The 36 Best Restaurants in Des Moines, Iowa | Eater

"Every day around noon, the Hansen family’s deli overflows just like its hoagies. Some of the sandwich combos at the locally owned shop might sound strange, but put your faith in the sandwich artists behind the counter. Try the Blue Bird: slices of blueberry bread stuffed with cream cheese, deli turkey, green pepper, lettuce, Swiss cheese, mustard, coleslaw, and mayo. For warm Italian subs, New York-style stacks, and kid-pleasing burgers, this is a timeless local lunch favorite." - Karla Walsh

Google
As close to a real NY deli as you can anywhere here in the Midwest. Have been going here for many many years and never once had bad sandwich. It's kind of small for seating but that is one of its best characteristics. Keep it up!!!

Jonathan Shah

Google
I feel like I'm being transported to the 90s and in an episode of Seinfeld. Aside from that, best sandwich shop in Des Moines. Only had hot sandwiches but man are they good.

Jean Baker

Google
GREAT food! I always get the special on Thursday, which is a grinder. Austin is a long time employee who knows exactly how I want the sandwich and will often start to make it before I even get to the register to order. I love the atmosphere – it’s not fancy, and it’s just the way I like it.

Adisa S.

Google
I ordered a turkey sandwich for lunch and did not have a good experience. The lettuce was wilted and the bread was very soggy. I only took a few bites before I had to throw it out due to the soggy texture. I would not recommend their regular sandwiches, maybe the hoagies taste better. Wish I could get my money back but they don’t answer their phone.

Google
Manhattan Deli is a staple of the Des Moines area so I was glad to see nothing has changed since my last visit. They’re still slinging some of their classics like the Wise Guy and the Vito but have had some new arrivals that all sound delicious. I decided to give a new arrival a try, and since I am a sucker for all things Pastrami I went with the Classic New York Pastrami which is piled high on marbled rye. It was delicious and a great portion size for the price. By far the best sandwich shop in the Des Moines area so be sure to stop by!

Carlise Carr

Google
Fantastic sandwiches and the brownie was yummy too. Loved our experience and impressed with the quality. Stacked mile high sandwiches that tastes delicious. Honestly prefer Palmers reuben but the pastrami and Swiss here is amazing. The service was good. No complaints about cleanliness or speed of service. Great job!

Google
This place has had my heart at first bite! This is hands down absolutely THE best sandwich shop around! I find myself craving a Mama Mia quite often! (Sandwich pictured) the hot peppers, cream cheese and roast beef just hit the spot every time! I love supporting this local business!

Google
Some of the best deli sandwiches I've ever had. The Manhattan was only $9.99 and it was nice, warm and cheesey. The service was great - super friendly, informative and fast. Plenty of places to sit as well. This is the place to go for deli sandwiches in Des Moines. Just make sure that you read the menu closely and know exactly what you're ordering. Highly recommend!

Yelp
First time in this deli and safe to say I will be back! I love a good local sandwich shop! I came on a weekday and it wasn't super crowded but a handful of people were sitting and eating. I'm actually obsessed with the ambiance here. The mural outside is so cute! They do have parking in the back but I just parked on the street. I ordered the Times Square and it was so good. If you like coleslaw and thousands island dressing, I highly recommend! They have great special deals and an accurate menu from their website and in shop! Service was super friendly. I ordered a cold sandwich and they got my sandwich done in under 5 minutes! Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I haven't been here since the Hansens purchased it. I was so excited to go. The place was packed. Luckily, we found a place to sit. Our sandwiches were just as big as I remembered. My dining companion ordered the potato soup. He said it was really good. I can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Mary P.

Yelp
Stopped around lunchtime & it was a busy place. We parked along a side street. The line move quickly. We both had the grinder special & I had it was drink & chips. Very reasonably priced! It was tasty but not quite hot enough. Friend said her temperature was lacking as well. We'll be back to try other yummy looking sandwiches!

Kristi. H.

Yelp
Had a to go order - cheesy potato soup and The Popper sandwich. . Everything was perfect. Love this place. Highly recommend!

Yelp
So I LOVE sub shops. I seek them out on my travels. The reviews fur Hansen's were mixed meaning more positive. I went anyway. Thoughts: 1. Most subs are premade. 2. They merely warm them if warranted, but the base is still cold since they are premade. 3. There is no array of add-ons. 4. They have an Italian salsa. I asked if it was a relish type sauce. No, it is salsa with basil instead of cilantro. 5. Most Italians on the menu include Italian beef ( a Chicago) staple. 6. I don't like how the cold salads are presented in the case. Doesn't give the "made in the restaurant" vibe. My sub (Little Italy) was good, it was just odd. There is a terrific foundation here, I wish they'd capitalize on it. Again, it was tasty, but odd.

Emma K.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite spots to eat. Affordable, delicious, and a quick meal if needed. The Friday special is my go to but I recently tried the Manmia Mia and I think I have a new fav! Get a warm Italian sandwich--they are the best.
google avatar

MaryAnn S.

Yelp
If you are looking for a sandwich that has your choice of a variety of cheeses, breads, meats and additional tasty condiments this place would put you in a sandwich coma full of flavorful deliciousness. The Reuben is perfection. The Little Italy is smacking good and The Hoagie #4 will sashay through the tunnels of your tummy making you want more. Let's not forget the homemade desserts from the brownies to mouth watering cookies that are so tasty. The best part is -- that it is family owned with delightful customer service with a warm neighborhood vibe.
google avatar

Veronica K.

Yelp
My husband and went here for lunch and it was awesome! There were so many sandwiches that sounded good that it was hard to decide what to get. We split a Little Italy sandwich because we weren't super hungry and it was so delicious. The sandwich was big and filling. The pastrami was very tender and lean and really high quality. All of the condiments and seasonings were perfect. I think this is one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten in my life. It's probably my new favorite. I want to come back and try all of their warm Italian subs. The last time I was here was when it was still Hagar's Manhattan Deli. It was great back then, but I feel like it's even better now. Maybe it's my imagination but it seems like they have more sandwiches on their menu now than they did back then. I'm so happy that we have a great sandwich place like this in town. It has that old school deli vibe. The wait to order and receive our food was kind of long but that is to be expected at a place that serves great food like this. Our sandwich was worth the wait. I can't wait to come back again.

Yelp
Well I have been trying to work my way through the menu and Saturday was an epic failure. I just had to have the Classic New York Pastrami on Marble served warm. This is just an incredible sandwich and I may never make it through the menu. This is the third time and it's just as incredible as the first. The bread is soft and warm with that pumpernickel flavor. Piled high with Pastrami, deli mustard, and pickles. I was in sandwich heaven while my taste buds did a happy dance. The misses got the Zack Johnson with Banana Peppers. She is stuck on it as well and wasn't helping with a new sandwich to try. I tried it and agree it's phenomenal as well. Oh well, guess we will have to go back again and try something different or the same. I can't complain because this is just the Best Damn Manhattan Deli in Des Moines. They don't take phone orders after 230 on Saturday. I didn't make it until 7 minutes before closing and they didn't mind. I was hoping for a pick up so I wouldn't be the last customer. Thank you for another epic lunch Manhattan Deli!

Michele E.

Yelp
Sat. 10:00am not open & no note, 10:30 not open no door note. Not answering's the Phone! WTHeck? Sandwiches are ok not real big for the price, Many other very good deli places around town, this one is closer.

Yelp
The food is amazingly delicious. Today I enjoyed the chi-iowa. Italian beef. Tine had the daily special. I recommend this place very highly

Yelp
Had lunch here today for the first time and it won't be our last! Our sandwiches were prepared fresh and fast and we loved the ambiance.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Very good sandwiches. Fresh. Sides are homemade and good. The cheese and meats are sliced perfect. We love going there.
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
Omg!!! Fresh. Perfect. Fast. Mouthwatering sandwiches. Too many options too choose from which keeps me visiting twice a month AT LEAST. EVERYONE GO HERE
google avatar

Amy Y.

Yelp
Food is fantastic and over shadows anything neutral or slightly negative I could say about this place! People weren't as friendly as some other local delis in the area. Ambiance is ok. The sandwiches don't disappoint. The Hawaiian or Hula girl or something like that made such an impression on me that I can't stop thinking about it! Go here for the food! Yum!

Ken L.

Yelp
Great New York deli with friendly staff. The whole family really enjoyed the food. Very busy but ample seating.

Yelp
The Manhattan Deli is a long-time institution in the Ingersoll Business District. Last remodeled in what feels like the late 1970s, the look, smells, hustling sandwich crew behind the old-school counter/cooler will leave you feeling like you've stepped into a Manhattan deli. Most of the sandwiches on the menu have their own names, as well they should - each has their own character making them stand out from other sandwich joints. Good soups, pasta salads, and baked desert items guarantee there is something for you. A couple of new additions well worth calling out are The Big Apple (served cold - turkey, bacon, cole slaw, Granny Smith apples, balsamic glaze, Buckwee's mustard, baby swiss, mayo) and the Grinder soup (think Italian sausage grinder sandwich in the form of a rich and hearty soup). Fantastic! Dining space has always been snug, but in today's dining climate, it is well worth considering calling in your order for a quick pick up at the register. They will have you out the door with your delicious meal in a New York minute!

Mary Kate L.

Yelp
LOVE Manhattan Deli! One of my favorite sandwiches is their thanksgiving sandwich in November--but they have great items year round. The service is friendly and fast and it's such a gem!

Yelp
Quick, efficient and delicious. The only set back is parking, but that's most businesses on Ingersoll. This hidden gem is unassuming, yet soooo good. No need for fancy decor when you serve up mouth watering sandwiches. Each time I have visited this sandwich shop, I always leave full, happy and satisfied. The employees have a great workflow and work effectively to get your order done without delay. If you can't stay, they have a line for pick up orders. Good luck on making a decision on which one you will try.

Crissy B.

Yelp
The Rueben sandwich was the best ever. It was stacked with the freshest corned beef and best bread. The brownies were out of this world. Very friendly and fast service. We will definitely be returning.

Djuna H.

Yelp
I've been going to this Deli since the 1970's when it was Bassman's Deli, then the Dagget's bought it, then Hagar's bought it and made it what it still should be today. Unfortunately, the new, rather unpleasant owners, the Hansen's, have destroyed this once iconic business. The last and final time I ate there, I got a migraine that lasted for 3 days (my first in over a decade). I believe they are using MSG, because there is something awful that they are now sprinkling on the roasted peppers and the cold cuts look sketchy, like Carl Buddigs, and are likely full of nitrites. It's sad to lose one of the best sandwich shops ever, but it's just not worth the risk to eat there and give my money to these not-so-nice owners. Two thumbs down.

Yelp
My co worker talked this place up. Here is my up front disclosure. I did not visit the location, so I can not say I was "here", but the kind coworker let us pick our meals and brought them back to us. I had no clue where to start, so I read the Yelp reviews The Tuesday Special seemed to be a hit. So even though it was Wed, I still ordered it for the extra cents. I knew I wouldn't have a problem getting it per the other reviews. The menu also lets you know you can get any daily special on any day of the week. Tuesday Special:Oven-roasted turkey, ham, Swiss cheese, mayo, parmesan cheese sauce, mayo, Manhattan seasoning on a hoagie bun. Cheese, cheese sauce... mouth was watering already! When I got mine, I opened it and took my normal Yelp picture.... a few moments later we discovered they had labeled the sandwich wrong and I had gotten my coworkers. She had already taken a bite of mine, but I didnt care, I was gonna fight her for my cheesiness. I got mine and slowly devoured the melted gooey cheese that took over. Good flavor and good sized sandwich. I didnt need any extra chips or anything. I am glad we were able to enjoy this sandwich. I did get a chance to steal a bite of her sandwich which was good. I stole a bite of someones brownie, which melted in my mouth. And all the other people who got sandwiches really enjoyed theres. Since I could never have eaten the whole thing I took home the leftover to my husband who had it the next day. He heated it up and had it. He liked it but he thought it would have been better fresh. Which I agree, it was good fresh. I would eat from there again.

Yelp
Quite a nice hole in the wall if you call it that. This was a great place. We had the Wednesday combo and a salted caramel cookie. I definitely recommend this is weird from out of state. It was a great place to visit in the food was excellent.

Jim H.

Yelp
LOVE THIS PLACE!!! The sandwiches are the best in the Metro, love the basic yet interesting decor. The staff is great and the prices are very reasonable!!

Andrew S.

Yelp
Had been told by a few friends that I need to check this place out and I would always forget. Big mistake on my part. The sandwiches are amazing. The bread it so soft and chewy. I had the Thursday special which was an Italian type sandwich. Man the flavor was awesome. Tasted like someone's grandma spent many hours putting love and pride in it cause it tasted so awesome. Also had the pumpkin spice bar and it didn't disappoint either. Soft followed by loads of wonderful flavor. Was moist not dried out. This place is a must.

Scott C.

Yelp
Have been here many times. It's always wonderful. Can be busy but the line moves fast. The sandwiches and soups are always great. Can't get enough of them. Highly recommend if you're in The Des Moines area.

Yelp
Great to see the Buroughs Bodacious Sammie Shop is still taking care of its Kramer's... Hoggies all lined up behind glass to Make Castansa Sweat it out to make a decision... But I've been here before soo I step up like Jerry and Smoothly make my way through the system...There is always a nice Lady to Help if your a Newman... Love the Warm Sammie today but always recount a Sweet Classic; the Cold Sub "Zack Johnson" will make Elaine yell STELLA, Stelllaa, Stelllaaaaah. . .
google avatar

Yelp
I have never had a meal that was anything less than spectacular here! I love this deli! Now that I'm living closer to DT, this is definitely a highlight!
google avatar

Yelp
Great sandwiches and daily specials! Service is unique and super personable! Thursday's special is my favorite! Italian grinder, this is not on the everyday menu and is well worth a trip!

Yelp
Manhattan Deli is a hidden gem. If you love deli food come here!! Growing up in the Des Moines area I had never heard of this place. The building is small and almost blends in to all the other buildings on Ingersoll. Right when you walk in though you just know that just has delicious food. The atmosphere just makes you feel like you are in a family restaurant. I love that local feeling! I got the #6 with the pasta salad. Turkey, smoked cheddar, onions, lettuce and mayo on a fluffy hoagie bun. What's not to love? Don't forget to add onions if you are into that! The pasta salad was good but different- I would get it again! If you are on the fence about trying it, this is your sign!!

Yelp
This restaurant still has that old time feel it's a definite classic type vibe and the owners are relatively new.  The service was fast and efficient and the line moved along quickly. It's about expectations this is not a mall based restaurant or a high end bistro somewhere.  The food was ok. Being from the East I've always been disappointed at the quality of Delicatessens in Des Moines.   I've always longed for the type of delicatessen that had really good quality cheeses. That did not skimp on the quality of the extras like pickles and other condiments  and actually maybe made some of their own meats like their own corn beef or their own roast beef and made sure they got really high quality ham that tasted like ham. Long Ago there was a place called "Noshs" it was the best. "Dahls Grocery store" now closed used to cook their own roast beef, and had great roast beef sandwiches and "the library " in Drake a bar also used to make there own roast beef and corn beef and turkey breast for lunch sandwiches.  Those days are long gone I guess, The bean counters have won. This restaurant is better than a Subway or other fast food deli but It's a long way from old school deli that I grew up with.  There must not be a market for that type of quality lunch meat anymore. I personally would pay more, most people want cheap and fast. La Mie Bakery makes great pre-made sandwiches with their wonderful French bread my favorite is brie and ham, it will be my future go to.Hope someone someday will step up the delicatessen restaurant situation in Des Moines.

Yelp
The new owners need to go back to the ingredients used by the previous owners. I have eaten at the HAGAR deli since the 80's and the delicious food has been topic of my family's conversations more than I can count. The HANSEN'S deli which is now owned by Carey Hansen and her husband (This YELP site took over the previous owner site and is not the current owners ratings) has changed so many tastes and not for the better. I have eaten under the new ownership twice now and...I cannot believe I am saying this...I will not be back. The sides were a compliment to the sandwiches and tasted fresh but the potato salad now has that foamy chemical taste from mass production prepackaged as well as the tasteless and foamy coleslaw. The macaroni salad has a brown tint?!? What could make it brown AND tasteless? The baked beans had tons of fatty squares in it...I guess to make you think a home cook slipped in some of the ham during cooking...but with this many squares I know it isn't the case. Oh and my pickles...I know, I know, who can mess up a pickle?!...but both times now my pickle has been CHEWY! I take a bite and have to tear it sideways to break the piece off. Not a one off...so is it a lower quality pickle? The Wise Guy sandwich was pre-made in the cooler because it is such a popular item.....but guess what? It was missing the hot pepper cheese! We were all the way home when we unpacked so too far to go back. Suggestion to the new owners...please just go back to the original offerings that kept this place open and successful for 40 years. Please.

Yelp
Vegetarian Reuben I may have just had the best veggie Reuben sandwich available in the greater 48 states today. I had to share this for the vegetarians out there. I honestly didn't think such a item existed but the wife snagged me one while she was down in the area. Very decent size. Packed a lot of girth like a traditional great deli style sandwich. Ton of flavor with a noticeable and appreciated, (but definitely not over baring), hint of spiciness. I apologize for not having taken any pictures the first bite took me by such surprise that I think I was a bit dazed during the remainder of this sandwich. I literally said out loud to myself, "that was awesome" once I came to my senses after the last bite The pumpkin bar/cake was terrific too, I only snuck a couple bites as I suspected it was actually meant for the kids. But that Sandwich definitely left me with a decent sweet tooth afterwards so it's nice to know they have you covered there too! Thank you - highly recommend- will be back!

Mark B.

Yelp
Fabulous sandwiches. Love the grilled peppers. Sandwiches are huge. Good for a second meal. Service is fast.
google avatar

Kat B.

Yelp
My boss has bragged about this place for years. I finally got to go! I had the Zach Johnson hoagie - Turkey, pepperoni, salami with provolone and pepper cheese, no veggies! It was awesome, especially because they warmed it up for me! I thought the soups looked great along with all the meats in the case. I also got a chocolate chip cookie, which was great. I will definitely be back and can't wait to further explore the menu!
google avatar

Jean L.

Yelp
Awesome! In town for business and was really craving a good sandwich. Stopped by Hagar's to be greeted with the smiliest of faces and friendliest of employees. Ordered a hot sub (pastrami based) and a side of pasta salad. Got it within two minutes. Excellent service. My only regret was that I wasn't able to tip on my credit card. The food itself was wonderful. The bun was light and the pastrami was flavorful but not overly sodium-heavy. Parking next door and on the street. Easy!

Marilyn T.

Yelp
I love their pasta salad and soup. I haven't had anything here that I didn't like! Their desserts are amazing also.
google avatar

Jason K.

Yelp
Very impressed! First time trying this place. Really good. Wife & I split Louie & The Popper sandwich. Portions were great - loaded with meat. Flavors for both sandwiches were very nicely balanced-not too heavy on any one thing. Breads were good, fresh. I will plan on going back and would definitely recommend trying their food!
google avatar

Karin L.

Yelp
This place is fantastic -- a true gem of Des Moines. Absolutely the only true to form deli here in the the Des Moines area. I just love the simplicity of this place -- good food, that's it. What else do you need? Their food has the best ingredients and the staff behind the counter makes you feel as if you've been their regular for years, even if it's your first visit. My favorite thing to get here is the Susie -- I want to try so many other things on the menu, but the Susie is so good I just keep getting it again and again. The bagel is the perfect texture and the flavor of the warm cream cheese, slices turkey, and pickles on top . . . I don't know what it is about it, but it is heaven. Likely it doesn't matter what you order here though - anything you try here is going to be absolute perfection.
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
Manhattan Deli still ranks in my top three Des Moines fave restaurants They have never been flashy Always offering beyond authentic sandwiches that will stimulate your soul and blow your mind They provide great food served quickly at very reasonable prices Plus it's like traveling back to the 80's and into a part of Jersey It's truly a gem Love spending money here Sandwiches are like eating heaven
google avatar

Brandon Y.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to grab lunch, if you go here all you do is order the special or the day and I guarantee your taste buds will love it!
google avatar

Gabe N.

Yelp
Wow, just had my first sandwich here, Manhattan, and it was awesome! Brownie and salad we're kick ass as well!!! I don't know how I didn't know about this place. Can't wait to come back :-)
google avatar

Christopher L.

Yelp
I have been eating here for years! It is always busy, but the wait is not too bad...unless you are starving. Today I had the Betty(personal favorite), small Mac Salad and a Brownie. It really took me back, wish I lived closer. Keep up the great work!
google avatar

Libby P.

Yelp
This is my favorite deli joint ever. Same woman has been there since I was young at the register. Family owned and operated business. The Charlie is my favorite
google avatar

Craig Z.

Yelp
OMG this place is good. Just had the $5 monday special Vito sandwich. It was served warm and all of the flavors just blended perfectly together in the soft hoagie roll. I also tried a side of slaw that was just awesome. I can't wait to come here again!
google avatar

Brenda R.

Yelp
Omg! What a find! Visiting from California and so glad we came in. Super cute deli - DELICIOUS sandwiches!
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
If there's a better place to get a sandwich in Iowa I'd like to hear about it. The quality of the food is only bettered by the service. I make sure to get back here every time I make it back to my home town. Absolutely amazing.

Connett H.

Yelp
I have gone to this restaurant since I was a kid, and since it has been sold to the new owners, it is definitely not the same! The girl working the register was very snotty. When placing my order I had asked for my soup while my sandwich was being made (Like I have always done, even with the new owners) and she said yeah that is fine. Then after paying and waiting for the soup, I had gone back up and asked if I could have that soup now, since it was right behind her. She got very aggressive and said that's not how things work anymore and you can wait. She was very rude and unprofessional. If she would have stated when I was ordering that they can't do it that way anymore I would have understood, but to talk to a customer that way for no reason? Very disappointed and will unfortunately no be a returning customer anymore.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite local spots. Its locally owned and the staff are genuine - you can tell they care about their customers. Anything with hot pepper cheese or their homemade parmesan sauce is a must-try like the Mama Mia or the Tuesday special. Deli sides are delicious and they offer a wide range of sizes. I'm from Chicago and I love peppers on my sandwiches. Hagar's has great seasoned mild and hot peppers. Great on any sandwich! Decor is retro and funky. Great lunch spot any day of the week. **Cash Only**
