Mama's African Kitchen - Review - Rogers Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"The restaurant team behind Mama’s African Kitchen already has two spots in the suburbs, but their first Chicago brick-and-mortar is now in Rogers Park. They have a variety of dishes from all over Africa, like egusi, liboke pork, and fried salt fish." - John Ringor

sooooo happy to be having food from my country (DRC) in chicago!!! the hosts were so kind and jovial. the food tasted just like how my mom makes it. great congolese music and drinks like vitalo as well! they do not yet serve alcohol so get your alcoholic drinks before or after if that’s what you’re looking for. i genuinely want everyone to know about this placez whether congolese or not, i can almost guarantee you will find the flavours are rich and delicious. and the price is very decent considering im sure many of these goods are imported from back home! you get that good authentic quality taste. food also came out decently fast - maybe 10-15 mins max which in my experience of african restaurants is very quick. still tasted good though! i got it to take with me to the airport back to toronto, that’s how good it was 🤣 PS the restaurant is now named chez lisa loboka!! i hope they update it on google soon so no one else gets confused bc i was

This was my second time at the restaurant and I simply loved it! I had an incredible experience. The flavors were rich and authentic, the service was friendly, and everything tasted fresh. I’ll definitely be coming back!

This place is seriously amazing. Had the dindon with jollof rice and african beans. Flavors and spiciness were perfectly excellent. They’re clearly still working towards their stride after recently opening, but the atmosphere and service are excellent and really all they need is some well deserved neighborhood love. Seriously- get in here.

I can’t give this place a zero, so unfortunately I’m forced to give it a one. The prices listed on the menu do not reflect what you’re actually charged. We ordered one whole chicken that was clearly priced at $16. After waiting almost two hours for the chicken and jollof rice, we were served extra-tiny wings instead, even though wings are not listed anywhere on the menu. The wings amounted to roughly 35 small pieces, which was never explained or clarified. When it was time to pay, the waiter then charged $21 per person for the chicken—something that was never communicated or reflected on the menu. Despite all of this, the total somehow came out to $90. The waiter also appeared to be under the influence, though he was kind and polite. Overall, the experience was extremely unprofessional and misleading. I can see why this place has little to no traction.

Staff people are very kind and happy to teach about their foods & cultures. Partner & I had the fumbua with makayabu & kwanga... Just perfect for this cold winter night. Can't wait to come back for their Valentine's Day event!!!

The food was absolutely spectacular. My friend and I shared the grilled goat with their légumes verts (which was similar to collard greens) and fufu. The dish was $26 but they served plenty of food, and it was absolutely delicious. The staff were very welcoming and kind. I'd love to go again.

Totally unprofessional establishment. The prices on the menu did not reflect the bill. The waiter was kind but seemed to be not fully there. Don’t waste your time here.

Unfortunately, this was one of my least favorite meal experiences. I’m a huge fan of West African food and was pleased to see an option in my neighborhood. I ordered takeout and ended up throwing the food away. I’m being honest about my experience for feedback for the future. I’d love to come back and try again.
