The Best Sports Bars to Watch the Vikings and the College Football Playoffs | Eater Twin Cities

"This neighborhood institution is near the University of Minnesota in St. Paul’s Como Neighborhood. Manning’s has been serving diners for 80 years — nearly a century! Even after all of those years, it still serves one-of-a-kind, thick-battered onion rings and beer at college-student prices. A classic cheeseburger is a great choice here, or come on Thursdays for 75 cent wings." - Eater Staff

Google
There's nothing fancy to look at, but that's allright. The service and the food are wonderful! Speedy and sweet service with great recommendations. We all have our go-to food, but I went with the California burger and added their thick cut bacon. WOW! Seriously, it's THE best burger I have had in a long time! The meat was seasoned so well, and the burger was at least 3 inches thick and the bacon perfect! I do not favor French fries, but theirs were delicious! I had the unseasoned crinkle cut, and you get a nice portion too. My family had mashed potatoes and beef gravy, which I had to taste - yum! It was with pork loin and the open beef sandwich. You cannot go wrong here!

Google
Love this place I was able to park since I had my truck and trailer walk in and the bartender is so friendly and nice and the waitress was so nice to me and the food was amazing. I sat outside with my puppy and had breakfast if I’m ever back in this area, I will come back. I recommend the breakfast burrito.

Google
Love Manning's Restaurant & Bar. All menu items rock, and the service is great. Breakfast served all day, too. Definitely get the Top Sirloin, excellent slab of meat cooked perfectly, burgers are amazing as are the seasoned fries. Love you Manning's it a must stop for me every time I'm this side of town .

Google
I'm not usually one to frequently bars, but I happened across this one. The waitresses were great, and quite helpful, the atmosphere was fine, no major complaints, but the food definitely left something to he desired. Most of it was above $15 dollars, but if i could I would pay 5 dollars for it. Honsestly not too bad, but not worth it for $15.

Google
Great food and good service. Breakfast served all day. I recommend the corned beef hash of you are in the mood for breakfast. The burgers are really good as well. The onion rings are delicious as well.

Google
Love this neighborhood place. Simple but outstanding breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Staff is super friendly! Bartenders and servers are top notch!

Google
Any place that serves free popcorn automatically gets 4 stars. I’ve never had to wait long for anything here— the food and drinks are amazing! Recommend: Moscow mule, breakfast burger, pulled pork, and more. It also has gluten free buns!

Google
It's like a supper club and dive bar had a baby. They have good beer specials, free popcorn and the patty melts are next level. Friendly staff and warm atmosphere.

Yelp
Listen. We had the most cheerful, helpful server on Thursday 8/8. She was server #11, blond, fantastically patient with a gaggle of kiddos and adults. And to top it off, the food was good. Hubs used to go with his family when he was a kid, and has fond memories of Manning's. Whenever we're in the Twin Cities we try to visit. The popcorn does not disappoint. Loved the tater tots. A great kids menu with breakfast at all hours (huge hit with the gaggle of kiddos). The adults enjoyed their dinners as well: Hawaiian Chicken sandwich, shrimp basket, sirloin, and bacon cheeseburger. Thanks Manning's and #11!

Yelp
Good: great location. popcorn. TouchTunes. Bad: Service. Manager/Server waited on us. Never checked in, no refills and no plate clearing. Hella long wait times! 20 mins for onion rings! Ugly: Food quality. Manager served burned onion rings and dry $18 burger. Sent one back. It feels like it's under new ownership. Sad to see. With others options nearby, we will go where we are appreciated.

Yelp
You definitely get your moneys worth when you eat at Manning's! I appreciate that they serve breakfast all day. The eggs were fluffy, the bacon was crisp & juicy, the tater tots were perfectly crisp, and the pancakes were delicious! My friend got the California burger, it was big and came with tons of fries. If you are hungry and want good quality food go to Manning's! There is a small parking lot, the place is small but cozy and we had great service.

Yelp
Fun place to have dinner before a game. Happy hour everyday from 2-6. Prices are reasonable and food is pretty good. Staff is very kind. Food takes a little while to come out. Obviously a well loved place. Rock music and plenty of tables and booths. Highly recommend. Appropriate for groups and families!

Gregory B.

Yelp
I have been going there for over 30 years still one of the best in town for good The onion rings are out of this world You will never leave hungry
google avatar

Dave J.

Yelp
Place hasn't changed much since I was in college in the 80's and hung out here. In town for a wedding and stopped in for the first time since '05. Had burgers and we were impressed. The best I can say about this place is that it's a dive bar without the annoying hipsters
google avatar

Heather W.

Yelp
Service was prompt, commutative and friendly. I appreciated how they let us know it might be a bit longer bc they were kinda busy. Food was decent. Scrambled eggs were delicious as was the pancakes. Enjoyed listening to the locals chat with staff. Was very nice. Our service was good and so was the food. Very comfortable atmosphere.
google avatar

Phil R.

Yelp
I had the mushroom and Swiss burger today. It's been awhile since I have been here now that I moved to Lakeville. I think this place may have the best burger in town at a very reasonable price.
google avatar

Jay R.

Yelp
Just had the worst cod fish dinner of my 55yr life! Mushy, all breading, and not fit to eat if you were homeless! Make whomever is cooking eat that S ,,t!
google avatar

Linda P.

Yelp
Always a good spot for a "home cooked" restaurant meal. Can't pass up the turkey, mashed, and gravy! Nothing fancy, but always good food and service in a little neighborhood bar. We've been going here off and on for over 45 years. Great baskets too!

Paul D.

Yelp
My son and I stopped here on our way to the gopher game. Food was good. I will come back again.

Yelp
Gotta love manning's. So classic and love the vibe. Gotta try the mini corn dogs, they are the crispiest most delicious tasty things ever. Also love how good their burgers are and the staff is always really friendly and lovely to chat with. 10/10
google avatar

Yelp
Classic burger restaurant. Got a good quesadilla burger! Would recommend. Ate in the dining room not the bar

Yelp
Manning's Restaurant is THE place to go if: 1) You're looking for creative takes on classic dishes! I noshed on the Meatball Dip - a hoagie roll with meatballs topped with Provolone cheese and coleslaw, served with French fries and marinara to dip in. Super tasty and perfect portion size! 2) You're craving breakfast at ANY hour of the day! That's right my fellow Yelpers, you heard me right, they serve breakfast all damn day! Plus they offer a 32 oz. Bloody Mary for a mere $8.95. Be still my heart! While I showed restraint on sipped on the 16 oz Bloody; that 32 oz will be my unicorn! 3) You love supporting family owned businesses with a TON of history! Manning's has been passed down through the family. They boast regulars of over 50 years and employees that have been with them for over a decade! Serious loyalty here folks. 4) You like a good deal! They offer a variety of specials including lunch, happy hour, and 2-4-1 deals - just to name a few! Check their website for the deets or ask your friendly server! I'd def recommend checking out Manning's Restaurant next time you find your tummy grumbling and you're in the Northeast neighborhood. It does not disappoint!

Yelp
I love Manning's. The food is great, and they have special deals every day. The ambiance is like cheers but with more sports fans. The staff is friendly

Yelp
So delicious and wonderful! Excellent portion size. Very flavorful and amazing! Can't wait to try other menu items!

Yelp
The student burger special was a really awesome deal for some quality food- especially on Monday's. The tots were AMAZING (so crispy & good) + the fries were nice and seasoned. Free popcorn is a great bonus too (as you can see we devoured it all quickly)! My one complaint was the atmosphere was pretty dark & musty but we sat in the bar side rather than the restaurant. Also, I walked but pretty sure there is a parking lot in the back which is nice. All in all a quality place to go to get great burgers for cheap.
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE Manning's. I come for breakfast all the time and it's my favorite in the twin cities. They have popcorn all day (yes, even at 9am) and their food is really solid. 10/10 would recommend.
google avatar

Katie Z.

Yelp
Manning's is a great casual sit-down dinning option! They have a fairly extensive menu & seem to execute it well. Our group of four came in on a Sunday night & were promptly greeted by friendly service. Service was great all around, not too pushy but available whenever you are in need. I had Moscow Mules & the meatless spaghetti dinner. Both were great & served promptly. The spaghetti was $10.50 & included bread and a large salad. The rest of my group had hot wings, a taco salad, and a Hawaiian chicken sandwich. Everyone was pleased with their food. Great prices, great food. While it's a low key place & doesn't necessarily blow you out of the water at first glance, the food is above average quality & the service was very prompt and friendly. Will likely be returning & I look forward to it!

Jessie P.

Yelp
Used to be a cool spot. Absolutely went to crap with the new owner, Tony. The staff is great, I miss the bartender Andre. The food is over-priced and not that good at all. Used to be a great neighborhood bar, Tony has made it clear that this place is anything BUT a neighborhood bar. Never going back.

Kristi M.

Yelp
The burgers are very good - we had a cheeseburger and a bacon/cheese burger. The burgers come with either chips, fries, or tater tots, so we tried the tots and fries. Fries were not memorable (actually bland tasting), but the tots rocked! The server was very nice and friendly. This is a great "dive" bar/burger joint...a hidden gem.

Anna C.

Yelp
Loved our experience here. Our server Bella was friendly and prompt. Great casual atmosphere with awesome drink deals. 5 stars!

Yelp
I love that they added two for ones!! Super excited that they are building a patio too!!

Yelp
Yes, I'm reviewing Manning's on Rex Manning Day. Do you like the supper club vibe but with edible food? Do you want a series of Midwestern cliches but with edible food? Do you want wood paneling up the wazoo but with edible food? Try Manning's unpretentious and legitimately good fare. And who doesn't like seasoned fries or pancakes bigger and fluffier than the human head? Don't try to parse how fluffy the human head is--you're missing the point. How pointy is the human head? Who cares? Eat a pancake!
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
Just one of those places for me. Manning' s is in my family's heavy duty burger rotation along with Matt's, Shamrock's, and Blue Door. I A veritable Murderer's Row of burgers right there. The Mannings offering is a pretty straightforward bar burger compared to the others, to the point you have to question why we consider it equal to such fast company. It just is. Never ever disappointed. Onion rings are similarly "what's the big deal?" Might even be prepackaged. Yet my family can't imagine life without them. Ambiance? You don't bring people you want to impress to Mannings. But you do bring the people you want to be with there. My family must have been there 50+ times, eating the same burger and crinkle fries you can get anywhere. And each time we know we'll be back soon. Go Mannings.
google avatar

Robert G.

Yelp
An excellent family restaurant. It's really an East Coast bar or tavern. The hamburgers are very good the onion rings are excellent, Not an extensive tap beer selection but good beers. Family owned and it shows. I've been coming here for 40 years and intend to keep coming

Yelp
We happened to stop in here on Monday. I remember coming here as a child with my parents. We always ordered the chicken dinners. I am loving this perfect little place all over again. Best burgers in the Twin Cities, no question! Love the bar area and the red booths. Literally just ate the rest of my burger last night and it was just as good. That says it all. My husband and I are going to be new regular's here. Getting sick of the same old places in our immediate neighborhood. Off work tomorrow; going to Manning's again! Addition to my review: Went for lunch again today. Chicken dinner is absolutely outstanding. Stephenie, our server is wonderful. The very small gin and tonic's were a bit spendy, but with food this fantastic, I can skip the drink. 02/04/2019. UPDATE: The best fried chicken in Minneapolis is gone! Manning's has quit serving their chicken dinners. We are so disappointed. Where can a person go for chicken as wonderful as Manning's made?
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
The ladies who serve you are the cutest, sweetest, most efficient grandmas ever! We were warned upon our arrival that it might be a little longer than usual because there was a large party in the back, but we didn't mind so we ordered asap. It was just around noon and we ordered breakfast. It came out fast, hot, and so fresh. And did I mention DELICIOUS?! I'm so happy this place was right where I needed it when I needed it most. I wish I actually lived in this neighborhood!
google avatar

Yelp
Some days you need a dependable friend and this place is just that.
google avatar

Natalie T.

Yelp
Manning's has become my go-to spot for a homey and straightforward breakfast/brunch. Also good to know: they're perfect for all your hangover needs, since breakfast is served all day, everyday. Portion sizes are pretty big, but I did manage to finish my omelette on one occasion (don't ask me how I did it)...otherwise, I've gotten a to-go box each time. Food is tasty and no-frills and reasonably priced. Haven't tried anything off the non-breakfast menu yet, but looks like I'll have to try out a burger and drink special soon.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and GREAT service. Perfect casual, laid back, quality dining. The wait staff makes me feel like family!
google avatar

M G.

Yelp
We have been going here for years and it used to be one of the best places for a burger and a brew. The last couple if visits the burgers have been overcooked and tasteless. I am not sure what has happened but it is disappointing since it is a good location to stop at before or after any gopher sporting event.

Chris W.

Yelp
Best burgers and onion rings in the twin cities, great service, and overall terrific experience every time!
google avatar

Natalia R.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30, I was immediately greeted and shown a table. The ambient is very dim lighting and casual, very much a hole in the wall, family restaurant. We tried the cheese curds which were a small portion (which was actually great because we could finish them!) and I got a turkey burger and my friend got a tuna melt. The burger was on some good bread and came with plenty of tomato and lettuce but the turkey burger was very clearly some sort of frozen pre-made patty that had been thawed and grilled. All in all, decent food and good friendly service. Good price!
google avatar

Gioia S.

Yelp
Still, one of my favorite hamburgers! They do it right here. Hand pattied burgers cooked to perfection. Much better than most hamburgers I've had at the upscale and "famed" places. I would come back again and again. Great service. I do not like any French fries, so I can't review their fries. I can review their onion rings as 5 stars. Excellent crispy, battered onion rings that are addicting. So great. Popcorn in the bar is an added bonus.
google avatar

Yelp
And the award for "Nicest Bathroom in a Dive Bar" goes to......Manning's! Seriously. I felt like I walked into a whole other world that was clean, new and didn't smell terrible! Way to go Manning's, this pushes you from "A-Okay" to "Yay! I'm a Fan"! We walked into a room where the median age was 52 - all there for dinner. Uh-oh. Not what we had hoped for. But the waitress (who, statistically speaking was the outlier) must have recognized the look we had on our faces. She quickly pointed us to the bar - where the median age dropped slightly. But at least they weren't eating dinner at 5pm - this was a happy hour crowd. This was our crowd. As with all my favorite watering holes - Grain Belt Premium was on tap and cold. We settled in to a booth for cheese curds and a salad (It was a strange craving...I know). Both of which were good....for a dive bar. The place was comfortable and the service was friendly and good. I hear there is free popcorn and good happy hour specials - but I guess that is for another day. Manning's is a casual comfortable "old shoe" of the Como neighborhood. A place that you can relax on a Friday, and will be appealing to all ages. Next time I am in the neighborhood, I'm definitely heading back there.
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
I really like Manning's. I believe I've been before but just went again for the first time in ages. The place is just such an American-classic type of joint, a good local watering hole and restaurant that cranks out the good food and good times day after day and until 2am! Props to Manning's for making life a little easier for the rest of us. The place is so cozy. We sat in the middle room or whatever away from the bar. The lighting was dim and it was a great kind of dim: relaxing and unobtrusive. This is a great atmosphere for drinking but also for that 2pm breakfast the day after a night of drinking. The food is slightly spendy but you get a TON of it, and it's good. The onion rings are really unique and while I had a couple minor wishes with them (a bit more crunch/crispiness and a little more salt), they were delicious. I also had the corned beef hash and that came with at least a half-pound of hashbrowns, eggs and pancakes. So, BEWARE ORDERING TOO MUCH FOOD. You'll just have to cut yourself off and 'get it next time'. Oh yeah, the service was spectacular. I would have to say it was much better than most restaurants. The waitresses were on point with refills; there was never a doubt or waiting on it; as soon as you needed one: BAM! That's how it should be. I think there was an older lady there making sure the waitresses were attentive and the formula worked wonders. That really pushed Manning's up near the five-star level for me. If I go during the NFL season and it indeed has the Packers on with sound, it will be an instant five-star rating for Manning's.

Katie S.

Yelp
Manning's never disappoints, stopped in for beer and burgers Sunday night. Service was A+, Alaskan Amber was cold and delish. I had the cheeseburger with regular fries - so good. We had cheese curds for appetizer, which were great. We also like their onion rings. Dining mates rated their food as A+ as well. Bonus free ice cream on Sunday! Our favorite spot in NE Minneapolis, you can't go wrong with any menu item. Free popcorn too.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Haven't had the food here at all, but have done an immense amount of drinking here before. Everday after 11:00pm, they have their regular special of 2 for 1 drinks..and free popcorn! It's a pretty neat get-together spot to meet up with people, the bartenders are pretty nice, the service was great...and those drinks...YES! Overall their drink prices are pretty cheap too. I went ther last night, actually, for the 2 for 1's and got two vodka sodas for only $3.85 (which made for a pretty happy ending) I only wish I'd live closer to this place.
google avatar

Yelp
I went to Mannings after my boyfriend has been talking about it for a quite a few years. We went, and I was soooo satisfied that my toes were full when we left. I had the Hot Roast Beef Sandwich, it was a Sunday when we went, and it felt like I was eating Grandma's home cook'n! The Roast beef was cooked perfectly, a little pink and not chewy. The gravy was perfect and over flowing my plate with delight. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. My boyfriend had the Jumbo burger, with three slices of cheese and fried onions. It was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G as well. It was worth sticking my teeth into. The only thing is that fries don't come with the burger they're additional, but if you decide to get then make sure they're seasoned. YUMMY! Didn't drink, but heard they have the best tap beer around! Very clean and refreshing tasting. It is a definite that I will be returning for some home cook'n goodness and a beer!
google avatar

Ashley J.

Yelp
Manning's is becoming a nostalgic spot for me.....it's in the making - I can feel it! Probably because this Minneapolis spot is latching onto the similar spots I ate at elsewhere and blending itself with those memories of low-key sports bars and helping mom and dad do pull tabs. Ahh yes, those memories :) I haven't been here other than lunch, but it's pretty quiet other than a few sprinkled here and there. Both times I've been, it's been the same lovely waitress, too. I was told they're known for their burgers, so that's what I've done. And both times I can't complain - delicious! Hit up the seasoned fries while you're at it and you can't go wrong here.
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
Burgers here are pretty darn good. Not the fanciest place I've been but, it's close to the UofM campus and its a reasonably priced for the college kids. Ok to go with the parents when they come to town, too!
google avatar

Mariel L.

Yelp
Manning's is big, and was a great location to accommodate a post-concert celebration for our singing group. We had attentive servers pull together a bunch of tables to seat about 20 people, and as more came in, they were able to get more space for us. There's a decent amount of parking in the back, and the service was pretty efficient. ESPN, ESPN2, and whatever else on the TV screens (highlights for the week? All about Linsanity...) It was Friday 2-for-1's, which is always a good deal anywhere ($4.95 for two Honey Weiss). Their food menu is extensive and serves the typical restaurant bar food: fried appetizers, pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, ice cream (?) I got the walleye sandwich with a side of seasoned fries. The fries were amazing; piping hot and salty as all hell. It was my kidney's worst nightmare, and my beer's best companion. The walleye, on the other end of the spectrum, was spectacularly bland. I guess I could have put the fries in the sandwich and eaten it that way. I mean, it was flaky and tasted good (and was as large as my head), but I did have to put salt on it. If they had put the same seasoning they put on the fries, it would have been bomb.com. The beef nachos that my friend got were quite delicious as well, but nothing beats those fries.

Yelp
It's quiet in Manning's on a Saturday morning for the breakfast bunch. Come here later in the afternoon and it will be quite a different story. Service has never been an issue and I was again promptly waited on as I sat in the historic wooden booths. 2015 will be the 80th anniversary of this Como Neighborhood establishment where not just the locals meet. The brief breakfast menu has what most places have as standard fare breakfasts. I enjoyed the Corn Beef Hash with Hash Browns, two eggs, toast and coffee. The portions were more than I expected because of what I've seen at other places the last few years. The coffee isn't gourmet but is better than standard restaurant coffee of older days as well. The meal was cooked to perfection and arrived steaming hot. The potatoes were just right with just a little crunch but still soft enough to not split a tongue. There are some happy hour and late hour specials listed on the table cards and a nice selection of beers many on tap. As mentioned this can be a very noisy place later in the day so I appreciate the quieter times for breakfast even though there were people enjoying some alcohol refreshments before 10:00 a.m.

Nick B.

Yelp
I came in from out of town and had a great time drinking here with my friends. After 10pm they have a great $1 hamm's special as well as $2.50 rail drinks. It's a cool dive bar that is perfect for socializing and they have free popcorn, which is nice. 10/10 would recommend for hanging out with friends.

Yelp
After living in rock-throwing distance of Mannings for almost a year, yesterday was the first evening I visited their bar... without any idea of what to expect, I might add. Luckily for me, the moment I walked in I spotted a pretty poster that screamed "2-4-1's and Pizza Specials, 10PM"-- which seemed like the perfect deal for my bud and I. The experience was pretty good overall. In the hour or so we spent there, the drinks were strong, the pizza was good and the waitresses were friendly. Plus, the late night noms were delicious-- their quick pizzas tasted homemade and were just the perfect amount for the two of us (.. for just 5 bucks too!). It ended up being a pretty chill stop for a drink and some tasty bar food on a week night. I definitely think I'll stop by again.

Zaria J.

Yelp
I live right down the street i order here all the time there breakfast food is wonderful and dinner to die for
google avatar

Yelp
Great patty melt, ice cold beer, fries are crispy and so good. Free ice cream on Sunday (if you have room!)

Tj R.

Yelp
This place has wonderful burgers. They're simple but it's the quality of the meat that makes them so good. They also have some of the better onion rings as an appetizer. I definitely enjoy this place for greasy bar food.
