Philly’s Restaurants and Bars Make the Most of a Botched Thanksgiving Eve - Eater Philly

"Pottstown-based whiskey specialist Manatawny Still Works blasted out an email on Tuesday noting its business hours were just extended this week, 'especially on Wednesday.' While on-site drinking will cease at 5 p.m., its Pottstown home base will now stay open until 7 p.m. and its East Passyunk Avenue tasting room will accommodate to-go cocktail and bottle sales and online order pickups until 11 p.m." - Tierney Plumb

Amazing cocktails and atmosphere. Logan is a great bartender and made for some great conversation for two kids from the suburbs.

A great place for cocktails! For my birthday, I was booked for a private tour at this facility that was coupled with a tasting and a free drink. I had never been on a distillery tour before so, I wasn't sure what to expect. We all had a great time. Worker Melissa was our guide and she was spectacular from the get go. Full of amazing information, a great sense of humor and extremely helpful when any in our small party needed anything. This place, by far, had the best whiskey sours I have ever had. A cheese board was included with the private tour and I do believe they have some snacks but this establishment does not serve food. I was told, however, that you may bring your own food and dogs were welcome.

Stopped by this gem one evening and was not disappointed. Plenty of seating inside and out and clean. The Xmas lights hanging around the barrels inside gives such a cool vibe. The slushees are good, we did a flight of 3 different whiskeys and ended up leaving with several bottles for home. The staff is friendly and we loved the environment. Outside was cornhole and picnic tables and inside they had live music in the evening. Saturday evening was a fun time to go!

Google
Great place we recently found out about and decided to pop in and check out after dinner last night. Staff was friendly and our waitress was very informative. They also had live music. A guy playing guitar and singing. He was great!! It was a nice low key way to end our evening. Highly recommend

Google
Manatawny Still Works is a craft distillery, located in an industrial park by the Pottstown Airport, pumping out an impressive lineup of spirits. The gin, whiskey, vodka, and rum all are top quality, and they consistently flash a little creativity with infused variations. While they’ve got smaller tasting rooms in Philly, this location offers a decent sized seating area, distillery tours, and an outdoor area. It’s family and dog friendly (outdoor area) which frequently brings us in. Checkout social media in advance for special events, weekend food trucks, and live music. Upon arrival you’ll be challenged to pick from a few signature drinks, create-your-own spirit sampler, or one of the craft draft beers. Truthfully, they could expand the selection of house cocktails, but you can always get free off-menu. Swag and full-size bottles are available if you find something you love...like the Hidden River Barrel Rested Gin. Pro-tip: Sly Fox is just across the street and is also dog and family friendly. Definitely reserve extra time to visit both!

I didn’t get a chance to try many of the spirits but the cocktails we had were great. The Manhattan with Rye was perfect and the live band Saturday was amazing. The only thing preventing this from getting a 5 Star is the place loosing some flare when there is no live music. The atmosphere is nice and there are outside tables where you can sit with a dog.

Google
We had alot of fun and drinks here are made fresh. We will definatley visit again. We even played a game - Jenga!

Google
Really let down. Grew up in Pottstown and have become a big fan of the tasting rooms through the city and Ardmore. The warehouse lights glare through the barrels to the seating area. There was no music. Drinks were way sweeter than at other locations. A bartender coughed into hand right before shaking a drink. Space has a lot of potential and people I was with said it was better in the past.. I think this location could be great with some TLC.

Yelp
I've been here MANY times; a hangout place for my friends. Excellent, unique drink menu that rotates regularly. They take a while to make, so be ready to wait for them. I like she retro steampunk look, the games they provide, and live music. Fun place! Be patient with the drinks.

Yelp
Drinks and service are good. Small snack selection and nice outdoor seating. Open Sundays.

Yelp
OMG ... what a find! Came in as they opened on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and got to chat with the absolutely FANTASTIC Lauren and Jennifer (since it was empty at the time). But within 15 minutes ... there was a crowd and they were so accommodating to the kiddies and 4-legged friends too! There's even lots of lawn games to take outside and enjoy on the plentiful picnic tables (with umbrellas too ... if it gets too sunny). As I studied the drink menu ... I asked for recommendations and especially anything with rum. Although there weren't any rum based drinks on the current menu ... they were quick to suggest an AWESOME cocktail with rum, apple cider reduction, and ginger that totally tasted like FALL! Can't wait to go back and spend more time there trying ALL their drinks!

Yelp
Manatwany is my go to spot for fresh and creative drinks. They always have new drink specials which I love. They also make and bottle all of their own alcohol and you can even get whiskey aging barrels in all different sizes for your at home bar. Check them out and you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Ive been coming here for a while now. I can honestly say this is my favorite place to get a drink. Lauren, Jen and Emily are awesome and welcoming. The drinks, let me tell you, ive never been much of a cocktail guy but this place always has something new and creative. Every Thursday they have karaoke or trivia which alternates every week if you are looking for something to break up the routine. If you are on the fence then check them out!

Yelp
Second time trying this restaurant and food was just as delicious as the last. Great friendly service. Cocktails are delicious.

Yelp
In this little suburban distillery, you're in for such a treat- so my recommendation, do the... (still) works! Take the tour, have some cocktails after, and enjoy the ride! We started the night with a tour with our fabulous tour guide (shoutout Melissa! Request her if you can!) who not only brought us on a tour through the distillery, but also was able to impart delightful and very useful pieces of alcohol-driven wisdom. Did you know, for instance, that wheat-based vodka is SIGNIFICANTLY smoother than corn-based alcohol? Boom! Now you do! (BTW, all this various knowledge is complete with samples for your enjoyment :). ) After the tour, we sat at the bar and got drinks. Jen, Lauren, and Emily were fantastic in mixing my group up a wealth of cocktails, answering our questions, and providing us with fun witty banter that made three hours pass like 15 minutes. My specific recommendations: 1) if you like something you can suck down without an afterthought, get the electric feel. It is almost TOO DELICIOUS. 2) Like a bit o' spice, but keeping it even keel, try a rebel rebel 3) When in doubt, asked one of the incomparably well versed bartenders. For the truly bold- just say, "Make me something great," and be prepared to be wowed Actually, just prepared to be wowed.

Yelp
Do you want history, knowledge and humor? You will get that here. Such a great visit to Manatawny. Tour guide was AMAZING! Bar tender was great. Drink menu had tons of options and all were specialty and unique. Ingredients were all fresh. Certainly a place to check out with wonderful service. Great deal on Groupon too!

Yelp
Celebrated 5 years with MSW with special Tastings, craft cocktails, food trucks, fun and games. We will definitely be back for a stillery tour and more spirits: whiskey, vodka, rum, and gin.

Yelp
Still works aar 9PM last night was the best place to be at with friends catching up. I went with my fiance and a friend couple. I was being introduced to gems of Pottstown that I never knew about, like Slyfox and this. STILL WORKS. From the beginning it was a warm and welcoming vibe by Jennifer and Laura. There was another couple there that moved over at the bar to allow enough seating for us. Looking at the menu I found about 6 different drinks I wanted and settled on sharing a flight and a bartender recommended drink called The Katherine. Katherine drink included apricots and sweet black cherries with their honey whiskey. OMG this was the perfect drink to top off a great evening and week. I am so glad the bartender paid close attention to my preferences, usually an old fashioned, and was able to recommend this beauty. I want it at my wedding!

Yelp
The booze is delicious, the bartender Lauren is really nice and can mix a mean drink just for you, they sometimes have a good truck and the live music is always good. Throw in the fireflies and a pretty sunset on the front patio and you have a perfect recipe for great ~~ViBeS~~. 10/10, would recommend.

Yelp
I love supporting local distilleries, so I was super excited when a coworker brought us to this little corner of Pottstown to enjoy the Brewery and distillery. We got there around 4:30ish and it was extremely empty, but by 6pm the place was vibrating with people of all ages and even puppies! The space inside is comfortable, and has plenty of seating in comparison to many other distilleries I've been to. They also have outside seating with cornholes games and MOST importantly a food truck! This particular night it was Captain Crabbies and they had a great array of seafood: fish tacos, shrimp burrito, lobster rolls, lobster tots! All the items were really delicious and more importantly extremely reasonably priced. I paid $8 for a great lobster roll and a small side of coleslaw. As for drinks, I decided to start with one of their crafted cocktails, they reminded me of the types of drinks you get downtown in the speakeasies like Hop Sing. I started with the Rumrock Peach which was a mixter of rum, peaches, and citrus. I was hoping it would taste more like peach, instead it tasted very heavy on the citrus. I wasn't a fan. For my second cocktail I decided to ask the bartender about the whiskey, since they sold a clear whiskey, which I had never seen. He said it is the closest to a tequila and he recommended it in a margarita. So I went with that recommendation and was very pleased! It tasted like a smokey margarita. As he made my drink the bartender said they are opening up another location in Passynuck, which is cool, bc that would be much closer than this location to my place. Overall I really liked the vibe here, music was great, delcious cocktails. Although they did not have a happy hour going like Sly Fox did, they gave you $5 off your bill if you took a short survey, so that made up for the $10 cocktails. The reasons I am taking a star off is because the service was particularly slow. There were not many people there and I think due to drinks being so labor intensive, the service was really slow. Which brings me to my next issue - the lack of air conditioning. It was an 82 degree day and inside it was hotter than it was outside. They do have fans, but I was literally standing waiting for my bill and just growing a sweat mustache. So besides that, I would return - maybe in the cooler Fall weather.

Yelp
It's a shame I can't give you 6 stars! My brother, his wife and mine did the Sunday Private Tasting and we had a blast. My brother and I have visited many distilleries, but this was a relatively new experience for our wives. Our tour host, Melissa, was so warm and welcoming. She patiently help all of us understand the working of the distillery and guided us through a tasting of the variety of spirits that they produce. We also enjoyed the cocktails, which is normally not my thing, but the "Bad Medicine" was amazing. It was one of the best tours I've been on and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to see how it's done right!
google avatar

Rula R.

Yelp
I can't believe this super cool distillery is one mile away from me. It's very chill and cozy. You get to play with dogs and board games. Also enjoy delicious cocktails. I can't wait to visit more and more!

Yelp
When the place first opened, I would've given this five stars. We went the other night and the food was barely adequate. They need to step it up.

Yelp
This place might be good. I'll never know. We tried to stop in for my birthday at around 4:30 p.m., and were brusquely informed by the bartender that they were closing at 5 for a private party and that we should leave. When we stated that they never posted that information on their website, they snottily responded, "Well, we posted it on Facebook." Look, I work in web content, and you never, EVER rely purely on social media for news and announcements. Especially with FB's crazy algorithims, many people might never see it. You need to put stuff like that on your actual website. Otherwise, you do your customers--and yourselves--an incredible disservice. I still managed to have a fun birthday in spite of Manatawny's smug incompetence. But they'll never get a dime of my money, or the money of anyone else I know. Thanks for nothing.

Yelp
Booze is not quite top shelf but decent. Happy to support local distillers, but I go to Bluebird if I really want to good stuff

Nicholas S.

Yelp
The atmosphere was great, and the bartenders were efficient. They weren't conversational because it was busy. I felt the cocktail menu lacked variety. Almost every one contained some sort of citrus fruit. Everything we had was good, though. There was live music on Saturday night (Alex Dan O'Brien). It was fun. He interacted with the patrons and took requests for covers. They have an entire wall covered in merch. The rocks glass was only $5, but the t-shirts are not labeled as men's and women's, so we bought the wrong one... I'll update this later if they let us exchange it (all shirts were the same price). phillyfoodandbrews.com

Yelp
We took a tour of this place over the weekend and it was a lot fun as we were a small group and could interrupt asking questions but still getting all the fun facts about their operation and line of spirits. With that said they were just not to my palate. I'm not a fan of gins or rum and the vodka was a bit harsh. I'm intrigued that they are aging the vodka and going to release it in January of next year. Their whiskey has potential though. So I will definitely keep it in mind to try again in a few years after they have had more time to age it. As for the staff and the tasting room/bar, both are really nice and I wish I lived closer so it would be less of a hike to come back and sample their wares as they develop their line. I also expect them to be pairing with SlyFox across the street on whiskey barrel aged beers in the future, so keep a look out of that in the future as well.

Kristin W.

Yelp
We attended the cocktail class in Pottstown and it was fabulous! Lauren and Adrianne were amazing hosts. They made us feel welcomed and kept an upbeat conversation going the entire time They shared some history on cocktail ingredients and instructed us on how to properly construct a delicious cocktail. Lauren and Adrianne answered our many questions with genuine and well thought out responses. We would like to see them host a theme cocktail class; like tiki drinks so we could learn the history while mixing up the concoctions. Purchasing a bottle of spirits, making drinks with that bottle, and leaving with the recipes written down would also be a nice addition to the experience. We will certainly sign up again. Thank you, Lauren and Adrianne, for an informative and entertaining night out.

Yelp
Hidden back in an industrial park near the airport, but definitely worth at least one trip. My husband and I went there tonight for first Friday; apparently in addition to a food truck showing up, a rescue organization also shows up. Liquor, a food truck, and puppies sounds like the perfect date night to me. Sooo hipster. It takes forever to get a drink, but each cocktail they make is pretty intricate, so the time taken is understandable. And the wait is worth it, the cocktails are delectable. Unfortunately the wait for the food truck is just as long, so we ended up walking over to sly fox for dinner. Seating inside and out is limited, so if you wanna hang outside, be sure to bring some collapsible camping/tailgating chairs. Blankets would be acceptable too. Good vibes and good drinks. We shall return.

Yelp
Great as a wedding venue! Fun atmosphere and friendly staff, would be a little cramped for bigger weddings, but for smaller events it works well.
google avatar

BJ E.

Yelp
Yes, go here. If you love local distilleries, you've got to put this place on your list of ones to visit. The staff is friendly, the tours are informative, and most importantly.. the drinks are amazing. They have great events here so be sure to check out their website for the most up to date list of things going on here. I'll be back again soon!

Yelp
I hosted an event this month with Manatawny Still Works, and it was wonderful. Their team was accommodating and made sure that everything we needed was in the space, was on top of our packed bar crowd and allowed us to bring a food truck in for hungry guests. During the event, I got the Ginger Mojito, which was so good! My understanding is that they change their menu monthly, which I was actually really impressed with. Our guests loved it, and wound up staying longer than our event because they were having such a great time!

Yelp
Amazing cocktails. Anna and Tiffany are wonderful hosts. Nick is just OK, according to Anna! Fun fun place. Don't miss it.

Yelp
My husband and I were visiting Sly Fox Brewery next door when we heard about this place. So we gave it a try! The place is lovely!! The people are super friendly. The drinks are delicious and freshly made from local ingredients. You can stay and have a fascinating tour and learn about distilling process. Fridays, they have a food truck parked out side you and order food bring it in and enjoy it with your beverage. Would definitely recomend it to anyone looking for a different experince. New activities and fun things to do with friends/family.

Yelp
Love this place. If you like whisky this place is home. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Yelp
My husband and I just discovered this place and we will be back. We loved the vibe - very happy to have found this place practically in our backyard. I will not pretend to be a whiskey connoisseur, but we enjoyed our drinks. I had the Netflix and Chill and my husband tried the whiskey flight of #4, #7 and #8. He did not care for #8 but really enjoyed the others. The bartenders were friendly and Tiffany knew how to guide us to drinks we would like. We also loved the resident greeter, Piper, a curious dog who would often come over to check up on us. The one disappointment was that the food truck Foolish Waffles did not show up, apparently due to the freezing temperatures. The food truck was actually a major reason we ventured out that night, but even though we did not get to partake of that particular experience, it was still a fun night out. Would definitely recommend checking them out.
google avatar

Shannon P.

Yelp
Food Truck Friday was divine featuring Heart Food Truck. The food was delicious, eclectic and affordable. They do parties, private events and you may see them at your next venue. The Sill Works is special, unique an has private parties and tours.
google avatar

Casey S.

Yelp
Get the livingsocial coupon and you really cannot go wrong. It included a tour, cocktail, souvenir glass, and tshirt. The distillery itself has such a cool vibe. Everything in there including the bar and the tables is made from refurbished wood. The aged whiskey is the best of the liquids but they all had a good taste. Get the cocktails, sit and relax, or play cornhole outside. You can't go wrong.
google avatar

Theresa H.

Yelp
Great craft drinks and food trucks in a cool atmosphere! Bring your own food and snacks and hang out. Love to go when the weather is nice and bring washers or bucket ball.
google avatar

Rob F.

Yelp
Great experience with my wife! Nice to finally have something fun in the back yard. I had a dry martini with their Hidden River aged gin. My wife enjoyed "the Sexy Panther" also made with gin and fresh berries. Friendly atmosphere and offers tours of the facility. Sly Fox brewery directly across the street if you're looking to hop around.
google avatar

Brittany P.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Every time I go the bartenders are very kind. They will hand make any drink with fresh ingredients. I had a tender once make me something that wasn't even on the menu and it was fantastic! Go here!
google avatar

Jay W.

Yelp
We stopped in for a couple of drinks. The bartenders were pleasant enough, but their knowledge about what they were serving varied greatly depending on which was serving you. The service was also surprisingly slow. Bartenders were making each drink individually, rather than making several order of the same drink at the same time. This might be excusable for expertly made drinks, but these were not. The alcohol itself was disappointing as well. The gin was very harsh, very piney. The brown whiskey had a overly smokey scotch flavor that is not something that I go for, but others might like. The vodka and rums were both fine. I wanted to try the white whiskey in their manhattan, but I was told that they ran out... which was weird. Apparently they make the manhattans in a batch and then pour them out of a container.

Stella M.

Yelp
We used the Yelp coupon for the tasting/tour and it was a great experience. Highly recommend for a fun weekend activity. It included tasting a great deal of their spirits, a cocktail, souvenir glass, and tshirt. The cocktail was delicious and the ambiance is really cool. We definitely want to go back when it's warmer so we can sit outside. Also want to go back for a bottling event and a cocktail making class.
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
Can't believe I didn't know of this place until recently. An amazing local distillery with the best cocktails! Each drink is made with fresh ingredients and delicious. Try the tequila mockingbird, you will not be disappointed!! The tour was also great. Extremely informative and the tour guide Dan was great! With the tour you get a tee shirt, a glass, free samples and a free drink! You cannot beat it. I will be coming back here a lot
google avatar

Kristina C.

Yelp
A great addition to the sky fox circle. Really neat signature cocktails. I had a whiskey pumpkin martini recently - I don't even like whiskey- and it was so good. Nice live music and frequent food trucks.
google avatar

The Daily Soirée ..

Yelp
I went to a bottling event here a few weeks ago. It was great to not only see how the whole process works, but also a chance to be a part of it. Even though my friend and I had to leave early and couldn't stay for the full tour, the staff was nice enough to walk us through a quick tasting. They were extremely knowledgeable, and even without the tour we still left knowing a lot more about distilling than we did going in. While we didn't get a drink at the bar, the cocktail menu looked pretty awesome so I definitely hope to go back sometime soon!
google avatar

Carolyn L.

Yelp
My husband and I normally bring our friends here when they come out of town to try the drinks and play some corn hole. Then walk over to sly fox for food (fridays they have food trucks). They have all sorts of distilleries from whiskey, to gin and i think vodka as well. It's definitely a good start of the night.
google avatar

Tymia W.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I bought the Groupon for the tour/cocktail, glass and short and it was totally worth it. We enjoyed the tour and the drinks are very interesting and good!! Definitely try the Dark 'N' Stormy! Nick is an awesome bartender and we'll definitely be back again in the near future.

Keith K.

Yelp
Went here for the first time last Sunday and it was great!! the drinks were great, the tour was amazing. The tour guide-Anthony-was fantastic, he took all questions and had a fabulous sense of humor, and really knew his subject matter. Drinks are freshly made and i now love their vodka. Only downside to me was, the male bartender had (missed his name) almost zero personality. the 2 females were bright and chipper and made up for him. I highly recommend this place and my wife and I are planning on returning for a first Friday event with the food trucks and the puppies.

Shannon S.

Yelp
I held my class reunion here and the staff went above and beyond to ensure it went smoothly. Not only do they have the best cocktails in the area, I'd highly recommend them for any event.

Tom H.

Yelp
A must if in the Pottstown area the tour is well worth it. The decor is awesome. I believe it was Anthony who gave the tour. He is very informative

Luisa C.

Yelp
Great place, good ambiance, lots of potential. Service could improve. Even though is understood they do not have a food menu, they should at least offer some popcorn or chips or anything to snack on while you have a nice drink.

Mattie S.

Yelp
LOVE the cocktails here. Always fresh ingredients and well-crafted combinations. The cocktail menu is constantly changing which makes it better every time my boyfriend and I go back. This is truly a hidden gem in Pottstown. I wish they opened another location in West Chester or Phoenixville!
google avatar

Paula T.

Yelp
Stopped in with some friends after noise-level at Sly Fox was off the charts. Surprisingly, quiet there even with the placed filled. You can sit at the bar or at a table. Had their Rum and it was delicious. Good place to go after a movie or on a warm summer night.

C W.

Yelp
Visit sometime in July, 2014. I stopped in to pick up a couple bottles to bring down the shore with me for vacation. Unfortunately, I've yet to tap into the bottles, so this review is based off very little, other than my experience. I stopped in, loved the feel, decor, and vibe of the place. It was a Friday afternoon in the summer so it wasn't too crowded but I'd say there was a healthy 20 or so people either inside, or outside for their Food Truck Fridays (which I would LOVE to try sometime). The bartender seemed friendly, and all the drinks she was putting out looked well done and tasty, maybe just a tad slow. I will adjust my review after another visit. I understand there is/was some slight Sly Fox connection with MSW, and thus may have determined their location..but oh how I would have LOVED to see something like this in downtown Pottstown to add some character...PLEASE CONSIDER this!!!
google avatar

Julie E.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Five of us were visiting family in Birdsboro and decided to make the trek out to Sly Fox for some delicious beers. As we drove in, we noticed the Still Works and decided to stop for a libation on our way out. The atmosphere is great...still feels homey even thought you are in a large, industrial space in an office park. Staff was very friendly in helping us choose our drinks, which were delicious!! We picked up some great swag at the gift shop, which was more like a boutique that a distillery gift shop. And best of all? Being an airhead, I left my ID there. One friendly phone call, two days, and a kind note later the ID was back in my hands. Thanks guys! We will certainly make a return trip.

Sheryl J.

Yelp
Ahhhmazing cocktails served here! It's a cool place to meet friends and hang out. Kid friendly too! Best when there's a food truck and live music (check their website). Service can get a bit slow when the place gets crowded and the drinks are a bit pricey.

Jonathan F.

Yelp
I did not know this place existed. Stopped in and was pleasantly surprised. Great atmosphere. Laid back. Delicious whiskey and great service. The keystone whiskey is amazing.
