Best Restaurants, Food Carts, and Bars in Salem, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Before you smell the scent of Manna Bakery’s delectable treats, you’ll spot the bright and cheery yellow entryway, the ideal spot to spend a relaxing morning in Salem. Owned by couple Lydia Shore and Dirk Liechty, the bakery began as a stand at Salem’s Saturday Market. Standout items include sourdough bread and both sweet and savory pastries: Find flaky danishes and filled croissants, tarts, chunky cookies, and several varieties of bread and cake. Like all good bakeries, there is a full espresso bar so you can enjoy a cup of coffee inside, outside, while walking in nearby Riverfront Park, or taking your kids to the nearby carousel with animals carved by local woodworkers." - Emily Teel

We found this place by surprise, and it was a wonderful surprise! It's a beautiful space. The lighting is warm, the art on the walls is pleasant, and the tables are wooden. It's a relief to find a place that hasn't moved to the industrial style of decor. It feels very welcoming to humans. Great bread. I love bread, and the pecan roll made me want to come back again. I hope some of those croissant twists are in my future! Very good prices on the coffee. I will say that I usually have dark roast coffee, but I tried a medium roast during my visit. It was pretty good... once I let it cool down. If you like to drink your coffee while it's piping hot, the dark roast is probably a better bet. I'm definitely glad I visited, and I highly recommend it.

Manna Bakery is such a gem in Salem. The space is clean, bright, and inviting, and the staff make you feel right at home. The pastries and baked goods (marble rye) are absolutely delicious and fresh, a perfect mix of comfort and quality. I especially loved the thoughtful touches—when I visited, there was a lovely art display on the walls and even live harp music playing, which made the whole experience feel extra special and memorable. Highly recommend this spot if you’re looking for not just great pastries, but also a warm and unique atmosphere in the heart of Salem.

Great baked goods and especially bread. I’ve had a few of their pastries and their Marion berry croissant twists are not to be missed. The gps led me to the alley which is not where it’s located. The entrance is on State st. and I included some photos to help locate it. They also have games and reading material so it’s a great place for kids or just to hang out. There was live music when I went as well. 10/10 would recommend.

I come here once in a while because they have pastries without seed oils. But most of their pastries taste the exact same to me, with different toppings that don't have much flavor (just a lot of sugar). Flavor-wise it's mid, especially at $6.00 for one pastry.

Google
I got an iced chai and a Marion berry twist. And I’m heart broken I couldn’t get a slice of cheese cake today. But why can’t I tomorrow? Why can’t I come back every day? They have loaves of homemade breads and sandwiches and coffee and tea and… it’s just all very good.

Google
Amazing pastries, Sourdough bread, and cheesecake! Had to try it all... happy that I did! The service was very friendly too.

Google
A great place to meet friends, but the overpriced subpar pastries, lackluster coffee, and some of the worst coffee shop staff in town make this a place worth missing. One gal that works here is extremely nice, but everyone else would rather be anywhere else but serving you or making good food. Save your time and energy and go to Gov Cup for a way better experience and coffee☕️

Google
A friend of mine told me about this place, and it did not disappoint! It's super cute with its decor, and I love the board games and books they have for you to enjoy. The selection of pastries is fantastic! Everything from simple to sweet to savory. I got a chocolate croissant and it was melt-in-your-mouth yum! The service was also great, professional, and welcoming. They also have yummy, fancy coffee. If you get there early, you might be able to snag a loaf of fresh sourdough bread! 🫠 I cannot say enough about this place. Goodbye money and waste line, I'm definitely making this a regular stop! 🥰

Yelp
I went to this place for the first time 2 weeks ago, as soon as I walked in there I fell in love... Everything there is beautiful, the space itself is vast and inviting, the lighting, the tables.. the arts the books. Then comes the pastries... . All of it looks delicious. I tried a few and can't wait to go there again and try other things. The coffee cake is superb. Love all of it

Yelp
I have been having a stressful couple of days, so I decided to treat myself with a visit to a bakery that has been on my to-do list for a while. The atmosphere is one marked by an open, welcoming space with high ceilings and lots of big tables. There were quite a few people seated inside, enjoying beverages and baked goods. The glass case was packed with goodies, all with labels that were helpful and clear. Service was very friendly, and patient with customers trying to make their choices. I had time to pick out my selections while another customer was being helped. I went with a to-go box, wanting to enjoy my haul at home. I picked a peach and green tea cream danish, an almond cream croissant, a ham and cheese croissant, and a chipotle/cheese/corn croissant twist. This place is the best of its kind in Salem! The dough in all my selections was perfectly light, airy, full of buttery flavor and with a crisp, flaky texture! The sweet selections were delicious, with the almond cream and the peach danish both providing nuanced flavors and delicate sweetness. The two savory picks were amazing, with the ham and cheese croissant melding rich, salty goodness with the great texture of the pastry. The chipotle twist was different but with a subtle spice that went well with the cheese and corn. I am so glad this place is here in Salem! We need it and I will be back! No pictures this time because I was hungry, but I promise to take some on my next visit.

Yelp
Manna is such a lovely bakery. They have a great selection of both sweet and savory items, from cheesecake to cookies, loaves of bread to hand pies, plus coffee and other cozy drinks to sip. No matter when I stop by, there are always at least a few groups seated indoors. The sense of community here is real. A cacophony of happy chattering echoes through the high ceilinged space, but it's never loud, just feels like a friendly spot to be. They also have dried flowers and some other goodies. You could put together a great hostess or other gift. My only complaint (and it's not a real one nor Manna's fault), is that the only parking is on the street, and this area of Salem is nearly always packed, no matter the time of day. Still, I'll drive around for 5 or 10 minutes if it means I get some of their goodies. It's always worth it!

Yelp
Best bakery in Salem for sourdough! The croissants are reminiscent of those we've had in Paris & their morning buns are my favorite thing to get!! We love their baguettes, but be sure to go on Wednesdays when they're available. The coffee drinks are really good, especially as they use Steel Bridge Coffee- yum!! It's a great place to start the morning as they've got some terrific cookbooks to enjoy browsing through at one of their tables or couches. The changing local artwork just add to the atmosphere. Smiles from the staff even when they're busy is a bonus to the great service!! It is one place in Salem where I feel like we're regulars- even the hubby loves the place & he is our bakery snob in the fam. Manna deserves no less than on the mangiamamma scale of delicious!!

Yelp
The service was amazing and the bread so good. So nice to have such a variety so close to home

Yelp
We were looking for coffee and pastries and found this gem on State Street downtown through a google search. Wonderfully fresh and flaky croissant and moist (yes moist) muffins. The coffee was great and piping hot. They were consistently busy during our stay, with families and business people alike. I highly recommend.

Yelp
Best Bakery In Salem, maybe best in Oregon (I haven't tried them all yet, but I am working on it). I can't recommend just one thing because it is all mind-blowing, but start with cinnamon roll, next get a twist (Olive and Pistachio changed my life), and the expertly pulled Steelbridge coffee will put every other coffee shop in Salem to shame. Warning; Manna will cancel out all your workouts and you'll have to change the route you drive to work to either get there or avoid it after a workout.

Yelp
They were packed on a Saturday morning but the service was still quick and efficient. The bread is made in a bakery in the store and I found it to be reasonably priced, $8-$10 for a homemade loaf of bread. They also had wonderful looking and I tried a cinnamon roll which was everything you would want out of a pastry. So far I've tried the cranberry hazelnut bread and their ancient bread. Both were hearty, fresh and full of flavor. I would highly recommend them for your bakery needs.

Yelp
Checked out this hot and new bakery and got the honey doodle cookie which melted in my mouth & pain au chocolate. Very delicious!

Yelp
A popular spot, with broad-spectrum service: you can get excellent coffee drinks and, it appears, a light meal. Every time I've been there, a constant stream of customers is coming in. The last loaf of bread I got, the baker had not punched down the rising dough adequately, and the loaf was slightly overbaked, so there is variation in quality. An interesting clientele, people who live downtown, seniors on bicycles. A solid lurk for those who relish the downtown lifestyle and bakery goods. Staff have been very civil to me.

Yelp
I would give Manna Bakery 10 stars if I could. Note NO negative reviews of Manna...because Manna Bakery is AWESOME. Good coffee, great bakery treats, local artwork for sale on the walls, friendly staff, nice location downtown...love, love, love. The chocolate croissant is pure heaven on earth. Also, they have a booth at the Saturday Market, always with a line of people, and honestly every single thing I have sampled from them at their bakery and from the Saturday Market are a hit. Highly recommend.

Yelp
What a fun and interesting bakery, with superb quality. Definitely a five star excellence.

Yelp
I loved the rye bread loaf! It was outstanding. I had them slice the round loaf and the smell of fresh rye bread was too awesome to resist. I ate two slices walking back to my office. I ate every slice over the coarse of a few days and it was fresh and tasty to the last bite. I will visit this bakery again! Staff were so nice and helpful too.

Yelp
Our favorite bakery in Salem we go there at least once a week for their delicious pasties still warm from the oven in the morning. The wait staff are always friendly no matter how busy they are. We love the old store front building it's great to see a business utilizing one of Salem's great old buildings in downtown.

Yelp
gorgeous, inventive and crazy yummy pastries you won't find elsewhere plus great coffee to go alongside. cheerful service tops it off. well- packed to go or hang out in the comfortable cafe to read from the eclectic library, chat, look at local artwork or play a game.

Yelp
Delicious pastries and coffee. Sliced sourdough was awesome for grilled cheese. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Seating is nice, but it's PACKED by 10am on weekends.

Yelp
Focaccia is amazingly good. It was so good that I went in the next day to get 3 more plus a sourdough loaf. Amazing, I will be getting weekly for my breakfasts
