"How did it strike you on arrival?The bridge that connects Brickell Key to downtown Miami may not be a long one, but it’s enough to make guests of the Mandarin Oriental, Miami feel as if they’re entering their own little private sanctuary. Cutting a fanned shape into the skyline (an architectural element intended to evoke the brand’s logo), the hotel’s striking design and location set it apart as unique from the get-go. Importantly: Tell us about your room.Knowing that I would be spending a fair amount of time in my room, and that I’d have work to get through while I was there, I booked a Deluxe Veranda Room with the hope that I’d be able to spend much of my time “indoors” on the private veranda. It worked out well. Larger than a balcony but not quite as unwieldy as a patio, the furnished outdoor space offered an amazing little escape where I could work, but still feel like I was on vacation. (Potted plants are a nice way to create additional privacy.) The room's colors and accessories took their cue from the water, and included splashy bits of Asian-inspired art and design. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?Having a king-sized bed all to oneself is a treat no matter where you are, but the Mandarin Oriental’s gloriously plush bed and linens were sumptuous enough to make getting up in the morning a bit of a challenge. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that worth a mention?With a large population of families as guests, Mandarin Oriental rooms are spacious, and designed to entertain. In addition to flat-screen TVs, guest rooms include DVD players and iPod sound docks. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Marble bathrooms offer both a deep soaking tub and a walk-in shower. Plush terry bathrobes are the kind you’ll want to pack away, prior (and future) guests be damned. High-fashion house Shanghai Tang provides the bath products, which leave you feeling invigorated and smelling good. We all need some good Wi-Fi. What’s the word on that?High-speed Wi-Fi is free, and available on up to six devices at a time. Room service: Worth it?The in-room dining menu has an impressive (if expectedly pricey) selection, including a lobster roll ($27) and a spicy and crunchy tuna roll ($15). Everything was fresh. Did anyone on the staff make an impression?You don’t have to be a guest at the Mandarin Oriental, Miami to enjoy the range of globally-inspired wellness treatments on offer at the hotel’s three-story, waterfront spa. These massage therapists know how to work out the kinks, and deserve the many accolades they've received. Anything stand out about other services and features?There’s an intrepid sort of spirit that exists on (manmade) Brickell Key, which is evidenced by the hotel’s (also manmade) beach. With no pristine sun or sand to brag about, the hotel’s powers-that-be decided to build their own 20,000-square-foot private beachfront. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?Even though it’s just a quick walk or drive to so many of Miami’s most bustling neighborhoods (including South Beach), the hotel's "world's away" vibe makes it a wonderful place for a romantic getaway, or even a staycation. Bottom line: worth it, and why?It’s kind of a miracle that one could feel so secluded so close to downtown Miami, but the Mandarin Oriental, Miami succeeds at just that.
