The 6 Best Hostels in Rio de Janeiro (Updated 2025)

"Located on a quiet street in bohemian Santa Teresa, I found this homey, artsy hostel — an old mansion turned quirky spot — full of eclectic décor, wall art, a music room with instruments, resident cats, and plenty of indoor and outdoor shared spaces (including hammocks, an indoor TV lounge, and an outdoor sundeck). The bunk beds all have lockers, privacy curtains, individual power outlets, and reading lamps, though some dorms include three-tiered bunks; the friendly staff keep everything nice and clean. It’s social without being a party hostel, but be aware it’s up a steep hill." - Matthew Kepnes

Well located, very friendly staff/owners who provide excellent recommendations for things to see and do around Rio, good sized beds with curtains for privacy, aircon during the night and space to comfortably store your things. Met some very nice fellow solo travellers here! Also there is no loud music so you can actually sleep. Would highly recommend if you want a family vibe hostel.

I felt at home! I felt very comfortable and I was very welcomed. Great staff, very kind, helpful and nice, definitely went out of their way to help. The rooms and bathrooms were clean. A lot of nice rooms to relax and have a good time. Great atmosphere. A few little repairs are needed around the building but nothing remarkable. The region is not the safest around Rio, but I didn't have any problems.

I'll give it 3 ½ stars. The hostel is situated in a hilly area so those with heavy luggage will suffer going uphill. The area might look a bit sketchy at times but I never had any problems there during my stay. The hostel needs some TLC - I've stayed in hostels in São Paulo, which is supposedly a more expensive city, and the hostels there were spotless with great facilities while charging the same amount of money per night. The aircon is switched off during the day - staying in the room when it's not working is unpleasant. Bunk beds are 3-tiered so that's another downside. You're supposed to make your own bed at check-in and take your linen back to the reception at check-out and that makes me think that nobody from the staff checks and cleans the beds - mine wasn't the cleanest. The toilet paper they use is really bad - it falls apart at the slightest touch. The staff members were helpful and approachable.

One og the best hostels I've ever been. A lot of common areas and chill areas. I've felt home since the first moment. The owner is very kind and helpful. The area is perfect and you have a lot of activities during the days around

We stayed here for 4 nights in a private room, the place is great, we felt at home from the minute we walked in. Very social friendly hostel with a bar open at weekends. Great location right next to lappa bars and restaurants. All the staff were amazing here, Alex from reception was the perfect guide he took us all out to some really cool local street party’s getting a real taste for Rios music scene. We moved to Copacabana after here and instantly regretted leaving! After staying a few places this was the best hostel in Rio ,definitely Stay here!

Great location, just up from Lapa arches (Carioca Aqueduct) and a 2 minute walk from the Escadaria Selarón. ||Lapa is the place to be for partying, lots of bars, restaurants, street vendors (food and drinks) and street salsa music.||On our first visit we had some really friendly staff and very helpful. All of the staff spoke English. ||We arrived at 10pm and by 10:30pm we had already been invited out to discover the Samba/carnival street music. ||We stayed in the “Oscar” room (all room names are names) for 2 nights, which is a private room with bunk beds, a small table and chair. The room has a big wall fan and ceiling fan, along with the window which cools the room down. Showers and toilets not too far from room (but no hot water for the showers). The room overlooks the bar area, there is no music etc allowed after 10pm.||We liked it that much we stayed again in the “Barbara” room, again another private room with bunk beds. This room had aircon and a fan, it was on another level to the rest of the rooms and had a nice outside area with seating to chill out. ||You get a free breakfast, which is good when backpacking. Juices, choice of cereal, bread, cheese, ham and fruits. ||The only bad thing about our second stay was the guy behind reception did not really know what was going on and was not as accommodating as the other staff, if you stay there I hope you don’t have to deal with him. Which is why I rated it lower than I had if the staff had been the same as the first visit. ||Also the wifi was not good and kept dropping out and running so slowly.

I had a very nice stay at Membembe hostel. The dorm was good and space, with lockers and a small balcony. Staff was very kind and helpful. Breakfast ok, but simple. Location is good, although you have to have in mind it’s not very close to any beach, but on the plus side it’s fairly close to Lapa and the city center, and of course cozy Sta. Teresa with cool bars and restaurants. All in all a very good place to stay in Rio.
