New York Bakery Maman Brings Its Oprah-Approved Cookies to Montreal | Eater Montreal

"I'm excited that a hit New York City bakery, café and restaurant is opening in Griffintown: Maman will take over the former Licence IV space on Notre-Dame near Guy and opens Monday August 5 at 1524 Notre-Dame W. Founded by Elisa Marshall and Benjamin Sormonte (joined by Montrealer Sabrina Taddei), the concept blends southern French culinary culture with North American influences and takes a homey, mom-inspired approach — many menu items are named for the mothers who contributed recipes. Expect lunch-friendly sandwiches like the Croque Maman, part-healthy, part-hearty waffle-iron hash browns with smoked salmon, avocado, greens, lemon, dill and egg, and a stronger lean toward restaurant service in Montreal with a 5 à 7 French-style apéro and small plates; the spot holds a full liquor license with French wines, Quebec beers and cocktails such as the Ouest Side (gin, St-Germain, cucumber, mint, lime and elderflower). The bakery will showcase the famed nutty chocolate chip cookie (one of Oprah Winfrey’s favourite things in 2017) and an Oprah-endorsed s’mores cookie, plus items like a white chocolate lavender blueberry cake and a pistachio chocolate croissant, supported by a solid coffee program using beans from Brooklyn roaster Parlor. The renovated space, designed largely by Marshall with purchases from the south of France, will be light, airy and Provençal with greenery and a cozy streetside terrasse, and will also serve as an event space for private and semi-private gatherings; hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday." - Tim Forster

What a wonderful restaurant! Had a lovely brunch with my friend. Arrived there at 2pm. Waited 5 mins for a seat. The food came quickly, even though it was during rush hour. The staff were so welcoming. I am glad I have tried this iconic spot in NYC. Reservations are suggested during weekends as it can get packed pretty quickly, I will be coming back!

What a lovely discovery! This Griffintown café has a warm, homely décor. The menu features classic dishes made with unique ingredients, giving them a wonderfully original twist. I love that the breakfast menu is available throughout lunchtime. The service was friendly and attentive. I’ll definitely be returning with guests! And since it is a cafe, let me add that they have very good coffee.

The place is beautiful — I really loved the design and branding. I was looking for a meal that wasn’t too greasy, so I went with the chicken sandwich and a side salad. Unfortunately, it didn’t taste freshly made. It reminded me more of a Starbucks-style sandwich than something you’d expect from a local café. I was hoping for something fresh and flavorful, but it didn’t quite deliver.

My general impression of this place is pretty good but the waiting time for our table to be served was unreasonably long. It seems to be a popular place, so it was busy, but my friends and I came in, when it was still half capacity. It took, at least, 40-50 minutes for us to get our food, since the moment of placing an order. I liked the food, and I like the environment. It's quite an aesthetic spot but the waiting time quite changed the impression of this place

I think this wins for my new favourite brunch spot in Mtl! the vibes were so cute, the servers were so nice and helpful, and the FOOD! Omg the food was beyond! Don’t skip the pastries, the almond croissant was sinfully good! The breakfast sandwich was so flavourful and the pancakes were like actual cake! 10/10!!!

The highlight of this place in the atmosphere – cozy and inviting, probably the best aspect they have going for them. The staff were fine, nothing much to note there. As for the food: there’s nothing wrong with sticking to a “homestyle” approach and keeping things simple. Not every brunch needs to be full of bold, complex flavors. But if you’re going to do simple, it should at least be done well. Unfortunately, the food felt bland – the kind of meal I could easily prepare better at home. The salad was fine, just a standard salad. I expected more from the potatoes and the chicken. Both eggs had a strange slimy texture, which I believe was undercooked egg whites. I didn’t try the coffee or dessert.

Another location for a restaurant originating from New York. Lovely brunch spot with classics like breakfast sandwiches, ratatouille in a skillet, and french toast. No benedicts or poached eggs available but I did enjoy their over-easy eggs on my ratatouille (added chicken). Cold brew coffee was a winner, and if you want to shake it up, the Irish version was great too. Pastry assortment was a good starter. Listed to share but they come to the table whole (cut it up to divide yourself). It's based on availability but we had a pain au chocolat (chocolatine), almond pastry, and classic butter croissant. All were delicious and I most preferred the pain au chocolat out of the selection. Their chocolate chip cookies are Oprah-mentioned but to be honest are nothing I'd go out of my way for but still a really good chocolate chip cookie. Great seating for 2-4 but up to 6 is comfortably accomodatable. Some outdoor seating available too. Great for take-out/take-away. Would come again!

• French toast with coffee mascarpone: really good. • Hojicha latte: recommended. • Lavender latte: strange flavour, wouldn’t order again. • Owner is friendly
