Where To BYOB In NYC - New York - The Infatuation

"When you're on (or near) the Upper West Side and want to keep things simple with a couple of beers, a bottle of sake and some affordable sushi, Mangetsu is a great choice. The basic inside-out rolls are pristine, there's a generous chirashi bowl, and plenty of options that get wild with tempura, eel sauce, and pink soy paper. In the atmosphere department, there's not a ton going on, other than that pop hit you played non-stop during the summer of 2007. But watching the chef tightly roll maki, mound pungent fresh wasabi on ceramic platters, or top chirashi don with ikura is entertainment enough." - molly fitzpatrick, bryan kim, willa moore, will hartman, sonal shah

Our Favorite Neighborhood Sushi Spots In NYC - New York - The Infatuation

"Mangetsu Sushi on the (upper) Upper West Side has good-quality basic rolls, as well as more creative combinations. It's pleasant to eat in too, with window seating that looks out onto pretty residential buildings and a sushi counter where a chef who previously worked at Tanoshi is tightly rolling maki, mounding pungent fresh wasabi on ceramic platters, and topping chirashi don with ikura. Drop in for one of their lunch deals, or bring a bottle of sake to drink with a friend at dinner, and order one roll more than you actually need." - bryan kim, neha talreja, carlo mantuano, sonal shah

The Best Sushi Takeout Restaurants In NYC - New York - The Infatuation

"Just one block from the Great Hill at Central Park, Mangetsu Sushi is the answer to all your (upper) Upper West Side maki-on-park-bench needs. They make affordable, good-quality basic rolls—like inside-out tuna or shrimp tempura—as well as more creative combinations, like an NYC roll with shrimp tempura rolled with vegetables in pink soy paper and topped with spicy tuna and tobiko. Lunch is 20% off on weekdays, and lunch roll combos extend to weekends, too. Mangetsu also takes catering orders, in case your park hang is more of a party." - bryan kim, willa moore, molly fitzpatrick, sonal shah

Mangetsu Sushi - Review - Upper West Side - New York - The Infatuation

"Just one block from a sunny bench on the Great Hill, Mangetsu Sushi is the answer to all your (upper) Upper West Side sushi roll-and-stroll needs. The restaurant has affordable, good-quality basic rolls, as well as more creative combinations, and they also offer 20% off at lunch on weekdays if you're planning to sneak away from the desk for some sun. But eating in is a good option too, with window seating that looks out onto pretty residential buildings. At the sushi counter, you’ll get a view of the fish case, too, and the chef (who previously worked at Tanoshi) tightly rolling maki, mounding pungent fresh wasabi on ceramic platters, or topping chirashi don with ikura. photo credit: Sonal Shah Drop in for a casual daytime meal—there are lunch combo specials every day. Or bring a bottle of something to drink with a friend at dinner, order one roll more than you actually need, and listen to that pop hit you’d forgotten you played on repeat the entire summer of 2007. Food Rundown Tuna Roll An inside-out roll, with lean, clean-tasting tuna, and a thin blanket of rice. photo credit: Sonal Shah Shrimp Tempura Roll A juicy, crisp tempura roll—no complaints. Dragon Roll The slices of avocado feathered over the top look like dragon scales. The eel inside is meaty and there's just enough eel sauce to notice it. A beauty. photo credit: Sonal Shah Chirashi Don The sushi rice is warm and a little sticky, and there’s a generous amount of sliced salmon, yellowtail, tuna, scallops, ikura, and shrimp on top of this $35 bowl. The seaweed salad is a nice punchy addition, too. photo credit: Sonal Shah" - Sonal Shah

When a new little sushi place opened in the neighborhood we just had to go check it out. Intimate dining atmosphere, amazingly fresh, artfully plated , and lovingly curated menu. It was so great! My husband I got the poke bowl and we snapped pics of some rolls before they got served. Go now before it gets too crowded and you can say you went before anyone knew about them.

The food here is excellent. I have been to high end sushi places in NYC and I can safely say, this place has FRESH stuff. My kid loved it here, he was so happy he told everyone in his school his mommy took him to a great sushi place. You should come

Went on a Friday night, so the place was really busy with takeout orders and customers. The food was amazing though, I especially loved the dragon sushi. I would definitely go again!!

What a gem for the neighborhood a $15-20 sushi lunch special that is really A+ quality with top-notch fish and veggie ingredients and a cool, brightly lit interior with a sushi bar for solos and tables for couples and groups.

Had a poke bowl 6/21/2025. It was good and different, as they included wasabi and some ginger (pictured), on the side and easily removed, if you don’t want/like. The poke “sauce” had a hint of mayonnaise like taste to me; maybe the Japanese Kewpie mayo I guess. I asked the waitress if brown rice was an option, and not available. Maybe this can be a future, extra charged option, if demand is there to justify the incurred brown rice & cooker cost. Poke bowls I get from various restaurants in the LA area seem to have a sauce that is soysauce based (thats what it tastes like to me) and have never included wasabi and ginger.

The chef is well trained at some famous Japanese restaurants. Food is good and very affordable. Highly recommend it.
