Manhattan Bread & Bagel Review - Manhattan Beach - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Manhattan Bread & Bagel has been a South Bay staple since 1992, and it’s easy to see why. They have shelves lined with pies, breads, and muffins, all of which are entirely deserving of your attention. But focus on the bagels. Texturally, they’re superb - each one is covered in tiny bubbles from a quick boil at high heat, and inside, they strike the perfect balance between light and dense. Toppings are a la carte - we usually go for a sesame seed bagel, topped with whipped cream cheese, avocado, and tomato." - Brett Keating

My wife had a blood test this morning, so she was hungry! She suggested this place and we couldn't have timed it better. Arrived around 9:45 am, and there was no line. 10 minutes later, it was out the door the entire time we dined in. The cashier could see the "deer in the headlights" look I had and helped with my choice. He saved me about $5 by recommending the bagel 🥯 with egg 🥚 and cheese 🧀 and the option to add your own protein. Excellent choice! My wife was hungrier so she ordered the chicken 🐔 salad 🥗 sandwich 🥪 lunch plate (comes with a side of pasta salad and tomato slices). Both were very good. Open seating inside and outside on the front patio. Free refills on fountain drinks and a single co-ed bathroom. Definitely worked for us. Hope you can find your favorite choice and time the line correctly and...enjoy!!!

Google
The bagel sandwich was decent, but the egg portion was much smaller than expected for the price. The flavors were good, but the sandwich felt a bit lacking due to the minimal amount of egg. It could be better with a more generous portion.

Google
Go-to-place for a bagel and coffee for brunch when staying in the area. Ingredients are fresh and the atmosphere is lively. The mini sandwiches are pretty decent sized and are a great option for a quick meal under 10 bucks.

Google
First time here. I had the egg bagel with cream cheese. It was delicious! The bagel was perfectly warm and it was fluffy. The cream cheese was a nice add-on. The customer service was great and the bagel was made right away. Give them a try if you haven’t already.

Google
Great bagels but do not rely on ordering ahead to assure that you receive what you want. Popular items run out and you don't get them in your order even if ordered days ahead. Staff doesn't seem to care.

Google
Picked up an egg on croissant around 10 am on a Friday. The line to order wasn't too long but there was about a 15 minute wait to get the food. It was very delicious and totally worth it though. Would love to try more of their bread goods!

Google
Very disappointed in this place. Third time I've stopped at various hours and they are out of bagels, and most bread products. If you choose to be open during both morning and afternoon hours, then you need to be producing and managing enough food product offerings to have available ALL of the hours you are open; not every potential customer can make it in the first few hours after you open.Would not recommended.

Phenomenal NY Style Bagels. The Garlic and Poppy were just perfect. The great crust on the outside protects the soft, chewy center. The 2nd picture is of the lox and cream cheese. The salmon was the best we've had on this one-month road trip around Southern California. What gave this five stars was that the general manager, maybe the owner, was working the register on this busy Sunday. It seemed that he had less than an entire staff today, given the long lines. I saw him run around and do everything, even empty the trash bins as they were filling up. This place was mobbed! Bonus, they do fresh bread every day, see picture, so they are more than a bagel shop.

Yelp
Short: Great bagel and sandwhich shop that features a large menu of different options. All baked goods are extremely tasty! Long: Manhattan Bread & Bagel has a large menu that has a ton of different options! Both the sandwhich and bagel were great and very tasty. The smoked salmon was fresh and had a lot of flavor. Both the bread on the sandwhich and the bagel were crunchy but also soft on the inside. So far one of the better bagels I have had in LA! Service was a bit slow and they ran out of multiple items so our order had to be adjusted. FYI this restaurant does get extremely busy on weekends. Overall a great bagel / sandwhich option however be wary of the long lines on weekends / selling out of certain items.

Yelp
I'm hoping to be able to go back and then leave a better review, but right now I'm just baffled! What has happened to this place? In the past, the seating area was bright and clean, today it was disgusting. Plates, straw wrappers, and crumbs littered a few of the tables and the floor was so dirty. Where once you would put in your online order and then, at the allotted time you could find it ready to go, the last few times it's not been ready, and today it wasn't even started. So about today: I placed an online order for two sandwiches at 2:35pm (not the height of lunch time rush). I was given a 2:49 pm pick up time - fair enough. At 2:55 pm I asked if my order was ready and was met with "What's your name??" I told them my name and they yelled back "what? Andrea?!" No. I repeated my name and they said, "oh, yeah, we're making it now." Now? So in the waiting time I was able to see that the seating area was dirty, and there were plenty of people standing around the counter to do something about it but weren't inclined to. My daughter and I were seeing to our drinks when my order was ready. Instead of handing it to me or calling my name, they just left the bag by the register furthest from where I was. So another few minutes passed before I realized it was there. Instead of stapling the bag closed with my receipt as they have done in the past, the bag was standing open with gobs of cream cheese stuck to it. What!? I finally got home and had my sandwich- the turkey and bacon - it had been slapped together with 4x the amount of onion any sandwich needs and was oozing mayo out all the sides. I'm really disappointed. I've been coming to this place since my kids were little. The employees were familiar and kind and the food was tasty, fresh and on time. A lot seems to have changed and, sadly, not for the better. It was really a one-star experience today, but the extra star is for the past good visits and hopes for better ones in the future.

Yelp
First Time today, May 25/ 2024. Ordered a breakfast bagel and paid. After 30 minutes one of the cashiers asked are you waiting for something I said yes. They looked away then stared cash register and I said "is that it?" "Well it's my first time here and last time" this place is no good. P.S. I gave the cashier a $1 tip too. No Good stay away

Yelp
I've had a bunch of their baked goods, most of them are decent. Almond croissant - this is one of my favorites. Sometimes it's a little over baked though and dry, but mostly it's pretty good Chocolate croissant - good Cookies - when they're baked perfectly, they're delicious. Sometimes though they are over baked and then they become a little bit hard/dry Danish - good

Yelp
Slow service. Average huge doughy bagels. Not a fan. lox cream cheese was ok but not great. Ok in a pinch but there are much better bagels out there
google avatar

Yelp
Was a short stop, got some chocolate chip cookies in a cup while also visiting the stores next to it. Looks like this place can be freshen up and tidier looking.

Yelp
Came in to get some bagels with a friend. Inside is bright. Decent amount of seating. There's also a small patio area with a few tables in front. I got the herb and spice cream cheese on an onion bagel. It was really good. My friend got the lox bagel and it was tasty. Small parking lot in front. Service is kind of slow though and staff isn't all that friendly. We waited a while for our order then my friend went up to ask and they said they gave it to someone else. Didn't seem apologetic about it and seemed more annoyed to have to make it again. Overall good bagels but service is lacking. Probably better as a to-go option.

Yelp
The bagels here are the reason i come here. rye bagels are my favorite thing to eat in the morning and most places either dont make them or they arent good. The mornings on the weekend you can expect to wait a good amount of time. weekdays and non holidays usually it isnt too long of a wait. they also have an way to order online to save some time. Lots of parking spaces which is a good thing. the employees are very friendly and fast. overall if you are in a rush order online and pick it up, otherwise just sit and relax and have some bagels! The bread they make is also really good, especially the black pepper and parmesan bread.

Yelp
Delicious bagels, breads, pastries, sandwiches, salads, etc. . I try to get in every time I pass the area. Really a treat. Slightly pricey, but these days maybe not!
google avatar

Chanson H.

Yelp
Similar experience with many other reviewers. Service is consistently slow. There may be one or two people in line, but the line still takes a long time. Not sure if the orders are overly complicated or what, but this happens every time. Tables are dirty as others have mentioned because it doesn't look like they have anyone working the front to clean up periodically. Trash cans can be full as well. I come here for the lox bagel, and it is what keeps me coming back. It is a well sized portion with lox on both halves of the bagel, loaded with cream cheese, tomatoes, capers, and onions. Yummy. I'll try ordering online next time to see how that goes.

Yelp
This place is awesome. The freshest bagels, made in front of you. (If you look closely behind the cashier, there is a vast of boiling water) The prices are decent. Great selection of bagels and sandwiches. I was there for a week on business. I rarely eat bagels. Lots of carbs in the morning. My coworker and I went there EVERY morning before work. We would grab a breakfast sandwich, coffee and sit outside enjoying our hearty breakfast. The staff is very friendly. They offer free coffee refills, which I did not know until I came up to the cashier to buy my boss coffee to go. They offered free refill. It's a laid back atmosphere. Lots of room to sit. Free parking out front. I highly recommend! I will be back in LA next month and plan on going everyday. Hope to see you there!

Yelp
Manhattan bread and bagel always seems to have a line out the door. The first time I visited I waited in that long line but now I know better and order ahead to avoid the wait. The regular drip coffee is not expensive and you get free refills. I usually get a medium vanilla roast and add half and half. The bagels are wonderful and chewy, I recommend having them fresh and not toasted to get the full experience. They have so many cream cheese flavors but my favorite is the chive cream cheese. They usually really load up your bagel with the cream cheese so you could share the cream from one bagel with another if you do not need huge amounts. There are lots of bakery items and one of these days I need to try their cup of chocolate chip cookies that I always see. Overall this is a delicious bagel spot.

Yelp
First off the food here is already amazing. I always order the egg on a bagel and it's divine. But today I placed my usual order through door dash and they accidentally sent me the wrong bagel, (sausage instead of bacon). I called to ask how they can help and someone from the restaurant hand delivered me a new bagel sandwich. 10/10 food 10/10 customerservice

Yelp
Was ignored for several minutes while employees were chatting with one another. The cashier walked away from me as I was waiting to place my order to help a man at the other register which was marked closed. Not like I wasn't ready to order. I left. Not going back.
google avatar

Natasha F.

Yelp
Nice brunch place right across from our hotel. Food is decent. My kids had the crème brûlée French toast which was really huge. I had a BLT which was decent. Fruit was a bit mushy and past salad wasn't great but u def get a lot for the price.
google avatar

Leilani A.

Yelp
The fresh baked whole wheat loaf of bread was so yummy. My daughter had the lox bagel sandwich and said it was very good. The container of little chocolate chip cookies was good too. The only item I bought but didn't care for was the canoli. It was tiny and scorched. I also would have liked to be able to see the breakfast menu from where the line was.
google avatar

Mona g.

Yelp
Bagel breakfast sandwich with a variety of options as well as salads and pastries. Although it was super busy when I came in, the tables were dirty and crumbs on the ground attracted pigeons which I think is not sanitary. And then I waited longer than 20 min for my sandwhich. Also, had I known cream cheese wasn't automatically put on I would have requested but it was never an option for me by the sales person. So not only was I nearly late for work but my bagel sandwich was mid and dry!
google avatar

Nicole P.

Yelp
I try to make an online order when I can because the line/wait can be long. But the atmosphere is pretty chill so it's not too bad, I just cannot stand for a long time without getting fidgety and old people pain. I always grab a cream cheese and a couple bagels for the next day. Lox cream cheese is a game changer.

Yelp
This was my first time ever coming here, an impromptu choice and surprised by how good their customer service and thought the food was satisfying! They made some innocent mistake so I think to rectify their mistake they gave us a full size sandwich n gave my kid couple of cookies on the house. Very nice customer service. They were very busy when we came in so I think there was just a little misunderstood... Food order: * Order a tuna sandwich on sourdough bread and a cup of chili (chili was great, very flavorful. Usually not a fan of chili, but, I would definitely go back for their chili.) * turkey sandwich and chicken soup *blueberry bagel w/strawberry cream cheese. Their portions are generous, usually you don't get that much cheese cream and they generously lather it. And a full size sandwich and lots of inside fillings- Tuna salad. Ambiance is clean and pleasant. Overall, nice surprise to stop by, definitely would go back. Only Con- wish it was closer to PV...

Yelp
Picked up some sourdough and chocolate chip cookies for the fam. I came here to get a little work done. After ordering my Egg Bagel sandwich along with some coffee, I settled and started working the WiFi is fine here but I did have to keep re-joining. My Egg bagel was decent and reasonably priced considering prices these days. But I would have to say the coffee was bland and not strong enough for me. I say this because I had my second cup at another location and the coffee was great. Parking in the strip lot but it does fill up quickly.

Yelp
We were having some Car work across the way and the mechanic had suggested this place. We had gotten there at the right time before the morning rush. Unfortunately the toasters for the Bagels were down but that did not deter us. We had ordered a Egg and Bacon Everything Bagel with cheese. I had ordered the Jalapeno Bagel with cream cheese. They had a lot of Baked goods and cookies and sweets. I had wound up buying a Gift basket with cookies and brownies. It was a Valentine's style basket with a lot of cookies. I had also got a Latte and a drip coffee. People were friendly here and we were able to get our breakfast rather quickly. The bagels were good but a bummer the toaster was not working. Definitely worth a stop for a quick Breakfast or Bagels on way to work or the Beach.
google avatar

Alec P.

Yelp
TLDR: Delicious bagels, awful service. If you're planning on a quick stop, think again. As good as the bagels are, the service is bad. We consistently are waiting 20-30 minutes for a bagel sandwich, even if there's not a long line. The general vibe of employees there is indifference. There's no sense of urgency or care, however, they may be somewhat kind. An extremely passive, sometimes actively slow service standard hurts this place more & more every day.
google avatar

Matt P.

Yelp
Have been coming here for years with diminishing returns. Today was the last time. The bagels were wet, the texture was par-baked, and came to us steamy (damp) and flat. There was also a constant high-pitched squeal of metal on metal, and the phone rang constantly.
google avatar

Chris O.

Yelp
Food was amazing! I will be ordering again soon! Can't wait for the meal...
google avatar

Yelp
If you have a tip jar at your checkout counter, and you notice customers fail to put money in it, their reasons may be one-or-more of the following: (a) They didn't get a THANK YOU response often enough when they tipped in the past. (b) They don't appreciate being manipulated by the practice of 'seeding' the tip jar with cash to guilt customers into giving more ("Don't you want to be like other generous souls before you?"). (c) Tipping is a tool management uses to justify paying their staff lower wages. (d) They want the businesses they patronize to be fans of the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid). (e) They're in (or headed for) dire economic circumstances. i.e., poverty (f) One alternative = abolish tip jars/tipping, and put up a placard reading "We have NO tip jar: our employees earn (or don't) bonuses every 4 weeks based on a formula involving changes in our net revenue and foot-traffic (how often you & your friends come in + the quantity/value of stuff you buy)."

Yelp
Manhattan Bread & Bagel is a great spot for delicious, freshly made bagels and coffee. The Works bagel (toasted) with a cappuccino is my favorite. I have never had issues with service. This is more of a grab and go cafe so the casual vibe of this spot makes sense to me. Customers oftentimes leave their trash on the tables which is bothersome to other customers and the restaurant team alike. Nonetheless, I love coming here. It has become my go to spot for coffee and bagels.
google avatar

Valissa T.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our bagel! Great customer service and so many breakfast options. We order for pickup and it was ready to go.
google avatar

Christina K.

Yelp
Average bagels. One time I ordered bacon egg and cheese on a bagel and was expecting the ingredients to be all separated stacked on top of each other but instead it was all chopped up scrambled with the egg. They should ask how the customer wants it first. Also, they take forever to make an order. I ordered a plan bagel with cream cheese (not toasted) and it took 5 minutes for them to realize they forgot. Two ppl before got theirs before mine. Currently, the line starts right when you walk in so when the line gets long (because service is at a snails pace) it creates bit of a traffic. They should reposition where the line begins to avoid collisions and make a better flow inside.
google avatar

pam yelp e.

Yelp
The Good: hub says the bagels are authentic. Yogurt parfait: fresh crispy granola on top Seating: clean and nice outdoor area too. Bad: service a bit slow The ugly: THE ORANGE JUICE IS NOT FRESH & ITS BITTER!!!! Last time I was here it was fresh and so good. Pity. ICK.
google avatar

Paulette D.

Yelp
Love love love this place! I got the Atlantic smoked salmon sandwich with avocado. It was so good. The caper wasn't overpowering and that's usually the issue I have with this type of sandwich, but this was one was perfect. I'm also not a huge fan of too much cream cheese and I feel like this was a perfect amount. The BBQ salad is probably one of the best salads I've had. The BBQ salad dressing is to die for! I dont know what's in it, but it's heaven. All the ingredients were super fresh and the chicken was seasoned well.
google avatar

Dream C.

Yelp
I've only been here three times and every time I ordered something happened where either they didn't call my name or forgot my ticket and my food was cold. Minus two stars because of those bad experiences. And three out of three times is crazy
google avatar

Eva K.

Yelp
Three stars for decent bagels and a comfortable dining room. But man... WTF is with the service now? I don't know if this place is under new management, but it's a disaster. They have three cash tills. Only one is staffed. And it's staffed by the slowest, most detached employee ever. On a Sunday afternoon... I imagine one of the busiest times. If the owner is reading this... you need to be here and run this place in person. I think that you used to. The cooks and prep staff are great. But your logistics for ordering are killing the place. I saw three customers walk off the line, and people are pretty patient in this area.

Debbie P.

Yelp
Always thought this bakery was terrific. Stopped in for a muffin this morning and was shocked at how dry and tasteless it was, I hope this was a one of, and not an indication of an unfortunate change in quality.

Janine S.

Yelp
Don't bother to order ahead. We were having brunch for Mother's Day. I placed (and paid in full) the order 2 weeks ahead of time. I showed up a few minutes early and gave my name. The guy came out with a bag and the list with a bunch that were struck out in yellow. Somehow they had run out of most of the bagels I had ordered and the cream cheese. This was 10:15 am. The guy behind the counter offered no apology or reason, other than they ran out. He said you can pick other bagels to fill. The bagels that were available were the ones nobody wanted. I wasn't even offered a refund or discount for the missing bagels. This company has been around for years. I don't see how if this is how they treat their customers.
google avatar

Xia P.

Yelp
I've been coming here since this place opened in the 90s and things have only gotten better over time. I absolutely love everything here and it's wonderful to see how large the menu has gotten over the years. There is pure love and magic baked into this bread & bagels. I fiend for their egg salad more than I care to admit but truthfully, anything you order here will be good. The line does get long and it can be loud af because of the concrete inside but grab a bite to go and sit by the beach and enjoy a delicious handcrafted meal.
google avatar

Stacy L.

Yelp
Waited for a while at the sign where it says to wait for cashier to call. The place is empty - about an hour before posted close time and no one will help me. It's a shame, the food looked really good
google avatar

Sterling C.

Yelp
The food was good, the place was clean, and we were treated nicely. i think this place is a good type of busy. the type that makes you think "i gotta try that place sometime" as you drive past it on the way to work in the daily rat race we call life. I tried it, finally, and i'm glad i did.
google avatar

Wingfut R.

Yelp
My firm decided to order so I once again ordered my usual "Lox, cream cheese and tomato only on an UNTOASTED Egg & Onion bagel." Per usual they got it wrong. No tomato. Don't understand why they can't get it right. Sometimes they toast it, sometimes they forget the tomato, sometimes they add onion or capers . . . . . For what they charge you should be able to get what you order, not something that is consistently wrong. This has been going on for years. It is the reason I seldom if ever go there!!!!!

Miles F.

Yelp
If you are looking for good bagels or food, go elsewhere. The service is incredibly slow, with lines barely moving at times and you wonder how long it takes to make a bagel with cream cheese. The bagels, bread and overall food used to be good here but have fallen significantly in quality, where the dough is sometimes undercooked and the bagels are flat. For the price you pay, you should expect way higher quality, timeliness and service attitude. You are treated like a chore and it looks like even the staff are overworked. Go to Tommy and Atticus's for bagels - which are so much better and the service is top notch. Or even Noah's bagels, as that is what this place competes with now - which is a tarnish to the original brand of Manhattan Beach Bread and Bagel. And one last note, the bathrooms are not sanitary and need to be cleaned way more often. This will be the last time I go to this store.

Deb G.

Yelp
Scones were great. Onion bagels are average. Nice selection of sweets. The chicken Caesar salad was better than expected with a large potion and decent price. Nice spot.

Burak A.

Yelp
This place became a joke. Worst customer service ever and the workers act like they are doing you a favor... Unreal
google avatar

Tracey S.

Yelp
great bagels. service is terrible. the staff does not have any sense of urgency in spite of the dozens of people waiting for their long overdue orders.
google avatar

Betty Y.

Yelp
Just had a morning kids birthday party and we catered from here for the breakfast. We ordered bagels, lox, cream cheese and coffee boxes. I asked for the items to be ready at 7:30 and when I arrived, everything was ready and waiting. So great! It was really nicely packaged and ready to serve. The parents all loved the lox and enjoyed a nice breakfast after enduring another kids bday party.
google avatar

Lou C.

Yelp
Went again to this place and noticed the guy preparing the bagels is high AF on the sweet leaf and of course my to go order was all wrong. This place just does not care.
google avatar

Denice D.

Yelp
Had a great Turkey n Gouda sandwich ! My husband Jae introduced me to this spot we have passed by many times. They have a back entrance with tons of parking space. They have deli sides and baked goodies. Come try them out
google avatar

ruth c.

Yelp
This place used to be my favorite place to stop and grab a coffee and a double toasted bagel egg sandwich with bacon..lol..I always ask for WW Works bagels too.. This time they got the bagel right but my double toast was BURNED! Only on one side? lol Unbelievable that the service the wait and now the end product is so gross now and no longer worth the time and money to go out of my way to give this place my $$ or business! ITS a shame cuz I love their chicken salad and so many other things..but seriously? Just doesn't seem like the benefit doesn't outweigh the cost of the trip nor the food .
google avatar

Yelp
I'm a first timer, but was brought here by a regular who swears by their great sandwich , honestly it was pretty good! Had the vegetarian but added chicken, it had fried eggplant and sun dried tomatoes and peppers and other good stuff. It was moth watering, fresh and flavorful. The bread is so fresh but I with it was a little thicker so it can soak all the dressing from the ingredients. It kinda fell apart a little. Still very good. There's indoor seating but I noticed that most people take it to go, I'd be down to try another sandwich there and buy some fresh baked goods & bread.

H E.

Yelp
This is my $12.00 turkey and havarti sandwich. One slice of turkey and one slice of cheese! This place has always had questionable service but now the food matches the service. It's embarrassing.
google avatar

Stephen H.

Yelp
People that run this place have a demonstrated lack of respect for the neighborhood they are located in. Speeding, running stop signs and littering, all witnessed while pulling in for work the after hours shift. Combine that with packaging materials found in the food twice now and they are sending a loud and clear signal
