The 31 Best Restaurants in Kolkata (Calcutta), India | Eater

"It is widely believed that the dum pukht-style biryani traveled to colonial Calcutta with the entourage of Wajid Ali Shah, the nawab of Awadh, who was exiled to Calcutta by the British in 1858. The nawab’s cooks are often credited for adding potatoes to the rice-and-meat dish that gave Kolkata biryani its singular identity. Manzilat Fatimah (Manzi to her friends and patrons), a direct descendant of the nawab, serves up her family’s signature biryani cooked in pungent mustard oil at a small eatery she runs from her home’s terrace. But her menu goes beyond the popular rice-and-meat dish to include other Awadhi specialties that are more likely to have appeared on the nawab’s table: elegant yakhni pulao, melty galawati kebabs, gossamer parathas cooked on an upended tawa, pasanda (thin slivers of spiced meat), and shahi phirni, a custard-like pudding made with ground rice, milk, and nuts." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

Excellent Awadhi cuisine from real Nawab's kitchen. Food was unparallel. The galawti kabab was ever best I have tried. Paratha was real thin, not at all oily, best match with the kebabs. Kolkata Biryani was too good too. Chaap and rezala was also exquisite. Really enjoyed our dinner. Thank you.

For Mughlai food lover, this one is a hidden gem. Went there for lunch. Ordered 2 pcs ulta tawa paratha along with chiken laziz sammi kebab and mutton awadhi galawti kebab. And also tasted kolkata special chiken biriyani with aloo, they served us welcome drink in a small glass named khus ka sarbat, so ordered this drink . From dessert section, ordered shahi badam firni and shahi badam halwa. Come to the taste of food : •Kebab with paratha was deadly combination, it's too much tasty and mouthwatering 😋. • Briyani was ok,but not upto the mark. • Sarbat was not so good at all. •But the dessert items were too much delightful👌. Staffs are courteous and their hospitality was remarkable. If you went there for lunch or dinner purpose, you have to take a prior booking though whatsApp / Phone call. Overall experience was nice and satisfactory😊.

After planning for several months finally we came here. The hospitality was good. Seating arrangement was difficult low, nor at ground level, neither at level of standard table. The ambience was light but not unique or different. A living room whitewashed. I would have recommended golden accented designs on the wall and gold accent on the beams of the false ceilings which would have suited the royalty and the other arrangements made in the place. Hygiene was extremely good and it seemed that the restrooms are cleaned thoroughly everyday. The service was mediocre as we realised that this place is possibly understaffed as we had to wait long between orders. But that is manageable. Pre-ordered food was finally getting served. We ordered 2 Kalkatta Shahi Mutton Biryani which unexpectedly had lesser flavours. Though the quality of rice was excellent, the mutton pieces served were soft and succulent. But the Biryani as a whole was not fulfilling neither in quantity nor in taste. We also ordered Lakhnavi Mutton Yakhni Pulao which also has excellent rice quality but the the taste was bland and the mutton pieces were a bit harder. Apart from these we had Fish Chatpata Handi Kabab. It was beautifully cooked however the sizes were a little disappointing but the taste made us order more of it. We also had Mutton Awadhi Galawti Kabab. This was one of the best Galawati Kababs we had in the city. However, it also had a minor setback as it did not come with a small paratha. One can always order an Ulta Tawa Paratha here, but we skipped. We ended our dinner with Phirni which was good. But not memorable. We understand that managing a kitchen single handedly is no small feat but honestly speaking the amount we paid for this food was not at all fulfilling on any aspects. Not sure how it was highly rated and recommended. Or maybe it was just not our day.

The food here is truly a hidden gem - but the pickup experience was a frustrating disaster. Finding the restaurant wasn't easy either. It was hidden somewhere in a dark alley. Hard to find unless you ask the people around. 🛑 The Bad: Service & Pickup - First Impression: I placed my order via WhatsApp on Friday for a Saturday pickup. I was confirmed for "anytime after 6 PM." On Saturday, I texted at 6:15 PM saying I'd arrive around 7:30 PM and was confirmed again.(Technically the food was supposed to be ready for pickup by 6.15pm 🤷🏽‍♂️) The Wait: When I arrived at 7:30 PM, I was told the food would take one more hour. No reason was given initially, and I was not notified about the delay beforehand, despite two confirmations.(The least that could have been done). I was asked to wait in the rooftop seating area. After waiting 15 minutes, I went inside due to mosquito bites on the rooftop asking for a better waiting area. I saw Manzilat herself inside. She told me that they are late as there was a kitchen incident and She immediately had me moved to the air conditioned indoor restaurant. I spoke to other frustrated diners there who were also waiting, like me, an hour or more. After a 1+ hour wait, I finally got my food nicely packed. I was genuinely disappointed that no compensation or discount was offered for such a significant delay(technically 2+ hours if i would have arrived at 6 pm as per initial whatsapp conv). This l tells me that there is little respect for the customer's time, especially when they are waiting for you in the restaurant. ( Now I see similar reviews about delays by other customers here.) 💯 The Good: The Food (A Must-Try!) The kitchen incident aside, the food is undeniably Amazing. Each dish was clearly made with love, very light yet incredibly rich with authentic flavor. This is what you come here for. As i was waiting, i had ordered a chilled Khus ka Sherbat. I wasn't served in the fancy glass but in a regular one 😑. It tasted great and refreshing. I didn't go for the option of a scoop of ice cream. 🍲 What We Ordered for pickup & Loved: Mutton Galawati Kabab(1) , Mutton Chatpata Handi Kabab(1): both of these were Soft, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. But if you look at the quantity you will probably keep wanting for more. Kalkatta Shahi Mutton Biryani: Exactly the satisfying, authentic biryani I'd been craving. The overall quantity was fine for 3 people. Lots of rice and 2 pcs of mutton and 1 potato. May be the size or the quantity of the meat can be improved. Chicken Shahi Rezala: Bursting with flavor; the chicken was incredibly tender. Shahi Badam Firni: A fantastic finish - sweet, but not overtly so. Verdict: I highly recommend the food, but be prepared for potential long waits and significant service issues with pickup. Plan accordingly! The above food is probably good for 2 or 2.5 hungry people. I would suggest to Manzilat that the staff needs to be trained well on presentation and service. I will probably come back here in future and recommend this place to my friends but with the aforementioned caveat in Capital Letters !!

I recently had the opportunity to try Manjilat’s menu, and overall, it was a delightful experience with a few minor areas of improvement. Here’s my detailed take: 1. Welcome Drink – 4/5 A refreshing start to the meal. Well-balanced and enjoyable, though it could have been a bit more unique to leave a stronger first impression. 2. Mutton Awadhi Galouti Kebab – 4.5/5 Extremely soft and melt-in-the-mouth, just the way Galoutis should be. The only drawback was that the salt felt slightly on the lower side, otherwise it was almost perfect. 3. Ulta Tawa Paratha – 5/5 Absolutely perfect! Soft, flaky, and paired beautifully with the kebabs. Easily one of the highlights of the spread. 4. Kolkata Shahi Mutton Biryani – 3/5 This was a bit of a mixed bag. The mutton was tender and the quality of ingredients was good, but the portion size felt small and the dish was overpriced for what it offered. A little underwhelming compared to expectations. 5. Chicken Nawabi Chaanp – 4.5/5 Rich, creamy gravy with beautifully soft chicken. The flavors were indulgent and paired well with the paratha. A must-try dish. 6. Salad – 5/5 Simple, fresh, and exactly what you’d expect from a good salad. Did its job well. 7. Shahi Badam Firni – 5/5 A perfect ending to the meal. Creamy, rich, and delicately flavored with almonds. The balance of sweetness was just right.

A fantastic dining experience from start to finish. Delicious food, friendly service, and a lovely atmosphere make this my new favorite in Lucknow ! The Galouti Kebabs at this place are absolutely melt-in-your-mouth! A truly authentic Lucknowi experience. Firni was also outstanding . This restaurant exceeded all our expectations. A wonderful blend of authentic Lucknowi food and exceptional hospitality. Highly recommended !!

The Majlishi Pasinda was genuinely good — well-cooked, flavorful, and the highlight of the meal. The Khus ka Sarbat was also refreshing and nicely balanced, making it quite enjoyable. Unfortunately, the rest of the dishes were very disappointing. The Mutton Biryani lacked aroma and depth of flavor; it felt bland and did not live up to the name. The Chicken Chaap was poorly cooked, with the gravy missing richness and authenticity. The Galwati Kebab, which is expected to be soft and melt-in-the-mouth, was dry and far from its traditional taste. The Ulta Tawa Paratha was also underwhelming, neither crisp nor properly layered. Overall, only the Majlishi Pasinda and Khus ka Sarbat stood out. The remaining items need serious improvement in taste, quality, and consistency. I hope the restaurant works on these aspects, as the menu has a lot of potential.

Apart from Galouti Kebab and Paratha (which combination is out of the world experience), all other food was very ordinary but quite expensive. The location inside an industrial estate makes it extremely difficult for food takeaways as well. No dining is available at the time I was visiting.
