"Yes, Manicomio serves up large New York-style pizzas, calzones, and strombolis to-order. But the real reason to come is for the by-the-slice menu — cheese, pepperoni, and a daily vegan option. Starting at $3.25 a slice, there’s no better pizza bargain downtown, from a no-frills, indoor-outdoor space right on Biltmore Avenue." - Eric Barton

Google
I deem this the best slice in Asheville. I’ve had a lot of slices during my time on earth, and this ranked top 5 instantly. Great crunch, great flavor, great cheese, visually appealing. Super friendly staff 10/10 recommend

Google
Very delicious pizza! The pepperoni slice was perfect . Thin crust, a lil crunch , great quality ingredients, the pepperoni was thin not thick , was perfectly cooked . Had the fried ravioli and they were good, but the pizza was the hero. Coca-Cola was perfect. Booth was comfortable and the staff friendly . They let my service pooch sit inside with me in booth and we both had a great time.

Google
We both had the baked ziti with a garlic knot. It was good, and the portion was just right for me. My husband would have liked a larger portion especially for the price. The atmosphere is very bland, just a typical pizza joint. But the food is worth trying.

Angela Nicholson

Google
Garlic knots were good with the meat combined, but if you got a piece without the meat it was a very bland knot. The pizza was great. The cheese on the pizza was perfect. We had pineapple and ham and it was good. The crust was thin and not too crispy. Definitely would order the pizza again. The young man who greeted us at the door was extremely friendly. Great customer service.

Google
A great, affordable quick slice. Not quite New York style, but pretty darn good and close enough in these parts. Nice people and a casual vibe, exactly what you'd expect in a pizza joint. Definitely coming back.

Google
My friend and I ate lunch at Manacomio and thought it was great. I had a Philly cheese steak that was fantastic and my friend had a Reuben that she proclaimed excellent. Not really much atmosphere, but a great place for lunch!

Google
10 out of 10 recommend! From the amazing services from all the staff (especially Sean) to the food. The whole experience was a good one. We had a hungry one year old with us and the staff made sure his slice came out first for him and even cut it up into small pieces. Definitely will be back next time we are in town.

Jarred Gillette

Google
Very solid pizza offerings, small menu but the quality is there. Staff is fast and friendly, drinks are tasty, and they have indoor and outdoor dining options. Prices are also VERY reasonable for the downtown area where eating can be expensive.

Yelp
Family stopped in here looking for last minute dinner. Pizza was great! Our nine month old had the kid's spaghetti, and he liked it so much he cried in between bites for more. 100% recommend.

Judy Z.

Yelp
I had it delivered. It took 2 hours and arrived cold. I wouldn't necessarily assume the restaurant is at fault for this. But then there's the pizza. Blandest pizza I've ever had. I'm not one to typically add salt to my food, but this needed salt and flavor. It also seemed a little undercooked. I ended up adding salt, garlic, and red pepper flakes and baking it for a bit longer. At that point it was 'okay'.

Sanjay G.

Yelp
Pizza is well made. I was a bit surprised by the fact that they were unwilling to swap one topping for another and we had to remove and add to pay for it. The pizza is super expensive - 14 inch pizza for $25 is a quite pricey. Other than that it's a fine place to get a pizza in a hurry. The parking is paid parking on all the broadway. The service is quick and ambiance is reasonably nice for a pizza place.

John B.

Yelp
A prominent building in the center of the city, this offers a basic necessity: pizza. Importantly, they sell by the slice. Ordering a cheese slice and a slightly leafier Sicilian slice got me a nicely browned crust and contrasting flavor notes from different cheese types. Not the most impressive pizza I've had in Asheville, and their salad selection didn't really do it for me, but of enough quality to be worth the stop in. They have an outdoor seating deck and a brick-lined interior, so it's a nice place to enjoy a slice.

Amber K.

Yelp
Great experience here. Service was great and there was seating available. When you enter, you order and pay at the counter, and then they bring you your food. It wasn't a long wait for 2 sandwiches, a specialty slice and a calzone. Definitely great for a quick bite when downtown.

Payton W.

Yelp
I've been here twice because it's so great when you need a quick bite. The staff is awesome and the food was ready super quickly. The pizza itself is nothing life changing but it totally does the job! I did enjoy the garlic knots a lot.

Mariana V.

Yelp
Food was delicious, service was great, and ambiance was nice and casual. Just what we were looking for!

Tiane H.

Yelp
super convenient to get to from our hotel and the pizza was really good! The service was quick and the people were nice. I could eat this pizza over and over again! Definitely worth a try!

Hannah D.

Yelp
This is a good run of the mill pizza place. We got a carry-out pizza and it was ready very quick (especially impressive for a Friday night). The pizza itself was good - the sauce had a sweetness to it that I really liked. My only critique is that the dough/bread part of the pizza was a bit hard/tough. Otherwise, I was satisfied.

Ben S.

Yelp
Came here for an event and unfortunately we were not impressed. Service was very slow and pizza was scant and just OK. Salads were OK as well. Can't speak to the price but they didn't nail the northeast neighborhood pizza joint vibe very well.

George W.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our meal of pepperoni pizza, eggplant rollatini & penne Alfredo. The tomato sauce was fresh and delicious. The pizza crust was thin and nicely baked with a buttery crust. The Alfredo sauce was good too. Served with garlic knots. It is a casual restaurant. The friendly server brought water for our pup without our asking. There's a very large patio that looks as though it would be nicely lit at night.

Denise K.

Yelp
Music too load and not everyone's taste. We sat outside on the dog friendly patio, which was nice except the shrubs need pruning, the beds had tall weeds, the string lighting had exposed, broken bulbs and the tables needed washing. Looks like there is no attention to the nice space and location they have. They have decent food and the wait staff I'd usually nice. But, hey, everything matters with the amount of competition in Asheville.

Mimi N.

Yelp
Great place to stop for a slice. It's no NYC pizza, but it does the job. I had regular cheese pizza which didn't have as much flavor as NYC but I enjoyed it. Crust was crispy and it came out piping hot.

Alexis R.

Yelp
Tried Manicomio as part of a food tour and loved it! I am a huge fan of NY style pizza and their corned beef is house made!

Dean W.

Yelp
I only had 1 slice of cheese pizza - and it's rare to find places that serve slices - it's authentic NY style pizza - great sauce!

Juliana D.

Yelp
Decent pizzeria in downtown Asheville. Saw it while walking around and saw that they have a huge outdoor patio with lots of seating. The service was great and the place was nice. My sisters and I just wanted some quick food, so we decided on pizza by the slice and and Italian sub. The pizza was pretty good. I liked the sauce a lot. The Italian sub was ok. I wasn't a fan of the balsamic vinegar on it. Also it was not worth $10. Overall, the restaurant was good for a quick stop when walking g around downtown.

Mark W.

Yelp
Phenomenal Rueben sandwich!!! Buttery and crunchy with just the right amount of beef and kraut!!! Must go!!!

Mali C.

Yelp
Yes! Slices NY style. I love being able to order a $10 slice of pizza with every topping I've ever wanted on a pizza. It's fun and indulgent but yolo. Their food is actually reasonably priced. Sometimes I just get carried away with add ons. It's definitely me not them. The pizza here is very new York style. While I usually build an insanely expensive slice I sometimes get pasta, the pasta is carb my comfort goodness. My one recommendation is always save room for dessert.

Rachel B.

Yelp
Let me tell you about this vegan pizza they serve. I've been vegan going on 4 years -- that's how long it's been since I've had dairy cheese -- and that's how long I've had to try probably a hundred of vegan cheeses. This cheese fooled me!! I had to go back to the counter to confirm it was vegan!! Now, my dairy loving partner said she could tell it was vegan, but that it was very good. I got the vegan stromboli and so glad I did. Thanks to the cashier for recommending it. Everything about it was perfect. It's also so rare to find a place that sells vegan pizza by the slice (so dope!) and even will put whatever you want on that slice (stop it now -- it's just too much!). Everyone (vegans and the rest of y'all) -- go get some pizza from here!!!

Keturah M.

Yelp
As a native NYer (from the actual city) and proud self proclaimed food critic, I am constantly on the search for good pizza. I may have even subconsciously downgraded to searching out "decent" pizza, because the high expectations have left me a disappointed diner more times than not. Cue Manicomio Pizza! OMG, What good pizza! I haven't had a NY slice in years!!! But who could forget it? Their pizza slices are made perfectly and tastes like authentic NYC pizza - The crust is tasty and the cheese is top notch. They have very good customer service and are willing to put whatever toppings you want on a slice with no judgement, just a steep cost :) But it was all worth it!

Adam G.

Yelp
We tried Manicomio for a quick dinner one night after a long day of hiking and exploring the area. Our go-to pizza order is usually pepperonis and banana peppers -- two toppings that my SO and I can always agree on. Most of the time we do a build your own and select our toppings, but Manicomio had one with exactly what we wanted! It was called the Ashevillian. Sizes are 14", 16", or 20". It was ready in about 10 minutes. I don't know if I just wasn't that hungry or what, but the pizza was just okay. Interestingly, it tasted better the next day for leftovers when we ate it cold. Overall, 3 stars in my opinion.

Briana Y.

Yelp
This restaurant is conveniently located downtown in close proximity to many hotels for overnight visitors. We had the Smokie Arthichokie pizza and it was good, but the fried ravioli were great! Do yourself a favor and whatever you get, be sure to order the fried ravioli as well.

Nicole G.

Yelp
Manicomio catered my small wedding and did a fabulous job! We ordered a selection of pastas and salad, and my Sicilian in-laws were impressed with how good it was. Would absolutely use them again!

Marina R.

Yelp
I moved to Asheville three months ago and this is still our favorite pizza. Thin, cheesy, slightly sweet sauce just the way I like it. Well, I get it for my son because it is his favorite pizza and he doesn't really like a lot of food. It is so good I can't even look at it! I am leaving Asheville, but I will miss Manicomio pizza and will stop by when I visit. Yumm! Cheers!

Ben S.

Yelp
Fantastic pizza. The air duct work is admittedly not much to look at but for a small pizza joint with a psych ward sign I think it perfectly captures the vibe. Also, I can see that the main line was sealed with water-based duct butter instead of oil-based so points for being food-safe :)

Gary S.

Yelp
Still by far the best NY style pizza in town. Always consistently excellent, very friendly staff, innovative pizza selection, great sandwiches, exactly what you need for lunch or dinner, just south of Pack Square, huge outdoor eating area. The best!

Matt R.

Yelp
Overpriced mediocre pizza for tourists. sucks cause when they first opened I thought it was pretty good.

Onvara A.

Yelp
The two of us stopped by Manicomio Pizza for dinner while we were in downtown Asheville because we noticed there was a really nice, spacious outdoor dining area. You order at a street-side window and then they'll bring your order out to you if you're dining there. We got the White Sauce Pizza (olive oil & garlic base, mozzarella, ricotta, pecorino romano). We were warned that it would be about $2 to add each additional topping, but we were really feeling it, so we added pineapple and red peppers as well. The pizza was good, but nothing mind-blowing and honestly without the extra toppings, it would've been just a plain cheese and olive oil pizza. We did have some leftovers though which was nice!

Marj D.

Yelp
We love the pizza, salads and outdoor area. Very nice spot to have a great meal. Their pizza is one of the best in AVL.

Donna K.

Yelp
We love this pizza! There's no place that can match their perfect thin crust, sauce and cheese. And the staff is so upbeat and fun. When our pizza was delayed, they threw in a free cannoli! Best pizza in Asheville, hands down!

Adam G.

Yelp
Strolling down Biltmore ave I see a wonderful sign, I was totally vibing pizza this must be divine, walk inside and I am greeted with a smile, haven't felt this welcome at a restaurant in awhile, place my order and walk out to a beautiful patio, sipping local beer cans or draft they flow, the piping hot food arrives in record time, I take my first bite and my minds sublime, this place is dankalicious every single time, the food is indescribable but if I attempt a rhyme, cheesy fresh sauce vine ripened tomato, classic amazing food americana italiano.

Chris C.

Yelp
Great food! We had the Sicilian and youngest had the spaghetti with 2 meatballs. Outstanding! Great atmosphere and we ate outside with our fur baby.

Annie M.

Yelp
I'm not a tough critic of restaurants but after talking with my husband, we agreed that Manicomio is a 3-star restaurant. We've been in twice now and have been felt very 'meh' about the pizza both times. Everything that I read about them claims that they are NY style pizza but my experiences do not align with that claim. Their pizza has very thin crust, little sauce, little cheese and is served with a cardboard like crunchy texture of crust. It doesn't flop over or bed at all. The flavor is OK but kinda bland. I can't comment on anything other than the pizza but they do have a bunch of other things on their menu that you'd see at any Italian lunch restaurant, such as pasta, dessert, sandwiches. All that being said, their pizza is edible, just pretty OK, especially compared to the other awesome Asheville joints. The reason I chose to give them 3 stars is because their staff are really friendly and take great care of their customers. I also absolutely love the space. The indoor dining space has toy figurines from the 80 and 90s such as Wonder Woman, Steve Urkele and more. They also have a deer head dressed up funny which made me really happy. Their outdoor dining area is really the star of this place! They have a large outdoor patio space with great lighting, a colorful mural and comfortable seating. I'll go back if I'm ever with friends if they are wanting to go, but probably won't go back on my own.

Yelp
good got chease pizza it was kindda expensive but very good ssssssssssddddddddddssdsss

Kelly D.

Yelp
Delicious! Inside has some seating but after placing your order at the counter you can sit outside where there is plenty of seating in thier courtyard. Shade and sunny available Forgot to pictures as we were to busy enjoying the fresh air and good food!

carly g.

Yelp
We had the Ashevillian (medium) and was perfect size to fill two people! We asked for extra ranch which was a good idea because it was delicious. Everyone in there was hilarious and friendly.

Kathleen L.

Yelp
The calzones and Stromboli was amazing. I had the veggie Stromboli and substituted vegan cheese. Amazing spot to visit in Asheville. I love the assortment of desserts. I love there was enough variety for different diets. This spot saved our annual girls trip .

Dan G.

Yelp
Good food but bad service and wait time - We researched this place and were satisfied by the reviews and prices. It was easy to find and we were able to get parking on the street on a busy Saturday (14 Oct 2023). When we got there, there weren't too many people inside the restaurant and very few on the outside. After a quick check of the menu, I ordered the vegtable calzone and the meatball sub. The calzone came out after about 20 minutes. After about 20 more minutes I was about to go to the counter with my receipt thinking that maybe my order had been forgotten. It was precisely at that point that one of the four cooks came out with a badly burned over-cooked sub and an apology that they were short staffed and had forgotten about the other half of our order. I let the staff member know that we would need a different sub and the very apologetic cook said that it would take about 4 minutes and they had one being prepared at that very moment. It took another 10 minutes before one arrived via a different employee, a young man. Both items were very tasty. I must say, however, that the service was completely lacking and I'm very disappointed. There was no attempt to comp us for the inconvenience.

Michelle V.

Yelp
For our weekly dinner delivery, we chose Manicomio pizza. We ordered through Kickback delivery on a Sunday at 6:00. First, let's address Kickback. For those of you not familiar with this delivery service, it is much like Doordash, GrubHub, Uber Eats, etc. However Kickback is locally owned and operated, and they donate 30% of every driver fee to local Asheville charities. This is why I choose them over other delivery companies that may cost less. The baseline delivery fee is $4.99 (more for each mile beyond 5), which means a driver will typically make $3.50 off every order (before tip). To put that in perspective, your driver averages $1.75/ order (or hour, since that's how long a delivery typically takes) for their time and expenses as a contracted employee (after taxes, costs and deductions). TIP YOUR DRIVER WELL! If you cannot afford to tip your driver, then don't order delivery. If you cannot afford to tip your server, then don't eat out. Now to the restaurant. I've personally never had a New York style pizza, so I was really looking forward to trying Manicomio. We ordered the Ashevillian with pineapple added, Baked Ziti, and house salads. My husband has had a New York style pizza before and while he says the pizza was good, it wasn't a real NY pizza. I thought the pizza was cooked and favored perfectly, but it wasn't the best pizza I've ever had. We asked for the ranch dressing to be on the side and they put it on the pizza. I guess they overlooked that special request, which wasn't a huge deal breaker. The house salads were fresh and delicious, although I wish they provided more dressing as there wasn't enough to evenly coat the salad. The Ziti was also delicious; no complaints. I would definitely recommend trying this place at least once.

Richard S.

Yelp
I'm not from here but most Asheville establishments have not been friendly but hear guys offered me free drink while I wait for pizza pickup, we're friendly and kind. I recommend people with good attitudes. The pizza looks NY style authentic too (my kids are eating it).

Madelyn D.

Yelp
The wings here were some of the best wings I have ever had. The buffalo sauce is the chefs kiss. Pizza is pretty good too.

Aimee C.

Yelp
Really delicious!!! Ordered: Medium cheese pizza- tasted like excellent NY pizza. White pie - really great favor. Quaint place. I would definitely come back. The medium pizza was enough for 2 people, but if your really hungry a large might be better.

Olivia G.

Yelp
The girl who "greeted" us at the front upon entering was very unfriendly and unwelcoming, other staff members were not very engaging or particularly nice, all staff members we encountered during our visit seemed uninterested in providing any type of real customer service. Food was okay, nothing special, certainly not worth $18 for a pizza, the sauce, cheese and toppings all tasted store bought, the crust was the only redeeming quality. The atmosphere of the restaurant was nothing noteworthy, wouldn't have been an issue if the rest of our experience had been positive. Overall unimpressed, I will not be returning to this restaurant under any circumstances and I certainly would not recommend it to others.

Edwin C.

Yelp
Manicomio means insane asylum in Spanish, and you'd belong in one of you don't like the pizza at Manicomio! The pizza is perfectly cooked, great dough. The wings are so crispy and just a tiny hint; order the buffalo sauce on the side! So good! We really enjoyed this place!

Beth E O.

Yelp
Pizza sauce and cheese are tasty but it's burnt. Garlic knots are dry (no garlic/butter?) and have almost no flavor. Could be because we ordered right before they closed, not sure.

Rosie O.

Yelp
Delicious pizza! We grabbed slices and hung out outside and enjoyed them! As a NY girl I've got big expectations and they satisfied the craving for pizza! Will definitely be back next time we are in town!

Liz P.

Yelp
This pizza is so good! Super thin crust that has such a great crispiness. The pizza tasted like it had super fresh ingredients!

Steven R.

Yelp
While in the Asheville area, two members of our family had a taste for pasta. When we saw that they had calzones here, the rest of the family was "on board". All of us enjoyed our meal here. The calzones were very good. My wife enjoyed her chicken parmigiana and my son enjoyed his chicken and red sauce pasta. We also liked the sunken patio outside that we are on.

Dan F.

Yelp
Kind of a hole in the wall with just average pizza. We ordered three pepperoni slices from the pizzas out and added sausage to them. It looked like a thin NY style pizza. The slices were big with generous toppings. The pizza was delivered hot, but except for the toppings was subpar. There was not enough sauce to taste and the crust was crisp, but tasted like a cracker. Three slices and two draft beers was $29.59 plus tip. Not worth a second visit.
