucumbers mixed in a spicy seasoning (photo: https://bit.ly/44WxwML). The net effect left me a bit lukewarm, especially as the toddlers felt a need to do pit pumps and fart noises while I ate. If it's any consolation, I did enjoy the $5 Snow Jasmine Tea Soda (photo: https://bit.ly/45hbUue). That at least provided some sweet comfort to my late afternoon meal. I guess I need to rent a child if I come back. FOOD - 3 stars...way too saucy for mapo tofu AMBIANCE - 3 stars...PlayPen SERVICE - 3.5 stars...more like automatic pilot TOTAL - 3 stars...kind of a miss for me RELATED - Exploring Noe Valley? Yelp
I've had this place saved for about 2 years now, but haven't really got around to it till it blowing up on TikTok recently. This hole in the wall restaurant serves Asian fusion dishes and features a young and hip aesthetic. We ordered the food Togo and brought it a picnic. We got the sando combo meal, which comes with a choice of chicken sando, soup, and drink. We decided to get the honey Hawthorne chicken, hot and sour soup, and Jasmine snow soda. Honey Hawthorn Chicken Sandwich (5/5): my family is a chicken sandwich enthusiast and I love pineapple buns, so this sandwich was a dream come true. We decided to get this one because it wasn't spicy and we did not want to eat spicy food at the park. The pineapple was sweet and everything you expect it to be. The chicken was glazed with like the way a honey walnut shrimp would. I really enjoyed eating this unique combination with its sweet and savory flavors. Hot and sour soup (5/5): Just your typical hot and sour soup. It wasn't too spicy and was just perfect. Came in a generous size as well. Tomato Garlic Chow Mein (4/5): This dish was like a tomato based chow mein and came with pork. I though the tomato flavor was interesting, but I gel it like it was missing that msg sweet flavor compared to your typical chow mein. Snow Jasmine Soda (4/5): Got this as part of the meal. It was very refreshing and just a carbonated tea. I definitely recommend trying this place!

Yelp
Went to try this new take on Asian Fusion and I thought it was over-priced for what you got as you had to order from the register and zero table service. If I have to stand up and order and then bus my own table, the tip will reflect this. I've always said, If I have to stand in line to order there in no tipping, period. BUT, if the service is exceptional and they go above the standard order and give you a good experience, then thats another story. IF you have to pick up food, get your own utensils, bus table, etc.....then yes, Tip goes to me. Back to the food and quality of dishes. The Cashew Chicken was very bland and not a lot of flavor, while the sweet and sour chicken was nothing great as I have had better sweet and sour chicken at the local Chinese restaurant and most restaurants for what its worth. Lazi Chicken I did not get as again, most restaurants have something similar or a General Tso's Chicken and the portions could be better, considering the price. Instead I got the Mapo Tofu over rice. for three of us the bill came to $79 with two boba drinks. If the quality and service was amazing I would give it maybe four to five stars.....but the service was less than great, attitude of cashier was same and had zero recommendations minus when I asked if the Lazi Chicken was good, he said, "its pretty popular". Would have been nice, if he asked if I like something on the spicy side or sweet side, what kind of vegetables come with it, etc. Nope. Probably not going to go back, sadly as there are 10 really good Chinese restaurants within 4 blocks of this place and they all give better portion sizes with fresh/quality ingredients and wait on you while refilling tea complimentary and of course taking away dirty dishes and or getting you a to-go box.

Misha T.

Yelp
It was a day I felt being really extra was warranted so I came and tried the fish sandwich with the caviar (lol). So it's a very good fish sandwich but the caviar got lost in it and didn't really add anything. So I basically took the rest of the fish eggs home and just ate them with a little bread and butter. The commemorative spoon is pretty cool.

Lian T.

Yelp
After a horrible experience at their Richmond location - I decided to give them another shot and ordered takeout. Lazi chicken 5/5 Sweet and sour cauliflower 4/5 Spicy sandwich 5/5 Cucumber salad 5/5 Hot and sour soup 2/5 The only thing I wouldn't order again is the hot and sour soup. Not sour enough for me and lacked flavor depth. This is the best sandwich you will ever eat. It is perfect if you love spicy. The lazy chicken and sweet and sour cauliflower were so good too and still stayed crispy in their to go containers!

Jose M.

Yelp
I am a Chinese food enthusiast. I've been to China numerous times and can definitively say that Mamahuhu provided authentic Chinese cuisine. There are certain spices and flavor profiles that are mainly found in China and I feel that I was being brought back to China. We ordered the Lazi chicken (very spicy and I got the mala sauce on the die) and the sweet and sour chicken. You won't find any orange chicken here! You could taste the flavor of the mala spices and sichuan peppercorns in my dish. Both meats were very crispy and juicy. The vegetables helped balance out the spice of the Lazi chicken. You order at the counter and get a number and the food comes out to you. The only downside is I felt that the rice was a little too dry. Other than that, I would definitely go back!

Krisha P.

Yelp
Laidback, modern Chinese spot. Order at the counter then find your own seat. Got the rice bowl Mapo tofu which had a nice kick, but a tad salty for my liking. My boyfriend and his friends all got the chicken sandwich and they loved the flavors and the heat it came with. Another standout was the sparkling jasmine tea. It was so refreshing on a hot summer day. It was sweet, but not overwhelmingly so.

Ranjan P.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place, and didn't. I barely liked it. But giving them the benefit of doubt, and three stars because I'm chalking it to maybe it's my taste buds. We got their chicken sandwich (not the spicy one), and their potstickers, which they were kind enough to customize without chili, plus the hot and sour soup. The pot stickers, which we got with tofu rather than pork, were fried, which I should've asked first if they were pan sautéed. The shells and exterior were much too hard and crispy, so off the bat, not a great consistency. The hot and sour soup was decent, though could've use a lot more tang. The sandwich I guess I didn't appreciate the breading and the flavors tasted like a bit of a mess, e.g. jumbled and not sparkling. My husband ate it, and he loves Asian food, but even for him, he said it wasn't what he'd expected. The prices, though, are great especially for the ingredients. The interior is spartan, clean and colorful, with a water station, where they bring you chopsticks and/or cutlery to your table. The customer service is super friendly and warm, lovely, attentive. For me, because I'd barely eaten anything, we went down the street to the Mexican place for a taco.

Yelp
Saw that they serve a chicken sandwich in between a pineapple bun. Two of favorite food combined so I knew I needed to try this place and it did not disappoint! A very creative Chinese-American fusion restaurant. Honey Hawthorne Chicken Sandwich: 5/5 Super crispy fried chicken with a sweet sauce and shredded cabbage. It was so yummy with lots of flavor! Tomato Garlic Chow Mein: 4.5/5 Used the fat noodles that I love! Super chewy and full of garlic tomato flavor. It sort of tasted like garlic noodle and tomato pasta combined. Hot and Sour Soup: 4/5 Snow Jasmine Tea Soda: 4/5 Enjoyed this meal a lot and will definitely come back for that pineapple bun chicken sandwich whenever I crave it. Check this place out!

Yelp
Vegan review: This is a nice spot for a quick meal! I looooved the tomato noodles and mapo tofu. The tomato noodles had a fun & unique texture. It was very enjoyable to eat. The mapo tofu was nothing special but definitely a delicious classic. The two vegan desserts were so exciting to me! My favorite was the banana one but both were great!

Yelp
I was very happy to have a new restaurant open fairly recently on 24th Street in Noe Valley -- and even better, it is so good. I think it's a good idea if you like spicy food and I do. My favorites are the Mabo Tofu with mushrooms and the cherry tomato chow mein. Also love the little fried chicken bites - Laaaazi Chicken. The sweet and sour chicken wasn't for me but that's a matter of personal taste . The staff is always pleasant. You just seat yourself and enjoy the good food. A great addition to Noe Valley.

Yelp
Tomato garlic noodles are sooo good. Sweet and fragrant. Fresh tomatoes on top with bell peppers. Chewy noodles. I gotta remember to come back for these again! Friend loves the crispy chicken sandwich on sweet bun. Chili sauce on the aide is a unique mix that has black bean in it. Love to see the expanded menu with boba and drinks. And soft serve too. Great location next to Starbucks across the street from Noe Valley Bakery.

Yelp
Wanted to give this spot a try for a quick weeknight dinner and it was so good! I ordered the lazi chicken and cucumber salad and both were great. The lazi chicken has pickled vegetables with it which gave it a really nice acidic kick. The chicken was super crispy and the perfect level of spice! This dish is on the spicier side though so just something to be aware of. The cucumber salad was very light and refreshing. Not as spicy as I thought it would be but still pretty good. Overall will definitely come back to try some of their other dishes!

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place for the support aspect. But unfortunately it is not for me. It is neither panda express nor high quality Chinese food. I am unsure if I should go to Mister Jiu's even, if this is the spin off. Chinese food and these dishes can be much better than this and I think this team is capable in delivering that but for some reason it is not working. What scares me more is that this is what the American public think is good Chinese cuisine. Even if it is Chinese American? Broccoli and beef, I cannot taste the beef flavor. Just sauce. It is like the meat could have been anything. Same with the sweet and sour chicken or cauliflower dish. You literally cannot taste the ingredients. The msg chicken is so salty. Again, can't taste any chicken flavor. Generally, I find the food lacking finesse (especially the sauce ratio and mixing) and none of the actual ingredients (veggie or meat) shine or have any differentiating flavors. You cannot taste the thing that gives you nutrition. There could be no meat and all batter and you wouldn't know it. I like all the graphics and ideas of presenting the cuisine in a different and more modern way. But the food is a missed opportunity and perhaps it is not for me. I am not the core demographic that it is targeting. That is ok I supposed.

Yelp
Ordered to go and was super impressed by my meal. I got the Tangy chicken combo which included a perfectly breaded fried chicken (not too oily!) sandwich with a crunch exterior and juicy interior and the hot and sour soup. I also tried the cabbage salad has a refreshing, fresh taste with an added crunch. Everything is so delicious, well-done, and a combination of Chinese tradition and American innovation. Elevated casual dining!

Yelp
Ordered delivery via DD, packed well, food arrived hot and freshly made. Flavors were dialed, not greasy or overly intense. Just really good, balanced dishes. I loved the mushroom mapo, the sweet and sour chicken, cucumber salad, and hot and sour soup. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Mamahuhu is an Chinese-American cuisine that I visited since they were hosting a Mahjong event there, where members of the community could gather and teach the game to people who weren't very experienced with it. While the restaurants itself isn't very large, there is a decent amount of seating and the space didn't feel cramped. For ordering, you put your order up at the front and then they'll bring you your food (usually in 5-10 minutes or so). From the times I've been here, I've gotten the Mapo Tofu and the Kung Pao Chicken. While the flavors weren't mind-blowing to me (as I've had these dishes quite a bit across different restaurants), I do think that they are done well and you won't be disappointed getting them. The prices here are also pretty reasonable by SF standards, so you won't be breaking the bank by eating here. I would recommend trying their house sodas here though, since they have some interesting flavors like Snow Jasmine and Red Tea that I don't see in a lot of places. Overall, I think this is a nice place to sit down for some solid chinese food if you're around the area!

Yelp
Went to Mamahuhu for dinner on a Monday evening and was pleasantly surprised by the food and the turnout. Bustling with lots of people as Monday night is 'mahjong night' - you can play mahjong with one another and learn from the instructions provided. They have indoor as well as outdoor seating but definitely not enough for the number of visitors it attracts on Monday nights! They had only three vegetarian/vegan options and I got the Mushroom Mapo Tofu with rice and lotus root salad. It was flavourful with just the right amount of spice and the tofu was super soft. I really enjoyed it. My partner got the Sweet and Sour Chicken with rice and lotus root salad, and thought it was sweeter than he would've liked but still good. We both enjoyed our meals and the ambiance, but did think that the food was on the pricer side. The staff are super helpful and quick with whatever you need. Definitely want to visit again and try more from their vegetarian/vegan offerings & their desserts!

Yelp
Got takeout here and the food is delicious! I pass by this location in Noe a lot and see business doing well. I ordered hot and sour soup (imo a little on the sweeter side, but still delicious) and mapo tofu (which really hit the spot with the Szechuan peppers/seasoning). I think portions are fair and on the larger end (for entree). The interiors of the location is super cute. It's pink and the tables/vibes are artsy cute. I think they have a mahjong game monday nights? not too sure on the details but I see them playing when I walk by then. I will return for the $15 set menu some time....

Yelp
Wow, the tingly spicy chicken sandwich was so delicious! The spices mixed with the cilantro and the sweet batter of the chicken was such an explosion of flavor. If there's anything you should order, I would highly recommend the tingly spicy chicken sandwich and eating it with the delicious chili sauce. The honey hawthorne chicken sandwich was decent, but I personally like spicy chicken sandwiches more. The sweet and sour soup was also decent, but was nice to have as a combo with the chicken sandwiches to wash everything down with. The mapo tofu with pork was delightful! I would get it again, but extra spicy next time.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I stopped by for a quick bite and we're impressed with the spicy chicken sandwich! The pineapple bun sandwich was a fun addition and I enjoyed that the chicken was actually very crispy. It is not too spicy so don't shy away from the 3 chili signs. The design of the restaurant is super cute as well. It is counter service to order so it was an easy and quick stop.
