Manten Sushi keeps our heads on straight without crushing the competition, leaving us with our hopes and dreams still intact. We came in with high expectations for this service at a whopping $50 USD/person (online reservation), which is quite expensive for Japan and left with shrugged shoulders.
The ambiance was nice. The restaurant is on the smaller, quaint side. There are only a few tables for groups no more than 4. The bar fits about 10 guests, and multiple services are performed simultaneously but at different times. It takes a well-oiled machine and lots of communication between the front and the back to get the job done, and you'll get to see that in action while you're a guest there.
As entertaining as it could be, service was still rather slow. In my experience, bad pacing can be just as negatively impactful as bad food itself. I think we were there for close to 3 hours. It's a long dinner service, so, ideally, bring a date that can keep you preoccupied with conversation.
The food was... just ok for me. The flavors were all quite mild in my humble opinion. I found that they really like to add fermented "slime" similar to what you find on nattou (fermented soybeans) on EVERYTHING. Either it's on purpose or it's cross contamination, but I'm just not a huge fan of it--though I can see people being a fan of its textural element it can bring. Some hits, some misses. Some dishes I felt were just filler material. You'll definitely come out of this service full. They give you a lot of food. This is rare for preset omakase.
Some advice: come on time, not any sooner (and of course, don't be late) otherwise expect to stand out in the rain to wait for the prior customers to leave before being able to sit.
Love the ambiance and the service. Tea, water, alcohol were readily refilled. The pacing of the food was too slow for me, and the food to me was just ok for the price. Overall, I enjoyed the experience, and I'm glad we gave them a try. However, I don't find it to be a restaurant where I would return, hence a fair, 3-star rating.
