Yelp
Decided to visit this place for our anniversary. Interior is decent, and the waiter who greeted us was friendly. But everything else went downhill from there.
We are very well versed in sake pricing in wholesale, retail, and in restaurants. When we saw they sell one of my wife's favorite sake, the "Akitabare Suirakuten Junmai Daiginjo", we were very excited.
That sake was listed at $196. The price point is a bit on the higher side for this sake, but we were willing to pay for it, since it was a special occasion.
After the waitress came, opened the sake, we noticed the sake is actually the regular "Daiginjo" version, which is a much cheaper one compare to the "Junmai Daiginjo".
The "Daiginjo" version of this sake typically sells for under $100 in restaurants, whereas the "Junmai Daiginjo" version sells for about $175-$190 nowadays.
Knowing this issue, we told the waitress about it, and she said she will talk to the manager to see what they can do. 5 minutes later, she came back and told us the "Daiginjo" version is what they've been selling there, not the "Junmai Daiginjo". She said they made a mistake on the menu. She also said the manager is willing to take the sake back, but we each have to pay $20 for the tiny amount we drank.
This is absolutely ridiculous. However, we didn't want to make a huge deal, and ended up keeping the bottle, since it was still a good sake. But we are extremely unhappy from what the manager had said.
A few points:
1. If you made a mistake on the menu, and customers caught it and don't want the item anymore, you should take it back, at no charge.
2. Telling us to pay $20 each for the 2 sips we drank is absolutely ridiculous. My guess is they want to cover the cost of the bottle, since wholesale price is around $40-$50.
3. If you've been selling the "Daiginjo" version for $196, you are ripping off customers who don't know what they are paying for. It is an unacceptable business practice.
The meat quality was ok, but portion to price is horrible, even for a supposedly high end restaurant.
How Manpuku handled this issue ruined our overall dinner experience.
I would avoid going to Manpuku. Their unwillingness to own up to their mistakes is not how one should run a restaurant, especially for an expensive place.
Will not go back.
