Best Cafes Between Portland and Seattle - Eater Seattle

"One of Tacoma’s staple coffee roasters, Manifesto sits right in the heart of the city. While the shop’s interior design feels a little dark, the matte black Slayer espresso machine and San Franciscan roaster make great focal points. Just like the decor, the coffee menu here sticks to the essentials — with roasts ranging from dark to light — but the velvety nitro cold brew is the best bet for a major caffeinated boost." - Seiji Nanbu

Yelp
Simple and great. Their Spanish Latte was RIGHT up my alley - I got it half sweetened and it was delicious! I really dislike when my drinks are too sweet/sugary, and this had a beautiful balance between both. I also got a berry-type scone, scone was good but the latte was where it was at. I'm on a quest to find the 'best coffee' spot in Tacoma. Please check out my Yelp for other reviews on coffee shops in the area. This is a place I would most likely go to again, a short menu but packed with quality.

Yelp
Friendly, fast and knowledgeable service. Asked about of questions and the barista was great to answer them. They have VEGAN CREAM CHEESE, which is amazing for someone who has a dairy allergy. The coffee was delicious. I had a vanilla latte with oat milk. Friend had a match latte which she loved. She had it in a reusable mug which was very cute! Love the atmosphere - cute paintings and open area for working if needed.

Yelp
Such a cute place. Street parking wasn't hard to find. The space is bright and clean, lots of really cool art pieces. I had a Spanish latte, which was perfect. Nice space to sit and have an afternoon pick me up while waiting for the rain to stop.

Yelp
Delicious blueberry scone with the perfect texture. Pretty good coffee and they use quality syrups that make it worth the price for a little pick me up. The vibe is also pretty chill/cozy inside with the music being at a bearable volume (Great for conversation but not for studying/work imo) I'd return here if I was in the area but I won't go out of my way to come here. Thanks.

Yelp
This place deserves to be highlighted, Tacoma for some reason isn't that great with cafes IMHO, happy to get few suggestions on places. Went here as I had a doc appointment nearby and liked this cute coffee shop, decided to hangout and finish my assignments Baristas were warm and ordering was easy peasy, cafe felt quiet and music wasn't loud too, so working was easy as well. I got Vanilla Latte and it was good, coffee was smooth and I enjoyed my cuppa. Do visit this cafe if you're in Tacoma area.

Yelp
Visited on a Saturday afternoon and found it pretty quiet, possibly during a lull. Love the ambiance and style of the place. Customer service was kind and informative, explained what a Spanish coffee was and made sure our order was specific to any dietary needs. We ordered a Spanish coffee, vanilla latte, and strawberry pop tart, both pleasantly surprised by the temperature and taste of it all. Vanilla favoring was perfect, not too overwhelming and temperature was perfect (hot enough and ideal for sipping). Coffee shop featured local artwork and had lots of seating. There was some construction in front of the building, so we had to park around the block. Overall great experience, delicious coffee and vibe. Will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
A nice and quiet coffee shop in town. Good amount of tables and chairs so you can work or just hangout with friends. I ordered their latte, tasted decent but their foam is too rough imo. Just by looking at it, you can tell that's overly frothed with more than microfoam which was supposed to make your coffee smooth and sweet. Latte art is kind of there but could be better but I also understand it is a nice-to-have and it doesn't affect the taste.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere and ambience, along with the satellite radio music rotation. The service is great also. I only get the drip coffee and it's very tasteful.

Yelp
In my recent trip to Tacoma my husband and I Googled to see which coffee shop to try. We found Manifesto and we are so glad we tried it. We loved their coffee; compared to other cafes Manifesto's coffee tasted stronger, but it was very smooth. The service was friendly; the seatings were all taken, but it was a bit stuffy inside. Thankfully, there were few seatings outside so we sat outside and enjoyed our drinks. It was so neat to see the feather latte art still keeping the shape even when the latte was almost gone

Yelp
The service is nice and the latte was good! To be honest I wish I can try more stuff to give a better review but really no complaints here. It seemed like a nice hangout spot as well if you wanted to meet with friends for coffee.

Yelp
Coffee was amazing and service was perfect. Very nice crew working here!! Will absolutely be back again.

Yelp
Super cute local coffee shop. They have a handful of vegan gluten free goodies! I was stoked for that. The smell when you walk in is soooo good. You can tell right away that the coffee is going to be good. The menu is quite small, and direct, but I love it. Makes it easier to decide what to get. I get overwhelmed by options sometimes haha. I ordered a cappuccino with hemp milk (they don't have almond). The latte art (irrelevant to me) was cute but not wow. My friend ordered a cortado which looked great. They have a huge community table that has outlets, score! Also a couple Smaller tables. It's very peaceful and warm inside. I could easily spend the day working there. Give it a try. :)

Yelp
Delicious lavender latte, such a cheerful interior, lovely place to work along the windows. It is a quirky location, however... Kind of industrial. And yet, I would return!

Yelp
Fantastic coffee, great staff, and awesome shirts. Very "metal" inspired in design and feel. My partner and I will be coming back the next time we go through Tacoma.

Yelp
Great place near Downtown. Well, I think I'm near downtown anyway. Not to get sidetracked, but it's a great shoppe, with a great barista, and great music. Thank you!

Yelp
Cool spot, and on the day I visited the sun was out and there were some bistro tables out front. It looked like a cool space inside as well. The guy pulling shots was friendly and talked to us about their coffee. He said their house blend was most papau new guinea year round which I have a hard time believing, but at least the shots we had during our visit tasted decent. The coffee 'bar' for me is pretty high, and I wouldn't go out of my way to go here, but if I was in the area it's not a bad choice- especially if I was studying or meeting up with a friend.

Yelp
What's nearby? Turns out Manifesto Coffee was nearby and had a GREAT rating on Yelp. We were heading to Stadium High School to show our daughter where they filmed "10 Things I Hate about You" and found this was close enough to make a quick detour and try it out. The space is pretty small and the location seemed to not be in the most prime part of town. But when you can get coffee this good, of the other stuff takes a back seat. They pretty much just have coffee options right now. I took just a quick nip of my wife's double espresso and ordered up a chocolate steamer for myself and my daughter got a sweet and tasty almond steamer. The bit of coffee I sipped was great and something to go back for. The staff was friendly while they were busy doing the business of the day. If I lived here Manifesto would easily be a regular haunt. The prices are right in line with any quality coffee place and worth every penny.

Yelp
I think I have a problem. OK, maybe not a PROBLEM but I definitely have a craving that's developing into a full blown addiction... Bopping around the Hilltop area, I finally made it into Manifesto Coffee a few months ago and have been back regularly. It's more than the cool artwork in the bathrooms (rock oriented, Frazetta, etc.) and more than the VERY helpful, warm, engaging coffee sherpas behind the counter. For me, it's summed up in three little words: Spicy Cola Syrup. What's that, you say? You haven't heard of this before? Well, lemme help open your eyes as the Manifesto folks did for me. They have an excellent cold brew there...smooth but robust with amazing flavor notes. But even that level of deliciousness is taken to new heights by having them add a shot of their housemade Spicy Cola Syrup. At first taste, I knew I had a new favorite and something that I'd never experienced before. The spicy flavors added to the coffee taste were an ideal marriage. Unfortunately, I like it SO much that I've been back often...even twice in one day! Not that I'm complaining but people are starting to talk. :-) If you haven't been before, go check out Manifesto Coffee and try the SCS in cold brew. If you have been before, KEEP going to Manifesto so I can be sure they stay around to feed my habit.

Yelp
Cozy coffee shop. Friendly staff. Surprised to find such cafe in Tacoma area. Will return with friends again.

Yelp
Nice place to wind down and chill with a nice hot cup of drip coffee. I came in orders a black drip to go but ended up chillin here for about a couple of hours. It's pretty close to some other food places incase you get hungry too. The staff was really friendly and the coffee was great, fresh coffee. I don't know how many more cafes I need to try here in Washington, I lost count lol.

Jihea S.

Yelp
My friend and I are former part-time baristas, and we always love evaluating the microfoam of different coffee shops. The latte here is like drinking a cloud, and it's wonderful! I also came on a separate occasion for an iced vanilla oat milk latte, and the espresso is delicious here. The nuances of flavor and the acidity (in a bright good way) was pronounced! It's not in the safest area and not a ton of outlets if you're working on stuff, but I highly recommend trying out their coffee!

Yelp
Great little coffee shop! Great prices and great coffee! I walked in here yesterday while I was waiting for my haircut. Service was prompt and friendly and loved the vibe. Manifesto is next to the Goodfellas barbershop. I recommend checking this place out.
google avatar

Alden C.

Yelp
Aw. Who am I kidding? Manifesto deserves 5 stars! I come here every weekend and am a regular. I buy their drinks, their swag and their coffee beans. Definitely 5 star love here.
google avatar

Eunice C.

Yelp
Bad service. Didn't get a name but she was a redhead who looked miserable. Ordered a lavender latte and it was simply okay. I can overlook the lack of customer service but when the coffee is blah, the. They earn two stars. Another thing that bothered me is no size options. Their only option was tiny. Don't go. You're better off at Starbucks.
google avatar

Jess C.

Yelp
I've only tried their drip coffee and lavender latte, both of which were amazing. They offer hemp, almond, and oat milk, which is nice. A simple e menu with good coffee.
google avatar

Rachael B.

Yelp
So good! The cold brew was amazing. Not too acidic and had a nice light aftertaste. We will definitely be coming back! My husband loved his cappuccino as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice local neighborhood coffee shop. Cozy atmosphere, professional service and local recommendations were provided. Thank you!
google avatar

Jae S.

Yelp
What a cozy coffee shop tucked away on Hilltop. This is your straight laced coffee. None of that fluffy stuff! My friend and I tried the cold brew, which was pretty good. At the end of the coffee bar you can find cream, simple syrup, agave, cinnamon and stevia. I , personally, added simple syrup and cream - and went about my day. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Atmosphere/Vibe - 5/5 Coffee - 5/5 Price - Very reasonable. 5/5 Customer service - 5/5 This cafe feels like it would belong in a Life is Strange video game

Yelp
Awesome shop with great barista and sketch book made me feel so at home :) Will be back

Yelp
My significantly better half drives in the area a fair amount, so when she saw a new coffee place open she said we had to check it out--and check it out we did. Cozy little place, just enough seating for a decently sized handful of people. Not sure why others have complained that there isn't enough space. Valhalla only has a few seats, but it works. I'm a huge latte fan/snob. We got a latte and cappucino. The cappucino was very nice--roasty, chocolatey without being burnt/bitter/acrid. My latte was just OK. The milk to coffee ratio was heavily out of whack towards the milk end--I got very little espresso flavor, and just a TON of milk..which is a shame because I think they're doing espresso well here. Way way too much milk. Overall I'd rate the espresso being poured here as just a hair behind the Tacoma espresso kings of Valhalla, Bluebeard, and Metronome. Manifesto is close and I certainly hope they get there. Definitely worth stopping by and checking out. You could do FAR worse than getting an espresso drink from here!

Paula T.

Yelp
Was in the area and stumbled upon this place. The coffee here was average. I was surprised that the cold brew was just from a can. Coffee here is nothing special, it gets the job done but it's nothing amazing. Super friendly barista though!
google avatar

Carolyn S.

Yelp
I stopped in here while in town and grabbed a latte. The coffee is tasty and full of flavor. I love the menu is limited because their focus is on the craft of the coffee. The atmosphere is dark.. very PMW. I'd love to try their pour over next time I'm up in that area.
google avatar

Meggz G.

Yelp
What a simply beautiful setup with delicious coffee. I am new to the area and look forward to going back - especially with friends during the summer. I loved the atmosphere and the simplicity of the menu. I was a little disappointed as i hoped to feel more welcomed in the shop - but maybe it was just a rough day that day. Anyway - I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Amazing coffee, great staff. Clean and simplifying. Great place to relax and read or meet with friends. Do yourself a favor and grab a coffee here. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Jonas B.

Yelp
Their cappuccino is great, the staff is pleasant, parking is easy, and the vibe is good. I've been here a couple of times now and they are consistently doing very well. My goto place for morning coffee when in Tacoma.
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee! Stopped by on the way out of town to try some place new and it didn't disappoint. One of the best vanilla lattes I've ever had!
google avatar

Teresa E.

Yelp
Not only does the coffee have a fantastic burst of flavor, Mattie is so informative. She educated us on the flavors and made recommendations for what we can take home. Go check it out!
google avatar

Josie N.

Yelp
Honestly nothing special. Coffee tastes good but super simple menu. Doesn't offer anything special or anything that makes it stand out from other local coffee shops. Atmosphere wasn't super cozy but there were some cool design aspects, however during Covid I understand the atmosphere can't be anything outstanding. At the end of the day it's just another coffee shop but that's all it has to offer. Menu just has the basics and they don't even have cream for the coffee. I'd rather save myself the money and make my own cold brew at home personally.
google avatar

Tammy M.

Yelp
Coffee was delicious. The man behind the counter was extremely scared of bot allowing exempted guests into the coffee shop. The other way to get coffee was to call door dash- that didn't make sense how difficult was to accommodate 2 coffees as we could sit outdoors. The funny thing is I just had been to a appointment only governed building with no problem. Sad how people are so scared of getting fines and our government buildings are allowing exemptions. I felt bad for this business so they get 5 stars support them if your not exempt. Avoid if you are-

Yelp
I'm new to Tacoma and I'm a coffee nut from spending time in Columbia. Someone recommended this place to me while I was at Starbucks. One of THE best coffee shops I've been to. Aaron Wernli

Yelp
This is a very tiny place so there may not be room to sit down while you are there. But if thats not a problem for you, its a real nice spot. The coffee is roasted there in a tiny little roaster that is fun to watch. I had a short latte and it was very good. Even though the place is small I waited a few minutes until some space opened up and enjoyed my retreat from the rain. They were playing gloomy doom metal music which usually is not my favorite but it seemed appropriate while looking at the book that they had on thier shelf. The Brothers Hildebrandt (Some of the first art ever done for the Lord of the Rings - 1978)..... So for the simple fact that they have this amazing book on their shelf to look at while I sip coffee will bring me back.
google avatar

Terrill D.

Yelp
Unpretentious, fabulous coffee roaster. They sell beans locally to one of my favorite coffee shops. Locally made syrups ... fair prices ... and Internet. What else could you ask for in a coffee shop?
google avatar

Alexa P.

Yelp
I come to Tacoma from Seattle every weekend, and I've been searching for a good coffee place with minimal satisfaction for months now. I finally went a little out of my way to try Manifesto and I just.... YES! Finally! This is it! Wes pulled me an absolutely gorgeous (and delicious) espresso shot and told me about the components, and then poured me some of the best cold brew I've had all year. The space is on point - micro-roastery front and center with uniquely satisfying music and a clean, simple layout. Plus they're selling ~very~ cool sweatshirts. I get the feeling this place contributes to their community in a positive way. The people coming and going seem to know and care about the people who work here, and visa versa. Feels very special and like a place I'd like to keep supporting. Feels good, man. I hope this place is around for years to come.
google avatar

Jordan C.

Yelp
I've found my new local coffee shop! I loved their cappuccino, and they have good beans, too. I like the store's aesthetic - especially the black metal monk logo. When I was there, they had plenty of seating open, and there was no wait at the counter. I want to come read or write here sometime.

Andrew O.

Yelp
Delicious, strong medium roast drip coffee...efficient and friendly barista. Great Earl Gray tea.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
My vote for the best coffee shop in Tacoma. I generally stick with a strong Americano but am always satisfied. Guests I bring who prefer fancier coffees are never disappointed. Great, quiet environment with WiFi to get some work done as well.
google avatar

Sonja B.

Yelp
A great little hidden gem of a coffee shop in Hilltop Tacoma you just might miss but won't want to. Organic coffee beans get ground while you wait and your brew comes out hot with a foaming touch of artistic love. Hit it.

Davis M.

Yelp
Nice place to grab a cup of coffee or a conscientious place to grab and go for the day. Parking was easy and the coffee was tasty!
