9 Best Hotels in Lake Como, From Celebrity Favorites to Historic 18th-Century Villas

"Once the lakefront estate of Italian opera singer Giuditta Pasta, Mandarin Oriental took over this 75-room grand dame in 2018. Milan-based designer Eric Egan made over heavy interiors (also behind the Belmond Hotel Caruso revamp), sharpening the meticulous gardens and floating swimming pool. Mandarin Oriental added a lounge for afternoon tea and a spa in the basement, bringing in Italian chef Massimiliano Blasone to oversee the resort’s restaurants and bars. This was the Mandarin Oriental's first European resort and a rare new arrival on the lake—yet it slotted into the scene seamlessly." - Antonia Quirke

The 20 Best Hotels in Italy: 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards

"A stay here is all about cultured ease and the kind of sublime Italian landscapes associated with grand tour oil paintings, rather than the selfie-mad scene of Puglia or the Amalfi Coast. Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como, the Asia-based group’s first European country retreat, is a renovation of an 18th-century opera singer’s lakeside estate, with immaculately tended gardens and a pool that seems to float on the surface of the lake. But it puts a spin on the old-school formula with classy mod-Med restaurant L’Aria under the guidance of Southern Italian chef Vincenzo Guarino and interiors by American designer Eric Egan that preserve as much as possible of the theatrical neoclassical atmosphere, while giving it a subtle Far Eastern twist. The main building, Villa Roccabruna—which contains reception, CO.MO Bar & Bistrot, Sala Mandarin lounge, and a lovely little basement spa—is the hotel’s opulent core. It also houses 10 suites; the other 63 rooms are spread around eight additional buildings on the shore-hugging property. Much is brand new, yet the greatest compliment one can pay this hotel is to say that it feels like it’s always been here, down to barman Luca De Filippis’s French 75 variation, made with local gin and linden honey." - Nicholas DeRenzo, CNT Editors

Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como

"Set the scene. It comes as no surprise to learn that this stripey lakeside residence with its eclectic tower was built for a 19th-century opera singer. The main building, fronted by a pool that seems to float in the lake, is just one of nine villas that emerge from verdant gardens landscaped like a set design for La Donna del Lago by Rossini—who was a frequent visitor back in the day. It’s a lovely, dress-for-dinner kind of place but somehow laid-back at the same time, glamorous yet also discreet. Mandarin Oriental has now put its signature swish on everything, making it perhaps slightly flashier and more traditional than, say, nearby Il Sereno, but not as formal and grand as family-run Villa d’Este. What’s the backstory? The main villa was built for an opera singer with the delightful name of Giuditta ("Judith") Pasta. After changing hands several times over the years, and adding outbuildings, the estate opened in 2010 as a rather solemn hotel called CastaDiva Resort, which never really hit its stride. Taken over by the Mandarin Oriental group in 2018, it reopened in April 2019 after a major refurb. What can we expect in our room? Most rooms have lake views and, quite rightly, don’t try to compete with them. The décor is very calming, with pale earth tones dominating and lots of natural wood (for example, oak parquet floors) and textiles. The Mandarin imprint comes through in a few East Asian touches, including framed works on cotton paper by Milan-based artist Shuhei Matsuyama. How about the food and drink? Chef Vincenzo Guarino is from Vico Equense, near Naples, and for all the global influences, showy technique, and presentation there’s something very rootsy and Southern about his approach. In a signature dish at L'Aria, he takes Carnaroli rice from a small local producer and turns it into a sapid risotto with a base of yellow tomatoes and baked milk, topped with basil shoots and red prawns cooked shabu shabu style. It’s no wonder the restaurant was awarded a Michelin star at the end of its very first season in 2019. Aperitivo time is a real treat, thanks to the bravura of head barman Luca De Fillipis (who the hotel’s engaging GM, Samuel Porreca, brought with him when he moved here from J.K. Place Roma). What’s the crowd like? Pretty international. It also skews younger than expected, and is a mix of honeymoon or anniversary couples, European long weekenders, small family groups, and the occasional fashion-obsessed socialite combining a stay here with a few days in Milan, a 45-minute drive away. Anything to say about the service? It’s everything we've come to expect from the brand, but with a light-hearted Italian touch. What’s the neighborhood scene like? With its own lake frontage, the hotel is a private enclave that most guests never leave, except maybe to take a motorboat cruise across to Cernobbio on the western shore or north to pretty Bellagio. There are plenty of walks on offer though, including an easy stroll to the nearby village of Tornio, whose church bells mark the passing hours. Anything else to add? The green details extend to the parts of the resort guests don’t see, like the offices (no plastic water coolers, each member of staff has their own refillable aluminum bottle) or the kitchens, where even the cling wrap, made from sweetcorn starch, is biodegradable and compostable. Anything you’d change? Though impressive, the pool that "floats" in the lake, with its teak decking and ship's railings, is a little incongruous. Is it worth it? The dollar count might seem high, but it does stack up when looking at the return on investment, namely the lakeside location, the reliability of the brand, and the top-notch service. And by Italian ultra-glossy standards, the two entry level categories (Superior and Deluxe) aren't even that pricey—though for a full lake view you’ll need to start with a Vista Lago room, which sells for $860 a night in low season. The Penthouse and Panoramic Suites are as spectacular as their elevated price tags suggest." - Lee Marshall

"Also in northern Italy, Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como (Lake Como) just debuted a redesign of the rooms in one of its buildings. They now have a modern and clean soothing look with oak parquet floors and green hues that mirror the surrounding landscape."

We spent 3 nights at the Mandarin Oriental Lago Di Como and wished we stayed longer because it was such a fabulous experience. We were graciously upgraded to a duplex suite in the historic Villa Roccabruna building. Of note, it has a more traditional design style than rooms in the more modern buildings. We found it to be charming, but guests should pay attention when booking because some people will not like the more traditional furnishings and bathroom design. ||The design of the CO.MO bistro was recently updated and was very beautiful and stylish, with amazing views of the lake from most seats in the restaurant. We had the most incredible eggplant parmesan and raw shrimp risotto at the restaurant and ordered them twice. Our dinner at L'Aria was also excellent and was a nice break from all of the traditional Italian cuisine that we had been eating. ||The infinity pool and pool service were incredible. Staff are always nearby and attentive, and were always quick to take drink/food orders and to bring towels when getting out of the pool. ||The private boat tour is pricey but is definitely worth the cost. For our 5 hour boat tour, we managed to make stops in Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna. ||The complimentary hotel shuttle to the city of Como was also great and provided us with a convenient way to spend a couple of hours in between lounging by the pool. ||Our stay at the hotel was a highlight of our trip to Italy and we look forward to staying there, again, soon.

The Mandarin Oriental Lake Como is heaven on Earth. Hotel rooms are spacious, comfortable and quiet. Food is wonderful at anytime: breakfast - I had the best cheese omelette of my life - lunch and dinner with a never ending wine list which makes wine lovers happy. Personnel looks after the guests with extreme care and show the highest professionalism. The pool and the solarium are incredibly gorgeous. Prices are understandable considering the place. If one comes he/she will dream about coming back.

A Place of Stillness, Style, and Soul – Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como||||We had the pleasure of staying at the Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como in October 2024, and what we experienced was far more than just a luxury getaway — it was a rare blend of tranquility, beauty, and meticulous hospitality, nestled in one of the most captivating locations in Europe.||||✦ Location & First Impressions||Tucked away on the serene shores of Lake Como in Blevio, this property feels like a well-kept secret — discreetly luxurious, far from the crowds of Bellagio or Como town, yet close enough to explore the entire lake region with ease. Arriving at the estate, you immediately feel the shift: from movement to stillness, from travel to experience.||||The grounds are immaculately maintained — ancient cypress trees, manicured gardens, and stone paths leading to private terraces with sweeping lake views. The integration of nature and architecture is effortless, respectful, and artful.||||✦ The Suite & Design||We stayed in one of the Duplex Terrace Suites, and the moment we entered, we knew we were somewhere special. The interiors were an elegant fusion of Italian classicism and Mandarin Oriental’s signature Asian minimalism: calm, neutral tones, bespoke furniture, and layered textures. While the suite was spread over two levels with generous space, the highlight was clearly the terrace — a private front-row seat to Lake Como's poetry.||||Admittedly, while the suite was stunning, we felt that certain elements (furnishings, finishes) were slightly more subdued compared to newer MO properties. However, the charm of the villa itself and the authenticity of the setting more than made up for it.||||✦ Service – Impeccable, Personal, Discreet||Service was flawless throughout. Mandarin Oriental is known for setting the gold standard in guest care, and this property was no exception. From the concierge who mapped out hidden villages for us to discover, to the pool staff who remembered our preferences after the first day — every interaction was thoughtful and warm.||||A special mention goes to Isabel, who went above and beyond to make our stay effortless. Her calm, solution-oriented presence and genuine warmth reflected the true spirit of hospitality.||||✦ Dining & Experiences||Breakfast on the lakefront terrace was a daily ritual we deeply cherished — a curated buffet and à la carte menu, served with panoramic water views and complete calm. The in-house restaurants were impressive, though we must admit that some of our most memorable meals were in small, local trattorias recommended by the concierge.||||The spa was another sanctuary — intimate, luxurious, and with a heated indoor pool that mirrored the mood of the lake. One can easily spend hours here without ever needing to leave the property.||||✦ Final Thoughts||Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como is not about spectacle, but rather about serenity, refinement, and timeless elegance. It doesn’t try to overwhelm you — it invites you to exhale, to reconnect with beauty, and to feel the quiet luxury of time well spent.||||This is the kind of place you think about long after you've left. Not just because of the view, or the bed, or the food — but because of how it made you feel: calm, seen, and rebalanced.||||We are deeply grateful for the experience and already look forward to returning.

My most favorite luxury resort in Europe. It‘s just perfect from any and every perspective: location, gardens, architecture, infinity pool, restaurants, rooms and especially service. Many compliments for all people working there - they know how to make you feel special. High society guests. Boat tours available with reservation. One small detail - breakfast buffet is not super huge, but a la carte options were amazing for every taste. Just in case, you don‘t find something special, kindly ask - kitchen will fulfill special requests without any issues. When eating dinner, chef will send you special appetizers as a gift - very lovely gesture. Mini bar snacks, coffee and all drinks included - no extra charge. Valet parking will take care of you vehicle (also no extra charge). Welcome surprise in the room was so lovely. Well deserved 5 official stars, but my personal rate would be 10 out of 10.

This was honestly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had! The staff were so warm and welcoming, and I have to give a special shoutout to Isabella at the front office—she made our check-in so smooth and enjoyable, taking the time to explain every little detail about the hotel and even its history. It really made us feel at home right away. Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como is just magical. The setting, the service, the atmosphere—everything was perfect. I’m already dreaming about coming back and spending more time soaking it all in. And I can’t forget the restaurant! We had pizzas for dinner, and the moment they started making them, you could smell the deliciousness coming our way. The truffle pizza? Absolutely amazing. Probably the best pizza I’ve ever had! Huge thanks to everyone who made our stay so special. Can’t wait to return! 😊

If you are planning your visit Como lake, you definitely should visit this place… Fantastic territory, nice service and … I’m not saying you have to eat pizza here (because all food here is unbelievable tasty) but this pizza… is just a masterpiece. And tasty. And yes, just take it anyway to try. To reserve a table they will need your credit card details, but that’s fine anyway.
