Stopped in with family on a Saturday morning. Around 930 or so it started getting busy but staff kept the line moving. The blueberry latte and mocha were so so good. Loved the banana bread too. The place is spacious with a really nice, calming interior. The staff were insanely helpful and kind. Hard recommend. We'll be back.

My friends and I love coming here. The food is always good. The ambiance is lovely and warm. Laila was so knowledgeable about the menu and was SUCH a beautiful spirit. She took our order, gave us suggestions, AND was able to enlighten me about the espresso in the drinks so I could get my fix adequately.

Had a lovely meet-up with dear friends here, and I have to say—it’s a great spot for long, relaxed conversations. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, perfect for catching up without feeling rushed. Tried the smashed avocado tartine—it was just okay, nothing particularly memorable. But the cinnamon roll really stood out: crispy texture, slightly different from the usual, and delicious. Prices are fair, and overall, it’s a charming place to sit and unwind.

Run, don’t walk to this place! Adorable vibes, delicious lattes and pastries, and amazing service! Shout out to Paola for her great suggestions as it was our first time. We will be back!

Google
Amazing food and top notch service. Slightly noisy, but great experience. Popular place. Paola was so nice and helpful with the menu. Definitely reccomend Oprah’s favorite thing nutty cookie. Melt in your mouth chocolate, yum! Also had Sophie’s quiche and a salted caramel tahini honeycomb latte that came in a cute mug with great latte art.

This place is a beautiful hidden gem! The food is delicious and the atmosphere is stunning! Paola provided us with impeccable customer service! Justice made a delicious cappuccino and the food and pastries are outstanding! We will be back!

Google
The vibe at the maman at Union Market is excellent. Paola and Justin were excellent and very communicative and patient. Also, Justin’s presentation of the Cherry Blossom Matcha Sakura Latte was beautiful! I was able to get so much work done at this location and I love the rustic decor covered in lots of greenery indoors and all around. 🙏

Google
Great Cafe serving delicious food and bakery items. Counter service but they do bring you the food to your table. Delicious salmon salad and pastry items for you to enjoy. Very cute and welcoming atmosphere. Pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed the food and decor. Will absolutely stop by again when in the area.

Yelp
Oh maman. I love this cafe and most especially the baked goods. The interior is cozy and inviting, where you order on the right side as you walk in. We ordered a couple of hot drinks and a lemon raspberry loaf cake. It was a generous slice and all the ingredients complemented each other perfectly. Worth the price!! Tucked away in the redone shops in the union market area, this is a great addition!!

Yelp
I didn't expect to enjoy this place as much as I did. I've always wondered what their food was like, so I popped in for a quick breakfast date before yoga with flow well yoga. I was so impressed. The food, itself, was delicious. It was a little bit busy on a Sunday morning, but we were still able to find seats and the service moved pretty quickly. I also ordered an iced chai and a chocolate chip cookie with nuts. The chai was fine, but not my favorite. However, everything else was absolutely great. I didn't eat the entire bowl there and then, but I ate it it the next day and it was still just as good. For one drink, two bowls, and the cookie, we spent just over $50. But honestly, the bowls were pretty big and overall, I would say it was worth it. It's a very cute café vibe. Cute and casual. You can roll in with sweatpants or a cute little dress and honestly fit right in. I can't wait to come back and try something else.

Yelp
Service: wonderful and super friendly, despite how busy it was and the line I was in to get food/drink! Drinks: super delicious, and loved the "spring specials" (I got a matcha special). Although I didn't get food, I had no clue that they had so many gluten free options, so I will definitely be back when I'm in union market to try a snack or little meal! Ambiance: so cute, and surprisingly, pretty spacious (although I've heard that space can be limited bc of how popular this place is).

Yelp
I'd start by saying the girl working near closing was extremely rude! I asked a few questions being it was my first time and the girl just ignored me! The cookies tasted burnt. I got a chocolate chip and a s'mores. I'd rather go to the market next time. The place is really pretty, such a shame.

Yelp
Overall, I really like this place! I went here to get a little bit of work done. I will say that they don't have a ton of outlets so I had to share. They have a nice lower level and then an upper level that you can go to as well. The seating is very whimsical and cute and dainty. They ran out of the pastries that I wanted to get by the time I was there so I ended up with this blueberry thyme goat cheese scone. I didn't quite love it, but I appreciated the artistry of it. It was a little bit hard and I wish it was a little bit softer to the touch. Overall, the service was really good and the person that I had helped me was really great. Off the strength of the service and the aesthetic alone. I would definitely return here.

Yelp
Maman's was a great start to a D.C. weekend. The line moves fast, so don't fret. Be prepared to share a table or get treats to go. Both the macchiato and iced coffee were delicious. We also shared a steak sandwich and iced olive oil cake. Beautiful space and great service!
google avatar

Yelp
Neighborhood coffee and cafe gem! Maman is the perfect little spot to grab a coffee with a friend or quick sandwich for lunch. From the pastries to the drinks to the food, I haven't had anything bad from here. The honey lavender latte is my favorite drink and Papa's breakfast bowl is my go to meal. On top of good food, the staff are kind and attentive. Laila has served me before and she provides good suggestions.

Yelp
Let me start off with Brittany at the register this morning! So kind, such great energy! The service was quick. Breakfast sandwich and coffee were amazing, def recommend. Love a good cold brew. I'm used to the locations in NYC that are sit down service, this location you order at the counter and sit (don't know if this is just for breakfast). I was staying in the neighborhood for a night glad I came here. Also many folks working from the space so it's a good location for that as well. Will be back!

Yelp
I love coming to maman. It's close to my neighborhood and has become one of my favorite coffee shops. Fair warning that this place is ALWAYS packed, especially during the weekends. While there is an upstairs and downstairs, seats are first come first serve and definitely feels like the hunger games. The decor is adorable and has images of the founders and their grandkids sprinkled throughout. I try to switch up what I order each time but I recently got mamas breakfast sandwich and it's delicious! The brioche bread with the caramelized onions absolutely does something to me. Honestly may be my favorite item on the menu thus far. Outside of their coffee options, they have a nice selection of teas.

Yelp
My go-to spots for a pastry. This French-inspired cafe is such a fan favorite, we take all our out of town guests here! The service is always so great too. This location does tend to be a bit hot so in the warmer months, plan to dress light and maybe sit outside! But grab yourself a pastry (all are amazing) and an iced chia tea latte and you'll be such a happy camper!

Yelp
I came here with a friend right when it opened. Of note, at 7:30AM (opening time), they have the croissants available, but it is not until 8AM (on weekdays), that the kitchen is opened. I got their specialty latte, which is a cardamon latte. I am not a coffee fan, but I love the spice added to the latte. I also got their andrea's everything croissant & salmon sandwich, which is like a bagel with salmon and cream cheese, but instead of a bagel, it is on a very fresh, flaky, buttery croissant. It was a bit salty given all the smoked salmon, but it just means they did not shy away from giving you the salmon. Our hostess, Paola was amazing in answering our questions, and the interior decoration was so cute! I will definitely come back to try some of their other items.
google avatar

Diane B.

Yelp
A beautiful floral themed, French inspired bakery by Union Market. The pastries are freshly baked, and the nutty chocolate chip cookie which was featured on Oprah's Favorite Things, is a must try. The everything croissant is a show stopper, as are the other variations of croissants and seasonal cruffins.

Yelp
At this point, I think I have visited all of the Maman locations in DC. It is amazing that each location has been consistent in terms of ambiance, service and beverage quality. One of the things that I truly like about these cafes is that they all have aesthetic similarities, yet are different at the same time. I love the aesthetic at all locations and this one was no different. I have never actually had their food, but I always order the same matcha beverage and sometimes a vegan cookie.
google avatar

Maria Gracias H.

Yelp
Super cute café with a cozy, rustic French vibe--wish I took more pics to show it off! The coffee was great, and the pastries were on point. The pistachio croissant was absolutely amazing, and the chocolate chip cookie came out warm and freshly baked. Just a heads-up: there was a long line and it was tough to find a table on a Saturday morning.
google avatar

Tamara M.

Yelp
Ended up here after buying a latte somewhere else that was less than great! So glad this was steps away to replace my previous order. This latte was perfect! Assuming I caught the rush, the wait was a bit long but totally worth it. Maman's aesthetic is so sweet and very cutesy. Next time, I'd love to sit and experience their dine-in services as I observed other customers who seemed to have wonderful entrées being delivered to their tables. Do: sit in and enjoy your meal! Don't: stand at the counter like I did. Looked like a total newbie until I realized they had seating for takeout orders.
google avatar

Brianna T.

Yelp
It's a bit pricey, but I have yet to try something here I don't like! The inside is very pretty, and there's lots of seating. And the staff are always kind and ready to help!

Yelp
I arrived at Maman's Union Market location around 10:30 AM on a Saturday and the place was already packed with people in the upstairs, downstairs, and outdoor seating areas. FOOD I ordered "Papa's Breakfast Bowl," which includes roasted potatoes, sautéed kale, bacon, caramelized onions, avocado, chipotle aioli, and a sunny-side-up egg. I chose to skip the aioli and have my egg scrambled instead. I also ordered an iced coffee with a shot of espresso. After placing my order, I took a number and scouted out a table where I could settle in while waiting for my meal. I initially settled on a table on the second floor, but it was wobbly. I relocated to the first available table, which happened to be the first one at the top of the stairs. While this spot was less than ideal, it offered a bird's eye view of the first floor. My order was brought to me within ten minutes and I thoroughly enjoyed the healthy, satisfying meal. The coffee was smooth and flavorful. I consider it a good sign when I can drink my coffee black without any additives. ATMOSPHERE The atmosphere at Maman was lively, with pop music pulsing and a constant hum of conversation filling the air. While too loud for focused work, I noticed a few people using their laptops. Free Wi-Fi is available, so it might suit those who don't mind a noisy environment. Unfortunately, the unisex bathroom downstairs was in a less-than-ideal state, overflowing with trash. VERDICT I enjoyed my meal and the the pleasant service at Maman; however, the condition of the bathroom left much to be desired. I hope they take steps to improve this aspect to match the quality of the dining experience.

Yelp
I've had some food from Maman before and I wasn't impressed. Last week I decided to give their food another shot as I met with a friend and my feelings have changed. If you're getting breakfast from Maman's hands down get their breakfast potato bowl. It's a good portion of food and the flavors are there. The cafe is beautiful, especially the one here in NOMA with all of the florals inside and outside. There's plenty of seating and water jars to refill your cups all around the cafe. Our cashier was super friendly and funny. I'll be back

Yelp
Maman is super cute French bakery that has location throughout the DC area. I went in the morning during a week day, and it was pretty busy with people meeting up for lunch or working from home. The aesthetic is very pleasing as you can see from the pictures. The seating choices across the restaurant is pretty diverse and well spread out - most of the tables are four seats or more. There's additional seating options upstairs and one side of the restaurant has like-lounging chairs were people can enjoy their coffees and lunches. I got an order of the maman breakfast sandwich added bacon, as well as a side of potato. The sandwich was mouthwatering and exactly what I needed to start of my day. Check them out!

Yelp
Maman at Union Market was one of My favorite cafes in DC. The vibe, ambience, decoration, music really set the mood. The place is pretty big with an outside patio area, downstairs, and upstairs. I ordered the breakfast sandwich and chocolate chip cookie, pistachio croissant. This was hands down the best dessert/ pastries I had in D.C. the cookie was thin, crispy edges and gooey center what more could you ask for in a cookie? The pistachio crossaint was flaky with pistachio butter that was rich. My breakfast sandwich was just right and a flavor bomb. This place has me craving the cookies. Would 100% visit again if I'm back in the area.

Yelp
Turkey club is sooo yummy! Cortado was delicious. Service was good too but the ambiance is what makes this place! Such a cute spot!
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
I totally get why this place is always so busy. Great cold brew and the pastry options are endless. They did a great job with the décor. I would visit regularly because they offer more than coffee and pastries. They also have other food items on the menu. Located near union market. Parking can be tough in this area.
google avatar

Ashley J.

Yelp
This shop is so cute with so many options of pastries and drinks. I was shocked at the amazing options that were presented and ended up choosing about 5 pastries, I couldn't control myself. The cashier was so funny and kind and really made the experience that much better
google avatar

Jamie G.

Yelp
Now THIS is probably my favorite union market spot. Now, during the weekend, it's packed but on a good week day it's quiet enough to work, read, or just relax. My go-to dish: the papa breakfast bowl. It's the perfect hangover cure and a nice filling breakfast for any day. If you like Tatte, you'll definitely love Maman.
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
Maman never disappoints! Between the cute, fairytale aesthetic and the scrumptious pastries, it's a cafe-lover's paradise. I had the honey lavender latte (iced), which is just soo good! I also had a lemon poppy tea cake. The tea cake was delicious and I savored every bite. My husband had the rhubarb bar, which he liked but didn't love. He actually thought maybe it was sitting out for too long. However, his salad was amazing and had a huge serving of avocado and salmon. The food has been incredible every time I come to Maman. This was my first time at this location, and I was pleased with the service, the food and the atmosphere. It is also conveniently located near Union Market.
google avatar

Samantha K.

Yelp
We stopped in Maman after going to Union Market. Maman is a French coffee shop with pastries and small meals. Each location is well decorated but the greenery and floral theme of this location is my favorite. We ordered iced coffee, peach mango tea, a crème brûlée cookie and a brownie. My friend loved the peach mango tea. I got my iced coffee with a flavor shot for .50 extra (options were vanilla, caramel, and honey lavender). The crème brûlée cookie was good but not great, recommend a chocolate chip cookie instead. The brownie was fudge filled and flavorful. The employees we interacted seemed very nice. When the line got 2-3 parties long, the employees immediately opened a register to help.
google avatar

Marisa A.

Yelp
Excellent location for Union market browsing. The latest time I went was a Saturday afternoon. I grabbed the pistachio caramel brioche pastry and a macchiato. My partner got a hot chai latte with an espresso shot and banana bread. It was excellent. The shop is very ascetically pleasing with greenery and antique gorgeous pottery coffee/tea cups (along with to go options which is what I got). There is a main floor as well as upstairs seating. This is a busy place that is common for folks to work, congregate, relax, and enjoy cocktails, tea, coffee, pastry, food, you name it. I enjoy myself each time I go.
google avatar

Anj P.

Yelp
vibes are incredibly cute. there's another location opening up in mosaic and i can't wait for that. i got the pistachio chocolate cappuccino and it was yum. not too bitter not too sweet, the flavors tasted perfectly balanced. lavender hot chocolate was also so good. definitely want to go back and check out more places
google avatar

Yelp
Went for an afternoon treat to take a break from work. Tried the tea cake which was extra moist and flavorful. Also got a hibiscus tea which was refreshing. The service was great, very welcoming. There was ample seating and a 2nd level of seating. The decor is beautiful! Transports me to France.

Yelp
I came to visit the Union Market area and wanted to grab something to wake me up. I came upon Maman and appreciated the cozy and cute decor and atmosphere. There were a decent amount of people working remotely inside. I ordered a seasonal item, the Sakura Blossom Matcha Latte and a coconut oatmeal cookie, along with a coffee with shot of espresso and almond milk for my brother. The matcha latte was delicious, it was light and floral. The cookie tasted like it's been sitting out all day, but I still enjoyed it. It had a thick and chewy texture, which I loved. The service is what made my visit a bit off putting. We were the only ones in line/ordering at the time and the cashier was unfriendly but nothing to complain over. When we went to pick up my drink the person making our drink was also unfriendly and presented us with attitude. When he called my name, he also gave me this weird disgusted look and I was just hoping it was unrelated to me? My brother's coffee did not include the almond milk and so he asks "may I have some almond milk added?" to which the worker replies, "say the magic word" and then my brother says "please?" - it felt very condescending and odd, but we just brushed it off. Weird experience here but hopefully it was just an off day for those specific workers. I would still try maman again but maybe a different location.

Nhi N.

Yelp
Got two pastries and two drinks, the blueberry latte and papaya matcha lemonade. The pastries weren't crispy at all and only satisfied me looks wise. While the square pineapple pastry has a beautiful filling that's delicious, the pastry itself lacks flakey and buttery layers and instead tastes like it was left out all day. The passionfruit beach hall has an awful filling that was way too sour and pungent to be in a delicate pastry (which, like the other was lacking flavor and texture) the drinks were lacking sweetness and were bad quality. The matcha lemonade tasted bitter as if the lemons were cut in half and left in the fridge for two weeks. The blueberry latte was bitter on the back end as it had a burnt flavor and lacked blueberry flavor. The music doesn't match the ambiance and the tables were not being cleaned in a timely manner. However, this was during peak rush hour and understandably the workers may have been overwhelmed while making drinks. I may try a different location when it is less busy to give this location a fair chance. The interior design is beautiful and would've been more welcoming had the music been different. The flavors are innovative and unique but would've been better if executed properly. Matcha had very little excuses for being so so horrible. Visually the cafe is outstanding and visually so are the pastries, but the beauty ends there.

Yelp
Back again and they don't miss! This pecan pie latte is amazingly flavored and with it being fall season they have a few fall inspired desserts and my choice today was the pistachio and orange olive oil cake! It was beautiful and tasted so good and it shocked me that the flavors overwhelmed each other dnd his the orange flavor sneaks through on the back end. Definitely a well made dessert. And of course as always the staff was nice and very welcoming!
google avatar

Dirk A.

Yelp
Unbearable heat in this place. The A/C is completely ineffective. Don't even bother. There are also birds inside (some that touch the pastries being sold) because the doors are left open (due to lack of A/C).
google avatar

Maggie M.

Yelp
I just went here for the first time for breakfast and LOVED it! First of all, the decor is adorable. I love the flowers, the lovely blue and white tableware, the trellises - delightful. Second, the food was great. I got the ratatouille with eggs and my mom got the breakfast sandwich. We also shared a blueberry goat cheese scone. My only note was that I wished they'd warmed up the scone because it was cold but it was still delicious. I'll definitely be back here!
google avatar

Lily K.

Yelp
All their pastries have been excellent! They have such a variety, and good lunch food too. Plus the inside is so pretty and flowery. A bit loud for WFH, but lovely
google avatar

Yelp
French elegance and beautiful decor. This place is a vibe!!! The service is fast, the coffee is delicious and the staff is so kind. A great place to get a perfectly crafted oat milk latte.

Yelp
If you're looking for a better option for coffee/pastry in the union market area, Maman should definitely be on your list! I came on Sunday early afternoon and it was very busy. There was a bit of a line for me to order, and an even longer line when I left. I don't think it's the kind of place you go if you're in a rush or getting a coffee to go as it takes a bit of time to receive your order. For food, we got the ratatouille (only available on weekends) and club sandwich. The ratatouille was really delicious and flavorful and a good portion size. The club sandwich was good as well. I got an iced vanilla latte which was delicious, I saw they had some good looking seasonal drinks but I didn't see it until after I ordered at the register (I'll need to go back to try). We also tried a s'mores cookie which was the star of the show. It was pretty pricey for a "fast casual" kind of place, ~$60 for two people. The cons - very busy and finding seating was tough, even for two people. The couple of tables that were open had leftover food/drinks so we weren't able to sit there and ended up sitting on two stools at the upper level. It was also pretty hot inside, at least on the upper level. Food/drink takes a while but we weren't in a rush so it wasn't a huge deal but something to keep in mind. It would be good to have some napkins on the table or silverware on the upper level, I had to find a server for silverware/napkins after receiving my food.

Yelp
Cute spot nearby Union Market with food options, bakery and several selections of coffee lattes. Love that they offer pistachios, as a non milk option. Felt like I was in NY. There are a lot of easy fixes that the owner need to take president over such as: - Ordering. It takes a while to receive small orders after paying like something as simple as an ice late with milk - No soap (see picture) in the bathroom to wash your hands. Makes me concerned about the staff - No outlets except 2 on the first floor. I had a difficult time to free up space to charge my computer or phone. Pros - tasty coffee - several selection from people who like sweet non sugar lattes - many non milk options (love that they serve pistachios non dairy options outside of oatmilk Cons - service is extremely slow. Especially for people just ordering iced lattes and nothing else. Should be served quickly - dirty bathroom with no soap - not a work from home place. Only 2 outlets facing towards the doorway.

Yelp
My friend and I stopped here after we visited Union Market. I had the peach mango green iced tea which had a nice flavor and wasn't too sweet. My friend and I shared a Nutella brownie which was fudgy and delicious. We also shared a crème brûlée cookie that was okay, it wasn't too flavorful. The inside and outside of this cafe are super cute, there is a bunch of flowers hanging from the ceiling. They had plenty of seating, they even have a loft with extra seating. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Diep L.

Yelp
This place is very cute and has a cute aesthetic. There were a lot of options for pastries. However, the croissant that I got was only ok. The service was good! I think for the area that this location was in there are a lot of other better options for pastries!
google avatar

Michele E.

Yelp
The service was really great! the front counter lady and the barista were both helpful, kind, and very friendly. The coffee (a plain latte and a dirty chai) was not that great. The chai was bland at best and the latte was more on the burnt bitter side. WE also bough at assortment of baked goods. The chive cheddar scone was overly dry, the puff pastry on the ham and cheese, the turkey and goat cheese, and the chocolate croissant were crispy, but super dry, as if all the butter ran out in the course of baking. Because of the great service, I would try it again, but for the coffee and baked goods I wouldn't give it a second chance.
google avatar

Christine M.

Yelp
such a cute place and the workers were hard at work and very friendly. sadly we spent about $90 and didn't have a place to sit. so that was the big bummer - there was five of us and our fault for not finding a seat before ordering but it was crowded with lap top workers. So get a place to sit if you're wanting to enjoy the Ambiance. Chai was ok, needs a bit more spice. Sandwiches was very good and filling, i'm a light eater so i shared with friend and it was perfect! It's cute just get a spot! major bummer no photos cuz we sat outside and the outdoor seats were falling apart and it was not the best experience.

Yelp
I stopped in here on a Sunday at noon! I was immediately blown away by the bright space, high ceilings, floral decor and many seating options (high tops, couches, tables and a loft area). I approached the counter to check out the menu and get a few recommendations. After speaking with the cashier I went with the breakfast bowl and the seasonal latte. I snagged a seat at a couch in the front. My food came out in about 5 minutes. I didn't realize I had to get my own utensils and water so after tracking that down I was able to dig in. The bowl was a large portion full of potatoes, caramelized onions, bacon, chopped kale, runny egg and avocado and topped with an aioli. Overall the bowl was great while I had to add some salt & pepper it was definitely a great choice. I do think there could have been more kale. It took over 10 minutes for the latte to come out, but it was worth the wait. The latte was served in a beautiful mug with the perfect amount of foam and flavor, it was such an unexpected treat. The small was actually quite large so I wish I had ordered it to go, but I was able to sit & savor it for a little while. I loved my first trip to Maman and look forward to returning for lunch or maybe a work session in the loft.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful cafe for just a moment of stillness over tea and pastry. Perfect to sit, read, and just be. Great vegan options, not enough gluten free though.

Yelp
I love maman! The decor and natural sunlight makes it an amazing place to work from and the coffee is divine.

Shanell M.

Yelp
Adorable decor, appealing menu and quick service. Candidly I was drawn to this cafe because the outside seemed inviting. I was pleasantly surprised by the extensive menu of coffee/tea, breakfast and lunch items, as well as pastries. I was feeling pretty hungry and opted for the Papa's Breakfast Bowl. Unfortunately there was so much chipotle aioli that it was difficult to enjoy. Next time I'll ask for it on the side. I also ordered the ice matcha latte with almond milk.

Yelp
On Monday this business decided to open during a snow storm And they weren't accommodating to their employees who had to get there through the snow.
google avatar

Calder S.

Yelp
Maman is still bad. I had the Vanilla Mango Croissant Roll (seasonal) which was "croissant roll filled with vanilla mousseline & mango, topped with a sweet flower" for $6.50. Also the Almond Croissant "classic croissant filled with frangipane & topped with sliced almonds & powdered sugar" for $5. Neither were worth it. The croissant roll was all style and no substance. I started to doubt it had any filling inside because it was so light and it took me so many bites to reach any filling. It was difficult to eat and balance the flavors in each bite. The pastry just tasted like bland bread. The filling was decent when I actually got some. As for the almond croissant, it was embarrassingly flat and also tasted burnt. It was visibly burnt on the edges. For shame.

Yelp
So cozy and enchanting, like you've stepped into a French countryside fairyland. With the high ceilings and winding vines, visitors feel diminutive, but in a good way. I ordered the mango croissant and an almond milk latte. The mango croissant had lost its crispiness and I was hoping for more mango flavor. The almond latte was perfect and refreshing on a warm day. Several people were working at the many rough hewn tables so the Wi-Fi must be solid too.
