We decided to be adventurous and made a trek from Johns Creek to Buford Highway to eat at Mamak, a lovely little Malaysian cafe located in Asian Square.
We started with Roti Canai, a fluffy and warm pancake that is served alongside a ramekin of curry chicken and potato. It is heavenly, albeit a bit spicy for those used to eating in the watered down suburbs. We also ordered the fried wontons, which were unlike what you would typically get in a Chinese restaurant. They have a tasty filling with a crispy wrapper served alongside a sweet Thai chili sauce. They were a little greasy, but my daughter loved them.
For entrees, we ordered Kari Ayam, which was an entree version of what came alongside the Roti Canai. It was flavorful, sweet, with a spiciness that lingers but bearable. This came with steamed rice. We also ordered Chow Kway Teow, with flat noodles, shrimp, squid, egg, and bean sprouts. It was tasty with a hint of spice. The seafood was fresh and cooked well.
The servers are buzzing around bringing plates and clearing tables. There is no standing around here. They provide a chilled bottle of water for us to serve ourselves as needed. We like that.
I would definitely return to Mamak to try some of the other offerings. It feels and tastes much more authentic than what restaurants call Malaysian out in the 'burbs.
