18 Best Restaurants and Bars on Capitol Hill | Eater DC

"This family-owned Italian deli has acquired a serious local following for its meaty subs. Its most famous sandwich, the “G” Man, comes with ham, salami, mortadella, pepperoni, fontina cheese, provolone cheese, and oregano. Pickup wraps at 2:30 p.m. and delivery stops at 3 p.m." - Tierney Plumb

These Classic D.C. Restaurants and Bars Are Still Worth a Visit

"Since 1953, this Italian deli has been feeding Capitol Hill residents. And what do many of them order? The G Man — a sub that's packed with deli meats (the Big G is even more epic in size)." - Vinciane Ngomsi, Tierney Plumb, Eater Staff

This was by far the best sandwich Ive had in DC to date! Everything was so fresh and the bread was perfect. The potato salad was good and the brownie was an excellent end. We will be back!

Well I heard of Mangialardos & Sons Inc. A while ago through social media. My husband and I decided to stop by at this deli to order our subs before we started to walk around Washington DC. At first it was really hard to find parking, on top of that we saw some constructions going on around the area. After driving around we found parking, and we walked to Mangialardos. The place is really small but just big enough to order and go. I knew that I wanted the 'G Man Sub' this one is highly recommended among other customers and social media posts. My husband ordered the 'Roast Beef and Cheese' sandwich. In my opinion the service is average and the guy didn't seem to have much patience when asking questions. It was our first time there and we came from Virginia to try this place out. Since I lived in NYC for over a decade I was familiar with subs. I took some photos of the place though there's nothing interesting about the interior. A bunch of boxes of supplies in one corner, customers have to stand waiting for the orders. Not even a little bench to sit and wait, let alone eat. You pay the cashier briefly, zip in and zip out. I know it's old-school, family-owned Italian shop that has been in this location since 1953. In my opinion the sandwiches are average for the price. My husband didn't feel he got a value for what either of us paid; esp the roast beef sandwich is much too small and there's nothing on it besides a little cheese and a few peppers. My 'G Man' sub wasn't as tasty as it could be. Maybe for those customers around the area the sandwiches are good and better than nothing. But for someone who is familiar with authentic Italian and gourmet sandwiches from NYC, one will notice the difference with disappointment. It's not worth the trip and the hours are horrible from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm closing Saturday and Sunday.

Google
Awesome subs, as others have said, G Man is the way to go. Everything is fresh and thick cut for the meat and cheese. The fontina is a great cheese. Super fast, friendly, and good value. It’s often packed in here for good reason. Thank you!

Google
For under $20 you can get enough food for two meals (if you're a normal person who consumes 2k calories a day). So I find it a great deal. They're not the absolute best sandwiches in the world but they're pretty good and they're big. The guys that run the place are super super friendly and the old school aura gives good vibes.

Michael Pitsenberger

Google
Service and food quality are fire! The menu is simple—only about 5 to 8 items—but every sandwich is high-quality and reasonably priced. There are no gimmicks here; it’s exactly what it claims to be: a deli shop making great sandwiches. Part of me does wish they offered a few more items, like deli meats by the pound, fresh mozzarella, bread, olive oil, and other staples. It would be awesome to grab some essentials while picking up a sandwich. Still, for what it is, they’re absolutely nailing it.

Google
The G-Man is the sandwich to get. The only decision is soft or hard roll. I prefer soft so I don't have to fight my sandwich while I'm eating it. It's really the civilized choice. The owner hasn't changed in years. I'm glad they now accept cards. Best sandwich in DC.

Google
I’ve been coming here for 15 years and have Never Been disappointed. The staff is extremely friendly and the subs are absolutely delicious. My favorite is the Big G. I live in Las Vegas, NV now and absolutely nothing compares to these fresh, tasty, overstuffed sandwiches. I miss this place and make it a point to get there every time I return to DC. I wish the owner would open a store here in Vegas. He’d make A MINT!!! I’ve tried every sandwich on the menus and they are all delicious. Take your friends and family!

Google
The G-man, hard with everything and extra hots is one of my favorites, superior to other shops Order ahead or just walk in- it’s very efficient and quick Started going there since the early 80s picking up orders for USCG HQ staff, now it a stop every time I’m in DC. The food you can’t go wrong for lunch or pick from their Italian pantry to create your own . Easy to find, just look for the police and fire trucks vehicles double parked on PA Ave.

Yelp
I LOVE this mom & pop sub shop. I get the G Man sub, all toppings included on soft bread and sweet peppers. Always prepared fresh and quickly.

Yelp
4.1 stars I got the meatball and my friend got gman sub and we split half/half. I'm usually not into meatball subs but this one was pretty good. The bread was very soft, the sauce was flavorful but not overwhelming, the meatballs were made well. I put hot peppers and added good flavor, I think onions would be good too. The gman sub with everything on it tasted very fresh with a soft bun. The fontina cheese was amazing, gave a good sour kick to the sub. I would add extra fontina cheese next time. This place looks so unassuming from the outside but very nice and clean on the inside. The staff are very friendly and quick with the orders. The owner is so hospitable, willing to entertain you.

George S.

Yelp
Get the G-Man on a hard roll with all of the toppings! This is a great spot that we drive into DC to get lunch.

Yelp
Mangialardo has some of the best subs in DC. This is a staple. I haven't been here since the pandemic. My go to sub is the turkey and cheese on a soft roll. And baby it's fire. The price for the subs is great and you get a lot for your money. The service is always top tier. You can go right in order and be out before you get ticketed for being double parked . I ran in yesterday because I had went to work late and wanted a sub sooo bad. Was afraid I wasn't going to be able to make it but I did. It's always been clean here. The art work and the badges of fire departments, police stations and more is nice too. Check them out if you haven't.

Yelp
This review is based on a delivery from DoorDash. If it's this good delivered I can't imagine how it is fresh in store. This sandwich was exactly what I wanted, and is truly an authentic Italian deli sub. The ingredients were fresh and the bread was 10/10. I search for bread like this in grocery stores and bakeries and it is never as satisfying. I didn't have a chance to interact with the staff since I ordered through a third party, but I would definitely order from here again. I can't wait to visit in person soon too!
google avatar

Megha F.

Yelp
A top notch Italian sub!! The staff was so friendly, the wait was pretty quick/reasonable, and the entire place just feels like a Capitol Hill time capsule. There isn't a place to sit, so you'll have to take your sandwiches on the go, but this place is a true gem. The sandwiches could have used a touch more vinaigrette for my liking, but still an A+ sandwich!
google avatar

Yelp
I had this place bookmarked for years and finally got a chance to try it today. Man, was I underwhelmed! I ordered "the big g" and it was just not good. The meat looked like it was purchased from the refrigerated cold cuts section from Safeway a la Oscar Meyers pre-sliced meats. The soft roll was awful as was the choice to include fontina cheese. Also, instead of shredded lettuce, there was just a huge piece of iceberg. This sandwich literally tasted like one I could make at home-- the je ne sais quoi that makes a good Italian sub as delicious as it is was absolutely missing. Let down!
google avatar

Auggie L.

Yelp
Went for Lunch Food - 4/5. G Man could be described as a solid Italian sub. The bread is soft, the vegetables are crisp, and it's loaded with cold cuts. The main dressing is Italian herbs which add a nice aroma. For a sandwich with so much claim to fame as a signature local sandwich, it was unexemplary. It did not have much distinguishing features that separates it from other Italian subs. Service - 4/5. Fast and friendly. Value - 4/5. At the price of $11, the sandwich is good in flavor and size. However, it is average when it comes to uniqueness, and I did not feel the g man sandwich lived up to its hype. Solid subs, but not a necessary stop for a food tour of D.C. Parking - Street (Metered)

Yelp
Mangialardo's is a sub shop that has been serving the Capitol Hill area for around 60+ years. They offer both cold and hot subs, oven subs, and breakfast options (breakfast sammies, omelets). We had tried: +the Turkey & Cheese +Chicken Salad & Cheese +the Beef Combo - with corned beef, pastrami, roast beef, and provolone cheese You can customize your sammies with the following toppings: hot or mild peppers, mayo, oil & vinegar, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and/or mustard, on a choice of a hard or soft roll. We opted all of the orders to be on the soft roll, and aside from the Chicken Salad & Cheese, the other two sandwiches had the hot peppers, mayo, and extra onions. Unfortunately, the subs were a little less than mediocre; the bread was hard and stale, even though were 'soft rolls'; the chicken salad seemed to use prominently dark chicken meat. The Beef Combo should have been requested extra warm, as ours were served at a room temperature. We also noticed that some of the requested toppings were missed, so we had to go back up to the counter to request them. Could you imagine not checking and going back into your car/other transportation and finding out that you ended up with a wrong/inaccurately-made order? Portions are generous, but the taste and quality fell flat. It does get busy during the lunch rush, but orders were completed pretty efficiently; not sure if the rush affected the lack of quality control, though? I'm glad I was able to check this place out, but wouldn't return. +missing/inaccurately-made subs +hard, stale 'soft' rolls +online ordering available

Yelp
How have I not been to this place before? Search me. But it's on my radar screen now. Mangialardo's has excellent sammies. The "G Man" sub is dynamite. It's actually a classic Italian sub, just with a different name. I can't finish it in one sitting, so I get 2 meals out of it. Also, the turkey & cheese sub is a winner. This is a true throwback institution, steeped in the old ways. A mom & pop business that opened up in the 50's, in a rowhouse. The young man who took my order is a great grandson of the founders, so it's still being operated by the same family. Cops frequent here. I always follow the MPD when it comes to food; they know a good value. And clearly, Mangialardo's is a law enforcement supporter. An oversized bulletin board placed prominently on a side wall features law enforcement and first responders' badges from all over the US. Best new find for me in 2022.

Yelp
First time giving this place a shot, as I had no idea prior to today it is in the neighborhood. It is actually not real easy to notice on Pennsylvania Avenue unless you know is there from someone else mentioning or walking by. The sandwich I had was outstanding (the roast beef and cheese). I will definitely be back, as the employees were really nice along with the great tasting sandwich. A heads up for online orders, I was missing a sandwich from the order. I did check it before leaving and heading back home. They were super quick on making the missing sandwich while I waited and I did appreciate that.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! I ordered a sandwich for lunch and I am already planning out when I can go back. I'm usually a turkey and cheese kinda sub gal but I had to try their specialty and it was one of the best deli sandwiches that I've had in the DMV area. I got the G-Man sub on a soft roll with all the fixings (hot peppers, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, mayo, oil-vinegar). This sub has ham, salami, mortadella, pepperoni, fontina cheese, provolone cheese, oregano. The sub had the perfect ratio of meat and cheese. I ordered through work, so I haven't been to the storefront. Once I do visit, I can add more pictures!

Yelp
I go here when I an really hungry for a traditional well made Italian Sub! This place has lasted a long time for a reason. They treat customers, locals, tourists and regulars with cheer and great attitudes! Watching them build your sub is a sight to behold. They have a great system of making awesome subs without a whole lot of wait time. Hot or cold, it is worth the wait and the price!

Alex D.

Yelp
The G-Man on a hard roll is the move here. Good Italian cold cut sub that is a relatively good value. The portion is good size for lunch. Definitely would come back again.

Yelp
Super fresh, super fast, fantastic quality. Wonderful staff and owner. Very popular for the lunch crowd at the Hill. Consistently great food.

Yelp
A few years ago, when I, a guy from Philly, started spending most of my time in DC for work, every time I got an Uber driver from Philly, the driver would note that I probably missed being able to get good sandwiches on every block. They were correct. DC has its charms, but its sandwich game is weak. Most of them then told me that I should try Mangialardo. They were correct again. This is a proper freaking sandwich shop. It's not fancy, but executes on the fundamentals. In a world where defense wins championships and making the free throw counts, Mangialardo is a champ of a sandwich shop. It doesn't try to be fancy, but: Good sub rolls, and you can choose "soft" or "hard" ones. Great cold cuts. Great cheese. Fresh and flavorful lettuce, tomato, etc. This place is rightfully a DC icon, proving that the District can swing with the sandwich giants. I love it.
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
The bread to meat ratio on the sandwich is perfect. I loved the cold cuts. They used on the G-man. I found the bread to be a little stale. But, I will be back.
google avatar

Jerome W.

Yelp
Subs a point. Turkey and Ham on a soft roll with lettuce tomato mustard mild peppers with lite oil and vinegar is my go to choice.
google avatar

Georggetta H.

Yelp
This place never gets old ! Comfort, delicious , And consistent. I've ordered the same things for 10 years . A Gman on soft roll with LTO, cheese, hot Peppers, Mayo , Oregano. I love oil and vinegar but if You let sub sit too long it gets soggy. A side of UTZ Honey BBQ chips and I'm set. A family ran staple in DC. Traditional and delicious. And if you're in a rush you can now order online ahead of time instead waiting in line.
google avatar

Dan A.

Yelp
Not what I expected but In a good way. A small place (was expecting it to be bigger for some reason) that's doing take out only for now. Clearly a local's favorite and was steady busy at 2 on a Wednesday afternoon. Simple menu & it's all about the subs here. A good selection of hot and cold varieties with some sides (Potato Salad, etc). Ordered the famous G Man Sub. (Big G-double meat/cheese). Substantial as the Big G can feed at least two (definitely had leftovers). A great mix given the Mortadella and Fontina cheese which don't make it into most Italian Cold Cut versions. Tasty and balanced flavors on a fresh soft sub roll & one of the best Cold Cuts I've had. They don't do condiments on the side but will work with you if you want hots on only 1/2, etc. Staff was friendly and helpful. Now on the list of must stops when in DC! A Food Network favorite that lives up to the hype!
google avatar

Alice W.

Yelp
On a summer-like November rainy weekday morning... What could you ask more? A fresh Cold Cut Sub! You walk in like visiting an uncle and get welcomed. After friendly exchanges, you come out with a sub large enough for two meals. One bite takes you to happy childhood memories which don't make any sense as I grew up in Asia where was no Sandwich. No wonder law enforcement loves this place. It keeps your body and soul fulfilled.
google avatar

C.M. C.

Yelp
Delicious Italian subs. Great place to grab one, a bag of chips, and two drinks. Share it!

Destiny M.

Yelp
Best subs, always good service. My family loves this place, I'll always recommend it!

Pat O.

Yelp
The best hard roll sub in DC has got to be the G Man. My family has been eating them for well over 40 years. It's a family run carry out that has consistently made the same sandwich's for my family my whole entire life. If I'm in the neighborhood, I pick some up for everyone. It's a tradition my father started and I happily carry it on.
google avatar

Markesha E.

Yelp
When you know, you know! We have been coming here for years now! They have the BEST subs in the DMV! Small pub but the sandwiches are huge! 1 is Enough for lunch and dinner for me. Flavorful and delicious! Each bite is packed full of flavor. I get the G Man sub, I get mine regular with everything. I don't eat hot peppers so that's the only subtraction. My hubby always adds extra mayo on his. Great for all ages, with everything being fresh the onions don't overwhelm, my kids who hate onions will eat them on this sandwich. You can also get hot subs. I have never seen it empty, They close at 3pm daily, not open on the weekends. Listen. If you want a mouthful of greatness, this is the spot!
google avatar

John A.

Yelp
I'm from NY and this Deli far exceeded my expectations. If you're looking for a great sub, at a fair price, look no more, Mangialardos is your place. I got the G-Man, I'll get it again. Let me tell you a quick story. I paid for my sub, grabbed my bag from the counter, and began to walk to my car. It felt like there was a bowling ball in the bag. Yes. It's packed full of meat just the way a sub should be. If you're in the District, stop here for lunch.
google avatar

Carla B.

Yelp
They seriously have the best subs I've ever had. Not only are the subs great but the prices are affordable and the customer service was also. This place is usually packed when I go but they move pretty quickly. As most places in DC, I despise the parking because spots fill up quickly but that wouldn't stop me from visiting.
google avatar

Victoria B.

Yelp
This deli has a cult following, which includes me. This long running family deli has been around for decades and is only open during the week for breakfast (early lunch) and lunch. Peak time is 12-1:30 and is full of firemen and blue collar workers taking huge orders. That's always a good sign. This place is famous for the GMan sub, which is their signature Italian hoagie. Packed full of pork and cheese, this sub is definitely filling. Because you have to order an Italian with oil and vinegar, I always get it on the hard roll to soak up all the juices. The hard roll is really hard and I wouldn't get it with a sub that didn't have a lot of juice or sauce. I also love the tuna sub with cheese, it's literally overflowing with tuna. I can only eat half of a sub in one meal. The family who runs the place is very sweet, especially the dad. He makes you feel like a regular even during the first visit.
google avatar

David Z.

Yelp
Unreal sandwich! Lived up to all the hype and reviews. I've been looking for a go-to deli in DC and this deli shop is it. The ingredients are fresh, the sub roll (soft) is flavorful and easy on the bites, and the mixtures of meats with the provolone is complimentary in the sub. I ate the Big G and will definitely be going back for it again. Helpful staff and very clean spot and located in a neighborhood around Capitol Hill.
google avatar

Yelp
Mangialardo's is a DC classic because it serves up some of the best sandwiches in DC! I've been getting subs here for a couple decades now, and I've never had a bad experience. They're almost always busy at lunch time, but the wait is rarely long and it's not uncommon to have an interesting conversation or two with the other patrons. If you get there after the lunch rush, the owner, Tony, is more than willing to chat you up while you wait. Tony's family opened the shop in the 50's as an Italian grocery store, and you could still buy some Italian staples there as recently as the early 2000's, but it's just sandwiches these days. Tony is 40+ years in the store himself, and told me it's the only job he's ever had My go-to order is either the G-Man -- a traditional Italian cold cut sub -- on a with everything + hot & sweet peppers (upgrade to the Super G for double meat & cheese if you have an appetite) or the meatball & cheese w/ lettuce, tomato, mayo + hot & sweet peppers. Yeah, the hot & sweet peppers make the sandwiches even better! Your choice of hard or soft roll, but stick with the hard roll for the hot sandwiches; the soft roll can't hold up to the meatballs & tomato sauce. Parking can be a beast, so be willing to circle the block or park illegally. You can order ahead by phone or online, but then you miss the ambience of this hole-in-the-wall carryout place and the clientele.
google avatar

Brandon B.

Yelp
Mangialardo is a fantastic sandwich. Hard roll will break your teeth, soft roll hits just right. Either way, "G" man is a favorite--ask for warmed up in the oven and toasted bread. If you order online, skip the line when you pick up. I made the mistake of seeing the crowd (always a crowd) and waiting instinctually. Took me a solid five minutes to realize the crowd wasn't there for online pickup, but for sandwiches ordered there. Now, it's 1~ minute from door to sandwich in hand, no matter how crowded they are. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
I just had a cheese sandwich on a hard roll with all the fixin's. It was awesome. I could only eat half , and had a hard time finishing that!! It was huge!! Fresh ingredients, good bread. Highly recommend this place. I'm stopping by on my way out of town to get a sandwich to bring to my parents.

Timothy C.

Yelp
I have known the owner for years. I even sold his family a Jeep Cherokee. my dad was a metropolitan police ofricer and he used to go there and pick up a sub for .25c because the police department would no longer allow them to give subs to the officers for free . The owners are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. plus the subs are the best I have ever had. especially on a hard roll.

GinaMarie H.

Yelp
Rushed to get here with only three minutes to make a sandwich and they sure did my tummy right! FRESH and flavorful ! Everyone was super polite and didn't rush me to order! My ham and cheese couldn't wait, I sat out front in my car and enjoyed every bite! I will be back!!
google avatar

Yelp
incredible food!!!!!!!!! quality is superb!!!!!!!!!!!!! the penachio's from boston
google avatar

Shawn T.

Yelp
Great huge subs! Many people in line but it moves fast. There's a line because it's good! A DC gem.

Luke I.

Yelp
Not sure what the rave is about this place. It's your standard deli sandwiches you can find anywhere. Probably couldn't tell a difference between subway cold cuts and cold cuts used in this place!
google avatar

Becca D.

Yelp
If you're able to stop here during the week, you are in for a real treat! A favorite throughout the Hill East neighborhood, definitely the best local place for some delicious sammiches. It took me forever to finally stop here since they're only open during weekday lunches, but once I finally made it in, I now stop whenever I can if I have a weekday off. Mangialardo's is a no frills family-owned deli serving up some delicious, large, and cheap hoagies (I'm from Philly, we call them hoagies ok?). The all star sammich is the G Man which is a play on an Italian hoagie but SO MUCH BETTER! I always get the G with everything on it, hot peppers of course, and a super soft roll. Service is always speedy and pleasant, the workers always put a smile on my face. This place is definitely a must stop if you have the chance!
google avatar

Buster C.

Yelp
Been going here for a long time. Things have changed over time. Some kind of micromanaging going on, don't see to many of the original people. Still a good sub although kind of bready these days. Service is generally good. We still come here occasionally because we be old and feel an allegiance to the place. The subs still taste good most of the time.
google avatar

Hwal L.

Yelp
Their G-man sub would/should have been amazing, but the impossibly hard and dry roll (and the fact that it was served at all) absolutely spoiled the experience and brings down the rating, unfortunately. We'd been hoping to try their sub for almost 3 months when we finally stopped here on a recent trip to DC, and there was no question what to order: the G-man!! We asked the staff about the hard and soft rolls they have, as were assured that the hard roll they have is a chewy and tasty kind, not the hard and bone-dry kind. We got it for takeaway and settled down at a nearby table. The bread was so dry and stale that my half of the sub split open before I even took a bite, and it went downhill from there. I ended up with a sore jaw and an impression that it could actually be quite good on a different roll. The fact that the sub itself was so dry with apparently very little oil or dressing certainly didn't help. Will there be a next time? I hope so, but I'm in no rush.
google avatar

Leroy W.

Yelp
Born and raised in DC, this place makes great subs. It's a landmark of great proportions and you must try!

Christopher H.

Yelp
Crushes every time. Meatball. G Man. Can't go wrong. My only change would be to allow delivery of brownies online instead of just in the store.

Grace H.

Yelp
They have a fantastic macaroni salad! Subs are huge & have lots of meat and the folks that work here clearly love their job. A great grab & go atmosphere.
google avatar

Carolyn M.

Yelp
I am new to the DC area and was looking for a sub sandwich that would remind me of my beloved Philly hoagie and I must say the G-man sub comes pretty darn close‼ I ordered online after seeing some reviews, and I was anxious to see what the taste would be. When I walked into the establishment it smelled like a hoagie shop and reminded me of Philly. The staff was super friendly. I will definitely be back and will bring friends‼
google avatar

Diane M.

Yelp
Just finish eating the most wonderful tuna sub here and my husband had the turkey sub! The place was packed and now I know why this family owned business does so well!! It's nothing fancy but the freshness of the onions, lettuce, tomatoes, mild peppers , hot peppers and vinegar and oil will leave you wanting for more. We sat in our car in front of the place and chowed down. In fact, my husband went back in for a second one for later.

Mikka C.

Yelp
Very tasty sandwich (turkey and cheese sub on soft roll with lettuce tomato onion and peperoncini). Big enough for two servings. Friendly staff. Easy online ordering. Wish they were open more hours but if you can catch them while open it's worth a visit.

Charlie P.

Yelp
Best Subs in the city!!!! G-Man soft roll sweet peppers please!!!!!! Customer service is a 10. The guy at the register is great!!!!

Terry J.

Yelp
Best subs in DC.too bad they are not open on weekends. The G man is my go to sandwich. You can tell by pulling up to the establishment and seeing police, fire and DC government cars parked out front that it's a favorite among many.

Steven G.

Yelp
Some of the best subs in DC. Fresh and delicious, friendly service. Calling ahead helps.
