Where to Find Jaw-Dropping Peruvian Food in Portland and Beyond

"Yes, even Peruvian cuisine can be bowl-ified, as Mama’s Peruvian Bowls, a cart at the CORE pod on 82nd proves. The paper bowls contain a deceptively large amount of food, with options like lomo saltado, stir-fried beef and french fries served over rice. Peruvians also like their spaghetti, offered here as tallarines verdes, in a creamy pesto, and a la huancaina, a rich cheese sauce, yellow from aji amarillo paste. Diners can also choose from empanadas, ceviche, and vegetarian versions of traditional dishes using mushrooms in lieu of steak, the only meat on the menu." - Krista Garcia

Google
The strips of steak were soft and flavorful. I will definitely visit here again. The rice was a little bland, I honestly would have preferred a stir fry vegetables option with that yummy sauce instead of the rice. Best tip, ask for a sample of the steak. I loved it's salty savor, but worth trying first. Also their hot sauce is spicy and delicious! Lots of picnic tables to sit outside. There is also seating inside at the bar. Very family friendly, lots of kids running around playing with balls on the weekends (more of a comment on the food cart pod versus on this particular Peruvian food cart).

Google
What an awesome experience! I loved the familiar tastes from Peru, with the concept of being a bowl! My husband and I drove from Woodland to check this gem out! We ordered a ceviche, a tacu tacu bowl, and papas a la huancaina! All three bowls were delicious. The truck is located in a fenced/secure food truck court- CORE, which has safe and adequate parking. The ladies who helped us were super friendly and helpful. We will be back!

Let’s get something straight here, Peru has one of the best, or maybe THE best, food in all of the Americas. This place is a great representative of that amazing culinary gift to the world. If you live in the Portland area, you should not miss this place; and if you’re visiting, make the trip to this food truck. It is located in a nicely kept, nicely organized, family friendly and clean food truck park with tables, shade and a kid’s play area. This truck has the best food there. I recommend the Lomo Saltado, Tallarines Verdes and Tacu Tacu. All dishes are delicious and cooked traditional style. Even better, many of the dishes can be cooked Gluten Free. The spicy sauce is served on the side, so you don’t have to worry about getting something too spicy, and unlike other cuisines, Peruvian food has a nice and balanced mix of delicious spices that will not overwhelm your senses but rather delight them. I highly recommend you try this place.

Google
Very good and the Medium is more than enough food for me, steak is rich with flavor and the pasta is amazing. Update 2/19/23..... Food. 5⭐️ Service 5⭐️ Atmosphere 5⭐️ (food cart so I give this to the staff and how they make you feel) So this is a 5 month update and I'm telling you it's a great one, so my last review was about the Tallarines Verdes and was amazing and now I tried 2 new things to me and one of them is not on the menu on the side of the truck but is online (I will share the QRF in the pictures) so I had the Tallarines A La Huancaina and Fish ceviche and I will say I love them both of them and together they are amazing with the creamy noodles with the flavor of the steak and sweetness of the peppers and the lime with the fish cut together perfectly, I'm adding more pictures to show how great is it...... Also the Ceviche would be amazing on a hot day 😍

Google
First time eat Peruvian. I asked the kind lady taking orders what I should get. She grabbed another worker who kindly explained what she recommends. I got a #3. Not sure what was all in it but there was a lot of steak so I was happy. Delicious bowl.

Google
This cart doesn't have anything vegetarian on the menu, but they made me a Tallarin Saltado with portobello mushrooms!! Omg, so good. Excellent flavor. My meal was vegan except for one of the salsas I tried that had milk in it (Mama's). If you like to try spicy foods, go for the rocoto salsa. The heat was tolerable and the flavor was so yummy. 100% recommended!

Every time I go to a new Peruvian restaurant/food cart, I try ceviche first because it’s my favorite dish and reminds me of home, Peru. Mama’s was impressing! The ceviche was so refreshing! Fish was perfect term and so was the amount of lime; the flavor was on point! Servings are pretty generous too! I got the small one and it was just the right amount. My partner had the tallarines a la huancaina with the beef (which is pretty much a Lomo Saltado without the potato), a twist that I had never seen before! Aside from being delicious, it’s an ingenious combination! You technically get to try two Peruvian dishes in one 💡 My partner LOVED it and so did I!😍 We live quite far but will definitely be back to check out the other dishes! Gracias Chelsea and Mamas.

Yelp
All I gotta say is... woah. Wow. Please get a bowl immediately, you will not regret this delicious food. I'm going back for my second bowl in 2 days! It's out of this world delicious.

Yelp
Yes. Do it. I often wander around those food carts and somehow always miss this one. It is over by the barbecue cart in the corner. The service was delightful and the food was surprising and it's richness and comfortness. This would be a perfect sick day comfort food. I had the green pasta with steak, onions and tomatoes. Than I was expecting. The green sauces very pesto like it's not exactly, the noodles are spaghetti like at the steak and potatoes and onions were cooked delightfully with a bit of lovely char. All around great lunch choice. Would do again.

Yelp
I got their special for the weekend which was their anticuchos. The antichichos tasted like beef heart skewers. It was seasoned nicely, worked well with the boiled potato and a side of corn. The skewers were my favorite part of this meal. With their special, I got the combo so it came with picarones (Peruvian donuts). They were made fresh, they were airy and had a warm fig honey to dip it in. To me the picarones on its own were too plain, but with the warm fig honey it was fine. I wouldn't say it's my favorite thing. Not pictured, I also got an Inca cola. Overall the entire meal didn't feel heavy at all. The staff were very friendly and I wish I ordered their ceviche but there was already enough food for me to eat .

Yelp
I tried this place on a whim after seeing their menu among the other pod carts and oh my gosh, I was so happy I chose to try it. It was flavorful, filling, and well cooked. I've never had Peruvian food before so please keep that in mind, but as far as food goes, will be eating here again. Felt like a home cooked meal.

Yelp
Went here for a quick lunch after running an errand. This food cart is located in the middle of a parking lot with many other food carts. Wanted to try something new and Peruvian food smelled good. I ordered the beef noodles and service was quick and accommodating. When the food came out it was piping hot. Good for a cold day. The noodles were good and the beef was cooked well. Only reason for three stars is because the food was a bit salty for my taste.

Yelp
This place is craaaaazy delicious. The cart is tucked into the corner of the BG Cartel food cart pod, but it deserves to be front and center because it's that good. I've tried just about every cart at this place now, and I can confidently say this is my favorite spot by far. Let me start off by saying that the women who took our orders and cooked the food couldn't have been nicer. You can feel the passion and enthusiasm they have for their food, and there was a warmth in our conversation that made me feel like you're getting food from your friendly neighbor. We ended up settling on the lomo soltado and tallarines a la huancaina (both in a medium). The dishes came bursting at the seams - this is the kind of place that wants to give you as much food as possible. So, while it's costs a bit more here vs. others in this same cart pod, you can easily get two meals out of one order. I cannot tell you how unbelievably tasty the food was. The steak on both orders were cooked to perfection. The rice in his dish looked like plain white rice but was bursting with flavor! The creamy noodles in my dish were the perfect comfort food. He ordered the mild sauce and I ordered medium, and both were really good, with the nod going to the medium. They also sell Inca Kola, which is worth a try if you've never had it. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I've raved about this place since we ate there. If you're in the area, this place is 100% worth a shot.

Yelp
Has been consistently really good with every visit. Always look forward to their specials. Would recommend to anyone that hasn't tried Peruvian food... and just recommend in general. Well done.

Yelp
This is by far the most incredible Peruvian food I have ever had, and easily some of the most amazing food I've had in Portland! It's a family owned business and Chelsea and her family are amazing! I got the tacu tacu bowl the the Huancaina sauce on the side and every single flavor was so rich and incredible! I could taste the love! I'm so glad I have this so close to me! I'm going to be coming back often!

Yelp
This place is nothing short of amazing. Not only were they the sweetest people, who gave great recommendations, but the food tasted amazing. I got a creamy spaghetti dish with steak, tomatoes and onions and it was delicious. The steak was extremely tender and the sauce was creamy and flavorful with a little kick. The portion was also ginormous. I got a medium and could easily get 2-3 meals out of it. They are located in the corner of the BG food cartel and if you go, this is the spot you have to try.

Yelp
This place is criminally underrated. There are tons of great food carts at this pod, but I'd eat at this one everyday if I could. I've had just about everything on the menu and it's been great every time- especially the steak. I dunno what they do to marinate the beef, but it always comes out super tender and flavorful. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Such wonderful flavors and the service is great. I got the.Tacu Tacu bowl. The flavors are comfort in a bowl and very very very filling. I got the small bowl and it was more than enough for a meal. Highly recommend this food cart. I tried the food cart in Oregon city at corner 14.

Yelp
Amazing ceviche combo, I could not finish it all. Fresh and delicious flavors, wonderful service. Check them out, they know their stuff!

Yelp
Went for the first time this evening and had the Lomo Saltado. WOW. Just wow. This was so so good. The woman cooking (mama?) was so very sweet and the food was superb. Highly recommend this place. I'll be back soon to try a new dish!

Yelp
Very good!! Love coming down to the corner 14 and choosing from the large selection. This is a great dish!!

Yelp
Very friendly staff, happy and welcoming. Gave our dog a treat :) The steak and onions were tasty, but it was kind of bland really. Would eat here again just for that service and to support local, but it's not craveable food for me anyway!

Yelp
Oregon City location - GET THE CEVICHE! It will change your life. The flavors and freshness were on point and made me want to try every item on the menu.

Yelp
This is my favorite place in the BG Food Cartel, it's consistently delicious and the customer service is wonderful! I highly recommend and I will always be coming back!

Passion D.

Yelp
Great little cart we stumbled on. Food was tasty and reminded me of my trip to Peru last year. It was a bonus that the girls (cooks) also have been to South America and made it a more genuine experience. Low key I wanted to try qui but they don't make it here.

Awmber M.

Yelp
Delicious rice bowls, flavorful steak and hot sauces. I like that you can choose the sizes. Service was so nice and friendly. Love the outdoor setting of BG's food cartel, so nice! We have come back to this cart several times, and will keep coming back.

Alex W.

Yelp
Must try- Great quality food! The staff is so friendly. I ordered the lomo saltado and it was so flavorful! I got a medium and it was a great size for me to eat and my husband to snack on.

Charless K.

Yelp
Food is ok. Not. Authentic Peruvian food. For an "American" the food is good cuz to be honest American people likes everything. Customer service is good when owner is there. If owner is not present be ready to wait at least half hour to get your order and to deal with 2 ladies that don't know how to treat customers.

K S.

Yelp
Incredible food and service! The women here are so kind and friendly. The food is the best Peruvian in Portland/Beaverton! The meat is incredibly flavorful. My favorites are the lomo saltado and tallarine hauncaina. CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE ENOUGH!!

perry n.

Yelp
Service was great. I had the lomo saltado and thought it was okay. The meat was a little chewy and not that much given tbh. Also the medium sized bowl which is a normal portion size actually (small is like a kids size), $16 for it is just a little steep.

Talia B.

Yelp
All I gotta say is: Wow. This place smacks -- SO good. I don't think I've ever had Peruvian food before and I'm glad my first time was at this place. The owner was really kind and explained the menu to me and recommended I try their medium heat sauce on the side (grateful I did -- it was DELICIOUS). I got the Tacu Tacu bowl and will definitely be going back for it again -- good enough that I had to go back up and let the owner know how much I enjoyed it. Excited to try more. New staple. Don't have pictures to share 'cause I ate it too fast

Yorch A.

Yelp
Their food is amazing, my family and I love the service and have now become regulars. Great option when looking for authentic Latino flavor.

Michelle V.

Yelp
First time ever having Peruvian food and it was so amazing!!! Everyone was so kind and helpful too with recommendations. Perfect for this cold weather!

Yelp
Family was looking for Peruvian food and we landed at Mama's Peruvian Bowls. We all ordered ceviche while we visited. Ceviche was very fresh and great portions. Even our family member who isn't a big fan of ceviche loved it. Will be visiting again soon!
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Ceviche was amazing and super fresh, extra aji limo pepper made it really hit the spot. The owners are very nice and personable and really enjoyed my chat with them. Highly recommend this spot, I just wish I didn't live in a different state or I would be coming back multiple times a week!

David C.

Yelp
Amazing food! Best Tallarines a la Huancaina I have had. So worth the drive from Portland to Beaverton. Will be returning soon!

Christopher S.

Yelp
Mama's is a relatively new food cart to the Beaverton food scene. Wonderful service with a smile. I've eaten here twice in the past week. The first time-I enjoyed 3 Peruvian tamales. They were extremely tasty and satisfying. Loved their hot sauce. The 2nd time I tried a noodle dish with beef. I must say I was not too impressed with this dish. The pasta was starchy and the beef was less than tender. I'll give Mama's another try, but I'll be looking for a chicken dish minus the spaghetti noodles. I know this cart cooks food with love. Give them a try. And-expect service with a smile.

Miguel R.

Yelp
Some of the best Peruvian food I've tried. We got the ceviche, tallarín verde, tallarín a la huancaina, and the tacu tacu. Really delicious, authentic food. The ceviche and the tallarín huancaina were the best though. The lomo it came with was super juicy and flavorful. I can't wait to go back. If you're near Portland, this is a must go. Also the lady at the counter was super nice too. Made me feel like home

James W. B.

Yelp
Without a doubt my new favorite spot! Having been interested in Peruvian cuisine beyond empanadas Mama's Bowls does not disappoint. The "Tacu Tacu" has clean, balanced, wonderful flavors. The Ceviche is the best I've ever had and the medium spice is perfect for me. Great on a warm summer day. I also appreciate they don't use bulky plastic or Styrofoam containers.

April S.

Yelp
I can't wait to go back, the food was delicious! I've never had Peruvian food so I didn't know what to order and the owner was so sweet to give us recommendations.

Mark D.

Yelp
I made the mistake of only getting a small order, which I greatly regret now! Next time I will be bringing home a large order or two. Such amazing food!
