Did not stay here but ate at the restaurant. Pork chops with gravy was awesome. Sides of sticky rice, cabbage, beans and a unique potato/pasta salad made for a filling meal. Quaint little place with some views of the ocean.

What a gem! Valentine special was amazing. Steak cooked great. Shimp succulent, asparagus perfect. The mashed potatoes were a little chunky b

Google
What an amazing restaurant, for which is one of the oldest restaurants in the big Island.. It really has it's old rustic charm of yesteryears. I really love their amazing pork chops for which it probably was hand down from generation to generation. I also love the service. Everyone there is so friendly and nice. I look forward to going back. I hope they never close down Monagos is is the best.

Nostalgia! This place just speaks like we’re eating back in the old days and a home cooked meal is all we needed for dinner. I had the hamburger steak with gravy and onions. The hamburger had a crust that you could tell came from a cooktop that’s been seasoned for years. It was moist and tasty. The teriyaki beef was the type you’d get at the old saimin stand. Finally, the pork chop. Chewy, tasty, moist…smothered in gravy. If you want a home cooked meal done right, swing by Manago.

What a wonderful place. There are so few old Hawaiian dining rooms left. Manago is special. We miss the neon! I hope they bring it back.

Google
It's no longer a hotel, but the historic restaurant is still open. This review is about the restaurant only. The restaurant is award winning and has a James Beard award (look in the check in room) Stellar food, atmosphere, and service with low pricing. Definitely a place to eat. Ample parking to the left and right of the building. The building is a historic landmark (over 100 years old!). The hotel entry has lots of antiques from the area. The hotel and garden area behind the restaurant are fun to look at. If you get the pork chops (amazing quality and quantity) you have the choice of 10 ounce or 1 pound. And the 10 ounce was enough for me and I eat a lot. They bring out sides for the whole table as well. Definite must eat if you are in the area

Google
The restaurant is a must stop for us even when we stay on the other side of the island. Pork chop, butterfish and Ono are all so tasty. The homey flavors and preparations are a trip down the memory lane (even for someone who never tried those flavors from bygone days) Well worth a detour from the usual tourist traps. It doesn’t hurt that the drive is scenic all the way from Kona town.

Google
My husband and I ate there recently because it was highly recommended and reviews were mostly very positive. Our experience was less than anticipated. Servers were efficient and smiled at us. Ambiance- well there is none. But that’s not the issue. The food was disappointing. The pork chop was gristly and my fish was overcooked. Side dishes of lima beans and potato salad lacked interest with no other options. Prices are very good but the food left something to be desired. Also they are no longer serving breakfast.

Yelp
We enjoyed our meal so much we went back a second time. The food is Japanese/American and made fresh to order. It is clearly a local favorite and I can see (taste) why they win awards. They provide sides with each meal and they seem to mix them up each time. We had friendly, informative service from Ramona, a Manago veteran. She was very helpful and efficient - oh yeah, and funny, too. This a 100+ year old building that operated as a hotel for decades. Fabulous ambiance, we hope some new family comes along and keeps this 4 generations of family biz alive.

Yelp
What a treasure of a place! It's amazing places like this still exist. Butterfish with miso - moist and buttery fish with a generous serving of miso sauce on top. Delish! 5 stars! Opakapaka - the butter garlic preparation was perfectly done and the fish was nice and flaky. 5 stars! Pork chops - this was highly recommended but it seemed a little dry. The gravy was super good but wasn't too impressed. 4 stars. All the sides were enjoyable especially the ogo. I thought it was like banchan, so we made the mistake of asking for more and we're charged an additional amount per person (like $6). It was worth it since the overall meal price was reasonable. Very low key no frills place with locals and tourists and limited hours. Get here if you can!

Yelp
So happy that I finally got to eat here after hearing about it from friends multiple times. After a morning hike in southern Kona, we stopped here for lunch. We were greeted quickly and kindly and immediately got seated. The menu is posted on the wall and while not extensive it is full of local favorites. The one thing I really wanted to try due to all my friends was the pork chops and they did not disappoint. Be sure to get the gravy and onions. The gravy is so delicious that I was pouring the extra over my rice. We also tried the mahi mahi which was also tasty and a good pairing since it was a lighter dish and we were sharing everything. It definitely lived up to the hype my friends gave it and I can't wait to come back when I'm in the area again.

Yelp
Thank goodness Manago Restaurant is still going strong. We just finished dinner and another great dinner. We ordered the famous pork chops with gravy and onions, also hamburger streak with gravy and onions. Both dishes amazingly good. Not a fancy place for those yelpers looking for the Hawaii experience but for those looking for just good solid food, Manago's is your go to place. Last year the hotel was going to close and the restaurant was up in the air, decision wise. Well the plans changed and Manago restaurant is still going. Support it!

Yelp
Legit history and award winning dishes! All in a unassuming setting. Menu is simple and posted on the wall next to tables. Meals are served with sides of seaweed, ginger noodles, and yummy potatoe salad. The pork chops won a James Beard award. Nothing fancy here, but really good food.

Yelp
My notes say, "we'll be talking about this one for a while..." I tell you it takes a lot to warrant that kind of a prediction for people who eat out as much as we do... So story time. Where should I start... When we arrived at this place even from the outside, we were thinking, "what in the world have we gottan ourselves into." It looked like some old creepy hotel from the outside. But we've been fooled before, so we knew it could go either way. Inside the dining room, same sort of vibe. Huge dining room with way too few tables. Mostly locals who know everyone. Someone was celebrating a super chill birthday... Even the menu threw us off. I mean we were told to get the pork chops, but it's not like there were a ton of other choices on their 1980's menu. Add onion or gravy for like $.75?... $.75?! What in the world have we gotten ourselves into, I ask you?! Anywho, to make a long story short. The food came out. The pork chops taste just like they look in the picture. That is to say delectable. Top notch. Wonderful! And the fish dish wasn't too far behind. Turns out we got ourselves into some super special food... I could've eaten two more plates (and the pork chops on top of them too ;), but we fgured we'd come back (we never do). But... at least we'll always have the great memories... And true to form, we've been talking about that restaurant and those pork chops ever since. The end... now off to bed you go!

Yelp
We came to Manago Hotel Restaurant after having visited the South Point. It was 4:40 pm. We thought we'd had to kill before their 5:00 pm opening. Turned out the staff let us in at 4:50 along with 2 other groups. We lucked out and had a bit of time in the empty dining room and took our time with the menu. Service was efficient. The dining room has lots of pictures and is bright and airy. We ordered the Ono and pork chops. A big bowl of rice and plates of cellophane noodles, garlic edamame, and potato mac salad was delivered to our table. Turned out another patron seated at the adjacent table was also a first timer here. We got to talking and learned that he had come from Washington D.C. for work. He ordered the butterfish, but knew that the butterfish and pork chops were highly recommended. Since he was by himself, I offered a bit of the pork chop for him to try. He happily accepted and in return he gave us a bit of the butterfish to sample. The mains were really good. I guess the sides, which were tasty, are classics for Manago. I wish there were a bit more vegetables. Since we got there early, we watched the crowds stream in. They do take reservations. The dining room filled up pretty quickly not long after 5 pm. Manago is worth a visit.

Yelp
Came in on our 1 week wedding anni's vacation. This is my husbands go to when him and his family would come to bigisland for family vacay. Area has an old and rustic feel. Smells of old wood and just.....needs a makeover soon. lol. I mean...I love supporting long standing businesses but my nose was telling me something else. Like "your allergies are kicking in" Anyways. Well to sit down. Furniture looks basic but old school. Tables wobbled so I had to put a folded napkin under it lol. I got that!!! Food is like any home cooked meal. There wasn't anything fancy but it did taste good. Service was great!

Carlos S.

Yelp
We had to see what all the hype was about. I think the results were mixed. This establishment has been here since 1917 serving food and as a hotel. It is the oldest in the state. The atmosphere is super spartan. You might as well step into the past to experience what it might have been. They wheel a cart around with 3 appetizers. A potato and pasta salad, corn and peas, and bean sprouts. There is also a large bowl of steamed rice for the table. We ordered Pork Chops with onions and gravy (delicious, nice and crispy) and the Ono which apparently was overcooked and a bit dry. You can park in front on the street. Recommend just to say that you did it.

Suzi B.

Yelp
Basic but good and affordable. We stopped for an early breakfast and enjoyed a well made meal that included a delicious papaya half. Food was served hot and cooked just right. Menu is limited but everything is well prepared and tastes fine. Interior is a little run down and not at all fancy. Super casual. Very clean. Wait staff was great. Personable and quick.

Michelle O.

Yelp
Awesome traditional restaurant. This place has been around for over 100 years. Food was amazing and authentic. Best pork chop and fish I've ever had. Side dishes were included with the meal and were also delicious. Service was very quick. Truly a hidden gem.

Nyra C.

Yelp
Ate here for breakfast during the Thanksgiving holidays last year coming fr Oahu. It was a nice experience for us, and I will be sad if any of it changes.

Yelp
Love this place! A must every time I come to Kona. Delicious is not good enough for how twisty this was!

Yelp
Hawaii Island. The Big Island. Moku O Keawe. These are just some of the names that the still-growing island goes by. Although it's the youngest of the major islands in the Hawaiian Archipelago, it has more than it's fair share of legends, like Pele the Goddess of Fire ruling Kilauea Crater, the burial place(s) of Captain James Cook's chopped-up remains, and the secret gravesite of Kamehameha The Great. Then there's the Mango Hotel's pork chops. Big Island LEGEND. Salted, deep fried, smothered in bacon gravy and topped with a heap of sauteed onions, the swine is heavenly. They're fried until the fat is cooked, but not dry. The gravy is savory and not salty. Food is family style here. Your server will give you long rice (glass noodles), potato salad, ogo (seaweed) salad, and a bowl of rice. There's beer and wine after 11 AM. The setting is rustic and probably hasn't changed much since opening. Try to park curbside on the street. They have a private lot in the back, but after a meal here it is difficult to walk down that steep driveway--because hey, you're young and still growing like the Big Island.

Yelp
Excellent local food and gathering spot. Looking for something fancy go somewhere else. Service was on spot and food home cooked. And reasonably priced.

Reuben C.

Yelp
Food, service, ambiance. Everything was excellent. An historic and dining experience one must do while visiting the Big Island.

Yelp
Got a message on yelp and it read: "Do you recommend this place?" HECK YA!!! You cant go wrong. I live on another island but, will make it a point to go to Manago Hotel Restaurant whenever Im on Hawaii Island. I dont normally like pork chops and everyone tells me to get them. After a many many visits, I finally ordered the pork chops and ... dang! They were correct. Awesome!!! Old style restaurant. Dont expect much except good food.

Kimo K.

Yelp
We went to experience the nostalgia. Wife ordered a BLT with chips-she said it was good. I ordered fried opelu-that was good too.

Yelp
LOVE Manago Hotel Restaurant. We haven't been to Kona for years, but, was comforted by the same ambiance, a kind staff & delicious pork chops. Can't wait to return

Yelp
Visiting from Oahu, been here for lunch & had a good dining experience. Here to celebrate Uncle's Aki's 95 th birthday& this was our choice to dine. Six in our party, the table was reserved & a name plate was placed which was a nice touch. Our server was efficient, water served & enough time for each person to decide what they wanted to eat. After the beers came we ordered & what I liked is that they serve you family style the sides of the day, before your entree arrives. We had ample servings of Mac salad, Ogo, rice, & chicken long rice, being hungry we were happy to eat while waiting & ordered two plates of nicely thick cut squares of sashimi. Good food & conversation & before we knew the entree's arrived. Famous Pork Chops with gravy & onions, Opakapaka, Butterfish & Salmon were all so delish! A great dining experience , great value in today's world & excellent personal service@ Hawaii's first & over 100 yr old restaurant. Will always come back when visiting Kona!

Yelp
Wow, super excited and happy, to get to dine here at Manago Hotel Restaurant for the very first time, after reading that Manago received The James Beard America's Classic 2023. CONGRATS!! It was finally time for another neighbor island getaway for the day so its off to Kona! On the day I read that they got the award, I called to make reservations ahead, I was worried and didn't want to fly in to Kona and miss dining here due to the crowd and being busy! Note, as the saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover, if you are expecting something fancy, updated, renovated restaurant, this place is not for you. They are the oldest restaurant, over 100 years. You can feel it, the nostalgic-ness here. No fancy silver ware and plates either, just plastic the kine you use at your good friend's grandma's or Hanai aunty's house. Mom and pop, hole in the wall, comfort kine foods! We parked across the street at the park, * there is a sign, park at your own risk and remember don't leave valuables in the car. The entrance is the where the hotel's front desk is, go pass the stairs, watch your step. There is no menu, its posted on the wall. The menu including breakfast is super simple. I already had the pork chops in mind and butterfish but decided to go with the Opakapaka special. The pork chops comes in 2 sizes, we got the small 10 oz with onions and gravy ( $1.25 extra charge for onions and gravy) got the Opakapaka in butter garlic/ The entree comes with 3 sides along with a huge bowl of rice! which was still not enough and we needed more rice and ended getting another scoop, which is $1.50 per scoop. The Verdict- The sides we got on a Saturday, were chicken long rice, mac salad, and ogo. I loved the sides but not a fan of ogo. The pork chops was good with the gravy and onions, but it wasn't tender. I had a hard time chewing and just gave up after 2 pieces. The Opakapaka fish was fresh and cooked to perfection. The 2 pieces were tiny. We enjoyed our meal but decided next time we visit we will order all fish instead. Need to try the liver next visit. All in all it was a wonderful first time experience, real comfort food. I would love to come back here again. 5 Stars!! Even though this restaurant is over 100 years old, they do take credit cards. Closed on Mondays!

Matthew M.

Yelp
So, I'm just here to briefly say: go to Manago if you're in the area. And further, make sure you get the pork chop. There's genuinely nothing quite like it. It's buttery. Crispy. Slathered in homemade gravy and more onions that you can possible imagine. A smorgasbord of onions. A bevy of brilliant little slices of onion on top of that wonderful, well cooked, well seasoned, well sauced, pork chop. I know: you're right next to Kona. You could go anywhere. You could eat seafood! And you should! But not tonight. Tonight, go to Manago. The pork chop is honestly that good.

Ria D.

Yelp
I've been meaning to go here since I first visited the Big Island last year. The restaurant is of course found inside the Manago Hotel. FYI - they are currently closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. They do serve breakfast but we came for lunch. We were immediately seated and the menu was on the board and they gave us some water. The staff are very friendly and answered our questions about the menu - how the fish was prepared and what the special was. Price point is a little high but the quality was well worth it. The husband, college roommate and I shared two entrees. We ordered their large sized pork chops and their special, opakapaka. We got two large pork chops with bone and it was seared nicely. It was also super juicy. We asked for the gravy and onions on the side and that was nice so we can control how much we could smother our chops with. The seasoning was simple, which I appreciated because there weren't so many different flavors trying to stand out. The gravy seems to be your standard brown gravy. The onions were a nice addition to the juicy pork chop and it added a different texture to the dish. Their special, the opakapaka was pan fried in some butter and garlic. Though the filets were on the smaller side, we still appreciated the buttery goodness of the dish. The fish was cooked well and it was flaky and not overdone. Oh, we also took the excess sauces from each dish and topped it off on our rice. It was delicious. The sides that the entrees came with were chicken long rice, seaweed salad and a potato Mac salad. I feel like the chicken king rice stood out. The noodles were thick from soaking up all that broth. The seaweed salad wasn't salty but it had a nice crunchy texture. The potato Mac salad had good flavor and wasn't at all mushy, so I really enjoyed that. Overall, it was a great meal and would definitely go back when I'm around the Kona area. As for the restaurant itself, it's very nostalgic. Like what others have said, no AC but the windows were open so you can feel the breeze. We loved looking around in the lobby and in the restaurant itself - all the photos and etc. Definitely would come back again to try the other entrees and another order of pork chops. Love it!

Yelp
Bottom line: A must go One of the coolest and tastiest places we've visited while on the island. Great simple dishes done very well. I had the pork chops and butterfish and both were amazing. I would feel comfortable ordering anything on the menu as this place obviously knows comfort food. Very unique and cool spot. Great casual vibes but classy too.

Desire'e D.

Yelp
Stopped by on a weekend get-a-way. Heard many great things about this place for many years. Had to try their famous pork chops. My friend choose it with gravy and onions. It arrived bathed in a delicious brown gravy and covered with sauteed onions. Two big pieces. He said it's was everything that we heard of. I had the sauteed mahi with a lemon butter sauce. The fish was definitely fresh as it just melted in my mouth. Our meals came with rice, Mac spaghetti salad, streamed broccoli and mixed veggies all served family style. The restaurant has an old family feeling. The staff was friendly. Make sure we were okay and refilled our water without having to ask. Parking was plentiful. You could see that they had been quite busy by the tables waiting to be turned over. Next time you're in Kealakekua stop by this 100 year old restaurant.

Alan L.

Yelp
I was on the Big Island for a week. Ate at the Manago Restaurant twice it was so good. Highly recommend the Pork Chops. Read the other reviews. Pork care the way to go. The pork chops smothered in gravy and onions were the best meals on the Big Island for me. Service is great. Wait staff is friendly and fast. Support a local business and eat some ono food. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.

Paul M.

Yelp
Managoooooo I live youuuuuuu. Came here for lunch with my coworkers while on a business trip and I loved everything about this place! The sides of vegetables, ogo, rice, potato salad, and Hawaiian hot pepper chili water were perfect. And the pork chops with onions and gravy were exactly what I like when I order pork chops. Pork chops were juicy with a slight crunch, gravy was homemade, and the onions were a perfect balance to everything. I will now use any excuse I can to be near manago near lunch time! The ambiance of the hotel/restaurant is great too, definitely a must visit!!

Jessica N.

Yelp
This restaurant took me by surprise! If our friend did not recommend it, we probably wouldn't find it on ourselves. When we went there, most of the customers were more matured. The building was full Kona history, felt we went back time. It is 103 years old family owned restaurant. The service was good, menu was simple. It came with 3 free appetizers in old fashion way. We ordered - pork chops and Opakapaka were excellent! This is not a fancy place, but simple, old fashioned and flavorful in different ways.

Jennifer G.

Yelp
You select all the veggies and meat you want cooked and add the sauces you want cooked with your selection. You can also include noodles. I loved the selection available. My only complaint is that the sauces were really weak. I would go again.

M C.

Yelp
Everything was excellent!I had the delicious tender opakapaka. Since I live Eastside I also got a double pork chops to takeout! Service n old time ambience, wonderful. Support Manago so it lasts another 100 yrs! Support LOCAL!

Wesley T.

Yelp
The last time I went to Manago Hotel for lunch was about 30 years ago and I had very fond memories of dining there because it takes you back to the times when restaurants like these were common. I was looking forward to taking my family and told them not to expect too much because I don" think the younger generation from Oahu have ever dined in a "family style" like this. When I arrived I was happy to see that not much has changed in thirty years including the menu. The service can be hectic because they seat whole families, but they try to be prompt. We ordered beer and were served our water and side dishes next. There were two larges tables before us but they got to us in a timely manner. We ordered miso butterfish, hamburger steak, BLT, grilled Ono and pork chops. Every dish was excellent with the exception of the butter garlic Ono which was slightly overcooked. I was disappointed that they didn't have opelu or the pickled ogo (crunchy seaweed). The food here is what you would expect at a family gathering or eating at grandma's house, so don't expect nice plating of your meal here. I wouldn't say that this is a more local place, but a restaurant built around simple food done well. I and sure to come back someday.

Kyra K.

Yelp
A taste of Hawai'i's history is found right here at Manago Hotel Restaurant. This dual hotel and restaurant is Hawai'i's oldest continuously running restaurant and has been in operation for over 100 years! For locals and visitors, dining brings back memories of Old Hawai'i and childhood. What a treat I was in being able to visit this small-town gem that is also the James Beard America's Classic 2023 winner! It wasn't until I read the James Beard winners that I saw a Hawaii restaurant take the title for the Pacific and Northwest region. Being foodies, my friend and I wanted to try this place on our trip to the Big Island. After an eventful day, we chose to come to Manago for dinner. I called in advance to make reservations which I recommend (now that they're under the spotlight). We arrived earlier than our time and were brought to our table which we appreciated! From the moment I stepped in I felt transported to my Grandmother's kitchen. The historic family-owned restaurant isn't anything fancy-- old school wooden building, simple dining furniture, and mismatched dishes for serving. Yet, the service here is sweet and you feel as if you've been taken care of by close family. Their simple and limited menu is posted on the wall with their breakfast, lunch, and dinner items. Based on the reviews, I knew they were well-known for their pork chops. Though I lean more towards seafood, I knew I had to try what they were famous for! My friend and I chose to order and share their Pork Chops and Miso Butterfish (plain or Miso option). The Pork Chops came with two cuts and we asked for the gravy and onions on the side. They gave us the right order but for the wrong table and took it away. When we were served again our pork chops had gravy and onions on them which wasn't too big of a deal. When it came time to try the pork chops we were underwhelmed. Though well-sized, one chop was overcooked. It was dry, crunchy, and hard to cut. The other chop was juicy and cooked better but nothing memorable. The gravy was savory and light and the onions were well-cooked. All of our excitement built up unfortunately let us down. For the fish, I was initially given the wrong item--Ono. Once I got the butterfish they piled on the sauce which was a little overwhelming. The miso was very sweet and I had to scrape it off. The fish was delicate and light but had a few big bones in it that weren't edible. All of their entrees come with three side dishes and steamed rice. The side dishes for our visit were Ogo, Mac Salad, and Noodles. The ogo was my favorite of the three. It was nicely seasoned and a tad salty, the mac salad was creamy and hearty, and the noodles were plain but a good compliment to the other flavors. Though we didn't have the best experience, I recommend others to order the fish. I feel that we both would've enjoyed our meal more if we tried something different. Manago Hotel and Restaurant served a simple yet filling meal during my trip to the Big Island! This restaurant emulates history and nostalgia all while serving home-style food all at an affordable price. Located inside the Manago Hotel, you'll have to walk past the check-in to the back to access the restaurant. Parking can be found in their two private lots or on the street in front. It's always great to support locals and I'm glad I gave this James Beard Award winner a try on my visit.

Yelp
Amazing place that we've returned to every time we visit Hawai'i (from California before, now from Texas). This time my wife had the pork chop & I had the beef teriyaki. Service was quick & friendly. Ambiance was charming & very ohana.

Melvin D.

Yelp
Manago Hotel Restaurant is an embodiment of the rich tapestry of Hawaii's culinary and historical heritage. Nestled in Captain Cook, this establishment exudes an old-world charm that is both comforting and enchanting. Dining here is akin to a delightful trip down memory lane, where traditional Hawaiian dishes take center stage. The pork chops, a staple and crowd favorite, are seasoned and cooked to perfection, their flavors enhanced by the simple yet effective preparation. The array of fresh fish dishes showcases the island's bountiful ocean produce, with each dish reflecting the nuances of the Pacific. Beyond the food, what makes Manago Hotel Restaurant truly special is its atmosphere. The wooden floors, vintage photographs, and historical memorabilia transport diners to a bygone era, making the dining experience uniquely immersive. It's a reminder of simpler times, where meals were a communal event, filled with laughter, stories, and the spirit of 'ohana. The service is commendable, reflecting the warm hospitality that Hawaii is renowned for. The staff, many of whom have been with the hotel for years, exude genuine warmth and go the extra mile to ensure every patron feels at home. For those seeking a taste of authentic Hawaii, a blend of history, culture, and culinary excellence, Manago Hotel Restaurant is a treasure waiting to be discovered.

Marie J.

Yelp
Our group of 16 enjoyed this family-friendly restaurant on our last night all together. I ordered the pork chops and they were delicious. The sides (mixed corn/veg, Lima beans, potato mac salad, and sticky rice) were enjoyed as part of a true Hawaiian experience. Our server, Ramona, kept it real and did a great job. Highly recommend if you're in the Captain Cook area.

Viv L.

Yelp
My husband and I came here for lunch. It was our first time here. I read recommendations on the "butterfish", so I had that. My husband had the popular dish "pork chops". Both were delicious. We shared the sides and those were tasty as well! The staff were friendly and service was great.

Craig J.

Yelp
Maybe this place was nice once, and maybe it's just that Hawaii generally seems ok with everything being dirty and run down...but there is a difference between being the Oldest in Hawaii and just being old and run down This place is filthy, the food was 3rd tier at best, and EVERYTHING, about the place is either cobbled together or just plain broken and dirty If this were located ANYWHERE else on the planet, it would be a questionable homeless shelter or the weird hotel at the edge of town where felons stay as a long term residence. It's dirty, broken, not cared for, the food is low grade, and it's in the middle of nowhere. I feel like the current owners are just running on a legacy that their grand parents built...and now they are just waiting for the real estate to be worth enough that someone will buy it and tear it down and put something decent in its place. DON'T STAY HERE!!!

Yelp
Omg! Small mom & pop restaurant, very limited menu for lunch & dinner! But the food is delicious, I have not had a meal that I want to come back again very soon! Service staff was great and pleasant! Considering to come back tonight for dinner! Highly recommended!

Yelp
Great home cooked feel type of meals. Especially the pork chops and miso butterfish. Love the sides that they serve before the main entrees. The staff are very friendly and love the feel and look of the restaurant. No AC so it's all open windows so you can appreciate the cool breeze and great weather. Parking is either right out front of the hotel/restaurant or across the street in the park and it's free! I recommend making reservations especially for dinner because they can fill up fast. Locals eat here so that's how you know the food is good! Thanks Hotel Manago! I'll be back for the pork chops again.

Yelp
Manago's is my parents favorite restaurant on the Big Island. They love their pork chops, but I'm not the biggest fan of pork chops in general. I got a half order of French toast, which is just one piece of toast. I really liked the French toast because it was super light and not too eggy like other French toasts. Pro tip: you can order half orders of the French toast and pancakes. I also ordered a fried egg on the side for some protein. They also serve free coffee! We were lucky to find street parking right outside of the restaurant. It's in a beautiful area and definitely worth taking a stroll around the property. It's chilly in the morning with beautiful views of the ocean. Overall, great food at a very reasonable price. Service was also friendly!

Yelp
Long overdue review ! Growing up Managos was THE place to go for the best pork chops and I believe that is still true! Came here for birthdays, my graduation lunch, date nights and everything in between and was always met with the best service. Everyone who works there is always so kind and full of aloha. Highly recommend everyone to dine here atleast once in their life or visit if you're a tourist. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but it's truly a one of a kind place I hope never goes away.

Yelp
Location is interesting from a historical perspective but the food was not good especially for the price. No one in our party was impressed so we don't know what all the fuss is about.

Yelp
Dining in a historical location! Really enjoyed coming to the oldest restaurant/hotel in the Hawaiian islands! Menu is a mix of classic diner food and hawaiian/Japanese comfort foods. The meals come with sides which reflected this fusion. Seaweed salad, sweet corn and peas, mac/potato salad and white rice. I went with the smothered bone in pork chops (comes with two chops) with gravy and onions. I was hungry so I also got the fish special of the day (opakupaku) pan fried in butter. The hotel itself is pretty interesting and it felt like stepping back in time. Worth checking out!

Yelp
I live on Oahu and make it a point when I visit Hawaii Island to eat at Manago Hotel. Family style restaurant with awesome service! You must and I say you must eat the pork chops! It comes in 2 sizes.. skinny and thick.. order both.. And don't forget to ask for "chillipepa wadda".. We had the miso butterfish... bomb! We had the butter ono... bomb! And the liver with onions... bomb! The rice and sides are part of the meal.. everyday the sides change.. And last, they take debit or credit!

Yelp
Don't be fooled by its simple exterior. Manago Hotel is an unassuming diamond in the rough. We managed to get ahead of the lunch rush and thought, "there's no way a James Beard award-winning restaurant is this empty on a weekend afternoon?" But once Sunday mass let out, the small diner quickly filled up. Despite this, service was fast. If you're a tourist, expect the servers to chat with locals between carting out orders on chunky rubber carts. Apparently, the pork chops are the star dish and the liver and onions are a tasty second. But here you'll find no recommendations section or even mention of any accolades - James Beard or otherwise. Here's what we did try: * The sides of the week were mac salad, hijiki (seaweed) salad, and a veggie mix of corn, peas, and carrots. The hijiki salad was definitely the winner of the three with a bright, acidic taste. The mac salad was a little strange with cut spaghetti noodles instead of macaroni. Steamed white rice was also served in big bowls. * Teriyaki Chicken - Looks like it was boiled in sadness but it is happiness on a plate. Perfectly tender and packed with flavor. This is a protein-lover's dream. * NY Steak - Buttery and cooked to perfect. Super tasty. * Mahi Mahi Sandwich - Again, unassuming but crazy flavorful. Loved this. * Cheeseburger - This one caught me by surprise. With a smoky but light flavor, I wouldn't be surprised if this was truly ground steak packed into a buttery patty that I wish I could conjure at the snap of my fingers. The group agreed that this was the best dish of them all. After a morning of sea kayaking to Capt Cook's monument, this was a delicious, filling, and inexpensive lunch (especially comparing the flavor and quality you get from the tourist traps around the area) that I wish I had had time to revisit to try every dish at least once. If you're lucky, you can follow up with a visit to the farmer's market across the street for banana bread or a kombucha float.
