It was our silver wedding anniversary and we felt like Italian. Somewhere new to us. With a party of 6 folks, ages 14, 16, 21, 24, 51, and 55, we didn't know what to expect from Mangia Qui Bistro.
We arrived at 7pm. They weren't busy, maybe 1/4th capacity tops. So we got seated immediately. Ice water for everyone right away. Nice.
Our waiter said he would get bread started in the oven.
We started with the $14 large caprese salad. It took longer than expected to come out, but eventually did and it was good. This is when the waiter says again, he'll get warm bread started in the oven. Started? It had been 30 minutes and still no bread. He was keeping our drinks full, which was appreciated, but it should have been repeatedly visual reminders we were done with the caprese, still no bread, and we had been there a awhile already. Again, they weren't busy at all.
About 40+ minutes in, for a table of 6 guests, comes 1 little basket of bread, barely enough for each person to get one little wedge of bread. And only 1 condiment cup of butter, one. Half of us didn't get butter for our single wedge of bread. Pretty sad. But the bread was good, soft, warm, just a very very stingy portion, to be sure. We were actually amused at how sad it was.
Then about 10 minutes after that, about 50 minutes in, again they weren't busy at all, our orders arrived.
Now if you read my other reviews, you'll know I'm usually very frank in my wording, and am not picky. I like most places and you have to really blow it for me to say anything.
I got the sausage and peppers. I thought it was a mediocre sized portion, nothing to do a cartwheel over, but it was good. I thought the penne was weird because it's like 4" long each, but hey, it was good. Not great, but good enough. No complaints.
My wife got the tuna and shrimp pasta with lemon, capers, etc. She said it was bland and didn't have the real lemon taste she expected. She ate it all, but she didn't like it.
My oldest son and his girlfriend split an order of chicken parmesan. The gal said it was very underwhelming and bland, but my son says it was great and very flavorful.
The 16yo tried the Pasta Bolognese. She wanted to try something new, and it sounded good. Well she didn't like it at all. She ate all the pasta out of it and left most of the sauce and meat. I've never seen her do that, because she kinda likes everything. Not this time.
Lastly, the 14yo, who adores and loves chicken alfredo, and gets it anywhere we go, was extremely disappointed in his alfredo tonight. Not only was it a very mediocre portion, It had pease in the sauce, and he loathes peas. We all had never seen it heard of peas in chicken alfredo before. He did the best he could, ate half, didn't like it, have it to us. Now my wife and I thought it was GOOD. We wished we had ordered it.
All the portions were underwhelming for the prices. The single little loaf of bread and one thing of butter for a table of 6 adults was, well, unacceptable.
Oh, and we never offered grated parmesan. I think that's a first at an Italian restaurant. We didn't think about it until we were half way through our meals, but darn it, why no Parmesan?
Our waiter was rather aloof, seemed very distracted, but he did keep our drinks full. Parmesan and allot more bread would have meant the world, though...
Some of the food was good, some was really bland and dull. Our bill came to $143 before tip, and we left feeling hungry and very underwhelmed. I did, however, hear other customers saying how good their meals were. So it boils down to a matter of preference. For this particular party of 6, we will go elsewhere for Italian next time.
