A Surge of New French Restaurants Floods the D.C. Market | Eater DC

"Expanding the brand in D.C., Maman also debuted a Union Market location that keeps the Southern France–inspired, floral café vibe and the same menu staples—daily quiche, weekend ratatouille, make-your-own omelettes, croissants, pain au chocolat—and the cult-favorite nutty chocolate chip cookie." - Tierney Plumb

French Cafe Maman Doubles Down on D.C. With Georgetown and Union Market Arrivals | Eater DC

"In contrast, the Union Market location at 1300 4th Street NE embraces an industrial, new-build aesthetic: a stenciled staircase and floor and an indoor pergola covered in florals aim to create a “warm, enchanted, getaway vibe,” even as the team navigates the challenge of translating Maman’s homey, detail-oriented brand into a very different architectural shell. The Union Market shop will act as the commissary kitchen supporting the Bethesda and Georgetown locations as well as its own operations, feature sizable event space (about 150 standing, 40 seated), and carry limited-edition to-go cup designs—including Michael Crossett’s layered digital images of D.C. landmarks—while sitting adjacent to food halls and other neighborhood coffee shops." - Emily Wishingrad

Chloe Fineman’s Grub Street Diet

"A café whose 'Juliette' — actually a hot steak sandwich on ciabatta with sun-dried tomato aioli — is deceptively dainty in presentation but substantial and a current favorite of the writer." - Rima Parikh, Margalit Cutler

Stopped in with family on a Saturday morning. Around 930 or so it started getting busy but staff kept the line moving. The blueberry latte and mocha were so so good. Loved the banana bread too. The place is spacious with a really nice, calming interior. The staff were insanely helpful and kind. Hard recommend. We'll be back.

I guess I’ve been under a rock, but I had no idea Martha Stewart had a cafe. It is so cute (of course)! But then, I think any place that has decaf Lavendar lattes with oat milk is a dream. I’m in town visiting and a barista named Justice made both of lattes during my visit here. Both were divine - I think I may get one to go for my short trip to the airport 😁😁🙌 Thank you Justice! ☺️

Google
I ordered the avocado toast and really enjoyed it—it was fresh, flavorful, and nicely prepared. I appreciated the thoughtful touch of having salt and pepper on the side, and the thinly diced tomatoes and onions added a nice balance. The service was straightforward: you place your own order, take a number, and the food is brought to your table. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere is great—spacious, warm, and inviting, with a cute design that makes it feel comfortable and welcoming.

Google
The food here was really delicious, and the service from Leila was excellent—she kindly helped us find a seat and made us feel welcome. The pastries are outstanding, the coffee is great, and overall the food is very, very good. The only things I would mention are that the bathrooms could be a bit cleaner, and since the place is usually quite busy, you should plan to spend some time looking for a table if you’re planning to eat in. Still, it’s definitely worth it for the quality of the food and the friendly service.

Google
My friends and I love coming here. The food is always good. The ambiance is lovely and warm. Laila was so knowledgeable about the menu and was SUCH a beautiful spirit. She took our order, gave us suggestions, AND was able to enlighten me about the espresso in the drinks so I could get my fix adequately.

Google
Best breakfast we have had in a while. Service friendly and efficient. No paper cups, plates or plastic knife and forks. Lots ofGF options. Coffee very good for those that care. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. Pastries looked yum!

Shai S.

Google
Love the aesthetics in the coffee shop and how everything is presented. Crystal was really amazing! She took care of us and she went above and beyond with her service to make sure we had everything that we needed and we understood the menu.

Vesna V.

Google
I ordered an espresso, but got something that clearly wasn't one. Doesn't even look like it, let alone taste. It felt more like a leftover Turkish coffee sediment. So either fix your machine, or build barista skills. The cookie was good, though.

Yelp
We've come here several times and we're always pleased with our order. Today, we had the absolute pleasure of chatting up with Piola behind the register. You ever ask the waitress or cashier what's their fav things on the menu and you can tell that their response might be based on just upselling or moving you right along? This was NOT that. Our girl pointed out several items that she liked to get AND helped us customize each item--eg I like to get the sauce on the side, add chicken, add potatoes. It was honestly such a good interaction to start off our day and breakfast meal together. We cleared our plates, left no crumbs--ok wait I lied, I didn't finish the second half of my wrap and took it home lol. But you get the picture! Service great, food and bevs even better.

Yelp
ambiance was great. maman interiors are always beautiful. for the baristas. please make sure to shake the oat milk when serving drinks. this goes for all alternative milks. i paid $7 for a chai latte that tasted like pure oat water. it was thrown away.
google avatar

Yelp
I went here because the ambiance looked nice but the experience was not great. I spent nearly $80 on two omelets that were extremely greasy and oily (we asked for them plain, but for some reason they were soaked in balsamic vinegar), potatoes that were soggy and cold and tasted like they were microwaved (different from the potatoes I've seen in others' pictures on Yelp), bacon that dripped grease, and the tiniest two pieces of toast. On top of that, the server was not nice. I asked for an extra plate and she rolled her eyes and never brought it for me. I'm not sure what the enchantment with this place is.

Yelp
This is such a cute little spot to meet with friends and chat! We had the lavender hot chocolate and it was life changing! Soooooo goood! The staff was nice and constantly cleaning and helping.

Yelp
My first experience with this chain didn't go especially well, but I found an occasion to try a new location for them in the increasingly crowded Union Market district. It is separate from the major food halls and has its own two-level space. The baked goods looked appealing and I did succumb to a banana bread with walnuts and dark chocolate chips, but what I came for was a salad. Their hummus salad had marinated carrots and in general a mild set of sweet, savory, and sour flavors. They describe it as Morrocan, and the restaurant as a whole is somewhat French-inflected, so I was happy to find something that was labeled and was vegan and gluten free, which can be a challenge for this sort of cuisine. It's an upscale place with an upscale price. The service I received was on the front end a bit disaffected and on the back end confused; despite having a table number someone apparently struggled to get that I was seated at one of their outdoor tables. But there is some quality to be found here and it's a different flavor than in the other options in this area.

Yelp
Wildly busy place. My pumpkin spice iced latte was quite tasty, but my pistachio croissant had a lot of filling in it which wasn't great. The lunch sandwiches people had looked super tasty.

Yelp
I frequent this maman whenever I want a chill place to enjoy a drink, like the matcha latte, or some pastries. Although I order a la carte usually, my latest visit was a TooGoodToGo pick up. For 6.59, I got the three pastries (attached photo) near their closing time. Luckily, these were the three pastries that I wanted! Super lucky. They all tasted fine despite the late pick up time, and glad I did the experience. Whenever I go to Maman, including this latest visit, the service was quick and friendly. The employees make sure I have a positive visit and the place keeps on drawing me back. This Maman fits well in this area, and I'm glad this Maman is accessible whenever I crave a sweet treat.

Yelp
This is one of the cutest cafes I've been to and I see why it's packed. I hesitantly ordered the salted tahini latte (trying something new) and the waffles and bacon. I'm so glad the risk paid off. The seeds are not needed but still a good latte. I was also pleasantly surprised with the waffle topped with guava jam. I originally asked for it on the side but it was served on top. It was sooo good! I'm glad when these kind of mistakes happen. I'm a sucker for the hanging plants so decor was an added bonus!

Yelp
The cutest cafe! Came on a Sunday afternoon and it was packed, which makes sense considering how much space they have. We were able to snag a table upstairs which would make a great remote work location if you find an outlet. My sandwich was lacking flavor, maybe more sauce would've helped. But enjoyed the coffee and mimosa. Would definitely come back to try some pastries.

Yelp
Cute Maman location in NoMa! Came here with friends a few times to get brunch. They have a lovely menu that changes each season along with a variety of pastries and drinks. This location is beautiful, but does lack enough service to meet all customer needs - getting water to your table, etc. You have to bus yourself and seating is hard to come by. Overall, solid Maman that could use some improvements on their customer service.
google avatar

Camille A.

Yelp
Cute, bright and cozy cafe! Enjoyed stopped by for a quick bite. We tried the breakfast bowl and almond croissant. While the flavors of the bowl were great, it could use a larger portion of eggs since you get so many potatoes. The croissant was pretty good and went great with my flat white. Their vanilla honeycomb latte was so yummy. The cashier was very friendly and helpful! Highly recommend for a nice WFH cafe.

Yelp
I didn't expect to enjoy this place as much as I did. I've always wondered what their food was like, so I popped in for a quick breakfast date before yoga with flow well yoga. I was so impressed. The food, itself, was delicious. It was a little bit busy on a Sunday morning, but we were still able to find seats and the service moved pretty quickly. I also ordered an iced chai and a chocolate chip cookie with nuts. The chai was fine, but not my favorite. However, everything else was absolutely great. I didn't eat the entire bowl there and then, but I ate it it the next day and it was still just as good. For one drink, two bowls, and the cookie, we spent just over $50. But honestly, the bowls were pretty big and overall, I would say it was worth it. It's a very cute café vibe. Cute and casual. You can roll in with sweatpants or a cute little dress and honestly fit right in. I can't wait to come back and try something else.
google avatar

Yelp
This is the cutest little cafe with very pretty decor. I've been here a few times, and each time had a crowd, but my order always came out fairly quickly. They have a variety of pastries that all look really tasty. I've tried their blueberry, cheese & thyme scone, as well as their chocolate chip and nut cookie. Both were great. I've also tried their chai latte in both hot and iced, and I always get it with oat milk. Also tastes very good. Although the barista put an excessive amount of cinnamon on my hot chai, but nonetheless, it was still a good drink.
google avatar

Ameena A.

Yelp
Service: wonderful and super friendly, despite how busy it was and the line I was in to get food/drink! Drinks: super delicious, and loved the "spring specials" (I got a matcha special). Although I didn't get food, I had no clue that they had so many gluten free options, so I will definitely be back when I'm in union market to try a snack or little meal! Ambiance: so cute, and surprisingly, pretty spacious (although I've heard that space can be limited bc of how popular this place is).
google avatar

Denise Z.

Yelp
I'd start by saying the girl working near closing was extremely rude! I asked a few questions being it was my first time and the girl just ignored me! The cookies tasted burnt. I got a chocolate chip and a s'mores. I'd rather go to the market next time. The place is really pretty, such a shame.

Vac S.

Yelp
Visited for the first time for lunch. I got a Matcha with pumpkin amazing flavor and beautifully presented. Then we ordered steak sandwiches and they accommodated my dairy and gluten allergies. It was delicious. I can't recommend this place enough. a nice cozy atmosphere as well. I will definitely be coming back..

Yelp
Neighborhood coffee and cafe gem! Maman is the perfect little spot to grab a coffee with a friend or quick sandwich for lunch. From the pastries to the drinks to the food, I haven't had anything bad from here. The honey lavender latte is my favorite drink and Papa's breakfast bowl is my go to meal. On top of good food, the staff are kind and attentive. Laila has served me before and she provides good suggestions.
google avatar

Tyler G.

Yelp
Maman's was a great start to a D.C. weekend. The line moves fast, so don't fret. Be prepared to share a table or get treats to go. Both the macchiato and iced coffee were delicious. We also shared a steak sandwich and iced olive oil cake. Beautiful space and great service!

Sarah R.

Yelp
Expensive but pastries are amazing and very creative, I try to make a point to try one whenever I'm in the area!
google avatar

Laura G.

Yelp
Love maman! Wonderful pastries and coffee drinks. I especially enjoy trying their seasonal drinks that are always interesting and delicious. I've also taken my gluten-free friend here and she was really happy to find something yummy (I believe she got the shashuka with gluten free bread on the side). It's a really nice combo of laid back coffee house vibes but more upscale food and pastries. My fav - the Nutella beignet
google avatar

Fatu D.

Yelp
I love coming to maman. It's close to my neighborhood and has become one of my favorite coffee shops. Fair warning that this place is ALWAYS packed, especially during the weekends. While there is an upstairs and downstairs, seats are first come first serve and definitely feels like the hunger games. The decor is adorable and has images of the founders and their grandkids sprinkled throughout. I try to switch up what I order each time but I recently got mamas breakfast sandwich and it's delicious! The brioche bread with the caramelized onions absolutely does something to me. Honestly may be my favorite item on the menu thus far. Outside of their coffee options, they have a nice selection of teas.
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
Overall, I really like this place! I went here to get a little bit of work done. I will say that they don't have a ton of outlets so I had to share. They have a nice lower level and then an upper level that you can go to as well. The seating is very whimsical and cute and dainty. They ran out of the pastries that I wanted to get by the time I was there so I ended up with this blueberry thyme goat cheese scone. I didn't quite love it, but I appreciated the artistry of it. It was a little bit hard and I wish it was a little bit softer to the touch. Overall, the service was really good and the person that I had helped me was really great. Off the strength of the service and the aesthetic alone. I would definitely return here.
google avatar

Chrissy S.

Yelp
Food is pretty tasty tbh, service is good, ambience is nice for working from home not too noisy.
google avatar

Trisha C.

Yelp
I came here with a friend right when it opened. Of note, at 7:30AM (opening time), they have the croissants available, but it is not until 8AM (on weekdays), that the kitchen is opened. I got their specialty latte, which is a cardamon latte. I am not a coffee fan, but I love the spice added to the latte. I also got their andrea's everything croissant & salmon sandwich, which is like a bagel with salmon and cream cheese, but instead of a bagel, it is on a very fresh, flaky, buttery croissant. It was a bit salty given all the smoked salmon, but it just means they did not shy away from giving you the salmon. Our hostess, Paola was amazing in answering our questions, and the interior decoration was so cute! I will definitely come back to try some of their other items.
google avatar

Christine P.

Yelp
Oh maman. I love this cafe and most especially the baked goods. The interior is cozy and inviting, where you order on the right side as you walk in. We ordered a couple of hot drinks and a lemon raspberry loaf cake. It was a generous slice and all the ingredients complemented each other perfectly. Worth the price!! Tucked away in the redone shops in the union market area, this is a great addition!!
google avatar

Brianna T.

Yelp
It's a bit pricey, but I have yet to try something here I don't like! The inside is very pretty, and there's lots of seating. And the staff are always kind and ready to help!
google avatar

Rena E.

Yelp
At this point, I think I have visited all of the Maman locations in DC. It is amazing that each location has been consistent in terms of ambiance, service and beverage quality. One of the things that I truly like about these cafes is that they all have aesthetic similarities, yet are different at the same time. I love the aesthetic at all locations and this one was no different. I have never actually had their food, but I always order the same matcha beverage and sometimes a vegan cookie.
google avatar

Diane B.

Yelp
A beautiful floral themed, French inspired bakery by Union Market. The pastries are freshly baked, and the nutty chocolate chip cookie which was featured on Oprah's Favorite Things, is a must try. The everything croissant is a show stopper, as are the other variations of croissants and seasonal cruffins.
google avatar

Tamara M.

Yelp
Ended up here after buying a latte somewhere else that was less than great! So glad this was steps away to replace my previous order. This latte was perfect! Assuming I caught the rush, the wait was a bit long but totally worth it. Maman's aesthetic is so sweet and very cutesy. Next time, I'd love to sit and experience their dine-in services as I observed other customers who seemed to have wonderful entrées being delivered to their tables. Do: sit in and enjoy your meal! Don't: stand at the counter like I did. Looked like a total newbie until I realized they had seating for takeout orders.
google avatar

Deseri T.

Yelp
Let me start off with Brittany at the register this morning! So kind, such great energy! The service was quick. Breakfast sandwich and coffee were amazing, def recommend. Love a good cold brew. I'm used to the locations in NYC that are sit down service, this location you order at the counter and sit (don't know if this is just for breakfast). I was staying in the neighborhood for a night glad I came here. Also many folks working from the space so it's a good location for that as well. Will be back!
google avatar

Amanda F.

Yelp
My go-to spots for a pastry. This French-inspired cafe is such a fan favorite, we take all our out of town guests here! The service is always so great too. This location does tend to be a bit hot so in the warmer months, plan to dress light and maybe sit outside! But grab yourself a pastry (all are amazing) and an iced chia tea latte and you'll be such a happy camper!
google avatar

Maria Gracias H.

Yelp
Super cute café with a cozy, rustic French vibe--wish I took more pics to show it off! The coffee was great, and the pastries were on point. The pistachio croissant was absolutely amazing, and the chocolate chip cookie came out warm and freshly baked. Just a heads-up: there was a long line and it was tough to find a table on a Saturday morning.
google avatar

Natalie M.

Yelp
I arrived at Maman's Union Market location around 10:30 AM on a Saturday and the place was already packed with people in the upstairs, downstairs, and outdoor seating areas. FOOD I ordered "Papa's Breakfast Bowl," which includes roasted potatoes, sautéed kale, bacon, caramelized onions, avocado, chipotle aioli, and a sunny-side-up egg. I chose to skip the aioli and have my egg scrambled instead. I also ordered an iced coffee with a shot of espresso. After placing my order, I took a number and scouted out a table where I could settle in while waiting for my meal. I initially settled on a table on the second floor, but it was wobbly. I relocated to the first available table, which happened to be the first one at the top of the stairs. While this spot was less than ideal, it offered a bird's eye view of the first floor. My order was brought to me within ten minutes and I thoroughly enjoyed the healthy, satisfying meal. The coffee was smooth and flavorful. I consider it a good sign when I can drink my coffee black without any additives. ATMOSPHERE The atmosphere at Maman was lively, with pop music pulsing and a constant hum of conversation filling the air. While too loud for focused work, I noticed a few people using their laptops. Free Wi-Fi is available, so it might suit those who don't mind a noisy environment. Unfortunately, the unisex bathroom downstairs was in a less-than-ideal state, overflowing with trash. VERDICT I enjoyed my meal and the the pleasant service at Maman; however, the condition of the bathroom left much to be desired. I hope they take steps to improve this aspect to match the quality of the dining experience.
google avatar

Kaya E.

Yelp
I've had some food from Maman before and I wasn't impressed. Last week I decided to give their food another shot as I met with a friend and my feelings have changed. If you're getting breakfast from Maman's hands down get their breakfast potato bowl. It's a good portion of food and the flavors are there. The cafe is beautiful, especially the one here in NOMA with all of the florals inside and outside. There's plenty of seating and water jars to refill your cups all around the cafe. Our cashier was super friendly and funny. I'll be back
google avatar

Daniela N.

Yelp
Maman is super cute French bakery that has location throughout the DC area. I went in the morning during a week day, and it was pretty busy with people meeting up for lunch or working from home. The aesthetic is very pleasing as you can see from the pictures. The seating choices across the restaurant is pretty diverse and well spread out - most of the tables are four seats or more. There's additional seating options upstairs and one side of the restaurant has like-lounging chairs were people can enjoy their coffees and lunches. I got an order of the maman breakfast sandwich added bacon, as well as a side of potato. The sandwich was mouthwatering and exactly what I needed to start of my day. Check them out!
google avatar

Isaac K.

Yelp
Maman at Union Market was one of My favorite cafes in DC. The vibe, ambience, decoration, music really set the mood. The place is pretty big with an outside patio area, downstairs, and upstairs. I ordered the breakfast sandwich and chocolate chip cookie, pistachio croissant. This was hands down the best dessert/ pastries I had in D.C. the cookie was thin, crispy edges and gooey center what more could you ask for in a cookie? The pistachio crossaint was flaky with pistachio butter that was rich. My breakfast sandwich was just right and a flavor bomb. This place has me craving the cookies. Would 100% visit again if I'm back in the area.
google avatar

Bobbi D.

Yelp
Turkey club is sooo yummy! Cortado was delicious. Service was good too but the ambiance is what makes this place! Such a cute spot!
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
I totally get why this place is always so busy. Great cold brew and the pastry options are endless. They did a great job with the décor. I would visit regularly because they offer more than coffee and pastries. They also have other food items on the menu. Located near union market. Parking can be tough in this area.
google avatar

Ashley J.

Yelp
This shop is so cute with so many options of pastries and drinks. I was shocked at the amazing options that were presented and ended up choosing about 5 pastries, I couldn't control myself. The cashier was so funny and kind and really made the experience that much better

Ron T.

Yelp
I ordered the salmon salad and ended up with food poisoning. I'm experiencing a fever and diarrhea. I should have listened to my instincts next time. The dishes I was served were dirty, and when I mentioned it to the server, she simply gave me a dismissive look and walked away. I did NOT eat all the salmon, as it was served in one large piece. There was no effort made to present it in an appealing way. This isn't just about presentation; it's a health issue. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! All I wanted was a healthy salad, and instead, I ended up with food poisoning. NEVER AGAIN!
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
Maman never disappoints! Between the cute, fairytale aesthetic and the scrumptious pastries, it's a cafe-lover's paradise. I had the honey lavender latte (iced), which is just soo good! I also had a lemon poppy tea cake. The tea cake was delicious and I savored every bite. My husband had the rhubarb bar, which he liked but didn't love. He actually thought maybe it was sitting out for too long. However, his salad was amazing and had a huge serving of avocado and salmon. The food has been incredible every time I come to Maman. This was my first time at this location, and I was pleased with the service, the food and the atmosphere. It is also conveniently located near Union Market.
google avatar

Jamie G.

Yelp
Now THIS is probably my favorite union market spot. Now, during the weekend, it's packed but on a good week day it's quiet enough to work, read, or just relax. My go-to dish: the papa breakfast bowl. It's the perfect hangover cure and a nice filling breakfast for any day. If you like Tatte, you'll definitely love Maman.
google avatar

Ben W.

Yelp
This location struggles badly with order logistics. There seems to be massive confusion when you've ordered something from the kitchen, a pastry and a coffee ( especially a drip or iced coffee). There seems to be little or no coordination between the various stations.
google avatar

Samantha K.

Yelp
We stopped in Maman after going to Union Market. Maman is a French coffee shop with pastries and small meals. Each location is well decorated but the greenery and floral theme of this location is my favorite. We ordered iced coffee, peach mango tea, a crème brûlée cookie and a brownie. My friend loved the peach mango tea. I got my iced coffee with a flavor shot for .50 extra (options were vanilla, caramel, and honey lavender). The crème brûlée cookie was good but not great, recommend a chocolate chip cookie instead. The brownie was fudge filled and flavorful. The employees we interacted seemed very nice. When the line got 2-3 parties long, the employees immediately opened a register to help.
google avatar

Marisa A.

Yelp
Excellent location for Union market browsing. The latest time I went was a Saturday afternoon. I grabbed the pistachio caramel brioche pastry and a macchiato. My partner got a hot chai latte with an espresso shot and banana bread. It was excellent. The shop is very ascetically pleasing with greenery and antique gorgeous pottery coffee/tea cups (along with to go options which is what I got). There is a main floor as well as upstairs seating. This is a busy place that is common for folks to work, congregate, relax, and enjoy cocktails, tea, coffee, pastry, food, you name it. I enjoy myself each time I go.
google avatar

Cynthia E.

Yelp
Came in right before closing, service was amazing. Chocolate crossiant was delicious. Big shoutout to my server Layla, who was very patient, polite and helpful.

Nina W.

Yelp
Great ambiance relaxed and cozy decor. Lots of great food options and bakery options. Had a hot London fog, egg white omelette and splurged with a peaches and cream danish which was great and not too sweet . Service was both prompt and friendly will definitely return for another visit.
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
This cafe chain is gorgeous, and the food is pretty decent but unfortunately our experience here has been so mixed. Sometimes this service is good but other times there have been issues. Once we waited watching people who came after get their food before us. When we addressed it with the person at the counter, they acted like it was our fault. Another time, we got the completely wrong meal. 2/4 being positive.
google avatar

Leroy R.

Yelp
Went for an afternoon treat to take a break from work. Tried the tea cake which was extra moist and flavorful. Also got a hibiscus tea which was refreshing. The service was great, very welcoming. There was ample seating and a 2nd level of seating. The decor is beautiful! Transports me to France.
