Cecilia Chiang Documentary ‘Soul of a Banquet’ Tells a Powerful Story | Eater

"Chef-restaurateur Cecilia Chiang served family, banquet-style recipes in a refined San Francisco setting and played a pivotal role in changing Americans' understanding of Chinese cuisine by preserving and interpreting a nearly lost regional style. After fleeing China and eventually becoming the sole proprietor of a new restaurant, she built success through warm hospitality and a knack for explaining dish origins, even as her approach differed from the Cantonese-leaning eateries in Chinatown. The documentary Soul of a Banquet frames her career alongside a traumatic return to Mao-era China and ends with a sumptuous banquet that illustrates how cooking these dishes keeps childhood memories alive; although she sold the restaurant nearly three decades ago, Chiang—now 99—is still active in the city's food scene and remains an inspiration to chefs and diners." - Greg Morabito

Excellent! Great portions. Tasty flavors and each dish piping hot! Will visit again next time in town

Google
Very comforting and delicious food. The portions are generous, so when I order delivery here I have 2 or 3 meals of tasty leftovers. I have ordered delivery several times from here and am working my way through the menu. Cumin lamb - extremely tasty, subtle and rich flavors General Tsaos Chicken - American Chinese classic that hits the spot Sesame Chicken - nice crunchy fried chicken very similar to General Tsaos but with a more subtle flavor Dry braised string beans - very nice though surprisingly spicy. Some people in my family found it a little intense. I liked it but just know it’s spicy Mixed Steamed Vegetables - seriously who would have guessed streamed vegetables could be so satisfying. It came with a gravy in a separate container so you could measure it as you like Hot and sour soup - simple classic Satisfying and comforting are the two words that sum it up. Since I found it this is my go-to for Chinese delivery. It hits the spot every time.

Delicious/spicy/high quality meat on the orange chicken. Lunch special for less than $12 with rice AND side soup. Good service, mom and pop vibes. Will be back

Google
Sadly this place was terrible. I've had it before a few years back and liked it but :(((( Sogggggy Sesame Chicken, withered string beans. It was delivery, and did take 1.5 hours to get here, even though I live less than 10 mins away. But I don't think even that timing can account for the soggy and witheredness, as the breading on chicken was SO thick and spongey and the beans were not crunchy AT ALL. Rarely am i a bad review giver but this was really bad :(

Google
Terrible food, oily mess and terrible quality with horrible taste! I regret ordering from here! Worst chinese place I have ever tried. Fried rice so freaking oily that oil was dripping while I had my first bite. The salt and pepper fish was a joke it was just deep fried oily messy dough with no fish inside. So oily I had to trow out the whole thing. I saw bad reviews and I was like how bad it could be. Trust me it's so bad! Chow mein had weird smell and meat smelled bad as well def not fresh. Terrible food I will never ever order from this place. They made me hate chinese food! Don't be fooled by get one free scam. You are paying for junk not food.

Google
Amazing lunch special deals. Super legit Chinese food in the neighborhood. Generous portions. Lunch specials came with free hot and sour soups. Would definitely order again from. 5 stars

Yelp
My kid really loved the soup dumpling here. If you dine it, the place is very cozy and you get your food right away. The couple who works there is very friendly.

Yelp
I went there and it was a big mess around. Asked if they were open bc seems it was a house instead a restaurant: MESSY and filthy house. I've stayed bc I had food there before and was good... I was kind enough to ask the woman there, with 2 children doing their homework and a baby on her arms for the note-taking pad, because I saw her busy dealing with her children's, so I've wrote my order for her. Even paying at the cashier (the same woman)... I was the 1st customer there, then showed up a family and to-go orders... I've waited patiently for my order, which was the last order to be handled to me. I've asked my order to go. I had a beer while waiting. I had food there before and was good. This time WRONG. The food was COLD, bland, overcooked and instead of chicken orange they gave me eggplant, which was ok but not what I've ordered. I've called them back to let her know, but seems English is not her second language and barely could speak. I was KIND enough to tip her "the mother" because I saw her overwhelmed with all the mess in that HOUSE-restaurant $10 over my $78 bill. They lost my business and not going back there anymore.

Yelp
Sometimes you just have to ignore reviews and see for yourself. This place was so delicious!! Big portions, cheap prices, and very sweet staff. Restaurant feels homey and the ambiance made the food taste so much more nostalgic, will be visiting again!!

Yelp
The food is absolutely delicious. Small place but super cozy and very clean. Service was great, and they were very fast as well. I ordered the Beef Chow Mein + the beef chow fun + Thai iced tea, everything delicious Also the portions are big, can share with two people. I'll be back

Yelp
I forget to take photos. First of all, the owners here are absolutely nice and kind. They can accommodate your order and very easy to communicate with. The food-wise, I wasn't really impressed. It's a typical Chinese American place. We ordered cumin lamb and tomato beef over rice. The cumin lamb was a bit too salty and with way too much onions. I wish it could have more protein or just less onion. The flavor was all the way on top. For the tomato beef, I would say it lacks of a strong flavor. The hot and sour soul also came with it, but it was way too starchy. I might not come back as I hold a higher standard for Chinese food.

Victoria G.

Yelp
It used to be my go-to chinese in the hood but not so much now. They need to pay close attention to online orders. E.g. I ordered & picked up a NON Spicy entree today but what I got was SPICY. Also, the fortune cookies were super stale & rubbery! They expire folks, so please try one before serving it up.

Jessica B.

Yelp
I hate to do this but absolute worst food I ever ever tried in my life. Disgusting sweet and sour chicken smells and taste sour in a bad way. It's not even red and I took one bite to taste and instantly felt sick to my stomach. I paid 102 dollars the crab rangoons are ice cold. Shrimp is soggy and no flavor at all everything went to waste. The beef in the chowmein is grey and holographic it's so weird. The sweet and sour sauce smells like vinegar and it's watery as idk what there was also a piece of white chicken floating in it. Update... definitely got food poison from this place I'm literally dying

Yelp
Ordered three soups and every single one was disappointing in their own way Hot and sour soup was bland and lacked any substance Chicken and corn soup was cold, tasted like metallic, barely had any corn West lake soup was salty beyond salty Cheap horrible quality

Yelp
Hate to leave negative review but seems like they listen. I think they need to either get the chef to try some Chinese food elsewhere or get a new chef or do a different style cuisine lol Never had I had such bad Chinese food and my parents used to own a Chinese restaurant in SF so I know how hard the business is and wish small businesses to success. All the beef was so tough and rough, I do not understand how it can be so overcooked like that. The sauce for the pan fried noodles was so off lol Not the right taste at all. The Siu mai, just the look is off, never seen such darkness before and yes, the meat was rough and not juicy at all. Store brought frozen Sui mai looks better than that. Potsticker was not juicy at all, seems like they need to get a new recipe from YouTube or something cause (assuming they make it themselves) their recipe sucks and if they store brought it, then they need to buy another one lol Mandarian Claypot, it was so freaken bland. You see all the sauce there but it tasted like nothing. This was off the Chef's Special Menu so you should at least get that right. Just nothing tasted right except for the General Tsao Chicken lol

Yelp
Came to San Francisco today wanted some good Chinese food so I found this spot call mandarin house I order the chicken chow mein and some spicy chicken I told Them I wanted it extra spicy in 10 mins they brought me a huge plate of chow mein the food was so hot while I was eating it that's how fresh it was and the chicken was so spicy I had a good experience prices are fair for the sizes of plate especially in San Francisco I hope this was very helpful to all.

Yelp
Our office will order from them when we want Chinese food. Their food is tasty and when we get a large order in, they would throw in free items for us. We love the fried rice, salt & pepper pork and eggplant, those are our favorite items to order every time. Our last order was $200.00 with 19 items total, said we would need it by 11:30, they came a little before noon. which was fine because they don't open until 11am and we know they still need to get our order and deliver to us. They are very nice people and would continue to order from them because they have great service here.
google avatar

Yelp
I got the Salt and Pepper Fish. Only recommendation, try to make it less salty if possible. Other than that, I liked it. Got that with white rice.
google avatar

Charlotte T.

Yelp
Not gone wait to leave this review. Just left for here, I order fried chicken wings, sesame chicken, and shrimp friend rice. Whatever they use for their sauce that has a butter taste is over powering. The chicken was soggy and didn't eat it. The rice however was good. They didn't give me utensils, condiments, or napkins. Make sure you ask for some, if you choose to dine her. I will not be returning especially when a 15min wait turns into 30min and the food sucks.
google avatar

Yelp
I was sick a couple weeks back with the flu. After days of not wanting anything, the hunger inside of me started craving Chinese food. Not wanting to go anywhere, I checked Yelp and found this place close by that delivers. I ordered my usual favorites, crispy egg rolls, war wonton soup, beef broccoli and fried rice. There were leftovers for days, which was great since I hadn't had the energy to shop or cook for myself. The food hit the spot and made me feel better.

Kenneth H.

Yelp
Update: My friends who lived in the area decided to come here for take out ( I begged them to go elsewhere) and my old review has not changed much unfortunately. Hot and sour soup: where is the hot and where is the sour? Chow mein: it reeked of sour smell, bit into the meat and spat it right back out. Beef Fried Rice: I counted 4 pieces of beef and it was tough as nail For almost $60 worth of food we didn't even eat more than 3 bites of each, had to spend more money to grt tacos at a nearby taqueria. Don't come here.
google avatar

Renee M.

Yelp
They were having a BOGO promotion on uber eats. We got BOGO beef chow mein, hot and sour soup, and veggie egg roll. The chow mein is alright. Beef is tough tho. I will try BBQ pork next time. I don't think the hot and sour soup was hot and sour. I think it tasted more of a soysauce based soup. I added extra pepper and vinegar to make it taste better. I recommend the veggie egg roll. I will definitely try other items from this place

Yelp
The lunch specials here is where it's at. Have ordered take-out and delivery from Mandarin House SF on a handful of occasions, and they've yet to disappoint. This Cantonese style food has got the flavors, quality, and authenticity pretty secure. Prices too! Like I said, those lunch specials (it comes with half rice). The scrambled egg prawns were superb. Proteins galore. Black bean calamari is always one of the top dishes in my book. And lastly, string beans with fried tofu! Note that I haven't dined in before, but when I came by for a take-out, I arrived at the pick-up time and still had to wait another 10+ minutes. It was a bit awkward bc there were only two patrons in the restaurant (this was before quarantine, of course). Anyways, I wasn't sure what the hold-up was, but they are definitely on every single delivery app. I saw at least four pads near the cash register, to take in all the orders. In short, food was delicious, delivery was fine (not the restaurants fault), preparation took longer than expected, but portions were plentiful for this value. 4 stars.

Jenny M.

Yelp
We ordered take out from this restaurant yesterday. The food was the worst we've ever consumed.no flavor and very poor ingredients. Our order consisted of fried rice, beef with broccoli and spring rolls. The fried rice was basically plain rice with a few peas ,carrots and very little chicken. No flavor and very poor presentation. Beef was very tough and broccoli was yellow and brown and very old. Spring rolls had cabbage only. In all $ 60.00 for this take out. Not coming back.

Yelp
Best Chinese food on the Bernal Heights side of Mission street to eat in. The lunch special was very delicious with the fried rice and Mongolian beef. The prawn chow mein was delicious. I will make another visit to try other dishes in the menu.

Yelp
We ordered via GRUBHUB today to be delivered for my cousin's birthday. Sweet n sour pork Salted fish and chicken fried rice Salt pepper prawns King pow chicken Delivered hot and tasty in 35 minutes. Good authentic flavor. We will order again . Maybe go into their location.

Yelp
Visiting from out of town, the food here bombbbb!!! The best orange chicken I've ever had! Very nice staff. Highly recommend

Yelp
So ya'll know I love to review a place after I have been there a few times. With that said I've been here about 5 times now and OMG. ITS. SO. GOOOOOOOOOOOOD. I'm a SF native and mostly grew up in the Richmond district where there are a LOT of Chinese places. I've had my fair share of amazing Chinese food and this place is my favorite in the city. Shirley, the usual waitress, is so friendly and often gives complimentary goodies when you dine in. She may be the owner too (not sure) but she's usually at the front. But yeah love her. Oh even if you get delivery they give free goodies (see menu). WALNUT PRAWNS. HONG KONG CRISPY STYLE NOODLES. BEEF BROCCOLI. CRAB RAGOON. Damn... like so f*cking good. I swear best walnut prawns in the BAY. Like those things are good even the day after and you know that's not always the case with those. And the SIZE?!?! Look at them babies (see my pics). Also little things like they pack up your food to go for you... love that. Delivery, dine in, take out... EAT HERE. ITS AMAZING AF. PS: They we're missing food menu photos. Lol I specifically brought it home to take these pics. Enjoy yelpers

Yelp
Food is honestly 3 stars. I'm just writing this review to show the piece of plastic I found in my garlic pea sprouts. I ordered from Postmates because Covid and pulled it out of my mouth. Such a choking hazard. Please be careful.
google avatar

Robertta M.

Yelp
If a Man answers for take out, make sure it's Robert!! When he answers and takes ur order, food always gets to you fast sometimes under the 30 min mark, food is still piping hot and delish!! You tell Him exactly what NOT to add and it's done correctly. When someone other than him, sorry but the women NEVER get ur order right! Foods delish and tasty!
google avatar

Susie C.

Yelp
We ordered sweet and sour pork, Michu pork, orange chicken and some kind of fried noodles.... most of the food tasted pretty good ... could have been better but it was cold when we got it. The noodles we got were very hard and seemed a bit old... it was okay not sure I would order here again
google avatar

M J.

Yelp
Worst chinese food I have ever had! I ordered grab rangoon, sweet and sour meatless chicken and another meatless dish. Nothing was tasty but the sweet and sour meatless chicken was godawful. The crust of the meatless chicken was soggy that I threw the entire dish away. The sauce wasn't good either. Some chinese restaurants are sometimes hit n miss but this one is a total miss - for the money you pay here I would have expected better food. Even Wild Pepper is better than this place.

Xavier S.

Yelp
Great service! Not much to say about the ambiance as I got takeout; but sesame balls were still warm and so delicious. Got the meatless Kung Pao chicken and it was a good large portion that i split into 3 meals. The green beans were also delicious, spicy and crunchy with lots of flavor.
google avatar

Miguel M.

Yelp
This place was amazing. Good customer service. Food was amazing. We come here every other Sunday and every time we come here the owner knows our order. We came back this Sunday, we haven't been here for almost a month. When we're about to tell our order first thing he said WELCOME BACK. I was amazed he remember us and our original orders every time we visit. We always get SALT AND PEPPER FISH AND PORK CHOPS. So delicious. Their fried rice so yummy. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Keith D.

Yelp
Wow! I was impressed! Fresh food! Everything tasted like homemade!! My wife liked it also! She is Chinese, so as you can imagine, we eat alot of Chinese food!! Not too expensive compared to other places. We will be back!
google avatar

Jeannette C.

Yelp
We ordered here off doordash. Their beef chow fun looks great but didn't have much flavor it was very bland. Mongolian beef was fine you can tell they packed more vegetables in it to make it look like a larger serving
google avatar

Jacqueline H.

Yelp
For delivery, we ordered the General Tsao Chicken and Sweet and Sour Pork. Both were delicious with great flavor, though maybe a bit on the sweet side. They were huge portions, but didn't come with rice, so be sure to order rice on the side. Delivery wise, they delivered it in a bit less than an hour, which is pretty normal for SF delivery and service was perfectly fine! Would order again when I'm in the mood for Chinese!
google avatar

Jonathan M.

Yelp
We've been grieving the closure of Nan King Road Bistro and this just got closest to the best Chinese delivery in SF for us. We need to order and see a few more times but the entrees had their own flavors and tasted great. We are encouraged that there is hope for Chinese delivery in SF.

Les D.

Yelp
Usually have a young woman working the register she is very nice, but came in today to get my regular plate of fried rice and general chicken. But instead I wasnt greeted and helped a guy who has attitude problem who didn't understand what I wanted to order he tried to over charge me $10 I do not recommend eating here.

Yelp
For a delivery service, especially Chinese food, is rare to find 4 stars. Shockingly found mandarin house and decided to give it a go. On a Sunday afternoon, I ordered my food for delivery on 2:11pm. I received my fresh and piping hot (emphasis on FRESH & PIPING HOT) food after 37 minutes, which is really not a bad wait time at all. Seafood tofu soup: It's only for two people max. There was a good ratio of soup to seafood and tofu. Tons a little tofu pieces yummm. Bbq pork fried rice: I like to base how good fried rice is the color of the rice (white rice means there's not much flavor) and the flavor profile in all. There was tons of flavor with the BBQ pork fried rice. Big plus bc it was still hella hot when I got my food. General tsao chicken: At first glance, I thought my general tsao chicken was burnt lol. But don't be fooled. It's actually the dark delicious tangy sauce that they mix the moist, well cooked chicken. It's really easy to over cook chicken but they did a really good job at making sure the chicken was cooked properly. This place doesn't give shitty service at all so that's a huge plus. The food is a bit overpriced compared to other Chinese restaurants but you are paying for quality. This is probably my go to Chinese food delivery now. Yay.
google avatar

Ray N.

Yelp
Got take out and it was as great an experience as you could hope for. Food was still hot (fried things were still crispy!!!!) and mad flavorful. Delivery time was super quick too and faster than the estimate. Food was pretty good. Standard Chinese fare, but the best version of regular and just short of exceptional. I got the salt and pepper pork chops and chow fun with prawns. The chops were flavorful and crispy. Some might think salty, by I'm into that. Chow fun was fun; adequate number of prawns.

Yelp
FOOD ALLERGIES BEWARE! We've been regular customers of Mandarin House in the past year, but my experiences tonight crossed the line with the chef/owner. We ordered our delivery meal without alliums, with confirmation from the chef that onions and garlic would be removed from the dishes, per our usual request. The original order never showed up after 90 minutes, and I called in to replace the order, re-confirming no onions or garlic. 30 minutes later, we had our dinner in hand, which shows you how quickly they can cook and deliver a quick meal on demand. To our surprise all of the dishes were heavily laden with garlic! I called into the restaurant, and the chef didn't even apologize for her error, after remembering our discussion. Her comment was "they were very busy and she forgot." I asked her what she would like to do, since this is a severe allergy for us, hence inedible; she said that we should wash the food off with hot water and then microwave the meal. I asked for a refund, and she said she would give me a "credit on her wall" for my next meal. Frustrated with me, she hung up without any additional explanation. We won't be ordering from here in the future. If you have FOOD ALLERGIES, I caution you not to order from here, since a mistake is potentially life threatening. If you're looking for a quick Americanized-Chinese food delivery restaurant, then this is your spot in the Bernal Heights/Mission.

Eksel P.

Yelp
I guess if you know nothing about Chinese food, this is the spot for you. Dry, salty, and overcooked. Who are these people putting up 4&5 star reviews. Ridiculous.

Virginia S.

Yelp
Small family owned but delicious and very kind staff very good American Chinese food and free delivery service I enjoyed my meal here very much

Yelp
Underwhelming experience. 2* due to quality of food and speed of delivery. First time ordering here. Not my first choice but the place delivers to our house. Slightly expensive - San Francisco price in full effect. 1). Food. Slightly below average. My standards were lowered to begin with. - General Tso's Chicken. Below average. Not tasty. This is usually the best and safest selection in any average restaurants that I've been to. Maybe not this place's specialty. Not recommended. - Chow mein. Not bad and on par with what you would expect from your average locations. This is a safe order that wont leave you disappointed. Had enough beef portions with our order. - Chicken Wings. Cant help but compare with SOCAL salt and pepper wings. Its not bad but its not great either. Does its job if you are hungry. 2). Customer service. Ordered online and the food was delivered within the time allotted, HOWEVER, food arrived cold upon my receipt. If the restaurant sped it up, the food might be slightly warmer so we can enjoy it better. Q: Did it do its job? A: YES. THE FOOD SATISFIED OUR HUNGER. Q: Would I order here again? A: PROBABLY NOT DUE TO QUALITY OF FOOD AND SPEED OF SERVICE. Q: Would I recommend the place? A: ONLY AS A LAST RESORT. Q: Where are the pictures? A: SORRY, NONE TODAY. WE ATE IT ALL LIKE A PACK OF WILD DOGS UPON DELIVERY. Q: Did this review help? A: I HOPE SO.

Yelp
I called the restaurant to check on my delivery status, as it has been 1 hour and 15 min since I placed my order through Yelp/Eat24/Grubhub/whatever it is now. The woman who answered frantically said my order was on the way. But didn't ask for my name. Or phone number. Or anything else about my order. I'm not hopeful I'll get my food. Reserving full judgment until I get my food. Full review to follow. . . UPDATE Got my food 30 minutes later than expected. Two items missing. Not sure if this was a restaurant issue or an Eat24. Regardless, Eat24 credited us for the missing items. Food quality was fine. Nothing spectacular, nothing awful. Can't say I will order from this place again.

Yelp
Love having this restaurant so close by, the food is great and the service is fast and friendly. I highly recommend them, especially the Sizzling Black pepper Beef. If I could afford ordering every day I would.

Carla R.

Yelp
I have ordered from Mandarin house for over a year now and they never disappoint. The ONE time I was not happy with them they corrected the problem and brought me what was missing from my order. RIGHT AWAY. I am reading these negative reviews and I have few things I want to point out. FOR the people saying the food is soggy, it's not that bad. What do you expect getting food delivered? Go eat there or pick it up yourself & there will be no problem. The lady who answers the phone is SUPER nice. Just pay attention when she's reading the order back to you. Food is delicious, you get free fried rice when placing an order over 40 bucks. COME ONE people what more do you want?

April M.

Yelp
One of the best Chinese restaurants in SF on my opinion. They never failed to give me delicious food
google avatar

Thomas D.

Yelp
We ordered Hong Kong Crispy Noodles with assorted meat. (pork, beef, chicken and some kind of fish). It was not good--there was a strange taste and odor and unfortunately, we decided not to eat it. I also ordered Chicken with Mixed Vegetables and that was just ok. It didn't have the greatest flavors either but it was edible nonetheless. The Chicken Fried Rice that we added was tasteless and not very appealing. Uninspired and lumpy. The on-line ordering process was very easy and the delivery was prompt which resulted in hot food. That's a good thing. I don't think I will order again though. I miss Shiso! That's what this space used to occupy.
google avatar

Rebeca S.

Yelp
Very solid lunch specials, highly recommend the Kung Pao Tofu - they deep fry the tofu, which I appreciate. They come with rice and a little soup, pretty tasty and cheap, ready for pickup in less than 10 minutes.
google avatar

Jonathan D.

Yelp
I ordered online. I wasn't always a fan of everything I ordered, but they had some amazing food here - you can tell it's (typically) cooked up fresh. The General Tso's was often amazing. Curry chicken was also a favorite of mine. Unfortunately it seems they've stopped delivering to 94132 so I won't be a customer anymore. I'm posting this hoping they might reconsider...

Brittny S.

Yelp
This place was open when no other Chinese place was at the beginning of Covid-19. We tried it and it was good! We have a favorite place but they remained closed most of the first 5 months. This places prices are great for the food. The first time we got sweet and sour pork I didn't care for it but we tried it again and it was good. The bbq pork fried rice is good. Honey walnut prawns great. Broccoli beef is really good. Over all it's our 2nd go to Chinese place! Pot stickers are too thick though and spring rolls are too small. Only cons.
google avatar

Lani N.

Yelp
We ordered delivery. It was great! Food arrived piping hot within an hour. CRAB CHEESE PUFFS - B+ We love these but have had better. VEGGIE POT STICKERS - A+ Not part of our typical Chinese take-out order, but we just wanted some pot stickers. These had great veggies and were really flavorful. While crab cheese puffs are our normal go-to app, we'd just get the veggie pot stickers next time. GREEN BEANS - A+ Would order again. Great flavor. ORANGE CHICKEN - A Crunchy, saucy, flavorful. WALNUT PRAWNS - B Large portion. Tempura-style batter. Next time would order sauce on side. It soaked into batter there wasn't any by the time it got to our house. Probs would be an A in the restaurant.
