The 38 Best Restaurants in Melbourne | Eater

"The team at Manzé don’t accept that wine bars have to rhyme with European food, instead focusing on Mauritian cuisine. Chef Nagesh Seethiah mainly explores bold Indo-Mauritian flavors, but also dabbles with the French, Chinese, and Creole influences that can be found on the African island. Think pumpkin confit in mustard oil, scallop with green mango pickle, and persimmon tarte Tatin. The set menu favors organic, ethically sourced ingredients, and the natural wine list follows similar principles. Small but welcoming, the North Melbourne 24-seater confirms that the best things often come in small packages." - Audrey Bourget

We had lunch at Manze during our trip to Melbourne. It was our first time trying Mauritian food and it was absolutely an amazing experience. It was very interesting to see a lot of preserved and fermented jars of condiments around the restaurant thinking which one had been used in each dish that we tasted. We will definitely be back and highly recommend Manze.

Beautiful Mauritian food in a communal setting that still feels very intimate. The goat dish was the standout, but every dish was filled with unique flavours (especially the dessert)

I would like to give all the stars in the sky to this small lovely place that brings wonderful cultural experience to the table. We picked the long lunch and truly enjoyed flavorful experience. Simple yet exceptional cuisine.

We tried the set menu (short) with a couple of entree add ons. Each dish was unique in presentation and taste with the majority of dishes having some sort of spice and kick! The main event was the “bouillon poisson”, perfectly cooked fish and prawns in a tangy broth. It was delightful 😊 Music blaring through the speakers were Atlanta rap which was a nice surprise (for me at least).

RECEIPT No. 3 - Manzé, North Melbourne A living-room-sized restaurant with a playlist that makes you want to go out after, and a menu that keeps you guessing. We went on a Friday night, just Sam and me. Everyone in the room looked like us, early thirties, curious, open to flavour and surprise. Sam sat beside a mortar and pestle. I was next to two stacked pumpkins, each the size of my head. The mood was warm and homey, in the best way. Manzé’s set menu doesn’t tell you much, and that’s part of the point. You’re here to be surprised, and it works. A grilled green tomato reminded Sam of palak paneer. The mushroom baja arrived crisp and golden, like a curry puff with a degree. The gato arouille (taro fritters) were piping hot, hard to stab with a fork. “It’s a one-mouther,” Sam said, which became the rule for the snacks. Each course felt like a short chapter. Fava beans with garlic and thyme. Octopus in a turmeric-mustard pickle. A cutlet with winter greens and silky pumpkin. The rice played a quiet supporting role. We drank: – A quince ti punch for him – A house vermouth with passionfruit and marigold for me The playlist was perfect, all syncopation and swing. The staff kept our water glasses full. And at one point, between dishes, we picked up a Lonely Planet guide to Mauritius and started reading. We already know we’ll be back. Standouts: Salted coconut sorbet with rhubarb and semolina The sense of being looked after without any fuss The feeling that someone in the kitchen is doing exactly what they want, and doing it really well Total: $205 (Somehow, always.) We opted for the set menu and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The dessert was a delightful conclusion to the meal. We left feeling very satisfied with our dining experience. The only drawback was the outdoor seating. We had hoped for a cosier atmosphere, perhaps with heaters or some sort of barrier to shield us from the chilly winds. It was absolutely freezing outside.

I might just find my favourite restaurant in Melbourne. Really creative menu and flavours, great to eat something not samey as everywhere else. The dessert blew my mind, there was a really great savouriness and incredible fig jam that cuts through the richness of the coconut ice cream, it blew my mind. Couldn’t recommend this place enough!
