Mandarin Gourmet

We’ve been going to this Chinese food place for years. The reason is it’s higher quality that most other places around the food is quick to come out and the service is always great. They have a bathroom and it is accessible. The parking lot is huge and I’ve never seen it full so you have plenty of places to park you can enter through two roads. So it’s a quick In-N-Out. I’ve gotta say in all the years going there. I don’t think they’ve ever messed up my order although funny story back in the day when we went there years ago to eat inside which we used to do a lot I was cut off not from drinking alcohol but from drinking soda it’s a funny story that we still remember till this day. The guy was worried about my health and said three sodas is too much for you even back then when it was by the can and I was paying for each individual drink, but even eating inside is nice. They’ve always been very nice and accommodating.

Got take out and was pleasantly surprised at how good everything was. Hot and soup was perfect (not too thick, not too soy saucey) and the family style tofu was on point. Will definitely start frequently as my go to Chinese spot.

Terrible, stingy restaurant stay away. When you walk in its like a library dead quiet no music and a bunch of old people. The food is cooked frozen food they heat up in 5 mins and they barely give you any meat with any of the dishes. Got chicken lo mein and it was mostly noodles. And the drinks have no trace of alcohol just straight Juice and ice. They must be trying to ration things there or something. Do not go.

Place has lunch specials. Waiter is quick and place is quiet.

We love the whole experience at Mandarin Gourmet! The food is delicious, the atmosphere is comfortable, clean, and classy, and the service is terrific! The appetizers are our favorites around—especially the crab rangoon, scallion pancakes, and chicken wings! Portions are generous, and drinks are great, too! This is our go-to Chinese restaurant!

Food had no flavor. Lobster sauce was watery and meat pieces minuscule. No taste at all. Egg lama in was also without flavor. Like eating oily spaghetti wit brown food color. Have been ordering Peking Ravioli for many, many years and all restaurants gave 8 pieces but not Mandarin Gourmet, we got 7 pieces. The ginger sauce came in a tiny container. Definitely not enough. Very disappointed. Spent a lot of money for a lousy meal. Don’t recommend this restaurant.

I love this place, the basil fried rice is really good. The spicy tofu chow foon was really good too. And also the drinks are great - My favorites are (1) the top gun, (2) the suffering b. and (3) the pearl harb are the best.

Highway ROBBERY By far there are plenty of other authentic gourmet places, this was once upon a time Owners have changed hands twice in 3 years, getting progressively worst. .50 for ginger sauce despite substituting duck sauce and getting ginger they will make the consumer absorb all these extra unnecessary charges The quality is a fraction as is the quantity it’s shrinking Again once upon a time I would Do Lunch Take out Then Come Back SAME Day for dinner dine in! Lunch on a Friday Listing of daily Chefs specials in addition to daily lunch specials. Friday was curry chicken chef special . Ordered Curry chicken dish and it was outstanding mild curry flavors, velvet tender chicken and alot of it .., excellent Egg drop soup , chicken wing came with lunch special, Condiment Duck sauce size soup bowl dish was a bit cost conservative One chicken wing was ok Ordered appetizer of bone in ribs... Only 5 ribs for 14.95... expensive Ribs ok with glaze, char, a bit too much gnawing or chew . The curry chicken flavors I will eat again in Fridays...

Ambiance was pretty decent i here for a sit down chinese spot. Service was fast but the server was a bit pushy on high priced items which made it awkward. Shrimp dumplings (3/5) Sizzling triple delight (3/5) Beef with string beans (3.5/5) I would come here again as overall its pretty solid

We used to live in Brighton and get takeout from here. Their sesame chicken is the actual best. We live further now and still come here to get takeout. So good.

Hearty portions. Comfortable ambiance. Has the garlic chicken, scallops with wine sauce, pea pods with mushrooms and oyster sauce, and the beef with SZECHUAN sauce. I liked the chicken dish over the beef dish. The scallops were the surprise yummy dish. Lightly battered with a sweet snd sour wine sauce. I would get that again. Nothing was too spicy. Very comfortable dining room

Very well-made, Chinese food with a flair of Szechuan influence not completely but a well balanced menu that is prepared very well. The staff are attentive and friendly as friendly as a Chinese people can be lol. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for really good Chinese food in the Newton area.

Went on a Saturday around 8:15p & there were only 4 tables occupied & it's a fairly decent-sized restaurant. Clean & decent decor. Ordered Hot & Sour soup. Decent. Fried Peking Ravioli were slightly undercooked. Main course was Orange Beef. Large pieces but not too many. Not the best cuts of steak, was ok. Service was fine. Not sure whether we go back given the number of choices in the area.

Food Mediocre at best, it reflects the price point. Service was ok our server asked to take my plate while I still had food in my mouth. Ambiance meh. If you want a cheep lunch it's a great place.

The only reason for the second star: because it is Christmastime and I don't want to be brutally honest. The service: 4 people: 2 with same order. Only one of the 2 made it to table so that 3 orders received. we all waited for the missing order. The dual order: scallops in rice wine sauce. The wine sauce, very well done. The scallops, unrecognizable, overcooked and tiny bay scallops. Not expecting that or the tempura type batter that had too much baking powder/soda. I may sound fussy but am not. Quality has plummeted. Avoid. Perhaps owners may want to do something about this. Or not. Ambience remains great. Location great. parking sketchy.

This is an amazing spot for Chinese in Chestnut hill! We used to come in a lot for dine in, but we haven't been inside since the owners have changed hands in the last 2 years, we haven't had a chance. The actual interior was very cozy and clean with plenty of space for groups and families so we're looking forward to dining in soon! Some of our top favorites have been the Kung Pow Chicken, pork fried rice, and the Chicken Lettuce wraps for entrees. The Crab Rangoon's are wonderful. Perfectly cooked and I love you get a generous amount of them. Some of the other apps we tend to go with are the steamed dumplings, scallion pancakes, and spring rolls. The Spring rolls aren't my favorite, but I am a huge fan of the Scallion Pancakes and the Crab Rangoons here!

The place has a lot of seats good for gatherings. The waiters are so not helpful tho. They first give you no time to decide but when you do ask for more time they go and come back in like 20 minutes! When you ask them about things on the menu they just say "yes!yes" so several times i got the wrong thing. Food wise, get the crab rangoon! Loved it The sesame chicken is good too, honestly same as other places The sizzling chicken has good veggies but it is super bland Idk i have mixed feelings about the place

Had a nice lunch at Mandarin on a dreary Sat. afternoon. Split the amazing scallion pancakes and a pork dish with basil. It was supposed to be spicy but barely registered on the spice scale. Tasty nonetheless, very fresh flavors. That scallion pancake def. needs to be ordered though. Nice service, relaxing room, need to go back on a weekday when the lunch specials are happening.

I've been going here for years and it has really gone downhill since the ownership change. Food was greasy and bland. The food is completely different than it was. They no longer serve free lunch specials in weekends. The place was virtually empty at lunchtime on a Saturday. A shame.

Staff at host stand were very nice. The male who was our server wore a winter parka the whole time and was not very friendly. There was one table of 2 young diners next to us who left just after we were seated and I noticed their plates looked untouched but they didn't ask to take it home. No one else was in the restaurant. Our order came out remarkably quickly and the food was hot. But, the scallion pancake was very oily. The chicken wings were huge and unappetizing. There was no meat on them. Looked like turkey wings:) The sesame chicken was covered with bright orange goo and it was all batter with basically no chicken at all. The basil chicken fried rice had literally one sliver of chicken. The veg book choy dish looked ok. Wouldn't go back and wouldn't recommend.

The quality of food has declined measurably since the new owners took over. I've tried ordering a couple of times and the food is not even close to what it was when Ben and his family owned it. That includes the quality of ingredients, the flavor and the quantity.

Great food and always very punctual when we order take out. It's a local favorite for a reason.. Recommend!

I've gotten take out here 5 or 6 times in the past couple of years. I had eat in a couple of times before the pandemic. I would go more often, but it's not usually my route home. This week I asked them if they had Ginger Chicken. They said no. I asked if they would make it for me, they said Yes It was good. I have always been happy with everything I've gotten from them. It's not cheap.

Mandarin Gourmet is the best Chinese restaurant I've ever been to. It's very clean, food is excellent quality. Service is excellent. Spoke to a couple of people that work there and they were very easy to speak with and conversational. I love the cleanliness of Mandarin Gourmet because I have not seen it that clean at any other Chinese restaurant. I will not go anywhere else moving forward. If I'm going to eat Chinese food I would prefer Mandarin Gourmet. Check it out it's in Chestnut Hill!!!

Delicious food and rinks. Clean restaurant and friendly service. Thai Basil Spare Ribs and Mai Tai are phenomenal!

I use to like the food in this place but the past 3 times I have been disappointed because the food was lacking taste, the hot and sour soup was cold and no taste. I have the house special fried rice and was horrible. I mean who screws up fried rice. I have them a chance three time but unfortunately they lost a couple of customers . In addition:The waiter was rude too and even though I said to give me time to look at the menu he turn around and came back In less than a minute, please be polite and courteous.

Downhill - all the way down!!! This place used to be a gem under prior management Benny Wu. But after dining there the other night we will never go back! The service was the worst I have ever seen. We had to ask the waiter to come over and take our order after sitting down for 20 mins. She seems annoyed we called her over, and more intent on resting her head on a booth. The place wasn't even that busy. We had to ask for a drink three times before she brought it to us. The order was wrong on two dishes. Even the other male waiter seemed indifferent o. Working. Just terrible. Terrible terrible terrible. So disappointed because we used to go here at least once a century a month. Oh Tsang, how we miss you!!!

I am a celiac, gluten free, they make the best pineapple fried rice, gluten-free. The woman taking the orders are very careful and they are very concerned to be sure that I get what I order.

Always lived in the area and never got around to trying out Mandarin Gourmet. Got takeout for 3 for dinner and was pleasantly surprised! We ordered two appetizers (chicken fingers & scallion pancake), and two entrees (fried rice & pad thai). The food was prepared well, and came out quick. The chicken fingers were golden and good quality. The scallion pancake was good, flaky, but not the best I've ever had. The fried rice was good, very distinct flavor (differs from other Asian restaurants) and not greasy! The pad Thai was just OK- the noodles were flavorful, but there was a lack of peanut sauce, just crushed peanuts on top which caused the dish to lack the flavor it is meant to have. Would for sure recommend ordering a couple apps and veggie fried rice, pad Thai would be ok to skip. Generous portions.

I do not like to write negative reviews. 1st and last visit to this restaurant. disappointed is the starting point, with a middle and end point of RUDE. The RUDE server was THE reason for this review ... 3 weeks later. I wanted to wait to cool off before even considering writing a review. I'm guessing since they effectively have a mini monopoly as putterham has no retail areas other than these few little shops, they can get away with being so rude. But there are several other options within a few miles, so no, they cannot afford to be so rude. Needless to say, never going back, I'll drive the additional 2-3 miles. For a place with charming servers. Though it's fair to add that when presenting the bill I did get a smile. Too little too late sir.

I use to frequent this restaurant but had not been here in years. The food was just ok, service absolutely the worst In have ever had, cocktails were tasteless, I will give them credit of a very clean establishment! Never again will I be back!

The change in ownership has caused this restaurant, which was never outstanding, to decline. Just when I thought they could not sink any lower, they have. A while back, I ordered the Pad Thai. My fault for expecting good Pad Thai from a Chinese restaurant; it was a clump of noodles with no shredded carrots, no crushed peanuts, no scallions - just a clump of unseasoned noodles with no Pad Thai sauce and some chicken dumped on top. Yes, they have increased the prices and slashed the menu of many of its previous items - and I mean MANY. I picked up their now limited menu not that long ago. I used it to order tonight since I have a family member who has always loved this place. I tried to go "cheaper" by ordering only two items that could be shared. When I picked it up, I was shocked by how much it was. I looked at the receipt which they don't give you - I had to physically take it from the back of the counter where the always unpleasant employee was running my card. The item to be shared had increased by $3.00 since I last picked up the menu. I had asked them to switch out the two pieces of beef teriyaki for chicken teriyaki. They charged me an additional $2.00 for this. The rude employee who is NEVER friendly told me that any substitution is $2.00. Of course this is stated on the updated menu. Imagine putting two skewers of chicken in instead of the two beef ones and charging for that. I told her that I should have been told that when I had called in my order. I get that times are really tough for restaurants and I deeply feel the need to support restaurants and their employees. Their complete disregard towards their customers is inexcusable. This place won't fail - it's been an established place in this neighborhood for far too long. With all the bad things I've detailed, I must say the quality of their food has significantly declined. Not recommended.

I have been going to this restaurant for many years. It used to be an old-school Chinese restaurant run by a very nice family. In the last couple of years, it was sold. We were pleasantly surprised that the menu was revamped and the food is still very good. The reason for my two star review is that the service has really gone downhill. A few of the servers stayed on with the management change, but there is one waiter who is extremely rude and really terrorizes everyone. In an effort to rush me out, he actually took a plate of food from in front of me while I was eating. I used to love eating here, but from now on they will only get take-out business from me.

First time visit a few months ago and was happily satisfied with all of the servings. Been back 3 times. I don't like recommending specific dishes because we all have different palettes, but I do order different dishes each time. I love the flavors in their dishes and can't wait for my next visit. It's a hit.

Delightfully & refreshingly lite and full of flavor. Not greasy, not heavy, not skimpy--it was more than I expected for take out in the middle of the week. Thank you Pork Strips-- sent in a bit of brine in takeout container so it's warm and moist! (Pork dries out fast so this is great) Gai Po Lo Mein that comes w/ generous side of Chicken Fingers Tons of fresh crisp veggies, chicken & (be it very tiny) shrimp in a wonderful brown sauce--great balance of noodles and veggies Limited chicken and shrimps but that's because it comes with a handful of chicken fingers Peking ravioli were surprisingly good. Not an oily bland dumpling like most places. Solid mixture, and well fried Bravo mandarin gourmet

OK, OK ...your table's right here. And you're ready to eat, water's here and you'll have serve ware coming we'll have hot and sour soup, mooshi pork, mooshi veg, scallion pancakes, pot stickers, veg dumplings, chicken lettuce wraps, veg. fried rice and chicken with broccoli...all that came out in 8 seconds...wphew. I was exhausted just ordering. Talk about a RUSH order! But rewind to the bill...all of that $120.00 + in a Chinese restaurant and water drinks only. Something's wrong with that picture. Let's back up...rush, rush, rush...not necessary. If they came in the door they'll be here for the meal...RELAX. Make their experience quiet, calm and memorable. You don't have a line waiting to get in...Take your time you're not FAST food. THINK of yourselves as GOOD food in a pleasant atmosphere ready when you are ready.Large portions could be smaller and less expensive appealing to a wider audience who will go out and tell their friends about the EXPERIENCE and the food. On that topic ... it could be less Americanized. Experiment with specials from your gramma's recipes...you'll be surprised. JUST slowing down would be a surprise. Yes, we'll be back.

Ordered food through takeout as dinning room was closed. The chicken low-mien was good. Chicken wings were huge but were not thoroughly cooked (pink inside). Chicken fingers were took thick from the batter. I prefer thin chicken fingers where you get to the chicken faster. I also ordered a shrimp fried rice with beef and broccoli and they were so so. I think that because it was at the end of the day the quality wasn't as good as in the past. Service was fast as I ordered over the phone and only waited a few minutes when we got there. The ambiance of the entrance is cozy with a bench for sitting.

Well I just got my veggie fried rice , Ribs and egg drop soup! The soup is always great! I don't get the wings because they are always dry! Ribs had no taste! Not hot ! The rice is always great! Please try better or customers will not be happy , and Ho some where else!

I really hate leaving a bad review but am left with no choice. We've ordered from Mandarin Gourmet a few times with no issues and found the food generally pretty tasty. Tonight, we ordered 4 dishes and as we started to eat we noticed a huge maggot in her beef and broccoli. Obviously, disgusting. We called the restaurant to complain and ask for a refund or credit for our meal but the manager refused. They said they would give us a credit for the beef and broccoli but not the entire order. We found that unacceptable since we were too grossed out to eat the rest of our meal, and felt that the restaurant should make it right after making such a nauseating mistake. Their second suggestion was that we file a complaint with their 3rd party online ordering service since we ordered through the website. This didn't make sense either since it was the restaurant's fault and their responsibility to rectify. Ultimately, they refused to to refund or credit our meal, didn't apologize and took zero accountability, blaming their distributor. If we had been offered an apology, or even an attempt credit our meal for a future purpose, we might have been able to look past the maggot - unfortunately they've lost a would-be loyal customer.

TLDR: 0 STARS. WORST restaurant experience I've ever experienced, given a plate of onions as "chow mein" and manager was incredibly rude and disrespectful. Waiter Ricky was very kind, we are so thankful for at least 1 person being kind to us so we gave him a big tip. I RARELY give poor reviews, unless I think they truly deserve it. O STARS. If I could give this 0 stars, I would. I have NEVER been treated like this before by any of the many restaurants I've visited and/or reviewed. We ordered vegetable chow mein. After waiting 45 minutes (2 tables that came in after us had their foot served 10 minutes before us... but fine, wasn't planning to mention that if the rest of this experience hadn't happened), we received a plate of onions (see picture). We kindly let our waiter know this wasn't what we ordered. The waiter Ricky was so kind and apologetic, but when the manager (short woman, short hair, hot temper) was called over she rudely asserted this was chow mein, we would have to pay for it, and she would let us "get away" with this again. My boyfriend has eaten chow mein a LOT since he was little, in America and India, and has never ever seen it like this. We showed on Google what ALL pictures of chow mein look like. She then argued this was "traditional" style and we should've known that (it is not written anywhere on the menu at all, all it says is "something familiar"... good lord, you think anyone can assume what that means?! Of course it's familiar, it's an American favorite! To think we'd "assume" it "something familiar" meant "traditional" is frankly idiotic and self-centered). The ignorant, ill-mannered behavior of the manager was shocking and disgusting. I have rarely, if ever, sent food back in my entire life. A plate of onions is NOT CHOW MEIN. I have asked my friends who live in various parts of China and Taiwan, they agree that the manager was trying to pass off some sham plate that wasn't chow mein. Even if you look up "traditional chow mein" online, NOTHING looks like this. We had to argue for 7 minutes until she finally agreed not to charge us for the chow mein (we had ordered other items, too, those were fine), but she told us off again and warned us she wouldn't let us do this again next time we came in. NEXT TIME?! HA! Also, the Thai iced tea is extremely watered down, and the pan fried noodles barely had sauce. I was going to actually give a good 4 star review if she had behaved nicely, but her crass attitude towards us was disrespectful and revolting. I have friends who own restaurants I spoke to about this: every single one said even if the manager had been right (she wasn't), you still don't charge for something a customer didn't expect to order (or even order AT ALL), ESPECIALLY when they've ordered other items they are paying for. We had been debating whether to try a new place, Mandarin Gourmet, or go with an old strong classic. This is DEFINITELY not worth it. Next time we'll go to Golden Temple.

Food was great. Always has been. We usually do takeout but decided to eat in. We arrived at 8:30 on a Monday night. We ordered 4 items and 2 diet sodas. At 9:10 our waiter was very nice came over with 4 take out containers and a bag. He apologized but said they were closing We didnt finish and had to fill the boxes, pay the bill etc. A woman started cleaning our table while we were still eating. This really ruined a very good meal. I called the next day spoke to the manager and his response was to come earlier!!!!!!!

Sooo much more food than we anticipated! Food was delicious but I was definitely stuffed after half of the first dish we ordered. Quick and food quality Chinese food with kind and efficient staff and workers.

Not very impressed. Person was polite when I picked it up but the food was nowheread good as the persons manners. Perhaps I'm spoiled by good Chinese food as there is so much Quality Chinese in New York But I have to say that the mango chicken looked nothing like the picture on their website. Very on the appetizing. Large portion of chicken but it look like it was drowning in some type of watery sauce. The mangoes were sort of mushy. Not very good. I tossed most of it unfortunately. Plus maybe it's a New York thing but we don't get charged for white rice. And that is an extra charge of two or three dollars on their menu. Which I wouldn't mind if the food was good

Ordered online and they got 2 dishes totally wrong. Asked for egg drop, they gave sweet and sour. Asked for shrimp, they gave chicken. The saving grace is that the food we did order is yummy. Please get it right, guys.

We have enjoyed Mandarin Gourmet many times over the years. Today we tried a new dish, Chicken with Garlic Sauce. When I placed the order, I said that there should be no mushrooms due to an allergy. When we opened the chicken with garlic sauce it did not look like we expected and tasted spicy. The menu did not indicate spice. When I called to voice my disappointment and to ask about the ingredients in the dish, the manager replied with "that is what it is" and "it is spicy." She was not able to give a complete ingredient list. When I explained that the menu did not indicate spice, she said it did. As you can see below, the online menu in fact does not indicate spice. If the manager had apologized or offered a refund, we would have gone back.

Mandarin gourmet has always been a family favorite but not somewhere we visited since Covid pandemic. There was also a change to establishments ownership during that time limiting our interest. But recently when looking for a nearby restaurant to seat a family gathering of 22 people Mandarin Gourmet not only worked with us to create an appropriate menu (thank you Kevin) but seated, waited on us (thank you Sang) and serviced us with incredible customer service as well as a very delicious dinner. We order takeout from here often because it is close by and it is fast. Like, we will call in the order and it will be ready when we get there 10 minutes later. Overall, the food is reasonably solid. Definitely not the best Chinese in the area, but solid. It caters to the local crowd, which tends to skew older and less adventurous palate-wise.

If I could give 11 stars I would. Best Chinese food around. Hands down better than anything I've had delivered, which is why I'm so happy. They finally showed up in a delivery service. As you know I don't eat beef or pork. I did at one point, I can tell you best spare ribs, Teriyaki beef, Pu-Pu platter for one enough for two meals. Owners super nice! If you have to make substations on pupu they will. Fried rice awesome. ( house no pork) 1/2 size plenary for 2.5 A lot of their chicken dishes serve white meat, and spice factor right on point. I don't think I've ever had a bad dish there. I love this place, especially when the order is correct the first time. Dine in fabulous, take out fabulous and delivery we shall see.

For years we've been looking for a good Chinese restaurant in the area for years and never really felt satisfied. This one definitely hit the spot. It's convenient, with parking, it looks decent compared to a lot of other ones and the food was great. Will definitely be going here again.

We have been here twice now. It is quite a far drive, about 45 minutes, but our family decided it is worth the drive. The food is presented beautifully, quickly and is delicious. They have many Mai tais to choose from and the wait staff is friendly, attentive and quick. The restaurant is very comfortable and Kevin, the manager, is a wonderful manager. The next time we go, we will take pictures and post them!

I really enjoyed this both when we ate in and the two times we got takeout. It reminded me of some Chinese restaurants i went to when I was younger where they concentrated on making great food and not on the most modern flashy decor or $15 cocktails. Quality experience.

Honestly, this is one of the better Chinese places I've been to in the entire Boston area (that I've been to), and certainly the best in our Brookline/JP area. I'm not sure why so many mediocre reviews, I would say it deserves at minimum a SOLID 4. That being said, I'm going to round up in most cases just because most of the items I have tried are definitely 5 star worthy and FRESH. Here's my reasoning: The chicken is not frozen or anything like most Chinese restaurants. This place actually takes freshly cooked chicken (you can tell when you bite into it). They even do their coatings from scratch with what I believe is a rice flour batter (gluten free) to make the crispy chicken/beef options and honestly they hit the spot. The fried rice is freshly made (you can tell because leftover/re-heated fried rice tends to clump) and it is SUPERB. The rice noodle dishes are also a fantastic option - the medley of noodles/veggies/protein is flavorful and not oversaturated nor soggy and they come in great sized portions. We really love this place. The owner is super friendly and also extra cognizant of catering to gluten free as my fiancee is celiac and, since they make everything fresh, she's always able to accommodate things to make them gluten free for us to enjoy. We try to go to this restaurant once in a while, but recently with restaurants being closed down, it's been our go-to takeout place and it's such a treat every week.

I am reeling from the conversation I had with the manager just now. We ordered and picked up food from here tonight, expecting the same quality food we normally get here. Unfortunately, the sesame chicken had gone rancid. I've never tasted anything like it. I figured maybe it was just a bad bite, so I tried a few other pieces of chicken--all rancid. Times are tough. I get it. I called the restaurant and kindly asked to be reimbursed for the dish that was inedible. The girl told me the manager would call back, which she just did. Not only did the manager NOT apologize; she told me that it was my fault for not bringing the rancid dish back to Brookline (I live 20 minutes away). She refused to refund me. I'm honestly shocked by how poor the customer service is. It's right on par with the rancid chicken. I'm never going back.
