The 31 Best Restaurants in Kolkata (Calcutta), India | Eater

"It is widely believed that the dum pukht-style biryani traveled to colonial Calcutta with the entourage of Wajid Ali Shah, the nawab of Awadh, who was exiled to Calcutta by the British in 1858. The nawab’s cooks are often credited for adding potatoes to the rice-and-meat dish that gave Kolkata biryani its singular identity. Manzilat Fatimah (Manzi to her friends and patrons), a direct descendant of the nawab, serves up her family’s signature biryani cooked in pungent mustard oil at a small eatery she runs from her home’s terrace. But her menu goes beyond the popular rice-and-meat dish to include other Awadhi specialties that are more likely to have appeared on the nawab’s table: elegant yakhni pulao, melty galawati kebabs, gossamer parathas cooked on an upended tawa, pasanda (thin slivers of spiced meat), and shahi phirni, a custard-like pudding made with ground rice, milk, and nuts." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

So finally we made it to the Manzilat’s after planning for a few years. And one of the reasons will be, one day prior’s planning, you have to let them know before what you want to eat and book for it. You can do that with the help of the contact number provided on Google. It is situated in the terrace of a 3 or 4 storey building and there is no elevator option. Coming to the food 1. Khus Ka Sharbet - At first we were offered a welcome drink which was green in colour, on a small shot glass. It tasted sweet. This is offered as a complementary drink. 2. Mutton Awadhi Galawti Kebab - It was good in taste, one plate will have two pieces of kebab, which will be perfect if you pair with one piece of ulta tawa paratha. 3. Ulta Tawa Paratha - It was thin, it was soft and it was the perfect partner with the galawti kebab, reminded me of the childhood memories of the thin roll outer layer we used to enjoy relishing. 3. Kalkatta Shahi Mutton Biryani - This came with a side known as borhani (traditional yogurt based drink, originated from Bangladesh), it is like raita, but a bit more diluted, coming to the biryani, the taste was nothing extraordinary, very basic. The portion size was good, one biryani can be divided amongst two people. You do not feel heavy after consuming it. But I would not be going back for that biryani. 4. Shahi Phirni - It was softer than the ones we get in the shops which I liked and tasted well. 5. Shahi Kesar Halwa - It was warm and smelled of ghee, was yellow in colour and tasted good. Service: The service was slow, apart from the welcome drink we were served by the same waiter who was also serving other tables, hence the service was a bit delayed. The payment is only done through card and UPI, no Cash mode of payment is accepted. Ambiance : It was a very modest terrace decorated with rice lights and not to deny having mosquitoes in this season, since it is called a gourmet experience I had expected much better with respect to ambiance and service. So I am a tad bit disappointed with that. I know a lot of people hold a special place for this restaurant given the name of the owner Manzilat Fatima, who is the descendant of Lucknow’s Nawab Wajid Ali Shah and that is the sole reason I wanted to drop by to have the experience, but I tried to be as unbiased as possible while writing my first hand experience.

Food quality: Good, but not special. Fresh ingredients used. Quantity is not good according to price. Ambiance of the place is ok.

The food was very basic . The food was over priced and not worth the taste. Moreover the quantity of the Biryani was very less and the quality was moderate. It is for sure very overhyped and not worth the money

If you’re a fan of authentic Awadhi cuisine, Manzilat’s is an absolute gem! From start to finish, our dining experience was nothing short of spectacular. We started with their Khas ka Sharbat, which was refreshing and set the tone for what followed. The Mutton Galouti Kebabs paired with Ulte Taweh ka Paratha were a melt-in-the-mouth delicacy that instantly transported us to Lucknow. The Lucknow Chicken Biryani was fragrant and flavorful, truly a must-try, while the Mutton Pasanda stood out with its tender meat and rich, aromatic gravy. The Mutton Yakhni Pulao and Chicken Rezala were equally delightful, and the Chicken Chaap was packed with authentic flavors. We also had the Kolkata chicken and mutton biryani which were absolutely delicious! To top it off, the desserts—Suji ka Halwa and the unmissable Firni—provided the perfect sweet ending to an incredible meal. A heartfelt thanks to Manzilat Ji for graciously accommodating us on a busy day and guiding us through this unforgettable culinary journey. Every dish we tried was exceptional, but the Galouti Kebabs, Lucknow Chicken Biryani, Mutton Pasanda, and Firni are non-negotiables! Manzilat’s is a treasure for food enthusiasts. Highly recommended—100% worth a visit!

Manzilat's is a complete experience. A cozy sitting area on the terrace, with photos and trinkets on each landing of the stairs, to get you in the mood. Beautifully encapsulates the legacy of the nawabs of Awadh. You have to whatsapp in advance to pre -book your slot. We were two people and ordered one plate each of mutton galawti kabab, ulta tawa paratha, mutton yakhni pulao and chicken rezala. The amount was perfect for two people, the servers were very polite, and the star of the meal was definitely the kabab. Soft, melt-in-your-mouth and insanely flavourful. A little hard on your pocket maybe but worth it.

Food is so soothing to soul .. just as ghar ka khana.. taste buds are ought to get tickled. Only one catch about the place is - get ready to climb 3 floors by stairs to reach the dining area

The highlight of our meal was the yakhni pulao—fragrant with black pepper and nutmeg, featuring the most tender mutton I’ve ever tasted. The homestyle biryani and thoughtfully paired drinks complemented the meal perfectly. Having long anticipated a visit to Manzilat’s, I’m delighted to have experienced it.
