Mangia Mi Review - Calistoga - Calistoga - The Infatuation

"Mangia Mi might feel like one of those places that play up the Italian stereotypes, with a Vespa parked out front and the “get sauced” tagline on t-shirts. But we’re willing to overlook all that for an order of Momma’s Meatballs and the excellent homemade pastas that change daily. Everything is delicious, but you should prioritize the tagliatelle alla vodka with sausage, Romano eggplant stack, and the garlic and parmesan focaccia. They’re also known for crispy New Haven-style pizzas, like the signature Mikey’s Mambo Italiano, with spicy Calabrian chili honey drizzle and layers of meat, which pair perfectly with $3 PBRs at Happy Hour. This is somewhere you’ll definitely need a reservation for, and they only take bookings over the phone." - Christina Julian

Unassuming store front, buts lots of nostalgic pictures and newspaper articles posted on the walls. Huge booths with room for eight by the looks of them. Service was great. We were met with a friendly greeting and not rushed to order our two pies. Both ordered well done, so they'd be nice and crispy. A meat lovers, which was loaded with bacon, sausage, meatballs, pepperoni and maybe some more...lol. Also had the plain tomato pie with a hint of fresh garlic, basil, and a light dusting of parmesan cheese. Highly recommend giving them a try, will definitely make the hour long trip again.

I only write reviews when food really knocks my socks off, and this pizza did it. We had half marg half special pie (pepperoni sausage bacon peppers onion and mushroom) and it was fantastic. Crispy bottom, delicious tomato sauce, high quality, real toppings. Great service too!! They are in the midst of renovations, but the food more than made up for it! We!ll be back next chance we get.

Excellent service! Not much to say about its location. Ordered three pies over the phone. No online service. They were done in around 30 minutes. The first was the Deniro special. This white garlicky pizza is delicious. A Mozzarella, spinach, roasted red peppers, ricotta. The second was the Meat Lovers. This one I did not enjoy as much. The rest if the family did, me not so much. The third was a cheese pie. I really liked it. Great taste, sauce to cheese balance was very good. This is a place to visit and grab a pie away from the busier Downtown New Haven.

Wow! This was worth the ride. Wooster Street with no tourist lines. Had a simple tomato and Parmesan, no frills. Perfect crust, good even char underneath, but the sauce was the star. Distinctive freshness and character. Slices stay flat while hot and slightly drooped as pie cooled. My last piece was as enjoyable as my first, and I ate whole pie. The Pizza Chefs in the kitchen are obviously Top Shelf guys. Just had the Clam and Bacon, as good as I expected. Very consistent Pizza here.

On a Positive Note: The customer service and great pizza. What more can one ask for? After reading several reviews, I ordered pizza from here on June 5, 2024 to take with me to a nearby winery. I could hear the kindness in a gentleman’s voice who took my order over the phone. My call was disconnected, however, the mystery man called me back. I explained that I was driving and must’ve been in a bad area - to which he responded, “ No problem, be careful on the road.” Upon my arrival, I was immediately greeted with a “hello” from a very welcoming man behind the counter, who I learned was “John.” John was as pleasant as I had read about from the reviews. He even offered to assist me with transporting my food to my car. (I didn’t know this type of customer service still exist.) Now, for the eats😋. My pizza was hot, fresh, with an even amount of cheese and sauce. I love when I enjoy an entire slice, only crumbs left behind. I also ordered a large salad - onions, cucumbers, mushroom and lettuce. My order was accurate and it was ready within the quoted time. Full disclosure- After sharing with a few other MU members I had two slices left, which I did not hesitate to hide/place in my car. I enjoyed them for breakfast today w/ my coffee. I would be remiss if I didn’t shout out the aforementioned mystery man, “Steve.” Steve introduced himself to me and let me know that he had taken my order. Steve wished me a nice rest of my day. I want to thank both John and Steve for the excellent experience. “I’ll be back,”(Terminator voice.)😊 The Verdict: This establishment was well worth it. I’m glad I decided to order food for my MU buds and I from here. A Daily Diner😋

Google
Best Pizza place near Quinnipiac. The crust was perfect and the ingredients were high quality. My cousin can't have gluten but they had a gluten free and cauliflower crust base that he said was the best gluten free pizza he ever had. Portions are great too - the calzone in the picture is their small.

Google
I wish I can give 0 stars . I put on my gps the closest pizza place and I guess I was out of luck that day that I decided to order from this place . I ordered a chicken cutlet and pizza and I was in disbelief on what I got . I did take a bite before looking closely because I was starving but on the first bite it tasted weird . So I opened up my grinder and it didn’t even have lettuce as I requested . It was soggy, no Mayo, burnt bread and I even found the ends of the lettuce. I called them to give them a complain and the person that picked up was the owner . At first I wanted him to make me a new grinder but then why would I want them to make me a new grinder after I’m complaining (iykyk) the owner offered a credit for next time . I said no , I’m not from a round NH and why would I come back ? All I wanted was my money back. He said he’ll refund it but he didn’t. I know sometimes we all have bad days but don’t take it out on your customers’ food .

Very kind guy who took our pizza order. Excellent real-deal pizza. Like they put some heart into their craft. Got the fresh tomato white pizza and loved it! Planning on coming back for more :)

Yelp
This New Haven style pizza (apizza) joint is nestled in North Haven. We would consider this to be a well-balanced pie. Not too thick. Not too thin. Enough char to show on your fingers. Melty cheese. Great specialty pies. Familiar New Haven sauce. We loved the staff and the laid back unchanged atmosphere. Great for a quick sit down or take out. We can't wait until the next visit!

Yelp
I first heard about Mangia pizza on Dave Portnoy's one bite pizza reviews. The pie looked amazing on the review. Sure enough the pizza was delicious when I ordered it! The cash price is cheaper so bring cash. I've eaten inside - but it's set up more for takeout. The pizza itself is really unique. It has an Italian bread consistency to the dough. The owner seems like a solid guy. He's always there and he's always cooking and serving. It seems like they have a family vibe there. Would reccomend!!

Yelp
Trying out Mangia Apizza for the first time as I was looking to grab a quick bite to eat with a friend on our way to a concert up in Hartford. He was familiar with the area and Dave Portnoy from Barstool had made a stop through here recently and gave it an 8.2 score. Any score over an 8 is his words worth a drive, luckily this place was nearby! We will greeted at the door welcoming us, pulled up to the counter and grabbed our pizza to go. We stuck with the basic, a large cheese. Price you might ask? $18.18. That's a terrific price these days for a high quality pie. The pizza was New Haven style of course, had a great char on it, slightly runny in the middle but that is nitpicking at best, no big deal! Pizza itself was delicious, good crunch and flavor. They have some booths inside if you are looking to dine. The New Haven area has no shortage of great pizza places to select from, you can absolutely add this one to the list!!

Yelp
I hold two foods in the 'happy foods' category....Pizza and tacos. When you eat either, it just makes your soul smile. If you are ever close to this happy food location, I beg of you, check them out! While visiting my sister we ordered several pizzas and I could have made myself sick eating ALLLL the pizza...We had the clam pizza (dear Lord in heaven, I need more of this in my life), the cheese (yes, yes, and yes) and the pizza with sauce only ( I didn't try it but it looked amazing and my family scarfed it down!). The only drawback with this spot is that it is in North Haven and I am in Georgia and they probably won't deliver....

Yelp
We ordered two apizzas. One fresh tomato and meat lover. Both were delicious. This was enough pizza for us to eat for two days. The employees were super nice and I would say that this is more of take out place rather than dine in. We will definitely order from here again.

Yelp
There are all kinds of pizzas, and I'm not married to any particular style. Good is good in my book. When you say pizza though, and I formulate an image in my mind, it looks like the Mangia Special. The Moz is melted just right. The outer crust is the right thickness. The undercarriage is thin, but thick enough to hold the ingredients and it's good chewy. It has good char, but not too much of it. The toppings look like old school pizza toppings. The meat (pepperoni, sausage and bacon) and veggies (onion, peppers and shrooms) are balanced. The red sauce looks and tastes great. This was my first visit to Mangia. It was my number 1 Yelp search result for North Haven pizza. There are some tables for inside eating, but the atmosphere is not necessarily a selling point. They did a brisk take out business while I was there. The pizza was as good as I've had this year. Also, the Mangia crew was very friendly and made me feel welcome. Even when, upon arrival, I changed my phone in to go order, to a dine in order. If you value great pizza and service, you should try Mangia. Thanks Mangia for a great experience. Happy Yelp #thankyouthursday ! Five Stars

Yelp
Driving down from the pizza wasteland that is Bristol I had high hopes for Mangia Apizza and my expectations were exceeded. When I lifted the lid on my small cheese pizza to go It was love at first sight. Picture perfect with the taste to match. The crust, sauce and cheese were all beyond reproach. No pizza is perfect but I can't find anything that I don't like about this place including the staff who were great. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Five star experience. Outstanding white clam apizza. Crust was perfect. Rivaled any crust I've had on Wooster. These guys know exactly what they are doing in the kitchen and on the floor. Interior of the restaurant was very clean with numerous booths - large and comfortable. Restroom was spotless. This is a great New Haven style pizza place. Ownership can't be beat. Good people.

Yelp
We avoided trying this place for quite sometime for no good reason other than it looked questionable as it's connected to a dive/biker bar. Finally decided that it might be a great pizza place and we were right. Definitely nothing to look at, as far as location or the interior of the restaurant, however for take out it is a good pick for the area. Their house pizza "Mangia Special" was so delicious! Also can't go wrong with a classic mozz or one topping pizza.

Dan B.

Yelp
Excellent pizza loved the veggie lovers. Crust is nice and crispy. Mozzarella was Was great sauce is perfect.

Maryann M.

Yelp
Amazing pizza. Perfectly cooked to our liking and hot. Top notch customer service. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
While up from Jersey today we grabbed some ahbeetz for my dad... old school with Foxon Park sodas. Too bad it's so far away. The classic crust and sauce... reminded me of Bimonte's when I was a kid

Yelp
I was just sitting at a red light, minding my own business, when I happened to look off to my right to notice what looked like a lot more cars than I normally see in that small parking lot. As I was contemplating this, I noticed for the first time a sign that reads MANGIA PIZZA. "Ooh!" I though to myself, "Mangia means 'eat' or 'eat up' in Italian! And pizza means pizza!" I went home and jumped online to scope out the menu online before calling in to order a pie a couple days later. I walked in to find the place bigger and with more seating than I expected. I picked up my pizza pie and buckled it safely into my passenger seat for the ride home. I snapped a quick pic of the pie before I mangia'd, making relatively short work of it. Yes, I ate that whole pizza in one sitting. It's how I roll. The pizza was great! Veggie pizza, no cheese at all...just about the best of such pies you'll find out there. I'll definitely pop in for another pie soon!

Yelp
This is good pizza, not the coal or brick oven pizza that this area is known for but very good.

Elinor H.

Yelp
Fabulous pizza every time! The only pizza where I can actually eat the crust. It's That good! Plus the customer service is outstanding! They definitely can hold their own in a very competitive area!

Yelp
What you want from any restaurant is to taste the passion through the food. You want to know the chefs care from the first bite. That's what you'll experience if you eat here. The owners are brothers that have been in the pizza business since they were thirteen and have worked in all the famous pizza spots across New Haven. They took all their experience and opened up Mangia using their own family recipes. They came over to not only ask my preference on how I prefer my pizza cooked (of course I told them to make it how they think it should be made because who am I?) but they also came over as I was eating to see what I thought. I always appreciate owners that care to receive feedback from their customers. I'm from NY so I wasn't in love with the Patriots gear they were wearing but the pizza certainly made up for it. If you're unfamiliar with the New Haven area type of pizza it's thin dough with a charred crust. Still has some chew to it but by no means is it a doughy style of pizza. Their dough is scratch made and cooked to perfection. It holds up firm and has a nice char. These are 12 inch thin crust pizzas so they're great to share with multiple people. I ordered a small cheese pie with half sausage and a small clams casino pie. All the ingredients used are as fresh as a moody teenager. Not only is the dough scratch made but everything is. They were making sauce for the dinner service when I got there around noon and offered me to try it and I'm glad I did because it was delicious. I wanted to climb inside the pot and soak in the sauce. I was given a house made loaf of bread to take on the road because they take such pride in what they do and wanted to share that with me. The price was another highlight. The owners specifically said they priced their food out to be approachable for everyone. They're in the business because they love what they do and want to share it with their customers. For two 12 inch pizzas with all those toppings it came out to roughly under $40. I thought I was getting a discount for being so handsome but apparently that's just the standard price. The decor isn't anything to write about but I don't go to a pizza place for the architecture or artwork. I go for the food. It's a very casual atmosphere and if you're into feeling like family at the places you eat this place is for you. Good vibes if you strike up conversation with these friendly and passionate owners and even better food. If you're a pizza person you should absolutely add this to your list of places to pig out at. Uncle Nick won't steer you wrong!

Yelp
We bought a large mozzarella with eggplant which looked and tasted great. I don't understand the harsh negative reviews. Maybe there was a different person cooking the pizza. Ours was very good and I'm sure we'll be ordering there again.

Yelp
Just had delivery. Customer service was excellent. Delivery was prompt. Salad very fresh. Small salad was huge. In house blue cheese dressing is great. Also ordered penne w meatballs n sausage. Generous portion. Eggplant parm sub was fabulous. Very generous w eggplant. My only gripe is that the sauce is bland.
google avatar

Katherine V.

Yelp
Pizza was delicious, chicken parm was also delicious! We ordered through the online ordering page and when we received our pizza we got a large 1/2 bacon. We had ordered a large white clam with 1/2 bacon. I called the restaurant and the guy on the phone apologized told me to keep the other pizza and the correct one would be there in 25 minutes. Absolutely delicious, I plan on really only ordering from here from now on! Highly suggest.

Jane C.

Yelp
I'm going to have to go middle of the road on this one. This place should only be open for takeout. The place is dingy and in disarray. You need to partially enter the kitchen to get to the bathroom - where a crudely handwritten sign awaits (I won't bother with what it says, but it's just odd) We ordered garlic knots. The guy apologized for the wait because he had to make fresh ones. Two of us just wanted cups of water. That wasn't available - only bottled. He'd have to go next door to get tap. The pizza is fine. Yes, that is the main focus and why we went. It was just an overall strange outing for pizza. I'll stick to takeout here.

JLou S.

Yelp
Not sure where we get 4 stars from bc this was awful. I have had frozen pizza barely heated that tastes better than this.

Rocco T.

Yelp
PROS: Pizza was very good. It is thin and cooked well. The workers were very friendly and engaging. CONS: The inside is dated and they only have foxon park sodas.

Yelp
My wife and I are huge pizza snobs. We heard nothing but great things about the newly opened Mangia Apizza, so we had to check it out. This location has been home to a number of different pizzerias over the years, but they never last more than a few years. Mangia Apizza is definitely here to stay! My wife went out to a local winery with some co-workers. They stopped at Mangia to get a pie to bring to the winery. They ordered a mashed potato pizza; half with bacon and half with no bacon. Mangia accidentally made the whole pie with bacon. They said, "We're very sorry. Give us 10 minutes. We'll make the pie that you originally wanted and you can have both pies for the price of one." They loved the pizza! I stopped by a couple of hours later to get take-out for myself. I ordered three smalls: the fresh tomato, the margherita, and the senor bunce (eggplant, ricotta and bacon). Holy cow!! These guys definitely know what they are doing! The sauce was perfect and the crust was super crisp. Not quite as good as Modern, Pepe's or Sally's, but definitely very close. This place may just become our new go-to for take-out pizza!
google avatar

Keith C.

Yelp
I've been to all the "major" pizzerias in the New Haven area (except Zuupardi's...hopefully soon!). I'll put Mangia head to head with any of them. Their prices are good and their pie is excellent. Just to refute another reviewer, you can see by the picture that their large is in fact a large. I've only been once, but I'll definitely be back for more!
google avatar

Mon S.

Yelp
Hands down, the best pizza in Connecticut. I've been to almost all of them, this is the real deal. Perfect crunchy dough, very generous toppings, baked just the way I like - golden not burnt! Sausage is so flavorful. I can't believe I used to spend hours in line for modern or pepes.. these guys are out of this world. I live about 45 min away, but already planning on going back.

Anthony L.

Yelp
Pizza is Very Good... Unfortunately their Subs leave much to be desired! Ordered a Chicken Cutlet and Meatball Sub today 9/18/2022. Chicken Cutlets were horribly overcooked and burned! Meatball tasted like uncooked Pizza Sauce was tossed on it and baked in the Oven! Please don't get careless Guys!

Jack L.

Yelp
Friend took me to this place and so glad he did. Some of the best pizza and grinders ever. Have to say I think this might be the best food in the area and even better than the famous pizza places in New haven. Will be back for sure

Matt G.

Yelp
As good as any other apizza joint in New Haven. Pizza was awesome. Exactly what you're looking for in a pizza, it checks every box. Highly recommend.
google avatar

rich K.

Yelp
The pizza chefs here have worked in the finest pizzerias on Wooster Street and all over New Haven and yes, they know how to make the best New Haven Style apizza. They have some great specials and stuffed breads. Come in and say hi to Steve and John. They want to meet you. You won't be dissapointed!
google avatar

Johnny U.

Yelp
Their pizza is not "all that". After reading 5 Star reviews I'm now figuring that those positive reviews are from friends and family. The pizza is average at best and the prices are an "illusion". A "large" at Mangia is 16 inches which is basically a medium at any other pizza joint (18 inches is a standard Large at most pizza restaurants). Regardless of if they show a "full box" photo. Aka, they make their pizza smaller yet charge a higher price. So, when you get your "large" know in advance that it will be a medium pizza. And you definitely paid for a LARGE, not a MEDIUM titled as large. If they pull s stunt like this in plain site, what else can you expect? The bar is set low if people think this place is actually good. Soaking wet greasy, small, over priced and the male owners play favors with not only their friends but (I hate to say it but witnessed it) good looking young women. The owners, men, are extreme flirts. Borderline perverted tendencies. It's not a good look at any business. Very Classless. Vulgar. Once more people notice what's going on, this place will become a ghost town and close down. Note: Again, to be clear, their "large" is 16 inches regardless if they use small boxes to show an appearance of a full box. A large pizza at any other location is 18 inches.

Michael Z.

Yelp
Definitely my fav pizza in North Haven. My go to place outside of New Haven. Very good guys that work there. Love the fried mozzarella in the Mozzerella in Carrozza style.

Vera T.

Yelp
Not much mangia for me. Ordered a large meat pizza that was scarce with the meat and hardly had any cheese and it was topped with sweet tomato sauce. They charged $25 which included a fee for using a credit card.

Lisa S.

Yelp
After reading so many great reviews, we tried Mangia Apizza last night. It was FANTASTIC & will be our new pizza place moving forward. I live in the Foxon area of East Haven (lived in North Haven 30+ years), and this pizza beats ANYWHERE in North Haven AND East Haven. The pizza tasted like it was from Wooster Street without the congestion, parking issues, etc of Wooster Street. The guys were incredibly friendly & thankful for our patronage. Highly recommended!

Patrick M.

Yelp
By far the best pizza with the best crust anywhere in the New Haven area! Better than the famous joints in New Haven. Johnny Mongillo is a skilled pizza craftsman. I went there today with the family, we ordered a Mangia Special and a Clams Casino. The crust was thin and perfectly cooked, the peppers were cooked perfectly, the sauce was fantastic and the bacon was crisp. The place just opened but John has over 20 years experience as a pizza artist. Both my wife and I highly recommend Mangia Apizza!

Chris G.

Yelp
Was getting takeout for my family for the first time, when we got home the order was incorrect So we called, and spoke with who he said , was the "owner". He was rude and irritant and told me to bring all the food back or I couldn't get any kinda credit , staff was cooking with barehands no masks..... mash potatoe pizza was good (no sauce) other pizzas with sauce were terrible. Sauce is super sweet, toppings weren't good. Bad look during a pandemic!

George M.

Yelp
Excellent!! Was looking for a place within 10 minutes and found it. Saves me the trip to Modern, Pepe's etc. New Haven without having to go to New Haven

Gauravi P.

Yelp
Growing up in New Haven, the epicenter of some of the best pizza in the world I didn't think I would come across a delicious pizza place just 5 minutes from my home in North Haven. While I am very close to the location, I highly encourage anyone in CT to make the drive to visit this pizzeria. I'm so glad that I found them on google on a random night. A mist

Brian M.

Yelp
The food here is amazing!! ... upon my first taste of Managua's food, I enjoyed a nice meal of the best Buffalo Chicken Tenders and Margarita Pizza I've ever had, especially that Margarita Pizza, it is truly to die for. Also, the owner, John, is a very friendly man, and treats every customer like they are family. His personality is unlike anyone I've ever met, I'd highly recommend!!!!!!

Matt R.

Yelp
This was some super solid pizza, competitive with anything else New Haven has to offer. Their quality is on par with pizza you get in Italy. The owners and staff are very friendly. We will definitely be back.

Peter B.

Yelp
The best. Tell them to HOIST it in the oven. Ask the owner for the "One Time for the Good Guys" Special.

Codruta L.

Yelp
My go to pizza place for takeout or delivery. The crust is thin but not dry and the toppings are delicious. My favorite is the mashed potato pizza with just the right ratio of bacon to mashed potato. Could definitely successfully rival some more well known pizza places. Highly recommend!

Liz C.

Yelp
Excited to try the pizza, all the pictures I see people posting make my mouth water. Also, their customer service is beyond expectations!

Ray R.

Yelp
Great pizza! Reminds me of the pizza I had growing up. Great owners and friendly staff.
