On the Grid : Mamajuana Cafe

"Herbs, roots, smells, colors, and sensual taste. Mamajuana's cuisine as a brand is beautiful and on point: hues that represent the rum, red wine and honey in the native Dominican drink, Mamajuana. Perfect to add a bit of spice to your Friday date night, the drink, Mamajuana, is said to help 'sexual vigor.' In either case, with a fusion of food from Latin America and a speciality toward seafood-centric dishes, you can't go wrong." - Jeanne Henry

From the moment we stepped into this restaurant, we were greeted with warmth and kindness by the manager, setting the tone for what turned out to be an unforgettable dining experience. Our waiter Jordi Reyes was truly exceptional—extremely patient, friendly, and attentive. He went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed every moment, offering thoughtful food and drink recommendations that did not disappoint! We ordered the Brazino fish, Mofongo de Camarones, Bandeja Paisa, and Lomo Salteado—and each dish was absolutely delicious, bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. The drinks? Also amazing! Every sip and bite exceeded our expectations. And just when we thought the night couldn’t get better, our waiter surprised us at the end with a complimentary shot of Mamajuana. Smooth, flavorful, and the perfect way to end the meal! If you’re looking for great food, fantastic service, and an all-around memorable experience—go here. You won’t regret it. We’ll definitely be back! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Food was: $30 - $50 per person Drinks separate: $14 +

It is the best place thus far in Westchester county. You'll get greeted humbly by the host. Thee atmosphere is family oriented and kid friendly. Food is awesome and to your liking. And the cocktails are great as well. The staff is truly amazing and professional. I highly recommend this establishment to everyone.

I stopped by this past weekend on a Sunday afternoon when they first opened and we was impressed from the first step inside! Large glass windows provide the perfect amount of natural light which compliment the dark green and white interior. A floral wall and soft yellow lighting really tie the place together making it instagram-able but also classy. Next came the vibes. They played a mix of latin music that wasn’t too loud but noticeable enough for you to dance in your seat while still having a conversation making it the perfrct spot for Brunch with the girls or a celebration. For appetizers we had the plantain boat with chicken (so good mom is trying to figure out how to recreate it) as main dishes I had the steak and eggs my mother had the Salmon Salad with passion fruit dressing and my grandmother had their traditional Sancocho For brunch (especially compared to what I’m used to in Manhattan) I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the food. My steak was perfectly cooked medium well and my sunny side eggs dripped beautifully over my seasoned home fries. Once I started my meal I couldn’t stop myself so I didn’t get a good photo (but still dreaming about this so I will be back). My mother loved the balance of flavors on her salad and my grandmother was impressed with how “home cooked” the Sancocho tasted. For drinks we did a mix of the white and red sangria on the table- I had the white and did their bottomless option - in my experience bottomless can often be disappointing if the drinks are too watered down but the white sangria was sweet and not too boozy (or so I thought until I had a third) All in all I look forward to coming back - next time will be for one of their weekend events when they typically have a DJ or live music performances. With just 6 months in the area I am sure this location will become a staple in the community!

Google
We went there tonight to celebrate a birthday, once you walk in it feels open , crisp and fresh, food and service was up to par along with the cocktails . Great selection of dishes and drinks, if you are reading this you must try it and see for yourself the amazing set up. We had a good -great time. Keep it up.

Angelica was our server and she was such a gem! She made great recommendations, was super sweet and overall made our time so enjoyable.

Yelp
Food is good, portions are smaller than when they opened. Service is ok, drinks take long regardless of how many customers they have. Ambiance is great! The food is priced out of proportion to what is received and they hover when you have to enter the tip. Food quality and the ambiance are the pluses. Cost brings this way down.

Yelp
Located in a convenient and nice area (by Hartsdale Metro North station). The happy hours menu has great cocktails and appetizers options $7. We ordered pinchos (skewer) and chimichurri sliders Both were good and if I return I would definitely order the sliders again. We really enjoyed the margaritas (passion fruit and mango). The paella for two was definitely a good portion to even share with three. I would enjoy better if this dish was warmer/hotter. The servers are great and friendly. The service was quick. Live music with Mariachis around 8pm on a Friday evening, it was really fun! A pleasant place to enjoy with friends.

Yelp
The food was well portioned and delicious. We couldn't get enough of each others foods. The waitress was so sweet. We loved talked to her and the food came out relatively quick. The environment was very comfortable and the restaurant was very clean. They were very accomdating and id recommend this for anyone look for a causal variety of latino foods. Not the most kid friendly, though, with only 3 kids food on the menu.

Yelp
Went to Mamajuana Cafe for dinner and drinks on Saturday night. We tried their special drink with lychee, passion fruit, coconut and it was so good. I had the pulpo a la brasa and the trio mofongos. Everything was so flavorful and fresh. My husband had the ceviche and then the ropa vieja, our friends had a red snapper meal and the pulpo was so delicious that they ordered it as dinner. The pulpo came with potatoes, a small salad and an avocado sauce that was delectable. Now we all want to go back to try more things from the menu. I also had the tamarind margarita. Yum. If you haven't been here yet you are missing out. Going to bring my mom for her birthday! The music and ambience was perfect and parking was easy at the public parking lot at 234 E. Hartsdale Avenue.

Yelp
I've been to this place three times and have loved each and every time. The staff is overly friendly and accommodating. Their story in becoming a business owners is truly admiring. The food and drinks are so good. There hasn't been one thing I've ordered in the past that hasn't been deserving of another round.

Yelp
Absolutely loved the pizza here! The crust was perfectly crispy, and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. The atmosphere was vibrant, making it a great spot to enjoy a meal with friends. Highly recommend!

Yelp
A new Dominican restaurant in the neighborhood. Already a win! The food was delicious. The drinks were amazing. The Dominican sushi roll. O M G I am obsessed. Our waiter Carla was immaculate. I def recommend this restaurant. It's big inside and very low key. A HARTSDALE WIN. My new favorite date night spot

Yelp
A new owner and management have been in place since summer, and I must say the food has improved significantly. The drinks are also fantastic! We had a few small dishes and cocktails, and they were just delicious. We'll definitely go back for dinner soon. The bartender was fun, friendly, and helpful too. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Came here with my family and they treated us amazing. The music was perfect, the food was delicious, and they gave us free shots of sangria.

Yelp
Positive: Ambience is very nice, waitresses were friendly and attentive. Music is good. Drinks are okay. Negative: appetizers are very small and pricey. They are also excessively greasy and salty. Entrees have nyc prices.

Jules F.

Yelp
First timer, needless to say we will not be coming back, very disappointing: Appetizers: We shared the ox tail egg rolls, which were the highlight of the meal. However, the portion size was small for the price. Main Courses: I ordered the grilled octopus, but was disappointed by the burnt octopus and the overwhelming presence of salad with minimal flavor overall. My partner's mother ordered a burger, which was not cooked to her requested temperature. Taste and Quality: For a Dominican-Asian fusion restaurant, the dishes were severely lacking in flavor. They seemed to be missing seasoning beyond just salt and pepper. Specialty Cocktails: We tried the specialty mojito, but it was overly sweet and lacked balance. Price: The prices were excessive, especially considering the poor service, mediocre quality, and limited options. The mandatory gratuity charge for bills over $150 only added to the already inflated cost. Overall: I do not recommend, you can find much much better somewhere else.

Yelp
Tell me you don't want children in your establishment without saying it... don't install changing tables. Someone native to Washington Heights and of Dominican descent, I was excited to see Mamajuana coming into my neighborhood. I was highly disappointed. Walked in for dinner on a Saturday night with no reservation, and we were seated promptly. However, the waitress didn't arrive at our table for another 10 minutes. Service left much to be desired. Not the welcoming vibe Dominicans are known for. The food was not great, the moro was dry; our meat was not cooked to our requested temperature. The desert was stale. Unfortunately do not need to return.

Yelp
Yummy...no complaints here. Ambiance is perfect and service was great. Very impressed with my meal. The pork was way more than I expected and cooked to perfection...thank you Mamajuana!!!

Yelp
I recommend this restaurant highly. The food the drinks and the service was excellent. Our server, Louis was so helpful with suggestions of the drinks and the food.

Yelp
The drinks were awesome. The appetizers were horrible the sliders with the size of a quarter the sushi roll was very chewy actually got sick when I came home and threw it up.

Yelp
Been here twice and I decided it's enough. Just because you are catering to Scarsdale people doesn't mean you need to rip them off. Entrees are $40 for basic items. Cmon. We know how much rent costs on this block - it's not NYC pricing, so there is absolutely no rationale for these food and drink prices. Don't ask us if we want sparkling or flat water if you don't have sparkling water. Also, it's a family neighborhood...no baby changing tables is a MAJOR problem. To be honest, over everything else, the changing table issue is why we won't be back. This isn't the West Village..and even there they are more with it.

Yelp
Ordered a margarita which was well mixed. Bad service and ok food. Strongly do not recommend if you do not eat meat. Ordered Mofongo w/cheese. Made it clear no meat, no pork, no chicken, no chicken stock - vegetarian only. Waitress confirmed multiple times. A while later the food came. I confirmed at that point it is vegetarian and the response was yes. Started eating and mixed below the cheese there was chicken or pork. Talked to the waitress and showing her and the response was no there is no meat/chicken/pork. Ate a bit more and there was more of what was clearly a white meat. Waitress still said was not meat but would make it again. I said no and got fish. The fish was decent albeit a bit overcooked. When the bill came my original dish was there. Waitress said she kept the original dish instead of the fish which was $2 more. Manager came over and tried to blame me saying I did not tell the waitress to exclude meat and they could remove a desert instead. I said she is a liar and no, you fed me meat when I don't eat meat and my main course was to be taken off. Argued a bit and they eventually removed my dish. Bottom line they lost the business of this family and hopefully others. They should have owned up to their mistake instead of lying and trying to put the error on me.

Yelp
I was fortunate enough to have a parking space in front , but didn't have meter change . I went inside and asked for table for two and then asked for 4quarters for $1.00. The man at the front went to the back , and returned and said they don't have change . I said you are a business how do you not have change for a dollar ? I asked if he could get change from the bar and he flat out said no , so I asked the bartender and was given the same reply . My friend arrived and made change for my dollar but I was deeply disappointed in the rude mannerism and they obviously didn't care about the possibility of losing a customer over making change . I will not be returning .

Yelp
The food is great! Not a typical Dominican restaurant definitely more like fusion. Service was good; going back soon for sure! Finally something different in this neighborhood.

Yelp
The food in Mamajuana is fantastic! I have been to two locations: Woodbridge/Edison and West New York. Woodbridge is VERY professional and they servers are very attentive. The West New York location is beautiful with stunning views however; we were there this past Sunday evening and a few negative things that need improvement... The music was EXTREMELY too loud for a Sunday night. I know the brunch during the day merits the loud music but on a Sunday after 9pm? We could not talk to each other. I thought this place would be like Edison. It took 20 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us after we were seated. Our food was cold; delicious bit cold. Too many servers standing around socializing amongst each other. There didn't seem to be a manager . Thank you to the young lady that took care of us!

Katherine C.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my time here! The food was and service we received was great and loved the overall the ambiance it had!

Yelp
They have a lot of work to do. I get it they are newly opened, but if you're open then you have to get it right. Our nice waiter tried desperately to serve us well, but there was only so much he could do. The food was pricey and not very good at all. The drinks were mediocre and inconsistent and the last thing I'm going to say is they ran out of margarita glasses on Cinco de Mayo! They were literally watching the patrons to see who would finish first so they could grab your glass and make someone else's drink. I was hopeful...it's always good to see Hispanic food in the area, but like I said they need to do better quickly if they are going to succeed. I won't be back.

Yelp
Two stars only for our desperate waiter who tried to please us...pricey, overhyped, bland stale food and expensive - unimpressed and underwhelming

Yelp
I was so excited to learn Mamajuana had moved up to Westchester County. I always heard how lively and energetic their Sunday brunches are. The ambiance, drinks and staff services meet my expectations. Sadly the food with the price cost is what brings my expectations and experience down. Their beautifully presented plated dishes was just used to pulling the wool over the sheep's eyes. Mamajuana where's the flavor, where's the seasoning, where's the love?!? Tostones were dry and bland. Chimichurri sauce was just a small bowl of oil lacking garlic and herbs. Empanadas were flavorless that i had to ask for extra ketchup/mayo dressing to make the barely filled empanadas just make it "ok".When its all said and done i was definitely taken back when my bill was $300 including tip for just two people. Thats drinks, two appetizers, one salad one entree and dessert. Cost will never be an issue as long as the customer gets the full total experience; atmosphere, service and delicious food!

Yelp
I came there on sunday during the day around 6pm and sat by the bar. First the place looked unclean. Second, I asked for sparking water or club soda and they poured me pellegrino from an old bottle that was already flat. Then a bartender poured me ginger tonic so I had to ask again for a plain sparkling water. For dinner, I ordered Tuna tartare tacos and grilled octopus. Both came so quick that it made me wonder how they did it. They did not taste fresh. Tuna came out half frozen and octopus was mushi and overcooked. Seemed like they pulled out a couple of left overs from saturday dinner and warmed them up. I live in the area and I love all the restaurants that are there but this new one is awful (Vega nearby is much better and food is fresh). I'll never come again.

Yelp
TLDR - Great food, service, ambiance, and drinks. First time there. Will be back often. No complaints. Five stars. [FYI - I wrote this same review in Google (copy/paste). It's a great new restaurant in my neighborhood, so I like to support. But if it was shit or mediocre, I'd tell you.] For those who like to read: Took my family to this restaurant for the first time yesterday. We recently moved here from NYC-proper to Scarsdale, so we're well-acquainted with other Mamajuana Cafe's, but we hadn't been to this one yet. My opinions are predicated on four things -- food, drinks, service and ambiance. And on that basis it was a great experience across the board -- from the food to drinks, to service and attitude/engagement, to ambiance and music playlist. Our server (Jennifer) was incredibly kind and informative. Everything she suggested was on the money. We had a bunch of food, but I particularly enjoyed the Mofongo and Oxtail Egg Roll (yes, exactly what it sounds like); and my wife ordered a Sushi w/ I don't know what, but it was delicious. We had many other things that I don't have the time to specifically review, but suffice it to say that everything was excellent and we have no complaints. And before I forget, the Mamajuana Tangerine Mojito was excellent. I enjoy mojitos but dislike when it's too sweet. Having informed our waitress of my preferences, this was her suggestion, and it was on the money. We'll be going back often from this point forward. Highly recommend if you're in the area.

Emily G.

Yelp
Overpriced and definitely a big disappointment. I ordered a steak and basically that is all I got. no sides, no bread, no salad. Will not be back. Also they have a upcharge for service just be aware.

Magdalena K.

Yelp
The food is horrible. I have purchased food on three different occasions, twice I through it away because it wasn't what I ordered I have complained to management. But nothing was done The last time the food made us sick!

Stephanie F.

Yelp
Amazing food amazing ambience. I feel horrible reading all the other reviews definitely misleading the drinks were amazing. The service was great and the food was delicious.

Arman A.

Yelp
Food was great, service was quick and servers were very nice and friendly, the music was great.

Yelp
Parking is always an issue in that area , that being said I was fortunate enough to get a space in front of the restaraunt. I went inside while waiting for my friend to get a table and also asked for four quarters for the meter . The gentleman at the front said "let me ask" and proceeded to go to the back and came back and said we don't have quarters , I then asked could he ask the bartender he still said we don't have any. I ended up asking the bartender who also told me no. I asked how do you give customers their change back ? He didnt respond . My friend arrived and she gave me the quarters . We still decided to eat there even though I was deeply disappointed with their lack of customer service . They were willing to lose a customer over small change.
